Children are spending
long periods of time looking
down at their phones,
tablets and laptops. Looking
at these devices pulls
the head forward, slouching
the upper back and
shoulders, causing strain
on the neck. Muscle
spasms, chronic shoulder
tightness, headaches and
even neurological numbness
and tingling that radiates
into the arms and
hands are common symptoms.
Text neck can lead
to serious, lifelong problems,
like severe postural
changes, herniated discs
and early-onset arthritis,
but it is easily preventable.
TheraCORE Physical Therapy provides
Here are some ways to
posture assessment, more for children
prevent text neck:
• Hold one’s phone at eye
level. Leaning one’s
head forward just 30
degrees puts 40 pounds
of force on your neck.
Over time, this causes
excessive strain to the
neck muscles and pressure
on the small joints
of the cervical spine
leading to neurological
symptoms and pain. All
screens should be high
enough that your eyes
meet the middle of the
screen.
• Take rest breaks. Children
are not moving enough.
I tell my patients to set
an alarm, put the device
away and get up every
30 minutes. In a world
where there is an app for
everything, we need to
be encouraging our children
to get up and move.
the American Academy
of Pediatrics state that
children should have no
more than two hours of
sedentary screen time
daily. Limit screen time
for children by taking
simple steps of suggesting
to go outside and
take a walk, garden, play
with friends or family
members, or walk the
dog.
• Have good posture. Sitting
up straight with
your shoulders and head
back requires strong core
muscles. Most people do
not use these muscles
enough throughout the
day to keep them strong,
so specific exercises are
necessary to strengthen
the abdominals and upper
back muscles.
• Care for your neck.
Stretching and strengthening
the muscles of the
neck can help avoid stiffness
and pain. To stretch
the upper trapezius, lean
your head to one side,
trying to touch your ear
to shoulder and hold 30
seconds. Repeat on the
other side. Chin tucks
can help strengthen the
deep neck flexors that
weaken with a forward
head posture. Try lying
on your back, tuck your
chin back (give yourself
a double chin) and hold
10 seconds. The progression
of these exercise
should be safely taught
under the guidance of a
physical therapist.
Smartphones are not going
away, but we can be
smarter about how we use
them. Teach your children
how to look at their phone
with a neutral spine and
avoid spending long hours
on their device. If anyone
is concerned about their
neck posture, or they are
already having symptoms,
schedule an evaluation
with a physical therapist.
TheraCORE offers complimentary
injury screenings
where one of its physical
therapists can assess
your child’s posture and
make recommendations to
prevent long-term damage.
Learning, faith at the forefront
at St. Jude Parish School
St. Jude Parish School
in New Lenox has entered
a new phase in its 60-plus
year journey in guiding the
spiritual, academic, emotional
and social growth
and development of our
next generation of students
in grades preschool
through eighth-grade.
St. Jude’s mission continues
to be to provide a
superior Catholic education
based on the teachings
of Jesus Christ to help the
students acquire strong academic
skills and become
spiritual leaders. We provide
rigorous instruction to
meet the needs of our 21st
Century learners.
Instructional methods
are updated continuously
based on the latest academic
research. Curriculum is
implemented to address the
needs of all the students in a
differentiated learning environment,
all while adhering
to the Catholic and Illinois
State Learning Standards.
The success of our students
can be seen through
their consistently high performance
on standardized
tests, high school entrance
exams, scholarships awarded,
academic competitions,
and honor roll. The professional
and experienced St.
Jude faculty also takes pride
in providing not only to the
academic growth of our students,
but also to development
of the whole person.
St. Jude offers instructional
and competitive volleyball
and basketball for
boys and girls. Other activities
include, band, guitar,
school choir, crochet
club, small engines class,
STEM activities, reading
incentives, Battle of the
Books and science fair.
Of course, central to our
faith-based learning community
is the participation
of the students in many
service-related projects
and parish activities. St.
