SKIN REPORT
> Black Magic
Breaking into
the realm
of charcoal
skin care
BY BRIAN UNDERWOOD
It’s thick, it’s black and it’s been
used in emergency rooms across
the country to absorb toxins
from the stomach. It’s activated
charcoal, a special form of carbon
that has an increased absorbency
so it can latch onto contaminants
and clear them away. Until
recently, you’d probably never
even see the stuff unless you had
a few too many and wound up in
the hospital. But brands are adding
this wonder ingredient to all sorts
of skin care products for its ability
to clear away dirt, oil and grime.
“Think of it a bit like a magnet,”
says licensed aesthetician Jaime
Cane, director of education for
the skin care brand derma e. “The
porous surface of the carbon
molecule draws grime out of your
pores.” So if you have particularly
oily or acne-prone skin, this
ingredient can help big-time.
Here’s the science behind the
craze — and five products that
can put activated charcoal to work
for your skin.
SKIN REPORT
Freeman Feeling Beautiful
Charcoal & Black Sugar
Polishing Mask
1Is it a mask? Is it a scrub? It’s
both! Every guy with a T-zone
that looks like it got hit by
the Exxon Valdez could use this
wonder product. Once a week,
apply it to your skin and let it sit
for five to seven minutes so the
activated charcoal can vacuum
away excess sebum. Then gently
massage the sugary scrub onto
your skin to buff it to perfection.
Bioré Deep Pore
Charcoal Cleanser
2This foaming face wash
is infused with natural
charcoal to deep-clean
pores and remove twice as much
dirt and impurities as a regular
cleanser. Pump it into wet hands
and work it into a rich lather;
massage it into your face and
rinse thoroughly. Trust us, your
skin will thank you.
Yes to Tomatoes Clear Skin
Activated Charcoal Bar Soap
3If you hit the gym on the
regular, there’s a good
chance you might be
dealing with body breakouts
(sweat is the perfect breeding
ground for acne-causing
bacteria). This 95% natural
body bar can be used all over
to clear away pimples on the
back, shoulders and legs. Your
girlfriend will love the results.
Bioré Deep Cleansing
Charcoal Pore Strips
4Who doesn’t get some
strange satisfaction from
slipping one of these
puppies onto their nose and
seeing all the gunk that comes
out? The 2.0 version of these
strips adds activated charcoal
to the mix for even more porecleaning
power.
Yes to Tomatoes Clear Skin
Detoxifying Charcoal Mud Mask
5Slap a thick layer of this
mud mask onto your skin
(in private, when no one’s
looking, of course!), let it dry for
about 10 minutes, and rinse it
away with water. You’ll notice
smaller-looking pores, a shinefree
T-zone and smoother skin.
Skin SOS
BY ALY WALANSKY
survival skills
WHEN THE WEATHER GETS
COOLER, WE OFTEN FEEL
LASTING EFFECTS ON OUR SKIN.
COLD CLIMATES WILL WREAK
HAVOC ON A FACE THAT IS OFTEN
ALREADY IRRITATED BY SHAVING
AND OTHER HABITS THAT GUYS
MAY PRACTICE EVERY DAY.
THE IMPORTANCE
OF A ROUTINE
If you don’t already have a skincare
routine, start by thinking
about what your skin is like and
what you put it through. Do you
shave every day? Do you know
your skin type? “If you don’t know
what your skin type is, look at it
in the afternoon and see what
areas may be glistening with oil
and what areas may look dry
and patchy,” says cosmetology
educator Stephanie Johnson
(www.hairfacephoto.com).
Awareness is key to coming up
with a plan. Once you have a
plan, it’s important to execute.
8 • FALL/WINTER
Men, historically, have assumed
that beauty or skin care routines
should be left to the ladies. That’s
far from the truth: Skin is skin,
and it needs care. So get over
that dated notion and be willing to
try new things. If you feel that an
entire step-by-step plan may be
too cumbersome to take on right
away, start with the essentials and
grow from there.
HEED THE CHANGING
SEASONS
“Your skin care routine should
change as the seasons change,”
says Dr. Steven Davis, boardcertified
plastic surgeon at Davis
Cosmetic Plastic Surgery (www.
daviscps.com) in Cherry Hill, N.J.
