GOA STARTS ITS OWN
APP-BASED TAXI SERVICE,
A FIRST BY STATE
PANAJI: In a bid to end the vexatious
taxi issue in the state and meet the
long-pending demand of tourists and
Goans, the Goa government on Monday
launched a mobile taxi app—the first
state government to do so—and hoped
it would put an end to the perennial
commuting problem that has been the
bane of the sunshine state.
“Today, taxi business does not realise
its full potential. The requirement of
taxis will increase two to three times.
People will even stop using their cars
as taxis would be easily available. The
taxis will charge government approved
Parrikar seeks
Modi’s help to
resume mining
in Goa
New Delhi: Goa Chief Minister
Manohar Parrikar on Tuesday urged
a panel of Union ministers led by
Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari to
find a way to resume mining operations
in Goa as a court- ordered ban effective
from March this year has choked
economic activity in the coastal state.
Parrikar, who met Prime Minister
Narendra Modi and later attended the
rates,” chief minister Manohar
Parrikar said after launching the app.
“The taxi owners’ income will multiple
two to three times and with this app,
cheating of customers is ruled out,” he said.
Goa’s taxis have been infamous for
running without meters, overcharging
customers and harassing tourists. By
putting an app on the mobile - GOAMILES
that is available for download from Google
Play Store and Apple store—Parrikar said
it would make the journey affordable and
comfortable.
Within an hour of the launch, 120
taxi bookings were made through the
ministerial panel meeting in the capital,
told reporters that mineral exports from
the state has come to a halt impacting
the lives of about 1.5 lakh people and
that the mining sector is now staring
at total collapse. Parrikar said the
ministerial panel has assured him that
it will look into the issues facing the
app for the 350 taxis that have been
registered with GTDC, while the
passenger base had already touched
6,000 users even before the launch.
A taxi owner did not have to pay
anything and GTDC’s charges would be
recovered from the consumer. GTDC
will charge the consumer around Rs
20-80 as service fee.
natural resources sector in the state.
“Options are being considered
with respect to amendments in law
to remove impediments in mining,”
Parrikar told reporters here, without
elaborating what those amendments
could be. He said the panel will seek
legal advice in this regard.
The chief minister said he had
requested Prime Minister Modi to
give priority to resolving the mining
crisis in the state. The ministerial
panel will meet again later this month
with possible solutions to deal with
the court-ordered ban. Industry
representatives have argued in their
representation to policy makers that
about a fourth of the state’s population
Portuguese manof-war
spotted on
Goa beach
Tourists advised against
swimming
The Drishti Marine, Goa Tourism’s
beach safety agency has issued an
advisory for tourists as well as residents
to refrain from venturing into the sea on
Baga beach, as lifeguards have spotted a
cluster of Portuguese man-of-war, a jellylike
marine organism, washed ashore on
the popular beach in north Goa.
The marine organism is commonly
known as ‘bluebottle’ or ‘floating terror’.
The bluebottle spotted on Friday were
less than an inch in size, said Drishti
Marine in its communiction to the State
Tourism department.
Drishti Marine has cautioned that the
bluebottle could possibly be present in
the waters or along the shoreline. Even
wading into the waters is not advisable
during the monsoon as the sea and
weather conditions are not favourable for
swimming. While most jellyfish stings are
harmless to humans and cause only a mild
irritation, species like the bluebottle are
venomous and can cause harm on contact.
Even a dead bluebottle washed up
on shore can deliver a sting, said the
advisory to tourists.

WHO Hails Swachh Bharat
Mission, Says Over 3 Lakh
Lives Can Be Saved If India
Achieves 100% Result
In a statement that would encourage
Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM), the
World Health Organisation (WHO) said
that around three lakh lives can be
saved if the Swachh Bharat Mission is
implemented fully and properly. These
deaths occur as a result of diarrhea,
water-borne diseases, mosquitoes,
etc. The revelation came as part of
the initial results of the modelling
study on the health impact of the SBM
conducted by the UN body.
The WHO said, if India achieves
100 percent coverage in terms of
safe sanitation services by October
2019, many death caused by water
born diseases and protein-energy
malnutrition can be averted.
Helpline Of
Indian Railways
Is Being Misused
Whatsapp numbers 9004499773 is for
Western Railways, and 9987645307 for
Central Railways was launched with
the purpose of assisting passengers
with issues of cleanliness, and
punctuality. But little did they knew
what will happen next.
