NEWBURYPORT – Plans for a second
new beer pub and event space on Parker
Road was put on hold last week while
the owner of a large tract of land in the
Newburyport Business Park looks for a
solution to the site’s parking and wetlands
challenges.
The popular Newburyport Brewing Co.,
which started producing several popular
beers in 2013, wanted to lease three lots at
77-79 Parker Rd. for a new brewery, tap
room and venue for events and corporate
meeting space.
Plans were to renovate the last remaining
residential farmhouse on the corner of Graf
Road and Parker in the business park into
offices. The event space would be in the
renovated barn.
But those plans ended abruptly last week,
at least temporarily, when property owner
David Cowie’s Plum Island LLC withdrew
REGIONAL – Every summer, the North
Shore attracts a large number of tourists,
who come here to enjoy its beaches,
historical homes and buildings and several
unique sites. Among the visitors this year
are the advertising producers for the New
England Honda dealers.
If you watch car commercials on
television, you may have noticed the
latest Honda ad running features a
couple stopping at Bob Lobster on the
Plum Island Turnpike. Carrying their
lobster rolls to their Honda, the couple
is harassed, ala Alfred Hitchcock’s movie
The Birds, by a flock of sea gulls hanging
out looking for scraps at Bob Lobster.
As the couple races away on Plum Island
Turnpike, in the background is one of the
region’s most interesting sites – the Pink
House.
“Both Bob Lobster and The Pink House
the application for a variance from the
city’s Zoning Board of Appeal. The ZBA
members were balking at plans to use offsite
parking for the brewery, tap room
and event space.
The site presents several challenges to
Photo taken from the Honda commercial
redevelopment. Notably much of it is in
the drainage area for the Parker River and
is prone to flooding.
If it had been approved, the Newburyport
Brewery would have located its tap room
a block away from Riverwalk Brewery,
which opened a 165-seat tasting room at
40 Parker St. in December. Brewing since
2012 in the business park, Riverwalk
moved form 2,000 square feet on Graf
Road to a 20,000 square-foot space next
to Mark Richey Woodworking and the
Clipper Heritage Rail Trail.
Being within walking distance of each
other would make Parker Road here a
major stop in New England for increasingly
popular beer tours.
Cowie and Newburyport Brewing can
reapply to the ZBA in the future.
blogged Rochelle Joseph, one of the
leaders of the Support the Pink House
organization. “The area would not be the
same charming, unique place without
them.”
Joseph, who has worked on television
production sets, said she spotted a crew
filming at Bob Lobster several weeks
ago. She wrote: “I wistfully slowed down
and smiled.” She posted a note about it
on the Facebook site for the Pink House
supporters, but she did not know that it
would include a brief shot of the Pink
House.
In mid-July when the commercial aired
for the first time, she said, “I’d barely
opened my eyes that morning before it
was posted in several places - and I was
tagged. And it was posted on our wall at
both Pink House Facebook pages: Support
The barn, which would become
a venue for corporate and
entertainment venues, would be
large enough for 135 seats inside
and 40 outside.
“Petitioner is seeking to add
an amenity much needed in the
business/industrial park – that is
a meeting space and function hall
availability,” the application for a
special permit stated.
Several residents criticized the
project as being too large for the
old farm site.
To meet concerns the ZBA had
about the project, Cowie and the
brewery had offered to limit the
number of customers on site.
If the tap room was having an
event, the barn could not hold
one simultaneously.
“It’s too bad all the parking is
not in the same place,” said ZBA
chairman Edward Ramsdell.
The offsite parking, which
would have been on an adjacent
lot, would require that the owner
build either a sidewalk along
Parker Road or a walkway through
wetlands. The Conservation
Commission was considering
which remedy would be better.
Newburyport Brewing,
founded by Chris Webb and Bill
Fisher, is now a few blocks away
in an 8,330-square foot facility at
4 Pasture Rd.
It currently hosts live music on
Thursday, Friday and Saturday
nights in its taproom. Webb and
Fisher play in a seven-piece funk
band named Das Pintos, which
performs at the tap room.
Riverwalk also has a tap room,
which is currently offering a
dozen different beers from lagers
and stouts to pale ales and Belgian
whites.
A TALE OF TWO BEACHES
- PLUM ISLAND & SALISBURY
BEACH
Friday, August 3rd, 7:00 – 9:00
p.m. How did Plum Island and
Salisbury Beach evolve from remote
and inhospitable barrier beaches into
popular beachfront destinations? Why
do they have such distinct personalities?