“You’ll want to use moisturizing
products in the winter to combat or
prevent dry, itchy skin. Ingredients
to look out for include hyaluronic
acid, which helps lock in moisture;
glycerin, which draws moisture
to the skin and locks it in; and
urea, which causes cells to retain
moisture. Although men may
not think it’s manly, they should
develop a regular skin care routine.
Keeping skin clean, moisturized
and protected will help prevent
unsightly and uncomfortable skin
ailments caused by the harsh
winter elements.”

Winter Saviors <
SKIN REPORT
PREPARE FOR
THE COLD
As our skin tends to be
drier during the colder
months, dermatologist
Dr. David Bank (www.
thecenterforderm.com/
physicians/dr-bank)
suggests using products
with glycolic acid to lock
in moisture. And switch
your facial cleanser to
one with such gentle,
non-drying agents as
Cetaphil Men Daily
Face Wash.
EXFOLIATE
Don’t forget to exfoliate,
even during the winter,
to slough off those dead
cells caused by the harsh
weather. Many products
have been engineered to be
less irritating and have softer
mechanical exfoliators, such
as Boots No. 7 Beautiful
Skin Purifying Exfoliator.
Polyhydroxy acids, lactic acid,
glycolic acid and citric acid are
best for sensitive skin.
UP YOUR
SHAVING
GAME
Consider
changing your
shaving routine
by switching to
an electric razor
— they tend to
be less irritating
— and skipping
the aftershave,
most of which are
alcohol-based and
can be drying and
irritating. If you
prefer disposable
razors, use a good
shaving gel, such
as Nivea Men
Shaving Gel for
Sensitive Skin.
SHOWER
SMARTLY
Avoid deodorant soaps and
try using gentle cleansers and
moisturizing washes (without
fragrance), such as Dove Men
+ Care Body and Face Wash
and Nivea Men
Moisturizing
Face Wash.
Follow up your
shower with serious
hydration, Bank
says. That means
moisturizing your
skin all over every
day, preferably while
skin is wet.
A Product for All Seasons <
SKIN REPORT
Use your aftershave in more ways than one
If you latched on to the beard trend, you’re shaving less often, so you have
more aftershave to spare. That’s good because aside from cooling, scenting and
perfecting your chin area, aftershave is a potent warrior in the fight against bacne
(you know, back acne). Generally speaking, aftershave splashes and lotions contain
antiseptic agents to keep germs and bacteria at bay and also act as an astringent,
and that’s exactly what sweat- and acne-prone areas need. Try using a small amount
on the top and back of shoulders and along the upper spine, where zits pop up most
often. Added bonus: You probably won’t need any extra cologne. Try a sophisticated
classic, such as Giorgio Armani Acqua Di Gio for Men After Shave Balm.
Get whiter teeth even if you
eat tons of bright foods
We’ve all heard how healthy bright foods are, but because
berries and tomato sauce can leave our teeth just as stained
as our shirts, whitening boosters are a must. Try adding a peasized
drop of Truly Radiant by Arm & Hammer Whitening
Booster for a brighter smile, and make sure you keep an extra
tube on hand for stain-related accidents. “The peroxide in the
whitening booster is basically the same technology that’s used to
bleach hair and laundry. A good trick is to carry a teeth-whitening
booster with you in case you spill something and need to remove
the stain in a pinch, especially if you’re wearing white,” says Dr.
Jeffrey Rappaport of LAVAAN Dental Spa in New York City.
Make your body
wash work harder
Honestly, body wash that’s
just body wash is so basic.
Get more out of the handful
you use each day with a
product like Nivea Men
Active3 Body Wash. It
removes sweat and dirt from
your body while also acting
as a rich, lathering shampoo
and shave gel. It’s lightly
scented, too, so if you forget
your fragrance you won’t
feel naked.