As per Railways officials, these two
helpline numbers are being mainly
used to share Good Morning messages,
funny jokes, shaiyaris, amusing poems
and more.
As of now, only 25 real complaints
have been received – 23 by Western
Railways and 2 by Central Railways.
Ravinder Bhaker, WR spokesperson
has confirmed that a dedicated person
has been allocated to check the
messages regularly, and to respond
promptly.
In January this year, it was reported
that Indians are #1 in the entire world
to forward ‘Good Morning’ messages.
In fact, Whatsapp’ servers experienced
a rare breakdown, when more than 100
crore such messages were shared by
Indians during New Year eve.
Interestingly, fake news and hatred
messages are also shared vehemently
on Whatsapp, and in order to check
this, Whatsapp has now limited the
number of forwards a user can send,
and have labeled forwarded messages
Adjusted Life Years (DALYs)—the
sum of the years of life lost due to
premature mortality and years lost due
stated.
The calculations revealed that if the
sanitation services are used, the SBM
could result in over 14 million more years
Entry fee for Taj Mahal,
other monuments hiked
Visitors will have to pay more to visit
Taj Mahal and other monuments, as
the entry fees for these sites have been
hiked for both domestic and foreign
visitors. For Taj Mahal, there has
been a increase by Rs 10 and Rs 100
respectively, from August 08, 2018.
On August 1, the Ministry of Culture
issued a notification stating that the
foreign tourists will now have to shell
out Rs 1100, including the Rs 500 toll
tax collected by Agra Development
Authority (ADA) while the domestic
tourists will pay Rs 50 as against Rs 40.
On the other hand, the South Asian
Association for Regional Cooperation
(SAARC) countries’ visitors will pay
Rs 540, including the Rs 500 toll tax
charged by ADA.
As per a report in The Times of
India, the Archaeological Survey of
India (ASI) has hiked this fee as part
of an entry ticket rate revision of 17
protected monuments. This list of
monuments includes six world heritage
sites in Agra and Delhi. Additionally, a
hike of Rs. 10 has also been imposed on
tourists from SAARC countries.
This is ASI’s second hike in the
entry fee at Taj in the last two and
a half years. In April 2016, the ASI
had raised the entry fee for its
protected monuments. The 'B' category
monuments’ entry fee has also been
increased from Rs 15 to Rs 25 for Indians
and from Rs 200 to Rs 300 for foreigners.
In Agra, the 'A' category monuments
ticketed include Taj Mahal, Fatehpur
Sikri and Agra Fort, while five 'B'
category monuments are Akbar’s Tomb
Sikandra, Mariyam Tomb Sikandra, Ram
Bagh, Itmad-ud-Daula and Mehtab Bagh.
Eight other monuments in Delhi
have also seen a hike in ticket prices
- Qutub Minar, Humayun's Tomb and
Red Fort, Khan-i-Khana, Purana Qila,
Tughluqabad Fort, Kotla Ferozshah,
Jantar Mantar and Saidarjung Tomb.
Additionally, the Ministry of Culture
has provided a discount for cashless
payment. The domestic tourists will
get a rebate of Rs 5 while the foreign
tourists will enjoy Rs 50 discount
per ticket in both A and B category
monuments, only if tickets are booked
online.
important events, the national flag made
Since plastic flags are not
biodegradable like paper flags, these do
not get decomposed for a long time and
ensuring appropriate disposal of national
flag made of plastic commensurate with
the dignity of the flag, is a practical
problem, the advisory said.
is possible that the broader mission
has produced additional health gains
through changes in personal hygiene
and the consumption of safe drinking
water,” the report said.
Sushma Swaraj on
Bali trip query
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj,
known for keeping in touch with people
over Twitter, had everyone in splits
when she said she will need to consult a
volcano in Indonesia in response to an
Indian’s query asking if the government
has any advisory for tourists visiting
the Southeast Asian nation.
“I will have to consult the volcano
there,” Sushma Swaraj said late on
Wednesday night in response to a tweet
by one Sushil Rai.
In his tweet, Rai said: “is it safe to
Mount Agung in Indonesia’s Bali
island, a popular tourist destination for
Indians, erupted on July 3.
Since June 28, Indonesia’s Centre for
Volcanology and Geological Hazard
Mitigation said the eruption had lasted
under two minutes, with the plume has
recorded increased volcanic activity
from the mountain, which has erupted
several times with different intensities
since late last year.
