Making a statement
It’s tough to think about fall while writing
on a summer day that feels like spring (the
temperature is 55 degrees). And the thought of
preparing for cold weather again when it’s been
appropriate to wear flip-flops maybe twice is,
well, daunting.
But enough about Mother Nature’s failure in
the Northeast.
On the bright side of things, which is really my
preferred way to approach life, at least there’s
this issue of Beauty Within to look forward to.
It’s packed with information on how to ready
your beauty look and lifestyle for the cooler
months, while still delivering all the relevant info
on less seasonal beauty matters.
Kicking off this quarter’s issue is a feature that,
thankfully, reprises glamour, color and shine,
all the things that should be identified with fall
beauty, in “Runway Beauty.” Here, writer sd
Modiano takes us backstage at Marchesa,
Suno, Kate Spade and Herve Leger to see
various updos (check out the French twist styled
by Orlando Pita), sexy graphics on eyes and
rich jewel tones on lips and nails, all of which
can lead to inspirational looks for a date night,
lunch with the ladies or even the board room.
I don’t think we could have gotten away with not
mentioning how to fake a plump pout, especially
since this fall we’ll see a return to deep lip colors,
both matte and shiny, ala the ’90s, when a bold
lip look dominated pop culture. In “Lip Tips,”
makeup artist Romy Soleimani tells us how to
trick those in the know into believing we’ve been
doing more than scouring the drugstore aisles
for the perfect lip-enhancing liner.
For the men in our lives, Faye Brookman took
a deep dive into the art of maintaining the best
beard, five o’clock shadow — and which tools
to turn to when it’s time to take it all off. “When
he decides he’s cool enough without having to
ride a fading trend and is ready to shave, make
sure he moisturizes, hydrates and protects
his skin,” says hair expert Josh Rosebrook in
“Male Grooming Guide.”
In addition to planning a wardrobe overhaul,
many of us will focus on getting back on track
in regard to diet and exercise — summer’s
treats took a toll on our waistlines, for sure. True
to form, health-and-wellness expert Gabrielle
Reece talks to BW about healthy snacking,
including what to grab, what to avoid and how
to turn healthy advice into habits for life.
We are thrilled to have Olivia Wilde, one of the
most glamorous women in film (and beauty)
on the cover of BW this issue. A global brand
ambassador for Revlon since 2011, Wilde
knows her way around lip gloss and concealer
stick — not to mention an eyebrow pencil to
meet the needs of her obsession for perfect
brows. Read all about Wilde’s beauty faves
and upcoming projects, and find out which
person she finds the most inspirational — can
you guess who it is? — in “On the Cover.”
Please know that all of the products mentioned
within the following pages are available either
in Walgreens or Duane Reade stores, or on
Walgreens.com, Drugstore.com or Beauty.
com. If you can’t find something on the store
shelf, ask your beauty advisor for the most
convenient outlet for you. If there’s a topic,
trend or story you’d like us to explore, please
reach out and let us know.
Thank you!
hot looks
5for fall
Check out these fall trend tips from
Stacy London, and the secrets to
perfect the look.
The winds blow hot and cold in the fall season. In
NYC in September, the temperature ranges from
80-plus degrees one day to 42 degrees the next day.
The manic weather calls for flexible styling before we
make the full-on wardrobe switch for winter. As we
transition from August to October, it’s important to
keep in mind some key trends and tips as we dress
for the autumn season.
Denim is fall’s feature
fabric, and we’ll wear it
in everything from belted
shirt dresses to skirts,
shorts and, of course,
jeans! The ’70s revival
trend is bringing
us amazing flare
jeans in highwaisted
and
lower-rise cuts.
Pair these with
a fun, flowy boho top
or Kimono cardigan for an
overall hippy dippy vibe. When we
buy jeans to fit our booty, many of
us size up, creating a back-of-jeans gap. Use the
Hip Hugger ® back-belt to expertly shore up the
back gap and deliver a body-hugging fit.
Necklines. From the covered-up turtleneck —
which will be huge this fall season and into winter
— to tube-top silhouettes, you’ll have major options
to go from covered to strapless this fall. Dress with
confidence and use Hollywood Fashion Tape ®
to keep strapless styles securely in place.
Hues. As we transition, we make our way to
darker colors. A big trend for fall is head-to-toe
black. Brown also makes a big comeback with
the ’70s revival. Liven up brown with rich shades
of copper and maroon. In the ’70s, streaking
was big, but it’s just not cool now. So, don’t get
caught streaking! Use the
Deodorant Removing
Sponge * to get rid of
pesky deodorant marks
without needing water. This
genius sponge removes
lots of other common
residue we might find on
our apparel, too — such as
pet hair, lint and makeup
powder.
Eyes. Thick black eyeliner hit it big on the
runway at New York Fashion Week earlier
this year. From scribble marks and half stars
to double-winged lines, we were inspired with
dozens of new ways to wear black eyeliner. The
smoky smudge of a kohl pencil is always a great
classic look, too. Keep your eye makeup in tiptop
shape all day long with the Eye Makeup
Corrector & Remover
swabs, which offer
precise touch-ups
that cotton balls can’t
master. Touch up
makeup on the go
in a snap — literally.
The swabs contain
a vitamin E and aloe
vera formula. Snap
the swab stick and
you are ready to go.
Accessories are always key to completing a look,
and tights are where we can make a statement — declaring
major attention with stepped-up texture, intricate prints and
major color. Fringe continues to trend into fall with detailing
on shoes, handbags and scarves. Toss the Stylette * into
a fabulous fringe, suede handbag, and you are all set. This
chic kit features 10 style essentials so you’re ready for any
wardrobe malfunction or fashion faux pas you
might encounter.