FALL/WINTER • 11

SKIN REPORT
> A Product for All Seasons
Your face wash isn’t
just for your face
Every bathroom should have a good
do-it-all bottle of face wash, such as
Aveeno Active Naturals Men’s Face
Wash. This formula is gentle thanks to
real oatmeal extracts, but it also helps
slough off the dead skin cells that end
up clogging pores. Face wash isn’t just
face wash, though. Did you know you
can use mildly exfoliating washes like
this one with a nail brush and some
warm water to remove set-in stains in
your nails from time spent outdoors,
participating in sports or just generally
living an active life? If that’s not enough,
it’ll smooth out the chapped, flaky skin
on cold-weather lips with nothing more
than a washcloth and water.
Oh, so that’s what those wipes do
If you frequent the gym or do any type of workout,
you need to get your hands on a pack of cleansing
towelettes. They’re perfect for wiping down sweaty
faces, necks and shoulders after an intense set
because they easily remove dirt and grime while
leaving skin soft and hydrated, but the off-label uses
are even more exciting. Faves include wiping down
bacteria-ridden phone screens and gently buffing out
scuffs on sealed leather shoes — that one will save
you a trip to the local shoemaker. Simple Cleansing
Facial Wipes come 25 to a pack and
fit perfectly in bags and lockers for easy access.
Bar soap for the purist
Bar soap is a preference for many, and it can take
you well beyond the shower. Use it to “grease up”
stuck zippers or as makeshift spackle for tiny holes
left in drywall (run the bar over the affected area a
few times), or just add an unwrapped bar to your
T-shirt drawer and let the scent act as a manly
potpourri in your dresser. Dove Men+Care Deep
Clean Body + Face Bar is at the top of our list.
Landon
Donovan
dishes on
his Style
& Success
BY BRYCE GRUBER
Landon Donovan is the
U.S. Men’s National
Team all-time leading
scorer and assists leader,
and his successes
and effortless style are
unmatched both on the
field and off — which is
exactly why Neutrogena
selected him to be its
brand ambassador.
“Everything I do I try
to do to the best of my
ability,” Landon says. “For
me, I don’t waste time
doing things that I am
not going to do my best
in, so even being part of
the #RespectYourFace
campaign for Neutrogena
Men embodies everything
I believe in my life.”
Donovan was a 2009
Major League Soccer
MVP and 6-time MLS
Cup champion, and he
lived the dream of boys
and men around the
world by playing in three
World Cups.
“When I was playing it
was simple,” he explains.
“I just did what I had to do
to make myself the best.
Now that I am retired and
have stopped playing
professionally, there’s all
sorts of fun and exciting
things that I get to try
and learn, and get to
experience. So no matter
what it is, I just do it to the
best of my ability. I am
learning to play tennis.
I play against my wife,
who kills me every time.
I’m also trying my hand
at golf. Most important,
I am just enjoying being
present in my daily life,
being a good husband
and a better brother and
son because I have been
away from my family
for so many years just
based on my professional
soccer schedule; these
are important things I get
to focus on now.” And it
doesn’t end there: When
he’s not spending time
with his family or taking
up new sports, Donovan
is dishing on improving
men’s appearances, style
and overall well-being.
14 • FALL/WINTER

FALL/WINTER • 15

LANDON DONOVAN
“I always wash my face and
apply a face lotion with SPF, like
Neutrogena Men Age Fighter
Face Moisturizer Lotion
SPF 15,” he says. “I have to
admit that when I was younger,
I didn’t take sun protection very
seriously. My father is a skin
cancer survivor, so now I always
make sure that I use at least an
SPF 15 on my face and body
every day. I think it’s important to
stay well-groomed overall so you
can put your best face forward.
Whether you like a clean-shaven
face or are
more of a beard
man, make
sure you take
care of yourself.
Personally, I like
the clean-shaven
look, so I like to
use face scrub
to get a closer
shave. But I have
also been known
to embrace a
bit of stubble.
Regardless, I use
sunscreen every
day, rain
or shine.”
When asked
what his one
non-negotiable
item would be if he ever found
himself stranded on a desert
island, his sun-protection answer
was unsurprising. “Definitely
sunscreen! I wouldn’t last 15
minutes without it,” he insists.
“My favorite is Neutrogena
CoolDry Sport Sunscreen.”
He adds that if he had a few
more items to bring, they would
easily be “chips and guacamole,
and my iPhone.”
He is emphatic about using
products designed for men —
performance is everything to
this world champ. “Stop using
whatever products are lying
around in the shower,” he says,
“or even worse, your girl’s
products! It’s like if I were to
take to the field without having
the right equipment designed
to enhance my performance.