The eruption of Agung led to the
closure of three airports, including the
one in Bali, affecting 446 flights and
stranded more than 74,000 passengers.
The Indonesian archipelago is
located on the so-called Ring of Fire
in the Pacific, an area of great seismic
and volcanic activity, that records
thousands of mostly small to moderate
tremors every year.

Indian tourists to Sri Lanka
may get visa free entry soon
Sri Lankan PM Wickremesinghe has appointed a task force to
study the possibility of granting visa free entry to visitors from
certain tourist friendly nations to boost arrivals.
Setting the sails for
cruise tourism in India
Ease in facilities and new rules to attract more tourists
Indian tourists visiting Sri Lanka may
soon be exempted from visa requirement
as the government is mulling granting
visa free entry to visitors from countries
like India and China, Tourism Minister
John Amaratunga said on Monday.
Amaratunga said that Prime Minister
Ranil Wickremesinghe has appointed
a task force to study the possibility
of granting visa free entry to visitors
from certain tourist friendly nations to
boost arrivals.
India and China along with some
other European and West Asian
nations can benefit from it, he said.
Following recommendations from
the task force, this proposal may be
implemented in the off season months
of October to November and March to
April, the minister said.
Sri Lanka' tourism industry faced a
difficult time until a decade back due to the
civil war with the LTTE. However, in the
recent years the island nation has emerged
as a top tourism destination in Asia.
Tourist arrivals have recorded a
growth of 15.3 percent during the first
half of 2018 compared with the same
period last year.
India topped the number of tourist
arrivals in Sri Lanka at 206,337
followed by the Chinese tourist whose
figures stood at 136,294.
All tourists to Sri Lanka must obtain
an Electronic Travel Authorisation
On the basis of reciprocity, citizens
of Singapore, the Maldives and the
Seychelles are exempt from the ETA and
can obtain a visa on arrival free of charge.
Cruise tourism is a booming sector
worldwide but in India it remains
largely unexplored. To boost the
industry, the government has
improved existing schemes and
introduced some new rules.
One of the fastest growing wings of the
global leisure industry, cruise tourism is
set to sail in India too. The country has a
vast coastline, which, when clubbed with
its rich historical and cultural heritage,
can be a major tourist attraction; and
although cruises have been on offer in
India for a long time, cruise tourism
is likely to rise due to development of
infrastructure and easing visa rules.
The ministry of tourism hopes to
attract five million cruise tourists to
India by 2040, union minister of state for
tourism K.J. Alphons had said recently.
Development of cruise tourism is
looked after by a task force which
includes representatives of ministry of
tourism and ministry of shipping, along
with representatives of major ports and
stakeholders. In 2009, the task force
had given a green signal to foreign flag
vessels to call at Indian ports without
having to obtain a license from director
general of shipping. This facility was
extended up till February 5, 2024 in a
recent meeting of the task force.
“Government of India has taken
strong measures for promoting
cruise tourism in India and has also
appointed an international consultant
to develop it. This will help in
understanding immigration system,
CSF system, custom formalities, port
regulations etc. In the past few months,
a good number of cruise liners have
been showing interest, and in coming
years, cruise tourism will see a great
boost in India,” said Nishant Pitti CEO
and founder of Ease My Trip, an Indian
online travel company headquartered
in Delhi.
Further, in order to have uniform
processes at all ports, Standard Operating
Procedures (SOPs) were revised and made
operational in November, 2017.
“Developments have already started for
promoting cruise tourism in India. There
has been a stable rise in the number of
ships and cruise passengers calling on
Indian ports in the last few years. As
per the ministry of shipping, against 55
cruise ship calls for the year 2003-04, the
number of cruise ship calls increased to
158 for the year 2016-17,”said Pitti.
In 2017-18, 1,62,660 cruise passengers
and 139 cruise ships visited India at
six major ports-Mumbai Port, Chennai
Port, Cochin Port, Kolkata Port, New
Mangalore Port and Mormugao Port.
Google Maps is no
longer #flatearth
Go to Google Maps and zoom out.
Halfway out, the map’s perspective
changes from a traditional flat map view
to an interactive globe. Zoom all the way
out and the Earth is presented as a globe
with landmasses of the appropriate size.
Greenland is no longer the size of Africa
and all is right with the world.
On flat maps, it’s impossible to represent
land mass size on a relative scale.