Wear the trends well, and use the undercover
wardrobe magic of Hollywood Fashion
Secrets ® Style Essentials — more than
30 products in total — to perfect your look
this fall. Trust me, these secrets work!
Old school
chic
Taking inspiration from New York’s Great
Gatsby era, Revlon Global Artistic Director
Gucci Westman and celebrity manicurist Jin
Soon created a cool, modern take on old,
Hollywood glam for Marchesa.
“I wanted to create a more youthful
interpretation — appearing as though she had
been dancing all night. So I created a copper
eye that was subtle yet elegant. As the focus
of the look, I created a bold, dark lip. For the
final touch I created a flawless, luminous finish
on the face and body,” Westman said.
Soon wanted nails to have a modern glam
vibe; to compliment the dark cherry lip, Soon
filed nails into a natural oval shape and
painted them a deep, blood red. “I wanted to
highlight the focus of the face with a bold yet
elegant nail,” Soon said.
Eyes that
flirt
The makeup at Suno was inspired by
Matisse and Rastafari. This artistic,
painterly look is a great accessory
for the Suno girl. Makeup artist Alice
Lane evened out skin tone and
created a canvas by mattifying skin
to exaggerate the painterly effect.
The face was accented to highlight
cheekbones, the bridge of the nose
and outside of the eyes. Brows were
brushed upward to maintain a natural
look. To mimic the artistic patterns
in the collection, Lane drew a short
dash from the end of the lash line
out. For nails, a zigzag was created
at the nail base.
Walk in the
woods
The beauty look at Kate Spade reflected the designers’ spirit of
embracing fall and the cooler months — and the behavior that often
follows suit. Long walks are met with audacious femininity and a
sense of adventure so the Kate Spade girl would look like she’d
just come home from a long walk in the woods — that effortless
easy hair that’s a bit disturbed. To get the look, Fekkai’s Bob Recine
slicked back hair, and then blew it out to create a natural volume
and smoothness. He used a fine comb to create a center part and
then used his hands to muss up strands for natural static.
French
twist
For the Herve Leger show, hair stylist
Orlando Pita wanted there to be a
toughness to the hair, but in a way that still
felt quite natural and easy for a model to
wear on the runway. So, he played with a
simple update on the classic low ponytail
that left models with a sexy twist down
the nape of the neck. “This is the look for
when you need your exit from the party to
make a bold statement,” Pita said.
Dorm Room Chic
by Faye Brookman
In the blink of an eye, summer will
be over; so, now’s the time to stock
up on dormitory and apartment
essentials to get ready for back to
school. Whether you’re a freshman
getting ready for college living
— or you’re a mom getting a
recent high school-grad ready
to leave the nest — there’s no
need to invest a fortune to create
a dwelling worthy of a magazine
spread. According to the National
Retail Federation, the average
family spends more than $900 on
dorm décor. Beauty Within shows
you how to do it for less.
Student-friendly ways to get glam
College kids are pressed for time, but that doesn’t mean one’s beauty
routine has to suffer. Here are some tips to get your beauty on in
record time — and within budget.
1. Achelle Dunaway, creative director of e.l.f., says that to make it look like you
got eight hours of sleep even if you got home after sunrise, apply a moisturizer,
such as e.l.f. Eye Refresh, to help hydrate skin and perk up the under-eye
area. The cooling sensation of the Eye Refresh rollerball aims to brighten and
refresh, while also helping to alleviate undereye
puffiness and dark circles. Next, use a
concealer to cover up any dark circles. “A
great tip is to create an inverted triangle
of color from under the eye to about the
nose and blend into the skin, as this will
help bring focused light to the face and
create a lift under the eyes.” Then, set
the concealer with a powder, such as
e.l.f. Undereye Setting Powder.
2. Start the day
refreshed with
Clean & Clear’s
Morning Burst
Facial Cleanser,
which is designed
to energize skin
thanks to vitaminenriched
“bursting
beads” that help
purify the skin.
The invigorating
citrus fragrance
awakens the
senses for a great
start to the day.
3. Neutrogena Makeup
Remover Cleansing
Towelettes make removing
lipstick and mascara quick
and easy. When exam stress
yields body acne — yes,
this happens — banish the
breakout with Neutrogena
Body Clear Body Wash in
Pink Grapefruit.
4. Don’t forget
sunscreen for
staying active on
the quad. Banana
Boat Sport
Performance
provides powerful
protection in a
quick-absorbing
formula that won’t
run into eyes. It’s
perfect for active
sun lovers who
don’t want to be
slowed down
when outside.
5. When a trip to
the hair salon is as
likely as a homecooked
meal, try
Revlon Color
Effects to achieve
the newest hair color
or ombre looks. For
other DIY grooming
needs, check out
Revlon’s Manicure
Marchesa Nail
Care Kit.
6. Fashion expert Stacy London
suggests using Hollywood
Fashion Tape and Hollywood
Fashion Secrets Eye Makeup
Corrector Swabs to avoid wardrobe
malfunctions and to be prepared for
everything. You can even take them
along to your next study group.
7. While there’s definitely no time for a
perfect coif when you’re late to class, you still
want to look good! Create a quick and stylish
bun using Organix’ Argan Oil of Morocco
Creamy Hair Butter and Argan Oil of
Morocco Elevated
Finish Spray.
8. The Goody QuikStyle Paddle Brush makes getting ready
for class easier by speeding up morning routines. The brush’s
absorbent, anti-microbial, microfiber bristles remove water to dry
hair faster as you detangle and style. It also can be used with or
without a hair dryer.
A touch of home
Setting up a dorm room can be a daunting task. It’s always a good
idea to check with your learning institution on rules and needs (such
as sheet size) before moving in. The following tips can help students
prepare for life on his or her own, as well as bring a touch of home to
their room — or a least their side of the room!