Ever since I started working
with Neutrogena, I’ve come to
really take pride in taking care of
my skin. The Neutrogena Men
products are made especially
for what a guy needs, so it’s a
no-brainer.”
Aside from using Neutrogena sun
protection, Donovan tells us he’s a
huge fan of scrubs and cleansers:
“I just recently started using
Neutrogena Men Invigorating
Face Wash because it has this
minty thing going on that really
wakes you up.”
While his career and day-to-day
activities have changed over
the past couple of years, his
grooming routine is one of the
important constants in his life. “If
it works, I tend to stick with it,” he
declares. “Now that I am retired
I get to change up my daily
routine. That’s been nice, but the
basics have stayed the same.”
We asked women about the
biggest mistakes men are
making when grooming their
hair, and what to do about them
BY JAMIE STONE
WHEN IT COMES TO
A GUY’S GROOMING
HABITS, SOMETIMES
THE LADIES HAVE
QUESTIONS, AND THEY
AREN’T KEEPING QUIET:
“YOU DID THAT TO YOUR
HAIR?” “UM, ARE YOU
GOING TO COMB YOUR
HAIR AT SOME POINT
TODAY?” “HONEY, NO …
JUST, NO.” WE HAVE ALL
HEARD (OR EXPERIENCED!)
SOME VARIATION OF
THESE COMMENTS AT ONE
TIME OR ANOTHER, AND
WE’RE NOT ALONE. WE
POLLED SEVERAL WOMEN
FROM DIFFERENT PARTS
OF THE COUNTRY (AND
THEY THINK ARE THE
BIGGEST HAIR MISTAKES
MEN ARE MAKING, AND
THE ANSWERS WERE
Don’t be afraid to
use a little product
DOVE
(why are you afraid!?)
Men+Care
“If your hair needs some style, try Fortifying Gel
a little gel or pomade — it won’t
bite you, I promise,” says beauty
blogger Jen Mathews. A good one to try
is Dove Men+Care Fortifying Gel. But
remember that less is more. “I hate it when
men use too much product and their hair
looks crusty and is gross to touch,” says
Jamie Pollaci, a lawyer.
WAHL
Lithium Ion Rechargeable
17 Piece Grooming Kit
Don’t skimp on your haircut
A good cut is worth the investment of both
time and money. If you want a style you
are comfortable walking around with, find
a barber or stylist who fits your needs. “So
many men I know just go wherever is cheap
or convenient, and while that’s fine for a basic
trim (sometimes), it’s important to do some
research and find a great stylist,” says lifestyle
blogger Lara Eurdolian.
And aside from basic trims, with the rise of
such “hipster” styles as Mohawks and partly
shaved heads, it’s important to realize how
much maintenance is necessary. “They let it
grow out and it looks weird,” Pollaci says.
“My vote would be more frequent barber visits, or buying a razor and attachments
to keep on top of the style on their own.” A find such as the Wahl Lithium Ion
Rechargeable 17 Piece Grooming Kit will give you barbershop results at home.
CHANGE UP YOUR HAIRSTYLE
u
We all get stuck in a rut sometimes, but the
best way to get out of it is to make a change.
Put a little effort into your look and it will show.
“Oftentimes, guys will have the same style for
years, even decades,” says style blogger Roxy
Manning. “I say, get adventurous! Not sure
where to start? Go through magazines and
create tear sheets of hairstyles that you love,
take them to the hairdresser and experiment.
Hair does grow back.”
Don’t forget about your facial hair!
“There’s nothing handsome about a beard that’s been
overtrimmed and overangled,” explains lifestyle expert Bryce
Gruber. “A man’s beard is on par with a woman’s eyebrows —
a central focal feature that needs to come off as natural and
understated. There’s no greater investment for a man than a
really good beard trimmer that leaves natural-looking, clean
lines.” Look into a product like the Braun CruZer 6 Beard &
Head Trimmer since it’s multifunctional and easy to use.