Objects in the north and south become
distorted as the flat map compensates for
the flattening of the globe. This is most
evident in the commonly used Mercator
projections that properly represents the
size of land around the equator but supersizes
land in the Arctic and Antarctic.
Now, when Google Maps is used on
Desktop, users will see the appropriate
size of land masses. The update is great
but I have yet to find the giant ice wall
that’s preventing all of life from sliding
off the side of the flat earth and onto
the back of the giant turtle we’re riding
through the vast emptiness of space.
HP bug bounty program aims
to boost printer security
Bug bounty programs aren't just for
computing devices and apps -- HP
is launching a "first of its kind" bug
bounty initiative to boost the security of
printers. The program will see it partner
with the security crowdsourcing
company Bugcrowd to reward
researchers who spot vulnerabilities in
its printer lineup. Those who discover
completely new flaws will receive up to
$10,000, but even those who find existing
flaws may get a "good faith payment" in
the right circumstances.
Creative Artist Agency
The effort is an acknowledgment
that security threats are increasingly
spreading beyond PCs and networking
devices to target everything connected
to a network, whether it's printers,
security cameras or smart home
devices. HP doesn't want one of its
printers serving as a conduit for
a larger attack on a company, and
whatever it pays out in bug bounties
might be worthwhile if it helps printer
sales and avoids a public relations
disaster.
Rolls-Royce turns to robotic
insects and snakes for
future aircraft maintenance
Forward-looking: Despite sounding like
something from a science-fiction movie,
Rolls-Royce is planning to use robots
inspired by snakes and cockroaches to carry
out future maintenance on aviation engines.
As part of its IntelligentEngine vision, the
British engineering firm, which is separate
from the luxury car company, teamed
up with the University of Nottingham
and Harvard University for the project.
The plan is for miniature Swarm robots,
which measure around 10mm diameter,
to be deposited into the center of a plane's
engine while it’s still on the aircraft's
wing. They will carry a camera and a 3D
scanner that allow operators to inspect
the engine and look for any problems via
a live feed. The robots’ small size mean
they would be able to access hard-toreach
areas without needing to remove
the engine from a craft.
The Swarm robots will be placed in
their starting locations using FLARE—a
pair of ‘snake’ robots that are flexible
enough to travel through an engine, much
like an endoscope. These are also able to
carry out engine inspections and repairs.
Rolls-Royce also unveiled plans for the
Inspect robots—a network of pencil-sized
machines that remain inside an engine
permanently. Thermally protected from
the extreme heat, they could be used to
monitor an engine’s health.
Swarm robots
“There’s lots of things that aren’t ready
yet, there’s more work to do yet to get
this more mature,” said James Kell,
on-wing technology specialist at Rolls.
Getting the cockroach-like Swarm robots
back out of the engine is one issue that
still needs to be addressed.
“The aim is to service engines within
hours rather than days,” Kell added.
Rolls-Royce announced its plans at the
Farnborough Airshow, the same event
where Aston Martin revealed its flying
vehicle concept, which was designed in
collaboration with the engine company.
'Default' admin in
jail for 5 months over
objectionable message
in WhatsApp group
A 21-year-old group administrator of
instant messaging service WhatsApp
is behind bars in MP for the last
five months, following an alleged
objectionable message posted in the
group by a member.
A 17-year-old boy from Talen town of
Rajgarh district in Madhya Pradesh
allegedly posted an anti-national message
on the WhatsApp group on February 14,
Talen police station in-charge Narmada
Prasad Dahima said today.
Some people took strong objection to
it and filed a police complaint.
"Acting on the complaint, the police
summoned the boy and the then group
administrator, Raja Gurjar," Dahima said.
However, Gurjar left the WhatsApp
group soon after.
Two more members then became
administrators as per the sequence of
their membership, but they also quit
the group subsequently.
"Finally, Junaid Mev became the
group administrator as per the policy
of the social media platform," a family
member of Mev claimed.
On February 14, the police registered
a case against the boy who had posted
the objectionable message and Mev
under various IPC sections, including
124A (sedition) and 295A (deliberate
and malicious acts, intended to outrage
religious feelings of any class), and
the Information Technology Act. Both
were subsequently taken into custody,
Dahima said.
'Snapchat dysmorphia' is a thing —
and plastic surgeons are worried
Social media filters gave teenagers
versions of themselves with flawless skin
and big baby blues. What could go wrong?