Jude students belong to
the Helping Hands Club,
which participates in many
service-related activities
throughout the year,
such as volunteering at
the soup kitchen, making
ornaments, visits to veterans
home residents and
collecting food for food
drives.
Each school day begins
with a school-wide prayer
and emphasizes developing
as servant leaders. One
day a month is a Focus Day,
which the students devote
time, talents and treasures
to a charity or community
group. Students are prepared
for their sacraments
not only by their class but
by the school community
as a whole. Students prepare
and celebrate mass
together on a weekly basis
and participate in various
prayer services throughout
the year.
Technology at St. Jude
is at the forefront of developing
strong 21st Century
learners. Students use a
fully equipped computer
lab and each classroom
has an updated Smart
Board. Students in grades
5-8 participate in a oneto-one
laptop program,
and a class set of iPads are
available for grades K-4.
School staff uses the latest
educational programs to
enhance instruction, such
as Discovery Education,
Edmodo and Dojo. Our junior
high students produce
a daily podcast that reports
information about school
and parish events, news,
student-related discussion
topics and more.
Our new pastor, Father
Robert Basler, is committed
to the role our school
plays in the parish and is a
strong advocate to our parish
school. He can be seen
frequently visiting and
interacting in the school
and guiding our students
in their spiritual development.
Our new principal, Mrs.
Kathleen Winters has a
lifelong commitment to
Catholic education and
comes to us with more than
15 years of experience in
teaching in all grades from
As school nears, remember to advantage of the library’s offerings
As students head back to
school, the Mokena Community
Public Library District encourages
parents and students to stop in and
see what their library has to offer.
“Our library provides students
St. Mary’s students rank above national average
St. Mary Catholic
School, located at 11409
195th St. in Mokena, invites
families with children
entering 3-year-old
preschool through eighth
grade to experience a welcoming
learning environment
that provides a foundation
for future learning,
faith-infused curriculum
and lasting friendships.
Benefits of a learning
community focused on
academics, faith and family
St. Mary School is a
vibrant and welcoming
Catholic school, serving
students in preschool
through grade 8. Since
1949, teachers have been
providing an extraordinary,
personalized learning
environment, allowing
each student to achieve
their full potential. As a
result, St. Mary students
continue to consistently
perform above the national
average on standardized
tests. Eighth-grade students
receive academic
scholarships to Catholic
high schools based upon
their high performance on
entrance exams.
“As parents, we have an
obligation to provide our
children with education,
love and support,” stated
Molly Gaus, St. Mary
School board president and
Mokena resident. “Since
we enrolled our daughter
in St. Mary’s, she has been
academically challenged
in ways that continue to
impress us year after year.
It’s the faith-based, family-centered
culture, however,
that we believe have
allowed her to flourish.
The St. Mary’s family is
something special.”
Exceptional learning
environment
St. Mary’s offers 3-yearold
preschool through
eighth grade. Visitors are
always impressed with the
school’s facilities, which
include a music room, library,
computer lab, science
lab, spacious gymnasium
and the new STEAM
(science, technology, engineering,
art, mathematics
classroom).
The STEAM classroom
allows teachers to bring a
unique approach of teaching
to enhance student
learning and understanding
of how all things relate
to each other, in school and
in life. Unlike other STEM
programs, St. Mary’s program
also emphasizes the
integration of the arts and
offers more creativity to
students in the learning
process. The STEAM program
and open classroom
setting allow teachers to
become more of a facilitator
than just a lecturer. As
a result, students are given
greater choice and learning
becomes about the process
instead of the product.
St. Mary’s also offers a
1:1 technology program
that provides each student
in grades 6-8 with an individual
iPad, a class set
of iPads for grades 3-5;
and grades K-2 have designated
classroom iPads
and SMART Boards for
educational use. Primary
students also benefit from
a certified reading specialist
and teacher aides.
