Antarctica
Antarctica is a modern sonnet. Traditional sonnets date from the 16th century. They
have 14 lines. Sonnets can be on any topic but were often about love.
Antarctica
Antarctic streets are canyons
Great surfaces of glass
Where ghosts of lost explorers roam
And sleek wet penguins pass
Antarctic towns are frozen
The air is green and white
The only movement’s high above
An albatross in flight
Antarctic parks are cold and bare
There’s nothing here to see
But South Pole winter dark and long
Snow, stretching sea to sea
And the whispering swish of sliding seals
Echoes over empty fields