1. There’s no
need to miss
friends and
family while
away at school.
Photos from
social media
sites can easily
be turned into
canvas prints,
wood panels,
mugs or photo
collages with
the Collage
Canvas Print.
2. Most dorms
don’t allow nails to
be hammered into
walls, so stock up
on such damagefree
adhesives as
3M’s Command
brand. Wallpaper
and paint also are
typically forbidden,
but students can
customize a wall
by hanging colorful
wrapping paper.
3. While some dorms
and apartments are
air conditioned
and heated, many
To
to shave?
by Faye Brookman
Hipsters aren’t the only ones who are sporting unshaven looks.
Increasingly, men are growing beards and sideburns for a more
rugged appearance. But don’t be fooled. Even the unruly, unshaven
styles require products and a strict grooming regimen. And some
trend forecasters are saying the so-called “Lumbersexual” look is
on its way out, ushering in demand for clean-shaven styles. Either
way, here are some tips to keep facial hair looking its best.
Beard grooming tips
“If you are going for a bushy beard, make sure
you shampoo it,” suggests skin and hair expert
Josh Rosebrook, who notes that bacteria has been
found in beards tested for microbes. He advises
using coconut oil, such as Spectrum Essentials
Organic Coconut Oil, after showering to lock in
hydration and moisturize a stiff, coarse beard.
And remember, just because the look is unshaven
doesn’t mean there’s no upkeep. “Men with beards
should still have a quality razor in order to keep
their facial hair well-groomed, since they are likely
shaving their cheeks or necks to keep their look
tidy,” says Mary-Ellen Lacasse, the director for the
shaver market at BIC Consumer Products USA.
BIC’s Flex 5 was designed with beards in mind
and includes a precision edging blade, which
makes it easy for men to trim such hard-to-reach
areas as around sideburns and under the nose, and
create definition for unique facial hairstyles. The
head of the razor also pivots a full 40 degrees for
better control.
Just because his face
is covered with more
hair doesn’t mean he
can bypass sunscreen.
“Make sure you protect your
face with a moisturizer with SPF
every day,” says Sonya Beltz, Boots
beauty expert. “This way, when you
decided to shave, you will not have
tan lines from the beard!” One
option is Boots No7 Men
Protect & Perfect Intense
Moisturiser SPF 15.
Taking it off
When he decides he’s cool enough without
having to ride a fading trend and is ready to
shave, make sure he moisturizes, hydrates
and protects his skin, Rosebrook says.
Shaving is incredibly personal. “Men now
view their grooming habits as a reflection
of who they are,” Lacasse says. “They take
pride in shaving faces and neatly trimming
beards, goatees and mustaches.”
Her tips include shaving after showering
when pores are open and skin is clean,
using a shave cream or gel and always
shaving in the direction of hair growth. “After
shaving, rinsing the face with cold water
helps pores close,” Lacasse says.
Pressed for time?
Gillette’s
Fusion
ProGlide
with FlexBall
Technology
is infused with
mineral oil and
lubricating
polymers to shave
and moisturize
simultaneously.
eauty bulletin|lip tips
As an editorial makeup artist, one of the most
common questions I receive from clients is, “how
can I make my lip color last and look great all day
long?” I’m always happy to answer that anyone —
I mean anyone — can have a perfect pout and rock
their favorite lip shade. Even if you think your lips
are too thin, too chapped, etc., there are so many
tips and tricks to faking it that will help enhance
your lips to their utmost beauty.
The first step to achieving the perfect pout is as
simple as looking after your lips! Don’t allow your
lips to dry out, use balm regularly and protect
them from the sun with SPF lip products. Before
you even think about applying lipstick, you need
to make sure your lips are smooth. Try Laura
Geller Lip Strip to exfoliate away any dry,
flaky skin on lips. Your lips will feel smooth and
tingly — they
may even feel
plumped up after
being scrubbed.
Follow with a
hydrating balm to
lock in moisture.
I love to use
Boots Botanics
Lip Balm. It is so
hydrating — it can
be used on any dry
patches of
your skin,
including
knees,
elbows,
etc.
eauty bulletin|lip tips
Now that your lips are prepped and ready to go, the next step is applying
concealer. Putting concealer on your lips gives you a clean slate. Any
uneven lines will disappear. Next, take a lip pencil that is a similar shade
to your natural lip color, and carefully line your lips. Feel free to embellish
the top lip a little to add some roundness. If you do decide to overdraw your
lips, press the liner into lips with your finger to make the line look seamless.
Rimmel London 1000 Kisses Stay On Lip Liner Pencils glide on
easily and come in various shades. Make sure the pencil is sharpened so
you get an even line.
Apply your favorite lipstick
— such as CIRCA Beauty
Color Absolute Velvet
Luxe Lipstick in Audrey
straight from the tube,
starting at the center of
your lips. Paint both your
top and bottom lips until
they are fully colored.
With the pad of
your finger,
press the
lipstick into your lips. This awakens circulation and plumps
lips, as if they were bee-stung. This also helps the color
stay in place — your lipstick is much less likely to move
around and fade throughout the day.
To add a little extra “plump” to your lips, you can start
your lipstick routine with a plumping product, such as
Physicians Formula Plum Potion Needle-Free
Lip Plumping Cocktail. Make sure to blot off any
excess before applying your lip color.
Snack Attack
Our options for eating a healthy,
fulfilling snack are plentiful, but we’re
often left confused and overwhelmed
by the array of choices before us.
Here, Beauty Within’s health-andwellness
expert Gabrielle Reece
shares which foods will get us
through the day, adding energy —
not inches — to our bottom line.
by Andrea Nagel
Before reaching for anything
to snack on, drink a 32-oz.
glass of water.