Learn about numerous
extracurricular
opportunities and more
Students can enjoy
many after-school programs,
including band,
chess, bell choir, youth
choir, drama club, STEM,
yearbook, scout groups,
Student Council, social
events and an extensive
athletic program. Before
and after-school care is
available for a fee from
6:45-7:50 a.m. and 2:40-6
p.m. Bus service is an option
for those families who
Ingalls maintains high level of patient care with dedicated doctors
A common scenario in
dramatic movie scripts
begs the question, “Is there
a doctor in the house?”
One will have to be more
specific if they are asking
for Dr. Rahmani at UChicago
Medicine Ingalls Memorial.
Dr. Akbar Rahmani became
acquainted with Ingalls
Memorial Hospital
in the late 1970s as he was
involved in his endocrinology
fellowship at Cook
County Hospital, and he
joined the Ingalls medical
staff in 1980. He now
counts more than three decades
of ongoing patient
relationships, and that
dedication to his patients
inspired his children in
Understanding the importance of
South Suburban Hearing
Health Center is leading
the charge in getting older
adults to have their hearing
checked, and accepting
help, if needed.
The National Institute
on Deafness and Other
Communication Disorders
estimates that nearly 25
percent of those 75 and
older have a disabling
hearing loss. About 26
million Americans ages 20
to 69 have high-frequency
hearing loss due to noise
exposure.
New studies indicate a
link between hearing loss
and mental decline. For a
long time, hearing loss has
getting hearing checks
been considered a natural
thing and no cause for
alarm. But studies from
Johns Hopkins University
have found links between
hearing loss, cognitive decline
and dementia. That
means that it may be a
greater threat than imagined,
and that measures
as simple as hearing aids
could have a huge influence
on healthy brain
function.
In one study involving
2,000 men and women
ages 75-84, they’ve found
that over six years, cognitive
abilities of those with
hearing loss declined 30 to
40 percent faster than in
people with normal hearing.
A 2011 study of more
than 600 adults found that
those with hearing loss at
the beginning of the study
were more likely to develop
dementia than adults
with normal hearing. In
fact, the more severe the
hearing loss, the more
likely they were to develop
dementia; volunteers
with mild, moderate and
severe loss were two, three
and five times more likely
to develop dementia than
those with normal hearing.
Another study by Johns
Hopkins University found
accelerated rates of brain
atrophy in people with impaired
hearing compared
with those who had normal
hearing. In addition,
they linked hearing loss to
“deep episodes of stress,
depression or bad mood,”
an increased risk of hospitalization
and an increase
in the risk of falls.
Since we collect sound
with our ear and process
the sound in our brain,
we need to keep the brain
healthy in order for our
auditory system to work
properly.
If we have hearing loss,
it needs to be treated.
Hearing aids can be an important
part in doing that.
Students can find themselves at Marian Catholic High School
The high school years are a
pivotal time in a student’s education
critical at this important stage in
their life.
More than two decades
of excellence at Noonan
Elementary Academy in Mokena
Noonan Elementary
Academy is a private, independent
school with a classical,
Catholic curriculum.
Faith formation was the
inspiration for, and continues
to be, the purpose of the
school. Founded in 1995 by
Roberta and Joseph Noonan,
the academy has grown
from a few dozen families
to nearly 400 students enrolled
in preschool through
eighth grade.
Dr. Roberta “Bobbie”
Noonan said, “As the
founder of Noonan Academy,
I found it my vocation
to help guide children
spiritually and provide
the best educational experience.
It is here, in this
school, where students
will develop a foundation
needed to lead a successful
and fulfilling life. It is a
privilege to open the minds
and hearts of children to
the love of Christ. And I
am proud to say Noonan
Academy offers students
both a superior education
and the support of a warm,
Catholic community.”
The academy, located in
Mokena, recognizes that
each child is unique. The
school is committed to providing
each student with
an individualized plan for
educational success and
the structure for development
of the complete person
— mind, body and
spirit. Noonan Academy
maintains an environment
that is a catalyst to learning.
