ART .................................... ART & ABOUT In town this month... Meet the Nigerian children who want to kill Boko Haram… Tunde Alabi-Hundeyin, a documentary photographer and doctoral student at the University of Sussex, met the resilient group whilst on a recent visit to Nigeria. They were forcefully evicted from their homes by the notorious terrorist group, and are now living in a camp for internally displaced persons. The exhibition shows photos of and by the children and enables them to tell their own stories. Utopia, at Phoenix Brighton from the 1st until the 19th, explores themes of race, resilience, enterprise and beauty and creates a counter-narrative to the problematic representations of children from the Global South in many charity representations. You might have noticed sculptor Jo Lathwood building an extraordinary structure in Fabrica recently. Getting There is concerned with ‘the making of a journey on one spot’ and combines sculptural, performative and philosophical aspects with the work being constructed, exhibited and deconstructed within a sevenweek period. Expect a large, rising, pathway that compels the curious visitor to follow it through the exhibition hall and up into the roof area with the promise of touching the ceiling. The completed structure opens from the 4th until the 19th with deconstruction beginning on Wednesday the 22nd. The exhibition closes on the 28th. 35 North Gallery have an exhibition of contemporary urban landscape paintings by Harvey Woodward. A graduate of fine art and art direction for film, Henry has worked for the past 25 years as a scenic artist and set painter in film, television and theatre. Working from his North Laine studio, Henry’s paintings capture the architecture, light and human presence within each of his locations. Until the 18th of August. Natural Fibres, an exhibition by Katie Tume (aka Mother Eagle) is at Brush Gallery. Katie’s intricate hand embroideries are influenced by folklore, mythology, burial customs and ‘the old gods’. From the 9th of August until the 2nd of September. ....65....