If you have a real breakfast, your mid-morning
snack should be light. A lot of people think they’re
hungry at this time of day
when actually they’re
dehydrated, which will
make you eat more. Have
a big glass of water —
they say that if you drink
water it creates fertile
ground for the right
type of snack. Try a
handful of almonds
and maybe a small
piece of fruit to take
away hunger. Make
sure the almonds are
raw, not honey roasted
or with sugar. Or try a bar — there are many
healthy bars out there, like the Pure Bar, which
is gluten-free, organic and vegan; and Bare
Bar, which offers gluten-free and dairy-free
options and don’t use GMOs. You want to look for
ones that are gluten-free and not off the charts
in sugar. Remember that we want to consume
a healthy amount of fat and protein at mealtime
because these things will help you feel full and
help your brain function. What we’re trying to do
is get through the day.
Foods with crunch and
texture are important
when choosing good
snacks — say almond
butter and an apple,
for example. Healthy,
conscious snacking
takes preparation,
so plan in advance.
Maybe cut up an
apple and put it in
a baggie, and pack
the almond butter
in a container. Now
you’re ready for dipping. It slows down the snack
and stretches it out. It’s all about the experience.
What’s In? What’s Out?
My general rule is that if a food grows in nature,
I’m not going to be freaked out by it. That goes
for bananas, a fruit that is higher in calories and
sugar than most but can be very satisfying. If
you like bananas it is a snack that will really
make your morning! Just don’t eat a bunch of
them. One is enough. I make a fun dessert in
which I take a banana, smear it with almond
butter, roll it in gluten-free whole oats and raisins
and drizzle honey and cinnamon on it. Here I’m
getting a crunch from the granola, healthy fat
from the almond butter, chew from the raisins and
sweetness from the honey.
Anything that is habitual needs to be closely
examined. One culprit can be frozen yogurt.
This is a dessert, not a snack. It’s dairy, high in
sugar and can create inflammation in the body.
I’d rather see someone eat a bowl of fruit with
honey. This is a sweet snack alternative that the
body can assimilate and process easier, even
if the frozen yogurt is fat-free — or I should say
“especially.” I’m not in love with fat-free anything.
How did they get it fat-free? It’s like diet soda; it
would almost be better to have the sugar than the
processing that made it zero calories. I have a
thing about ‘fat-free’ and ‘sugar-free.’
find that you’re tired after eating animal protein, it
means your body can’t convert this type of food
into energy. Also, don’t discount prepared foods.
They are easy and accessible and now consider
all types of dietary needs.
Are you hungry or bored?
Sometimes we’re just looking for something to
do, so we reach for something to eat. You need
to replace snacking with another habit, and yes,
taking a mid-afternoon walk can become a habit.
Or, drink a cup of decaf tea. I think there should
just be an overall effort to get into good habits.
Avoid caffeine after 1 p.m. Reach for snacks
that are high in good fats (avocado) rather
than laden with sugar (candy.) Just try
and get it right 80% of the time.
Skip the late-afternoon snack.
I think that if you eat a lunch that has enough
healthy and filling elements, it will lead to less
snacking at 3 p.m. or 4 p.m. If you’re just eating
a salad for lunch, you’re really not getting
enough fat or protein. Make sure you’re getting
some healthy protein, such as quinoa if you’re a
vegetarian, or some kind of lentil mixture. I’m not
a huge advocate of grains, but brown rice and a
little olive oil with fresh vegetables is a great idea
for lunch. Plus, such foods as a big sandwich or
pasta might leave you feeling tired afterward. If
that’s what you’re eating four times a week,
switch to rice. I’m not big on grains,
but brown rice is better than the
sandwich. It’s all about
steps. You should eat
in a way that has
the best affect on
your body. If you
It’s not just her looks that
have landed Olivia Wilde on
Hollywood’s A-List. Off screen,
she has a witty Twitter account
make us love her even more.
Many of us came to know the
actress on such TV shows
as “The O.C.” and “House,”
but she became a global
phenomenon in such films as
“Rush,” “Tron: Legacy” and the
Oscar-nominated film “Her.”
Wilde also is the producer of
the critically acclaimed film
“Drinking Buddies” and the
“Body Team 12,” which debuted
at the Tribeca Film Festival. She
has a full roster of upcoming
projects — look for her in a
new holiday flick this November,
“Love the Coopers,” and in an
upcoming HBO project inspired
by rock ’n roll. And, of course,
she has her toddler son Otis to
fiancé, actor Jason Sudeikis,
who she describes as one of
her biggest inspirations. Read
on the cover|Olivia Wilde
Beauty Within: You’ve been with Revlon
as a brand ambassador for a couple of years.
How are you seeing the brand evolve?
Olivia Wilde: I have always admired
Revlon and their commitment to making
women feel beautiful, both inside and out. They
respect each of their ambassadors’ individual
personalities, and it’s been great to see how
each of us can represent the brand in our own
unique way.
BW: Talk about Revlon’s new Love is On
campaign and how it brings emotion and
sexiness to the brand.
OW: Having love in your life makes you
feel positive, and the confidence that shines
through from that inner feeling is the definition
of sexy!
BW: How have you brought your
personality to the brand?
OW: To me, beauty is about feeling like
the best version of yourself. Having fun with
makeup and hair should be about artistic
exploration, not about creating a mask to
cover yourself. Hopefully I have been able to
project that belief and a sense of empowerment
through my Revlon work.
BW: You’re such a natural beauty, but we all
know looking natural takes some help. What
beauty products are always in your bag?
