There are many reasons to love living in Brighton,
but its proximity to Gatwick is in my top five. Top
three, even. I’m a sucker for a cheap flight and an
Airbnb and being in the departure lounge within 45
minutes of leaving my own lounge gets the whole
adventure started that much sooner.
But not all adventures need to start at the airport.
There are plenty to be had right here and within easy
striking distance of the city. I’ll often hang a mystery
left down a road I’ve never been on before, safe in
the knowledge that it will spit me out somewhere
familiar eventually, and the A259 will take you all the
way to Dungeness if you keep on going (which is a
bit like taking a road trip to the moon).
It being August and all, we’ve been thinking
about some great escapes and mini adventures to
recommend. Lakeside yoga and wild swimming in
Herstmonceux, a woodland festival for all the family,
or a dinner party under the trees, anyone? Too
tame? How about a surrealist’s picnic, with light-up
cockroach jelly and parsley ice cream? Why not go all
out and move to Ethiopia for a few years? We meet a
Kemptown resident who did just that and other folk
who’ve blazed their own trails. Within these pages
you’ll find a ground-breaking female photographer, a
kick-ass activist nun, and an irrepressible table-tennis
team with their eye on the international prize. And
loads more besides.
If all that’s given you itchy feet, chuck this month’s
Viva in your case, switch on the out-of-office reply
and take to the road. Not sure where to go? My
advice is to hang a left. Happy trails.