With the help of dozens of fascinating
photos, maps, documents and postcards,
presenter John Macone will present “A
Tale of Two Beaches.” Once remote
places, the beaches have evolved and
changed. The presentation will describe
the dramatic events that have altered the
coastline and effected the communities:
erosion from severe storms, devastating
fires, and shipwrecks. John Macone is
the former editor of the Daily News
the Merrimac Public Library will present Rita Parisi of Waterfall Productions, your hostess for a
“Summertime Tea” in the Library at 6:30 PM. At the turn of the century people would spend much
Health & Fitness
of their summers enjoying popular beachside resorts. They would stroll along the promenades, enjoy
amusements such as ballroom dancing, bandstand music, circuses, and moving pictures. Rita , as the
character, Mrs. Gordon, will give you a firsthand account of what it was like to spend a day at the
NEWBURYPORT - Officials at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge have announced that
a portion of the refuge beach have reopened to the public. Specifically, the portion of the beach
beginning at boardwalk 6 and extending south to the boundary with Sandy Point State Reservation,
will be open to public access. The portion of the refuge beach accessible via boardwalk 1 remains open,
as it has been all summer. All other areas of the refuge beach will remain closed until further notice.
The reopening of sections of the refuge beach also means that walk-on night fishing will once again be
permitted – limited to those areas of the beach that are open to the public. The night fishing permits,
which have been available since July 1st, may be obtained at either the refuge entrance station or at the
headquarters during normal business hours (M-F, 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.). Most of the refuge beach
is closed every April 1st due to the presence of breeding piping plovers, a federally protected species.
Typically, in late summer, as the plover chicks fledge (or are able to fly), the beach gradually reopens.
For the latest about the beach status, readers are directed to the refuge’s Facebook page.
NEWBURYPORT - Theater in the Open will present its FREE outdoor theater festival at Maudslay
State Park the weekend of August 18-19 putting on four full productions in two days. The Theater
in the Open Festival rounds out TITO’s 39th summer season with performances of each spring and
summer show produced so far this year. On Saturday, Family Hour in the Open is at 11am and A
Jack and the Beanstalk Panto! is at 2pm. Sunday Much Ado About Nothing is performed at 1pm and
Medea at 5pm. The productions will feature over twenty local actors, and five local directors, including
Artistic Director of Theater in the Open, Edward Speck. “After last year’s success — bringing over 600
people into the Park — we couldn’t be more excited to put on the Festival again this year,” says Speck,
“having so many people enjoy both our art and the beautiful state park all at once is so gratifying. But
what really stood out to us last year was the range of audience interest. We had children who came out
and enjoyed watching Shakespeare, or who saw Antigone for the first time, and adults who howled
with laughter watching Family Hour in the Open. We also had a lot of visitors from outside of our
immediate area who came to see a TITO production for the first time.” Family Hour is Theater in
the Open’s monthly performance of singing, storytelling, and bubbles aimed at children and families.
Put on by TITO’s Company, Family Hour is a perfect introduction to Theater in the Open for young
audiences. A Jack and the Beanstalk Panto! builds on the themes and storyline from the popular
folk tale, Jack and the Beanstalk. Directors Edward Speck and Josh Shack have created a comedic
adventure for Jack and Jill that will delight and entertain audiences of all ages. William Shakespeare’s
classic comedy, Much Ado About Nothing is a remount of TITO’s 1997 version, also directed by
Bonniejean Wilbur. Much Ado is the story of love, mistaken identity, and family honor. Much Ado
About Nothing is appropriate for audiences of all ages. Finally, Euripides’ tragedy Medea is a chilling
account of a mother pushed beyond the limit of suffering, exacting revenge in the only way she can.
Medea is directed by Stephen Haley, and features Newburyport actors Sierra Gitlin and Edward Speck
as Medea and Jason. Medea may not be appropriate for young audiences, for more information call
Theater in the Open’s office at 978-465-2572. The Theater in the Open Festival is free and open to the
public. Theater in the Open is supported by generous grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council
and from local cultural councils. Parking is at the Maudslay State Park lot (DCR parking rates are $5
for MA plates, and $10 for out of state). Allow for a brief walk to the performance sites. For more
information, visit theaterintheopen.org.
