licht.wissen 19 No. "Impact of Light on Human Beings"

Light synchronises our “internal clock”. Lighting that copies daylight has more than just a visual impact; it supports bodily functions 24 hours a day. Booklet 19 is intended for all those who want to delve into the topic of Impact of Light on Human Beings. The 56 pages helps to get an overview of what melanopic light can effect. <strong>Light</strong>ing quality and energy efficiency
Good lighting is lighting that meets human needs – and nowadays also environmental standards. <strong>Light</strong>ing quality
and energy efficiency are not conflicting goals. With modern lighting technology, circadian effective lighting can be
realised without jeopardising energy saving targets.
[44] Example <strong>of</strong> circadian-effective lighting
in an <strong>of</strong>fice (37 m²): horizontal illuminance
and light colour change over the course <strong>of</strong>
the day.
[45] The older a lighting installation is, the
more energy it consumes. Depending on
the age <strong>of</strong> the installation, biologically effective
lighting may actually be a cost neutral or
even cost saving refurbishment option.
<strong>Light</strong> enables us to get our bearings, helps
us perform tasks at work, creates atmosphere
and can have positive health effects.
Energy-saving lighting solutions perform
these functions while making responsible
use <strong>of</strong> resources.
According to the International Energy
Agency (IEA), lighting accounts for 15 percent
<strong>of</strong> global electricity consumption. In
Germany, according to figures published
by the Federal Environment Agency, the
figure was 11 percent in 2011. So, intelligent
use <strong>of</strong> light can make a major contribution
to energy efficiency.
Intelligent lighting technology conserves
resources
Minimum efficiency requirements for the
operating energy consumption <strong>of</strong> lighting
installations are set out in the German Energy
Conservation Ordinance (EnEV). The
criteria and boundary conditions <strong>of</strong> use defined
in the pre-standard DIN V 18599 enable
the energy consumption <strong>of</strong> rooms and
buildings to be rated. The efficiency requirements
will become tougher each time
the EnEV is updated.
To ensure compliance with the limits or
achieve even greater efficiency, modern
lighting management should be used with
efficient light fittings such as LED luminaires.
<strong>Light</strong>ing control requires luminaires
that are dimmable. Daylight-dependent
lighting control can reduce energy consumption
by as much as 35 percent. Combined
with timers and presence sensors,
economies <strong>of</strong> 55 percent or more are actually
possible.
Maintaining lighting quality
At the same time, care must be taken to
ensure that the lighting quality required is
actually delivered. Workplace regulation
ASR A3.4 requires that work premises
should be sufficiently served by daylight
and furnished with appropriate artificial
lighting. DIN EN 12464-1 also stipulates
that energy consumption should not be reduced
at the expense <strong>of</strong> lighting quality.
A good lighting installation takes account <strong>of</strong>
light’s visual, emotional and biological effects
– and is energy-efficient at the same time.
