The lines are too clean.” “Guy-brows should be full and natural-looking,” agrees Kari Ellen Winik, brow specialist at Luigi Parasmo salon in Washington D.C. “I always say, ‘Let’s just clean them up, not arch them.’ These overarched brows are the reason men are so hesitant to get their brows done.” Let’s have a frank discussion about your brows. There are supposed to be two of them. Anything inviting comparisons to a caveman requires attention. And they should not look like two stickers slapped on your forehead at precisely arched angles. There’s 24 • <strong>FALL</strong>/WINTER a middle ground between waxed European club kid and hairy European grandfather, guys, and you need to find it. “It’s better to be completely ungroomed then to be overgroomed,” says Joey Healy, celebrity brow specialist and owner of Joey Healy Eyebrow Studio in New York City. “When you overgroom it looks obvious Men have a higher density pattern in their eyebrows, so when you get too happy with the tweezers — or even worse, with wax — the geometry of the brow looks unnatural. “Brows don’t grow in a straight line,” explains Healy. “When you overtweeze, overwax and overtrim, everything feels very blunt.” Healy prefers tweezing to waxing because you can take away one hair at a time. Waxing is more severe and is more likely to lead to that dreaded, overly manicured look.
High Brow < WELL GROOMED Cleaning up your brows at home is surprisingly simple. Start by figuring out where your brows should go. “It sounds elementary, but your brows should be on your brow bone,” says Healy. You want to work with your natural line, isolating the brows to the bone itself. Take a pencil or your brow brush and rest it against the side of your nose, lining it up vertically with the bridge. That’s where you want your brows to start, and they should be equidistant on each side. Next: Don’t tweeze too much. “Unibrows are distracting, but otherwise most men could benefit from only a simple clean- up,” says Winik. Take the tweezers and follow the natural line, grabbing stray hairs outside the brow line. Don’t overshape them, cautions Winik; you’re just aiming to clean them up. “Your own bone structure guides the process,” agrees Healy. Comb the brows upward with the brush and then use the scissors to trim any hairs that are too long. “Start very small,” cautions Healy, “like only one-sixteenth of an inch.” This will avoid cutting too much, which can lead to gaps in the brows. How often you need to groom depends on your age and your ethnicity, but remember that less is more. “No more than once a week is good for most guys,” says Healy. “If you try daily maintenance you’re going to overdo it, and brows should be effortless.