Don’t ignore any hair or scalp issues
Sometimes we ignore problems hoping they go away, but when
it comes to your hair, you need to face them head-on (pun
intended). “You should be able to feel confident when you wear
dark clothing; if you have dandruff, deal with it,” says Hollace
Henderson, a public relations professional. Neutrogena T-Gel
Daily Control 2 in 1 Shampoo Plus Conditioner is great for
fighting any dry flakes.
A major issue as men get older is receding or thinning hair. If
this is happening to you, don’t be ashamed or embarrassed.
There are plenty of things you can do to make your hair fuller.
Try Men’s Rogaine Foam because it works (most important!),
and its foam formula makes it feel like a styling product.
THE ERROL
“The Errol, a thin strip mustache
inspired by cinema royalty Errol
Flynn, is big right now, and the
right gel can keep it neat and cared
for,” says André Richard Baldini,
owner and creative director of André
Richard Salon in Philadelphia. “The
mustache is trimmed to a thin, even
strip and is very manageable at
home. The Errol will give you an
artistic flair and a feeling of romantic
mystery.” So how do you keep your
Errol mustache neat and cared for?
Try L’Oréal Paris Studio Txt It
01 Deconstructing Gum, which
works well for style and shape.
Baldini recommends also using Free
& Clear Shampoo to remove any
buildup and keep facial hair clean
and free of bacteria.
THE NEWBIE ’STACHE
“First off, there is no magic elixir to
accelerate facial-hair growth,” explains
Kristan Serafino, celebrity hair stylist and
men’s groomer. “It grows at the pace it
grows and no faster. It’s also a myth that
shaving more often makes the hair grow
back thicker, darker or faster.” To get the
newbie ’stache (this would be you with a
fairly new, just-building mustache):
1. Begin with a few days of overall growth.
This will give you a broader area to work
with when you begin to style and trim.
2. When you’re ready to shape the
mustache, use a clear shaving gel or
apply a little Every Man Jack Electric
Pre-Shave Oil around the lip area so
you can see what your edging.
3. As the mustache fills in, be certain to
trim any wild hairs that are not playing
nice with the rest of your mustache.
22 • FALL/WINTER

Movember Prep <
WELL GROOMED
1. Groom and trim this mustache
regularly.
2. Trim the hair above the upper lip,
from end to end, using a Wahl Power
Pro Corded Clipper, Trimmer/
Detailer. Do not allow the mustache to
cover the entire upper lip.
THE PRO ’STACHE
Do you get five o’clock shadow at 11 in
the morning? You may just be brewing
a professional mustache, and it’s
extra-important to keep this one wellgroomed.
“This is the man who came
out of the womb with a five o’clock
shadow and has sported a mustache
ever since,” Serafino says. Some tips
for achieving the Pro ’stache:
3. Always wash your mustache before
trimming to soften the hair, then leave
the hair slightly damp while trimming.
But remember: Damp hair shrinks
slightly when it dries.
4. After washing, apply SheaMoisture
Shave Shea Butter Beard Softener
& Skin Protector Pre-Shave Oil on
your mustache to maintain a healthful
appearance. This conditioner will help
control unmanageable hairs and soften
the texture of the mustache.
THE ARTIST ’STACHE
If your mustache is a constantly
evolving work of art, this is you.
According to Serafino, “This is the
man who uses his facial hair as a
palette and isn’t afraid to make a style
statement. Remember that patience is
key. The best feature of hair is that it
grows back, so you can experiment if
you exercise patience.” To maintain an
Artist ’stache:
4. Style the length
of your mustache by
combing a pea-sized
amount of Pinaud
Moustache Wax
through the facial hair
with a fine tooth comb.
1. Use a fine-tooth comb to not only
clean your mustache but train the facial
hair to grow and lie flat.
2. Use trimming scissors to control
the length of your mustache and a
mustache trimmer to design the shape.
3. To reduce bulk in a close-cropped
style, use a fine-tooth comb to separate
and lift surface hair; trimming scissors
should be used to cut away the bulk.
How to
manscape
your brows
BY NADINE COURTNEY
(WITHOUT LOOKING LIKE YOU DID)
and your poor brows look
tortured. The lines are too clean.”