OW: I’m all about a quick-and-easy natural
look for day to day, which you can do with
just a few tools. The Revlon Age Defy
CC Cream and Revlon Brow Fantasy
Brow Pencil are good basics. I always have
an eyebrow pencil with me because I am
compulsive about my eyebrows. The Revlon
ColorStay Eyeliner is good for switching
between day and night looks, as is Revlon
Super Lustrous Lipstick.
BW: What is your favorite go-to lip color?
OW: I usually wear a classic, nude lip. But a
bold, red lip with the right outfit is a fun way to
mix it up.
BW: What beauty rituals should we
know about?
OW: Prep your skin with a good face
moisturizer. I love Dr. Hauschka Rose Day
Cream. I don’t overcomplicate my routine. I
do make sure to wash my face with a good
cleanser and exfoliate.
BW: I think you were one of the first to
appear breastfeeding on Instagram before
the whole “ban nipples” thing started. Why do
you think people are so uptight about publicly
breastfeeding in the United States?
OW: There’s nothing indecent about feeding a
hungry baby. Breastfeeding is natural and was
right for me and my son at the time. Women
should be able to embrace all aspects of their
life in public, including their mom duties.
BW: Please tell us about any upcoming
acting/music/business endeavors you are
working on.
OW: “Love the Coopers” is coming out in
November. It’s a great family holiday movie
with an amazing cast. And I’m shooting an
HBO show called “Rock and Roll” that will
come out next year.
BW: How do you stay in shape? What is
your fitness/diet philosophy?
OW: I don’t follow a specific diet, but I do try
to cook as much as possible. Working out is so
important and therapeutic. I enjoy classes like hip
hop dance and SoulCycle. It’s important to find
something that works for you. Right now I am
doing Tracy Anderson, which is kicking my butt!
BW: What’s your cheat food?
OW: Pizza and beer!
BW: Red nails or nude nails?
OW: I think it depends on your mood or event,
but be bold! Why not?
BW: Describe your personal style for day
and for night. Do you wear jeans and flats or
dresses and heels?
40 • summer/fall discoverbeautywithin.com

on the cover|Olivia Wilde
OW: I’d say the look I go for is relaxed chic.
Some of my basic pieces are dark skinny jeans
and plain comfy shirts. My red carpet beauty
look is pretty much the same as my everyday
look, except I add some bronzer and either
eyeliner or a fun smoky eye.
BW: Do you have any beauty icons?
OW: Kathryn Hepburn and Christie Turlington.
Also, I’m really inspired by women from the ’60s.
BW: Have you received any solid parenting
advice? If so, what was it, and who was it from?
OW: I have received so much great advice
from so many amazing women. That’s one of
the wonderful things about having a baby —
you’re part of a whole community of badass
women who you can turn to. I really look to my
mom for inspiration, especially in regards to
how she balanced her career with motherhood.
talent. I think that level of mutual respect really
is so important in a relationship. Love usually
comes to you once you’ve learned to love
yourself. With Jason, I was in a really good
skin report|age appropriate
If you’re in your '20s
Avoid tanning salons, and use
sunscreen daily to protect skin
from harmful UVA/UVB rays.
Some of the most common skin issues
dermatologists see on a regular basis involve
women who sunbathe and go to tanning salons.
“Tanning beds are the best way to develop
melanoma, which kills one American every 55
minutes,” says Dr. Neal Schultz, a board-certified
dermatologist who operates Park Avenue Skin
Care on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. “They
are at the root cause of the current epidemic of
lethal melanoma in American Caucasian women
between the ages of 15 years and 39 years.”
Keep skin protected by applying sunscreen to
the face daily (and to the body if you’re going to
the beach or participating in any other outdoor
activities). For the face, use Garnier Skin
Renew Dark Spot Anti Sun-Damage
Daily UV Lotion before applying makeup.
Not only does it work to minimize the
signs of existing sun damage, it
also evens out skin tone, prevents
dark spots and discoloration and
contains SPF 28.
For the body, use
L’Oréal Paris
Advanced
Suncare
Invisible
Protect Clear
Finish Spray
UVA/UVB SPF
70. This alcoholfree
formula
smells divine, is
water-resistant
up to 80 minutes
and leaves
no streaks or
residue after
application.
20
Wash your
face before
going to
sleep at
night. No
matter how
late you get in from working (or
partying), don’t sleep with your
makeup on.
“Women in their '20s often forget to take off
their makeup,” says Dr. Debra Luftman, a
dermatologist on the Simple Advisory Board.
“Sleeping with makeup clogs pores, and causes
skin irritation and breakouts.” The easiest way
to take it off? Grab a wipe. Keep the Simple
Skincare Cleansing Wipes on your
nightstand. Not only do they remove all makeup
— even waterproof mascara —they also leave
your skin feeling soft and never greasy.
Avoid picking your skin.
No matter how tempting it may be, don’t touch
that zit. “I often see women in their '20s who
pick their faces,” says Dr. Debra Jaliman, a
board-certified dermatologist and author of
“Skin Rules: Trade Secrets from a Top New
York Dermatologist.” “This is a bad habit that
can lead to scars. If you have a pimple, cyst
or blackhead, leave it to the experts.” No time
to make it to a dermatologist? Spot treat your
breakouts with the Neutrogena On-The-Spot
Acne Treatment.
It contains 2.5%
benzoyl peroxide,
won’t irritate and dry
If you’re in your '30s
Don’t over-exfoliate.
It’s great that you’re washing your face, but
harshly scrubbing your skin when doing so?
Not so much. “Women in their '30s often think
that scrubbing their skin will
prevent fine lines and pigment
from forming,” Luftman says.
“But, in fact, they are potentially
causing dehydration and microtears
in their skin.” Instead of
scrubbing without caution,
use a gentle cleanser, such
as Cetaphil Gentle
Skin Cleanser. Add
an item that uses retinol,
like philosophy help
me retinol night
treatment, to ward off
wrinkles, fine lines and
pigmentation problems.
