Emmy Awards<br />
Raul Solis won six Emmy awards.<br />
Five UT Arlington<br />
alumni, graduates of<br />
UTA’s Spanish-language<br />
broadcast journalism<br />
program UTA News en Español,<br />
took home 18 regional<br />
Emmy awards.<br />
At the event, the 15th<br />
Annual Lone Star Emmy<br />
Awards in San Antonio<br />
hosted by the National<br />
Academy of Television Arts<br />
& Sciences, several recent<br />
UTA graduates were also<br />
recognized. Broadcast graduates<br />
Maritza Esquivel (‘17),<br />
Lariza Moreno-Hernández<br />
(‘17), Alejandro Jiménez<br />
(’17), Flor Valdés (‘16),and<br />
Viridiana Martínez (‘16)<br />
each won a Regional Student<br />
Production Award for best<br />
newscast. The winning show<br />
was produced when they<br />
were students, and aired<br />
in November 2016 as part<br />
of a partnership with KU-<br />
VN-TV, the Univisión affiliate<br />
in Dallas-Fort Worth.<br />
Through the Proyecto U<br />
partnership, students receive<br />
class credit for producing,<br />
anchoring, directing and<br />
reporting for Univisión 23,<br />
one of the most-watched<br />
Spanish-language television<br />
stations in the nation.<br />
Esquivel, the UTA News<br />
en Español news director at<br />
the time said, “This recognition<br />
brings me great<br />
happiness and is motivation<br />
to continue to progress as a<br />
professional and strive for<br />
continued excellence after<br />
graduation.”<br />
Julián Rodríguez, founder<br />
and faculty adviser of UTA<br />
News en Español and broadcast<br />
communication lecturer<br />
said,“For our students to<br />
be honored in this way, and<br />
our alumni to be recognized<br />
with multiple Emmy awards,<br />
it is further proof of the<br />
strength of our program.”<br />
Rodríguez acknowledged<br />
the challenges of producing<br />
news in a nation where Hispanic<br />
Americans are front<br />
and center of the national<br />
agenda. He explained, “UTA<br />
News en Español alumni<br />
expertly navigate the American<br />
system, seek verifiable<br />
data and reliable sources,<br />
and present news stories<br />
with narratives that facilitate<br />
the continued development<br />
of our rich and diverse<br />
society.”<br />