“Guy-brows should be full and
natural-looking,” agrees Kari
Ellen Winik, brow specialist
at Luigi Parasmo salon in
Washington D.C. “I always
say, ‘Let’s just clean them up, not
arch them.’ These overarched
brows are the reason men are so
hesitant to get their brows done.”
Let’s have a frank
discussion about
your brows.
There are supposed to be
two of them. Anything inviting
comparisons to a caveman
requires attention. And they
should not look like two stickers
slapped on your forehead at
precisely arched angles. There’s
24 • FALL/WINTER
a middle ground between waxed
European club kid and hairy
European grandfather, guys,
and you need to find it.
“It’s better to be completely
ungroomed then to be
overgroomed,” says Joey Healy,
celebrity brow specialist and
owner of Joey Healy Eyebrow
Studio in New York City. “When
you overgroom it looks obvious
Men have a higher density
pattern in their eyebrows, so
when you get too happy with the
tweezers — or even worse, with
wax — the geometry of the brow
looks unnatural. “Brows don’t
grow in a straight line,” explains
Healy. “When you overtweeze,
overwax and overtrim, everything
feels very blunt.” Healy prefers
tweezing to waxing because
you can take away one hair at
a time. Waxing is more severe
and is more likely to lead to that
dreaded, overly manicured look.

High Brow <
WELL GROOMED
Cleaning up your brows at home
is surprisingly simple. All you
need is a great brow brush, such
as Ramy Browtility Double
Brow Grooming Brush; a
small pair of cuticle scissors, like
Sally Hansen Cuticle Tamer
Ultra-Fine Cuticle Scissors;
and a pair of tweezers — check
out our favorite, Revlon Gold
Series Slant Tweezers.
Start by figuring out where your
brows should go. “It sounds
elementary, but your brows
should be on your brow bone,”
says Healy. You want to work
with your natural line, isolating
the brows to the bone itself. Take
a pencil or your brow brush and
rest it against the side of your
nose, lining it up vertically with
the bridge. That’s where you
want your brows to start, and
they should be equidistant on
each side.
Next: Don’t tweeze too much.
“Unibrows are distracting, but
otherwise most men could benefit
from only a simple clean- up,”
says Winik. Take the tweezers
and follow the natural line,
grabbing stray hairs outside the
brow line. Don’t overshape them,
cautions Winik; you’re just aiming
to clean them up. “Your own bone
structure guides the process,”
agrees Healy.
Comb the brows upward
with the brush and then
use the scissors to
trim any hairs that are
too long. “Start very
small,” cautions Healy,
“like only one-sixteenth
of an inch.” This will
avoid cutting too much,
which can lead to gaps
in the brows.
How often you need
to groom depends
on your age and
your ethnicity, but
remember that less
is more. “No more
than once a week is
good for most guys,”
says Healy. “If you
try daily maintenance
you’re going to
overdo it, and brows
should be effortless.
Once a week and
you’ll never look
like a slob.”
Q&A
“IT ALL BEGAN WITH A DREAM,” SAYS DAVID
BECKHAM WHEN SPEAKING OF HIS INCREDIBLY
STORIED LIFE AS A CELEBRITY ATHLETE,
MODEL AND CHARITY AMBASSADOR. NOW, AS
HE IS LAUNCHING HIS NEW FRAGRANCE WITH
COTY, HE CHATS WITH DISCOVER BEAUTY
WITHIN ABOUT HIS GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT
OF ALL — HIS BEAUTIFUL FAMILY.
26 • FALL/WINTER

FALL/WINTER • 27

Beauty Within: What do
you like most about your new
fragrance, Beyond?
David Beckham: I’ve had a
fantastic partnership with Coty for
the last 10 years, and what I like
is that together we are always
looking to develop and innovate
further. Beyond is another step in
that evolution, and I’m excited for
people to try it.
BW: How does Beyond reflect
your mentality? How do you
go about making sure you
accomplish your dreams?
DB: Having a dream is
something anyone can relate to.
Whether you’re young or old, we
all have dreams. I’m no different,
and I have always carried a lot
of passion into what I do, but
that means you have to work
hard, too. If you love what you do
and work hard at it, then special
things can happen.
BW: What does the tagline “It
all starts with a dream” evoke
within you?