Rid yourself of under-eye concerns by
implementing an eye cream into your
skin care regimen.
“The delicate under-eye area
is the first to show signs of
aging, so be careful not to
stretch this skin when applying
and removing makeup,” says
Dr. Dendy Engleman, a boardcertified
dermatologic surgeon
and an associate at Manhattan
Dermatology and Cosmetic
Surgery. Try an eye product
infused with caffeine, such
as Garnier Ultra-Lift Anti-
Wrinkle Firming Eye
Cream, to keep puffiness at
bay and restore elasticity to
the under-eye area.
30
Keep skin tone
even by wearing
sunscreen and a
brightener daily to
keep it glowing.
Neutrogena Rapid
Tone Repair
Moisturizer SPF
vitamin C to brighten,
plus broad-spectrum
One of the best ingredients for
keeping skin moisturized is grape
antioxidant. Try Merlot Natural
If you’re in your '40s
skin report|age appropriate
Remember to apply skin care
products below the chin line.
“The neck and décolleté area can start to show their age
during this time, so it’s important to apply skin care to these
areas as well,” Engelman says. Try applying StriVectin
TL Advanced Tightening Neck Cream each night
before bed. Not only does it reduce the appearance of fine
lines and wrinkles, it also gives skin a firmer look and a
more even texture.
Moisturize daily to avoid dullness.
Once you get into your '40s, skipping moisturizer is not an
option. Moisturizing daily will help keep skin from looking dull
and tired. “Remember, in your '20s you didn’t need as much
moisturizer, but now you do,” Schultz says. Try Eucerin Q10
Anti-Wrinkle Sensitive Skin Creme. Not only does it
help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, it works
to firm and moisturize to promote softer, smoother skin. It can
be used alone or under makeup.
Exfoliate skin at least once a week.
“Exfoliation is the single-most important home treatment for younger, brighter, more
beautiful skin at this age,” Schultz says. But, Jaliman
warns to pick just one. “Some women in their '40s use
sonic cleansing systems and cleansing grains,” she said.
“These are great options, but you
can’t use them together —
especially as your skin starts
to get drier with age.” For
a gentle, daily scrub, try
the Garnier Clean +
Invigorating Daily
Scrub. This collection
contains scrubs for
specific skin types to
address concerns,
plus contains jojoba
cleanse and polish.
If you’re in your '50s50
Start using a
heavier moisturizer.
“Hormonal changes can lead to
dehydrated skin during this time,”
Engelman says. “Drinking an adequate
amount of water per day and constantly
moisturizing is extremely important at this
age.” CeraVe Moisturizing Cream
contains a patented Multivesicular
Emulsion formulation that’s slowly
released throughout the day to deeply
moisturize and nourish the skin.
Firm up and fill
sagging areas.
“Every pilot knows that gravity
always wins,” Schultz says. The
best route? Find a board-certified
dermatologist near you for fillers.
If that’s not in your budget, try
La Roche-Posay Substiane +
Anti-Aging Skin Treatment.
This product is best for targeting
dryness, sagging facial features
and loss of cutaneous substance.
It features a unique complex that
helps encourage regeneration.
Take vitamins.
“When taken daily, supplements will help
to give an extra boost to the quality of the
skin,” Engelman says. Nature’s Bounty Extra
Strength Hair, Skin & Nails supplement
contains hyaluronic acid, antioxidants and
vitamins A,C and E to help keep skin looking
9beauty tips
for the products you already love
by Bryce Gruber
You probably have a medicine cabinet
full of go-to beauty goodies that you’ve
been obsessed with for ages — and you
probably add in a few new products every
time you hit the store just to fill new beauty
needs. But have you ever tried getting
more out of the products you already
have? Most of the best drug store beauty
purchases have a bunch of off-label
uses that can save you time, energy and
money, and even help you tackle lastminute
beauty debacles with no sweat.
Here are a few of the best to try.
1. Turn your regular body lotion into
a shimmery warm weather lotion. You
don’t have to pay extra for one of those shimmery
lotions just for the summer, and they don’t always
work as well as the seriously hydrating formulas. No
worries — unscrew the top of your favorite lotion,
like the new Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion,
and add half a teaspoon of your favorite sparkly,
broken eye shadow in any flesh tone. Don’t worry
if the sparkly shadow you have is a deep tan color
and your skin is porcelain white — it will be diluted
in the lotion and give you a soft, natural glow with
some added shimmer.
2. Use a do-it-all stick for contouring. You know what’s really
hard for most people? Contouring. It doesn’t matter how many YouTube
or Instagram videos are out there; it’s just complicated for normal people
to apply darker shades of brown to their skin and blend flawlessly. One
of the best hacks out there is to use an eye shadow or do-it-all stick,
like Neutrogena MoistureSmooth Color Stick, in a color one or two
shades deeper than your own skin tone (the Warm Caramel shade works
well on a variety of skin tones). The stick is easy to maneuver, and all
you need to do is glide along diagonal lines below cheekbones, down
the sides of the nose and on the top edge of the forehead. Blend with a
finger and you’ll look refreshed, gorgeous and like you have some serious
makeup know-how.
3. Pick up some yogurt, and put it on your face. If you’re
already at the store buying snacks and other movie night essentials,
consider eating half of your plain yogurt for internal benefits and then
spreading the other half on your clean, dry face. Why? Because
plain yogurt is one of the best face masks out there. “Lactic
acid promotes gentle exfoliation,” says Dr. Thomas Sterry, a
board-certified plastic surgeon based
in New York. “It works the
same way many of the key
ingredients in expensive
creams and masks do, but
with the benefit of already
being in your kitchen.” Grab
a spoonful of full-fat Chobani
for your face and neck, and let it
sit for 20 minutes while you finish
your Netflix binge. You’ll end up
with baby-smooth skin.
