Welcome
ki uLearn mō te tau 2017. Piki mai,
whakatau mai rā.
Welcome to you all here at uLearn17,
in Kirikiriroa (Hamilton). Annually,
CORE Education/Tātai Aho Rau and
you, get together to participate in the
most amazing national showcase for
professional development. This event
is a part of the continuum of your
professional learning and development.
In uLearn there exists the opportunity
for you and your colleagues to connect
in one place and celebrate the very
best of education, learning, teaching
and collaborating. There is something
for all in the extensive programme.
No matter how many times you look
at the programme, you will be sure to
see another very exciting and useful
direction to go. Times are constantly
changing and, as professionals,
we are obliged to look critically at
the disruption, assess it and seek
to understand what it offers us in
supporting learner agency.
In keeping with our mission at CORE to,
“push the boundaries of educational
possibility,” technology delivered via the
internet will ensure that you are very well
networked. ShowGizmo allows you also
to stay completely connected to all that
is happening. Additionally, as we have
done now since 2014, we bring you CORE
Education’s ‘Connected Educator NZ’
(CENZ) to add a new dimension to your
experience. There will be a community
of professional practice to link to and
remain connected with beyond uLearn
itself. Connected Educator pulls together
online professional learning from across
NZ and beyond, to support digitally
networked learning. Many events at
uLearn are also part of the Connected
Educator calendar so follow activities
online (#CENZ17 @ConnectEduNZ)
and visit the Connected Ed team in the
exhibition hall.
Enthusiastic thanks go to our valued
with us all. My personal thanks go to the
CORE team as well as the Events Centre
extended team, who are working hard
in support of the conference to ensure
its success.
Finally, “good on you,” our participants,
for taking the time out to come along
and for being the essential ingredient
that will make uLearn17 the memorable
and lasting learning experience it will be.
Pōwhiri
A pōwhiri will be held to welcome uLearn17 delegates and presenters to Hamilton.
Where: Hui Te Rangiora Marae, 89 Clarence Street, Hamilton
When: Tuesday 10 October, 3.15pm-4.30pm
Marae: Hui Te Rangiora Marae
Iwi: Ko ngā iwi katoa o te motu
Kawa: Tainui
Awa: Waikato
Hui Te Rangiora is the name given to the urban, pan-tribal marae in Hamilton City by
Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu, and was opened in 1966. It was given to remember
an ancient place of healing that used to be in the Waikato, which was also called Hui Te
Rangiora. It was also the name given to the wharekai which stands as part of the marae
complex. Although pan-tribal, the marae follows Tainui kawa. The marae initially housed
Mill Hill Fathers (an order of Catholic priests) who were missionaries to the Catholic Māori
of the district. Hui Te Rangiora wharekai has an altar and pews at one end so that mass
can be held. The priests no longer administer daily to the people of the marae but visit to
conduct regular mass.
The wharenui (meeting house), Tuwaerea, was constructed under the guidance of master
carver Piri Poutapu and one of his most gifted students, Wi Kuki Kingi Snr. Other workers
from within the marae community helped with the construction of Tuwaerea, not only
building its infrastructure but also doing the carving, tukutuku and kōwhaiwhai.
Digital Badges
What are digital badges?
Digital badges are evidence-based certification of learning that, like paper-based
certificates, provide a record of your achievements. However, digital badges offer so
much more. Digital badges can link to ePortfolios and appraisals showcasing ongoing
professional learning, be displayed over multiple online profiles and social media, and can
have evidence of learning and artefacts of learning attached.
There are many different levels of badges, including badges that showcase your active
learning and growth through attendance at events, undertaking mentoring or completing
in-depth professional learning programmes.
Badges are stored in a digital ‘backpack’ and individual badges can be displayed across
your ePortfolios and online communities. The data, or evidence attached to the badge, is
accessible from wherever the badge is displayed.