Health & Wellness
By J. Peter St. Clair, DMD
Today and next week is a reintroduction
to what this severely
underdiagnosed medical condition
is, and the different ways to treat
it. The more you become aware of
the different symptoms associated
with this problem, the more likely
you are to identify whether you
or a loved one may be affected.
Treatment can extend life.
Sleep apnea is a serious, potentially
life-threatening sleep disorder that
affects approximately 18 million
Americans. It comes from the Greek
meaning of apnea which means
“want of breath”. People with sleep
apnea have episodes in which they
stop breathing for 10 seconds or
more during sleep. (Note: They are
always unaware this happens.)
Diagnosis of sleep apnea usually
requires an overnight sleep study
in a sleep lab, although there are
methods for diagnosis at home.
In fact, more and more sleep
physicians are using home testing
devices because they have improved
in reliability.
There are two major types of sleep
apnea, both of which can severely
disrupt the regular sleep cycle.
Obstructive sleep apnea is when
the muscles in the walls of the
Intro to Sleep Apnea – Part 1
throat relax to the point where the
airway collapses and prevents air
from flowing into your nose and
mouth. However, as you continue
to sleep you also continue to try to
breathe. This is the most common
type of sleep apnea.
Central sleep apnea is the other
type. This is when breathing
interruptions during sleep are
caused by problems with the brain
mechanisms that control breathing.
What are the symptoms associated
with sleep apnea? People with sleep
apnea usually do not remember
waking up during the night.
Some of the potential problems
may include morning headaches,
excessive daytime sleepiness,
irritability and impaired mental or
emotional functioning, excessive
snoring, choking/gasping during
sleep, insomnia, or awakening with
a dry mouth or throat.
So, what is the difference between
snoring and sleep apnea? Unlike
mild/moderate snoring, individuals
with sleep apnea stop breathing
completely for 10 seconds or more,
typically between 10 and 60 times
in a single night. If the person
sleeping in the same room hears
loud snoring punctuated by silences
and then a snort or choking sound
as breathing then resumes, this
could be sleep apnea. (Note: In fact,
these witnessed events are a strong
indicator of sleep apnea.)
Studies have shown that people
with diagnosed sleep apnea can be
so fatigued during the day that,
when driving, their performance is
To see what the binder looks
like, go to Amazon and search
for “Cherished Memories.” You’ll
see the option of using a Kindle
version or the 3-ring binder. Click
on Look Inside and scroll down
the sample pages. It starts with an
Introduction to show you how to
use the book. Section 3 is about
birth to age 12, where you write
information about your childhood
experiences and memories, what
you did for fun, and school.
By Section 6, it gets into
your personal values and the
philosophies you want to pass
on to others. Section 7 is My
Favorites, and it’s my own
personal favorite section. It gives
a place to document favorite
similar to that of a drunk driver. If
left untreated, sleep apnea can lead
to impaired daytime functioning,
high blood pressure, heart attack,
or stroke.
Sleep apnea is a medical problem
and must be diagnosed by, and
treatment dictated, by a physician.
Since many people see their dentist
on a regular basis, if there is any
concern of sleep apnea, the dentist
can work closely with a physician
to refer for evaluation. If a positive
diagnosis is made, the dentist
and MD can work together to
implement and manage a prescribed
therapy.
More and more dentists are
getting training in this area of
medicine because they can be a
help in the treatment of some of
the problems associated with sleeprelated
issues. In my experience,
there also seems to be a large
part of the population who are
un-diagnosed, or are diagnosed
Cherished Memories Bound Together
I know what my project is
going to be when it’s too hot to
go out this summer: I’m going to
complete a Bio Binder Cherished
Memories book.
The purpose of the 100-page
Cherished Memories book is to
leave for your family a record of all
your memories. Better than that,
however, is having the opportunity
to think back over your own life,
what your dreams were, how you
got to where you are today, what
you hope for your family, and
animals (maybe the pets you
had as a child), books, television
shows, foods and more. There’s
also the option to add newspaper
clippings, photos, letters and your
family tree.
You don’t have to start at the
beginning -- pick your favorite
section and begin there.
Another way to approach this
would be to create one of the
binders with your parent. Just
asking the questions themselves will
open up lots of great discussions,
especially if you include your own
children in the project.
You can go directly to the seller
at biobinders.com/bb_purchase.
htm to read more about the
binder.