4. Your hair serum is a secret weapon. Almost every woman
has a silicone- and oil-based hair serum in her hair arsenal to tame frizz and
enhance shine, but why should the action stop there? If you’re prone to
blisters and irritation on the backs of your feet from wearing uncomfortable
heels, try dabbing a couple of drops of serum there before slipping into your
shoes. Any light hair serum, such as Herbal Essences Wild Naturals
Rejuvenating Elixir, will help protect against chaffing, blistering and
irritation thanks to super effective lubrication.
skin report|top secret beauty hacks
5. Deep condition, and turn your color up a notch.
Grab your favorite rich conditioner, such as Dove Quench Ultra
Nourish Conditioner, and mix it with coffee grinds. Yes, coffee.
The trick is to use already-dampened or freeze dried coffee. The
easiest method is to combine half of an already-used K-cup pod
with four to five tablespoons of deep conditioner. Apply it to your
hair, wrap in a warm towel and let it sit for 30 minutes. By the time
you rinse your hair, you’ll have a rich, brown shimmer and the
softest mane in town. This only works for darker hair tones, so if
you’re a platinum blonde, skip to the next hack.
6. Treat your legs like
your face. We shave our legs, leave
them exposed to the elements and hardly
treat them with the love and respect we
give our faces; so, imagine how gloriously
soft they’d be if we shaved with a facialquality
product? One of the best hacks
around is using a cold cream, such as
go-to classic Pond’s Cold Cream
Cleanser, for a super, silky smooth
shaving cream. Legs will come out with a
close, buttery smooth shave — and you
don’t have to wait until you run out of your
regular shave gel to try this trick.
skin report|top secret beauty hacks
7. Use mascara as
a gel liner. Graphic
gel liner is everything right
now, and there’s no reason
you have to run out to buy
another product if you’re
just trying the trend on for
size. Just remove the wand
from your favorite smooth
mascara, like Maybelline
Volum’ Express The
Colossal Waterproof
Mascara, dip your angled
liner brush in and go to town.
Easy peasy! And this is a
great hack for slimming down
your travel kit, too.
8. Can’t draw straight, matching
eyeliner lines? Fear not — grab a little
3M Scotch Magic Tape and position it
so it’s angled from below your lower lash
line to the outer corner of your eyebrow.
Use this as a guide to trace about two to
four millimeters of black eyeliner to create
the perfect cat eye.
9. Vaseline can do just about anything.
When in doubt, grab your trusty jar of Vaseline
and turn broken beauty products into new ones.
Try mixing cracked brown or black eye shadows
(matte-only) with some Vaseline until you get a
rich, brownish gel. Dab some on brows, and brush
through for a DIY brow gel that rivals the expensive
stuff. If you’re a serious nail art pro, you can also
try tracing your cuticles with some Vaseline before
getting creative. Polish can’t stick to petroleum jelly,
so your cleanup after will be as easy as a quick wipe
down after nails have dried.
Get Skin Fall Ready
by Aly Walansky
When seasons change, so should your skin care
routine. But to maintain optimal skin health, don’t
be so quick to put away summer sunscreens
when cooler weather creeps in.
“Your skin is more sensitive in fall and winter
weather conditions, and many sunscreens contain
moisturizers that will help combat the change
in weather’s harsh effects on your skin,” says
Dr. Jill Waibel, a board-certified dermatologist
specializing in cutaneous laser surgery, and the
medical director and owner of Miami Dermatology
and Laser Institute in Miami.
While summer was all about keeping it simple,
protecting ourselves from the sun’s damaging
effects and keeping our skin moisturized,
transitioning through fall is all about, well, the
same thing! Cooler temperatures in many parts
of the country can be deceiving, and the harsh
effects of the sun take on a bit of subtlety.
Cleanse smartly
Start with great cleansing
rituals to create a
fantastic base before
applying products. “Make
sure you are cleansing,
toning and moisturizing,
but stay away from
alcohol-laden toners.
It all starts with a great
canvas,” says Gina
Capano, expert stylist and co-founder of Luxebar.
A great gentle option is Neutrogena Ultra
Gentle Daily Cleanser.
David E. Bank, a board-certified dermatologist,
assistant clinical professor of dermatology at
Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and
author of "Beautiful Skin: Every Woman's Guide
to Looking Her Best at Any Age." There are a
lot of exfoliating options out there, but you can
stay on a budget by using a household favorite.
Baking soda is a great exfoliant because it is so
fine and really gets the dead skin off. Add a little
water to the baking soda — Arm & Hammer
is a classic — to make a paste, and rub in small
circular motions all over the face, avoiding the
eye area. Rinse and pat dry with a clean towel.
Reduce stress and wrinkles
Your summer glow is partially attributed to a
relaxed state of mind. Stress causes wrinkles
as people are more likely to make cringing
facial expressions during this emotional state,
Bank says. In addition to finding ways to help
reduce stress, such as regular exercise, also
opt for an anti-aging treatment that
contains retinol or vitamin C, such as
RoC Retinol Correxion Deep
Wrinkle Moisturizer.
Remove dead skin cells
The sand at the beach and regular shaving
during the summer both act as natural exfoliators
for the body. To preserve smooth and dewy
skin, opt for a gentle, at-home exfoliator twice
a week to slough off dead skin, suggests Dr.
UV protection
The most important tip for fall is to remember
your tendency to burn, so knowing your skin type
is key. UV protection must be worn every day and
should include the lips and any body part that is
exposed, including hands, says Highland Park,
Ill., skin specialist, Dr. Josie Tenore.