It has a teacher-to-student
ratio and various resources
that allow the gifted, average
and at-risk students to
maximize their potential.
Noonan distinguishes itself
by providing the most classroom
time, smaller class
sizes, the broadest curriculum,
extensive extracurricular
activities and a culture
that fosters strong character
formation and spiritual
growth.
Students at Noonan
Academy, on average, attend
school 185 full days
per year. This combined
with an extended school
day translates into as much
as 30 more days per year
or 20 percent more classroom
time than that of
other local schools. By the
time students graduate,
they will have benefited
from nearly two additional
years of instruction. Also,
Noonan offers before- and
after-school day care.
Noonan Academy’s dedication
to the overall wellbeing
of children is evident
in its rigorous health and
safety programs, which include
reverse osmosis water
system, HEPA filters in
the furnaces, high-shock
absorption flooring in the
gymnasium and a very detailed
nutrition policy that
encourages healthy choices
by disallowing foods containing
excessive sugar,
artificial sweeteners, colors
and flavoring, or any other
chemical additives.
Limited students are
still being accepted for
the 2018-2019 school
year; registration forms
are available on the school
website.
SS. Cyril & Methodius School students learn
together through faith, kindness, service
For more than 130 years, SS. Cyril
& Methodius School in Lemont has
provided area students from PreK-3
through Grade 8 with the opportunity
to receive an outstanding Catholic
education. Graduates go on to a variety
of local high schools, are placed
in advanced classes and receive
scholarships based on both academics
and service.
The school’s academically challenging
program is enhanced through
physical education, Spanish, technology,
art and music. Classroom
teachers departmentalize, providing
students the opportunity to work with
different teachers who have endorsements
in their assigned subject areas.
Along with the academic program,
our students have the opportunity to
be involved with a variety of extracurricular
programs. SSCM has a
dynamic athletic program offering
basketball and volleyball. Students
can also participate in newspaper,
Student Council, National Junior
Honor Society, choir, band, robotics
and chess on a regular basis.
During the year, there is also a
talent show and a spring musical.
SSCM also offers both a before- and
after-school program, along with
a uniform recycling program. Students
living in Lemont are eligible
to receive bus service from the local
school district, as well.
The facilities offer wireless technology
and smart boards in all of the
classrooms. There is a 1:1 program
for the junior high, Chromebooks in
our computer lab and four Chromebook
carts located throughout the
school. Textbooks are updated on a
regular basis and available online,
along with homework and grading.
SSCM has an outstanding faculty
and staff committed to meeting individual
needs and who are involved
each year in a variety of professional
growth opportunities. Through professional
development, teachers
have the chance to stay current in
best practices for education. SSCM
teachers work together on a variety
of “teams” to help provide extra
events and opportunities within each
classroom. Teacher assistants are
available and help the classrooms in
a variety of ways.
The school welcomes parents as
partners in the educational program.
SSCM provides a variety of opportunities
and programs for parents to
become more involved with their
child, both during and after the end
of each school day.
The entire SS. Cyril & Methodius
family welcomes prospective families
to tour the school, and it offers
“shadow days” for students.
The school is now accepting registrations
for the 2018-2019 school
year. Financial aid is available.
teamwork, and they tackle
challenges, like designing
and examining ways to
cut energy consumption.
At Chicago Christian
High School, students can
choose classes in biomedical
science and engineering.
Imagine your student
developing a prosthetic
Southwest Chicago
Christian Schools and
Chicago Christian High
School are dedicated to
providing a state-of-theart
learning experience.
The high school instituted
a one-to-one laptop
program this past school
year and plans to extend
this program to the middle
school. The elementary
campuses already utilize
computer technology in
their classrooms at all
grade levels.
Those interested can attend
an open house, and
the student can shadow at
the campus of his or her
choice.
