Goa lifts ban on fish import,
keeps strict vigil on border
The Goa government has lifted the ban on
the import of fish from other states, and
is keeping a strict vigil on border check
posts to ensure consignments entering its
territory are free of toxic chemicals.
The fish import ban was imposed in
Goa last month in the wake of formalin
scare and it was lifted last night.
Food and Drugs Administration
Minister Vishwajit Rane told PTI today
that teams of experts from his department
thoroughly checked fish-laden trucks that
arrived on the Goa border since last night.
The teams were stationed at Pollem is
South Goa, which borders Karnataka,
and Patradevi in North Goa along the
Maharashtra border. They took fish
samples from these trucks and did
on-the-spot analysis for presence of any
harmful chemical. No chemical was
found in the fish samples, he said.
The government had banned import of
fish on July 18 after the Food and Drugs
Administration’s (FDA) initial report
confirmed presence of formalin, a toxic
chemical, in them. Formalin was applied
on fish imported from outside the state as
a preservative, according to the FDA. The
chemical, harmful for human health, is
used to preserve bodies and prevent their
decay in mortuaries. The department had
later withdrawn its report.
“Testing of imported fish samples
started at Pollem and Patradevi check
posts from midnight onwards. Fourteen
trucks carrying fish from Karnataka
had arrived at the Pollem check post till
7.30 am today,” Rane said.
At Patradevi, three vehicles entered
the state and fish samples collected from
them tested negative for chemicals, the
minister said. The FDA will keep a vigil
at the border even during the day time,
he said. The Congress had stalled the
Assembly during the recently-concluded
Monsoon Session for three days over the
issue of formalin-laced fish, demanding
a thorough probe into the entire episode.
From January 2019, only tourists
to be allowed in Goa casinos
Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar
on Friday said that only tourists would
be allowed entry into casinos starting
next year, as the state government
seeks to restrict the entry of locals after
it was accused of despoiling the social
fabric of Goa by encouraging gambling.
“As a policy Goans will not be permitted
to enter the casino’s playing areas and
only visiting tourists shall be permitted.
A mechanism in this regard will be put
in place once the gaming commissioner
is appointed and appropriate rules for
regulation shall be formulated,” Parrikar
told the Goa legislative assembly.
The announcement came in response to
persistent demands by opposition parties
as well as civil society organisations.
Parrikar also promised that Goa’s
offshore casinos, all of which are floating
in the Mandovi river off the state’s
Goa Dairy to
launch basundi
next month
PONDA: The Goa state milk producers'
cooperative union, better known
among milk consumers as Goa Dairy,
will launch it’s packaged ‘basundi’ next
month. Basundi is a sweet prepared by
thickening milk.
The dairy’s managing director N C
Sawant said excess milk will be used
to produce basundi during the flush
seasons. “It will be launched before
Ganesh Chaturthi, only the costing has
to be finalised,” he said.
The flush period of milk production
in Goa is from October to March.
capital Panaji, would be moved out to a
designated gaming zone after which no
fresh offshore casinos would be allowed.
“The government shall identify
notified designated zones where
present offshore casinos can be shifted.
That means the government will notify
zones... Licences for offshore casinos
will be issued provided they grant their
willingness to shift within a year’s
time,” Parrikar said.
During this period, milk production
increases leading to a problem of
marketing and the dairy board has
decided to use this milk to produce
basundi. In the lean period, the dairy
would procure milk from other dairies
to make the product.
Sawant said the dairy isn’t investing
in any huge machinery to start the
basundi production line. Basundi will
be sold in packets of 200ml and 500ml.
The dairy may consider packaging
basundi in cups of the same size, in
that case it will need to invest in a cup
packaging machine, priced around Rs3-
4 lakh, from the funds sanctioned by
the National dairy development board
(NDDB), the MD said.
The board recently received an
instalment of Rs 7.91 crore of the
Rs 16.41 crore sanctioned for its
development and upgradation. A
Maharashtra-based consultant is
working on minimising the cost of
the product. At present, a kilogram of
basundi costs around Rs 350, but the
dairy is trying to lower the cost, a dairy
manager Sanjay Shahane said.
Parrikar seeks
Modi’s help to resume
mining in Goa
... Continued from Pg. 1
- depends directly or indirectly on mining
activities and a crisis in the mining
sector has spread to the logistics industry
in the state, an industry executive said on
condition of anonymity.
The latest mining ban is the result of
a Supreme Court decision in February
cancelling about 88 iron ore mining
leases in the state and banning mining
operations from March 15.
The Supreme Court had held the state
government’s process of renewing mining
leases of companies to be “in violation of
law” and directed the state government
to grant fresh licences through an
auction, Mint had reported on February
7. The order came on a public interest
litigation filed by the Goa Foundation, an
environmental pressure group.