With the hands, you must apply SPF as often as
you wash them, more than the rest of the skin.
When it gets cooler it’s easy to forget to reapply
UV protection every two hours.
Beauty balm, color control,
tinted moisturizer and
foundation
Frankly, this sector of cosmetics is a bit
overwhelming for most of us. So let’s make it
simple: Tinted moisturizer’s younger, hipper sister
is a beauty balm, aka BB cream. It’s very similar
to a tinted moisturizer in that it’s designed to
impart hydration and coverage with a weightless
feel. A great weightless hydrating BB cream to
check out is Garnier Skin Renew Miracle
Perfector BB Cream. Then there’s CC
cream, aka color control (or color corrector) that
can help correct such imperfections as hyperpigmentation.
Looking for a skin-nourishing CC
cream with great coverage? Check out Lumene
Time Freeze Anti-Age Color Correcting
CC Cream Medium, which is designed to
protect against the signs of aging and contains
broad-spectrum SPF 20 sunscreen.
instead use my hands
to apply a BB or CC
cream, and then use a
brush to buff the skin. I
find that with my fingers
I can massage the
product on smoothly
using circular motions
to create an even base.
I build on the BB cream
based on my coverage needs,” Capano says. If
you’re having trouble, try a sponge, but stay way
from using a brush or you may end up with a
streaky finish.
TIP:
If you find that you’re routinely
experiencing an uneven application with
dry patches after applying your BB cream,
consider re-evaluating your routine. Kick
it up a notch in the moisture department,
exfoliate as often as twice a week and
increase your water intake. You also should
think about the type of moisturizer you are
using before applying your BB cream.
Choosing between the two is all about desired
coverage and skin type. “The best way to figure
out what works best for you is trial and error. Test
different products for all-day wear. What does your
skin look like after a full day of wear? How does
your skin feel? Are you achieving the coverage
you hoped for? Does it feel natural?” Capano
says. You can even try layering both a CC and a
BB cream to even out your skin tone, while still
giving yourself that needed hydration. CC creams
also can be used underneath a foundation.
Application tips
Hair Color
gets
Deepby Kristin Finn
Sure, highlights are great, and ombre is still relevant, but
Beauty Within spotlights how rich, deep color is back for fall.
Stressed-out summer hair now will have its
chance to recover from the damage done by
the sun, salt and chlorine. With the arrival of fall
comes a return to rich, deep hair color. And many
experts have their special recommendations on
how to transition your hair color this season.
Kitty Nadel, color director for Ted Gibson,
explains that as summer tans fade, darker and
richer tones usually look better on paler skin.
“The summer wreaks havoc on hair, so this is
a good chance to go darker. It gives your hair a
break from over-processing.”
Instincts Crema Keratina, a collection
of ammonia-free demi-permanent colors
formulated to give darker hair a boost. Keratin,
beeswax, aloe and antioxidants are used in
formulas to smooth and protect hair.
For other at-home options, try Garnier
Nutrisse Ultra Color Permanent
Preference Glam Lights Hair Color. When
using color at home, Nadel suggests staying close
to your own color and “visiting a colorist if you’re
going more than two levels off of that.”
What hair colors can we expect to see pop
up this season?
“In the fall, the sunlight is at a different angle,
so trees begin to pop with gorgeous, rich color.
This inspires us to emulate it through our hair
color,” says James Corbett, color director at
Clairol, who predicts black hair color will have a
slight accent sheen; browns will continue to be
warm and golden; reds will be brighter with more
auburn and less violet undertone; and blondes
will be rich with more baby blonde hues and
less yellow. He suggests Clairol Natural
such “vibrant colors [as] a dark auburn, rich
as “honey, caramel or ‘Goldie Locks’ blonde”
for blondes.
Reyad Fritas, creative director of Fekkai 5th
what’s most flattering on the hair. The natural
look is surely more on-trend, and women are
moving away from stark drama when it comes
to hair color.” To lock moisture in so hair holds
color and strands stay strong and vibrant over
Once you’ve achieved the perfect fall hair
The lips have it
by sd Modiano
Having a sexy, colorful pout will be this fall’s
ultimate beauty accessory. So when Revlon
launched Ultra HD Lipstick this past January,
they were on fleek! The lipstick, which is available
in 20 shades, is formulated to provide highdefinition
color with a lightweight feel. “The secret
is the 100% wax-free gel formula providing vivid,
silky smooth color in one swipe,” says Krystyne
Biser, senior director, global product development
at Revlon. Here, the brand answers some
questions about why Ultra HD Lipstick provides
what lips need for the upcoming season.
Beauty Within: What are Revlon Ultra HD
Lipstick’s innovative qualities compared with
what is already on the market?
KB: Traditional lipstick has a wax base, which
leaves a milky color. Revlon Ultra HD lipstick is
unique because it is 100% wax-free, with a clear
gel base. It delivers true, uninterrupted color with
a weightless feel and a smooth, even application
in just one swipe.
Revlon
Ultra HD Lipstick
One of our favorite ways to illustrate this, to
really bring what we are saying to life, is the
color swipe in our advertisement. We drag a
traditional, wax-based lipstick next to Revlon
Ultra HD lipstick to compare application.
As customers can see, Revlon Ultra HD’s
application is smoother, more even and bolder
than the wax-based lipstick.
BW: What ingredients make it so effective?
KB: The clear gel base provides the
infrastructure for Revlon Ultra HD’s smoother,
more even application and weightless feel.
The Revlon team of scientists worked closely
together to create a wax-free structure that
delivered high-intensity color with incredible
glide. Years of research and development went
into perfecting this new technology. We also
have incorporated a new scent to our lipstick,
a mix of whipped vanilla and creamy mango.