DB: It reminds me of when I was
a little boy who just loved playing
football and had all these dreams
of playing for Manchester United
and England. That’s where it
all started for me, and it’s nice
to think of all the little boys and
girls out there today who are
dreaming big.
BW: What advice would you
give your fans about achieving
their dreams?
DB: It’s all about loving what
you do and working really hard
at it. There will be tough times,
but if you have the right attitude
and keep working hard, amazing
things can happen.
BW: Did you always dream of
becoming a football player?
DB: Always! My dad and
granddad made me fall in love
with football, and growing up I
had heroes like Brian Robson
and Bobby Charlton, who was
my dad’s favorite player. I wanted
to be like them, playing for
Manchester United and England.
Luckily, I reached my goals.
BW: What about fragrances?
Did you ever dream that you
would have your own scent?
DB: No, but I jumped at the
opportunity because I’ve always
been interested in them. I knew
with the expertise at Coty we
would have a great partnership,
and I’m really proud of the work
we’ve done together over the last
10 years.
BW: Do you have any dreams
you have yet to achieve?
DB: Of course. There’s a lot
I want to achieve now, from
building my business to my work
with UNICEF through my 7 Fund,
especially. And, of course, as a
father I now want to help make
my children’s dreams come true.
BW: What has been your
biggest accomplishment so
far in your life?
DB: Captaining my country
was probably the greatest
achievement in my playing
career. But really, my family is
the biggest accomplishment I
have. I’m so proud of Victoria
and my children; they’re my
greatest achievement.
BW: The bottle has very
geometric, nearly architectural
designs on it. What was your
inspiration behind this?
DB: With every fragrance, we
want to create a design that will
stand the test of time and look
as distinctive and strong in 10 or
15 years as it does today. I think
we’ve achieved this with Beyond.
BW: What was the advertising
campaign like? What was it like
shooting with David Sims?
DB: It was great to work with
David. I have a huge amount of
faith in him, as he always creates
such beautiful work — but he’s
also a lot of fun to work with. It
was an enjoyable couple of days,
and I really like the story line we
created together.
THE FIX
Dental Hacks
Tricks to
keep your
smile
top-notch
BY ALY WALANSKY
g
Improving your smile is an
everyday, multiple-times-a-day
job. As newcomers to gyms
who want immediate results
soon learn, those results
are only achieved through
repetition, repetition and, of
course, more repetition. There
are the obvious habits we all,
hopefully, perform: Brush at
least twice per day, floss after
brushing, use mouthwash and
visit the dentist twice a year,
but there are other habits and
nuances that can help you get
the smile you’re after.
B R U S H I N G T I P S
CLEAN TEETH
Get a good electric
toothbrush — they’re better
at removing sticky plaque
from the smooth surfaces of
your teeth. “The ultrasonic
vibrations of the brush’s
head vibrate the plaque off
teeth, similar to way the
ultrasonic scaler does when
you get your teeth cleaned
at the dentist’s office,” says
New York City-based dentist
Andrew Deutch (www.
rosenanddeutchdentistry.
com). Also, all toothbrush
bristles must be soft. Hardbristle
toothbrushes can
cause serious abrasion
and wear to your teeth,
so brush softly with a
soft-bristle brush. A great
option is the Philips
Sonicare DiamondClean
Rechargeable Electric
Toothbrush.
The way you hold your toothbrush
is important. It should be angled up
toward the gums at a 45-degree
angle to ensure the plaque by the
gumline is being removed properly.
FLOSS
Flossing is an incredibly important
part of your daily routine, but many
folks simply aren’t doing it enough,
or at all. “Most people don’t like
flossing because they don’t like
getting spit and food particles on
their hands, fingers or bathroom
mirrors,” says Dr. Ramzi Matar
(www.maitlandsmiles.com), a
Florida-based family dentist. “I tell
my patients to keep their floss
in the shower and floss as part
of their shower routine, thus
eliminating the ‘gross’ aspect —
but please don’t leave dirty floss
in the shower or your partner may
find it!” A great whitening, breathfreshening
floss to try is Oral-B
Glide 3D White Whitening +
Scope Flavor Floss.
