Free programs for kids who love to learn<br />

Present<strong>ed</strong> in partnership with the Stanislaus County Office of Education<br />

YEP is a no-cost program that introduces children in grades K-6 to the<br />

performing and visual arts, develops arts literacy and inspires a<br />

lifelong appreciation for learning and the theater-going experience.


Melody of China<br />

W<strong>ed</strong>. Oct. 3, <strong>2018</strong><br />

10 to 11:30 a.m. for Grades 3-6<br />

In this stunning demonstration<br />

of traditional Chinese<br />

instruments, and unusual<br />

percussion instruments,<br />

students learn about the<br />

blending of ancient cultural<br />

traditions of China and the<br />

<strong>youth</strong>ful, multi-color<strong>ed</strong><br />

American culture. San<br />

Francisco-bas<strong>ed</strong> Melody of<br />

China is compos<strong>ed</strong> of<br />

professional musicians from some of the country’s most prestigious<br />

music conservatories. Incr<strong>ed</strong>ibly moving, expressive and often<br />

humorous, the music of China includes folk songs, classical, festival<br />

music, opera, popular music and instrumental pieces.<br />

Aesop: Alive and Well<br />

W<strong>ed</strong>. Dec. 5 <strong>2018</strong><br />

10 to 11:30 a.m. for Grades 2-4<br />

Internationally renown<strong>ed</strong>,<br />

award-winning storyteller Diane<br />

Ferlatte’s early years were spent on<br />

her grandparents’ porch with family<br />

and neighbors swapping stories and<br />

tales, including Aesop’s Fables, a<br />

collection of fables cr<strong>ed</strong>it<strong>ed</strong> to a slave<br />

and storyteller believ<strong>ed</strong> to have liv<strong>ed</strong><br />

in ancient Greece between 620 and<br />

564 BCE. With her background in<br />

music and American Sign Language,<br />

Diane has travel<strong>ed</strong> the globe sharing<br />

these stories as part of the<br />

African-American oral tradition.<br />

The Improvis<strong>ed</strong> Adventures<br />

of Sherlock Holmes<br />

W<strong>ed</strong>. Nov. 7, <strong>2018</strong><br />

10 to 11:30 a.m. for Grades 3-6<br />

Thrills, chills and laughter abound as you use your critical thinking<br />

skills to help the world’s most famous detective solve his latest<br />

case. Kenn Adams and his Adventure Theater players completely<br />

improvise this outrageous, off-the-cuff, who-done-it bas<strong>ed</strong> on<br />

audience suggestions. Guarante<strong>ed</strong> to have students howling with<br />

laughter and shrieking with delight! Astounding, you say? Not at<br />

all. It’s elementary, and meets California<br />

Common Core State Standards in reading,<br />

writing, English-language arts, and theater.<br />

Kenn Adams’ Adventure Theater!<br />

Episode 1: Adventures in Space<br />

10 to 11:30 a.m. for Grades K-3<br />

Attention heroes of all ages. Fun and learning are coming your<br />

way. Be a part of this zany, interactive theatrical adventure<br />

where audience members make all of the sound effects, help<br />

to create the story, and leap up on stage to play the main<br />

characters. You'll blast off in a flying saucer, do battle with a<br />

horrible space monster, meet the strange, three-head<strong>ed</strong> space<br />

wizard, defeat the villain, and save the world! And, you might<br />

even learn a bit about child empowerment and "finding the<br />

hero in all of us." Kenn Adams' Adventure Theater! meets<br />

California Common Core State Standards in reading, writing,<br />

English-language arts, and theater.<br />

Shadowball: The Story<br />

of Black Baseball<br />

W<strong>ed</strong>. March 13, 2019<br />

10 to 11:30 a.m. for Grades 3-6<br />

Shadowball is actor, singer, poet and master storyteller<br />

Rochel Garner Coleman’s newest production commission<strong>ed</strong><br />

by the Performing Arts Center of Los Angeles. The story<br />

opens to the sounds of a Negro League baseball game<br />

taking place in Chicago in 1922, where we meet James<br />

Thomas Bell, aka Papa Bell, a 19-year-old pitcher for the St.<br />

Louis Stars, and himself a super star in the history of black<br />

baseball. This thoroughly absorbing, superbly stag<strong>ed</strong><br />

performance vibrantly brings history to life.<br />

EarthCapades<br />

W<strong>ed</strong>. Feb. 13, 2019<br />

10 to 11:30 a.m. for Grades 3-5<br />

The unique and memorable EarthCapades blends science,<br />

circus, juggling, music, magic, and com<strong>ed</strong>y to inspire an<br />

appreciation for Planet Earth. EarthCapades is a true family<br />

act, featuring 11-year-old juggling sensation Kai Heartlife and<br />

his parents. Sharing the bill is Martin and His Green Guitar.<br />

Through witty and memorable lyrics, intriguing stories and<br />

science-bas<strong>ed</strong> themes, Martin inspires in children a newfound<br />

and heartfelt love for their planet. Kids laugh and have fun<br />

while they learn!<br />

Fun With Science<br />

W<strong>ed</strong>. Feb. 27, 2019<br />

10 to 11:30 a.m. for Grades 5-6<br />

Nick Williams, retir<strong>ed</strong> scientist with the Lawrence Livermore<br />

National Lab, is our most popular presenter ever! He puts on a<br />

high-energy show that demonstrates the wonders of science in<br />

a way that kids understand and enjoy: lots of noise, slimy stuff,<br />

and tons of laughter. Nick is LLNL’s ambassador to schools<br />

and once your students see one of his shows, you’ll know why!<br />

Even More Fun With Science!<br />

W<strong>ed</strong>. March 27, 2019<br />

10 to 11:30 a.m. for Grades 5-6<br />

The demand for Lawrence Livermore National Lab retir<strong>ed</strong><br />

scientist Nick Williams is so great, we’re bringing him back, just<br />

in case your students miss<strong>ed</strong> him last month! This<br />

is a science program that gets everyone excit<strong>ed</strong> about<br />

electricity, solids, liquids and gases, states of matter and<br />

so much more, and all in a noisy, fun and interactive<br />

environment that brings out the inner scientist in everyone!<br />

Boxtales Theatre Company<br />

W<strong>ed</strong>. April 10, 2019<br />

10 to 11:30 a.m. for Grades K-6<br />

Boxtales is a storytelling theatre company that uses masks,<br />

movement, storytelling and live music to present myths and<br />

folklore from around the world. Direct<strong>ed</strong> by renown<strong>ed</strong> Mexican<br />

theatre artist Sigfrido Aguilar, Boxtales explores the rich<br />

indigenous and Hispanic folklore and mythology of Latin<br />

America. The stories include La Calavera from Mexico, and<br />

Paco and the Witch from Puerto Rico. The program also<br />

includes an Afro/Cuban rhythmic composition and song, sung<br />

during ceremonies of Santeria. The production, creat<strong>ed</strong> in<br />

Guanajuato, Mexico, is perform<strong>ed</strong> in both English and Spanish.<br />