Dental Hacks <
THE FIX
TONGUE CLEANER
“Some studies estimate that
80% to 95% of bad breath
comes from food, bacteria,
fungi and dead cells that build
up at the back of the tongue,”
Matar says. “Once patients
start using a tongue scraper
and see what comes off their
tongues, they rarely go back.”
Spoons, either disposable or
silverware, work just as well
if you don’t have a scraper
handy. A great one to try is the
Philips Sonicare BreathRX
Tongue Cleaner. You
can also try stashing a few
plastic spoons in your glove
compartment, briefcase —
wherever you can for on-thego
scraping. Plus, it’s much
less embarrassing carrying
around plastic spoons than
tongue scrapers!
WHITENINGThe best way to have
a bright, white smile is to maintain a
bright, white smile. Colgate Optic
White Platinum Express White
Toothpaste, Crest 3D White Luxe
Multi-Care Whitening Rinse and
Crest 3D White Luxe Supreme
FlexFit Whitestrips are all great finds.
Used regularly, they’ll help remove stains
and maintain that perfect smile. “The
best time to whiten your teeth, if you
are using an over-the-counter whitening
product, is after a professional cleaning,
as the teeth are plaque-free and will
absorb more of the ingredient to
whiten,” Matar says. “If your teeth
are too sensitive to whiten, use a
toothpaste for sensitive teeth for
about two weeks before starting
the process. This builds up a
‘tolerance’ that will help
eliminate the sensitivity
when whitening your teeth.”
Thinning Hair 101 <
THE FIX
Longer hair
and don’t care?
If you have longer
hair and no intention
of giving in to your
thinning mane, there
are still options (fewer,
but they exist). Mahesha
Woolridge, owner of
LaBella Pearl Salon
in New York City, says
the key is to get good at
blowout. “Use a volumeenhancing
shampoo,
add a thickening gel and
blow dry to give the hair
lift and volume.” Try Dove
Men+Care Fortifying
Gel for an easy-to-use gel
application. Work a dollop
in, blow it out and voilà.
Go with a
supplement
“By far, two of the most
impactful ways to benefit
your hair, skin and nails — or
any other part of your body,
for that matter — is through
nutrition and supplementation.
One vitamin that plays a
role in hair health is biotin.
Also a coenzyme, biotin
helps the body convert
food into energy, improve
liver detoxification and
synthesize neurotransmitters
for improved mood; it is
also used as a cofactor in
the production of certain
proteins, such as keratin.
Additionally, antioxidants and
oils that provide essential fatty
acids and vitamin E are also
important for the maintenance
and repair of hair, skin and
nails,” says Dr. Jeremy A.
Brauer, dermatologist and
director of clinical research
at Laser & Skin Surgery
Center of New York. Nature’s
Bounty Optimal Solutions
Extra Strength Hair, Skin
nails. The softgels feature
5,000 mcg of Biotin, an
important B vitamin that
supports skin and hair health.
It is the first formula to include
argan oil, hyaluronic acid and
antioxidants in a multivitamin
to specifically target hair, skin
and nail health.
THE FIX > Thinning Hair 101
Try a styling clay
“Clay is the way,” says
Yoni Kreger, partner at
Y Gallery Salon in New
York City. “Most styling
clays don’t use oil, and oil
is the ultimate enemy of
thin hair, weighing it down
and adding to your scalp’s
own natural oils. Clay,
on the other hand, adds
texture more weightlessly,
even though it seems
more intimidating when
you open the package.”
Try a versatile styling clay,
such as American Crew
Molding Clay.
It’s counterintuitive,
but longer hair is
not the answer
u
No flakes, ever
One of the biggest problems
men with thinning hair face
is dandruff and dry, patchy
portions of scalp. This can
draw even more attention to
an already receding hairline,
so keeping dandruff at bay
is a must. A product such as
Head & Shoulders Men
Full & Thick Advanced
Thickening Tonic is a
great complement to their
blue-chip shampoo and
conditioner lines. It goes to
work thickening each strand
of hair for a mane that is two
times fuller within two weeks.
“Many men think that growing their
hair longer gives them better options
for concealing their thin hair, but this
is the opposite of truth. When you
have long hair, it naturally clumps
together, so you end up seeing bigger
patches of pure scalp,” Kreger says.
“It makes a small problem into a big
one, and who wants that?”