Doctors have been worrying about
the impact that social media has on
self-image for a while. But now the term
"snapchat dysmorphia" has now made
it into the pages of the Journal of the
American Medical Association (JAMA).
In a co-authored opinion piece
(spotted by Inverse) titled "Selfies
— Living in the era of filtered
photographs," three plastic surgeons
sound the alarm about how selfie filters
are impacting people seeking plastic
surgery, especially those suffering from
the medical disorder body dysmorphia.
The way people look in filtered selfies
— with smooth skin, symmetrical
features, full lips, and big, sparkly
eyes — has become a new basis
Amazon &
Flipkart
Freedom Sale
kicks off
The e-commerce industry has come
up with various offers and discounts
for Independence Day. Popular online
shopping destinations Flipkart,
Amazon and Paytm, in competition to
each other, have rolled out discount
offers for its customers during the
festive season. The sale by Amazon
will continue for four days, i.e. from
August 9 till August 12. Flipkart on
the other hand will attract customers
through its three-day sale, while Paytm
Mall is set to have longest sale of them
all - from August 8 till August.
Amazon sale
As per the sneak peek running on
Amazon, the e-commerce giant is
offering over 20,000 deals across more
than 200 categories and more than 2500
brands.
To bring up more offers for its
customers, Amazon has also partnered
with the State Bank of India (SBI).
Discounts are also available on
electronics including range of mobile
phones, fashion products, home and
daily essentials. Exclusive deals and
offers are also available for Amazon
for obsession in people with body
dysmorphic disorder (BDD). BDD is
"an excessive preoccupation with a
perceived flaw in appearance," and
is a subset of OCD, that can cause
people to seek frequent plastic surgery.
According to the International OCD
Foundation, BDD affects about 1 in 50
people, and is even more prevalent in
people who seek plastic surgery.
In the past, the doctors write, people
would bring in photoshopped images
of celebrities to plastic surgery
consultations (which is totally cool
and not worrisome at all!). But now,
prospective patients — including
teens — are using filtered images of
their faces from apps like Snapchat to
inform what they want their faces to
look like after going under the knife.
"'Snapchat dysmorphia' has patients
prime members.
In its four-day long Freedom sale
on account of Independence Day,
Amazon has announced attractive
discounts across products including
smartphones, home appliances and
more.
Flipkart sale
Commencing August 10, Flipkart is
offering new deals and discounts every
8 hours. The e-commerce giant has
joined partnered with Citi Bank credit
card for heavier deals.
The sneak peek at the Flipkart
website claims attractive deals on top
electronic brands.
Offers are also being offered on
home appliances, kitchen essentials,
cameras, fashion products and
accessories. Books, toys and beauty
products are available at a starting
price of Rs 99.
Paytm sale
Other than Amazon and Flipkart,
a ‘Freedom Cashback Sale’ has also
been announced by Paytm Mall,
from August 8 till August 15, for
Independence Day.
Paytm has joined hands with
more than 1000 leading brands and
private labels for the promotion of its
‘Freedom Cashback Sale’.
During the sale offered by Paytm,
customers will be allowed to make
choices from a variety of products for
an attractive price offer.
seeking out cosmetic surgery to look like
filtered versions of themselves instead,
with fuller lips, bigger eyes, or a thinner
nose," the authors write. "This is an
alarming trend because those filtered
selfies often present an unattainable
look and are blurring the line of reality
and fantasy for these patients."
Snapchat dysmorphia isn't exactly
new. Earlier this year, a plastic
surgeon known as Dr. Esho coined
the phrase, and it was popularized
in several articles in February 2018.
A January 2018 study found that a
desire to look better in selfies was a
prevalent reason people were seeking
plastic surgery. And a 2015 study found
that "self photo editing and photo
investment are associated with body
dissatisfaction in adolescent girls."
But, come on, what were we expecting?
People have long sought out ways to
artificially perfect their appearances
with surgery. Now, instead of just staring
into the mirror or pages of magazines
in wistful dissatisfaction, everyone has
a pocket-sized Magic Mirror, showing
them how they could be the most
beautiful of them all — if only they could
look like Flower Crown filter, IRL.
The most concerning thing here is that
perhaps people wouldn't have otherwise
found flaws in a few pimples or perfectly
normal-sized eyes if face-tuning hadn't
existed. Perhaps body dysmorphia is
increasing thanks to Snapchat. However,
at this point, anecdotal evidence from
plastic surgeons, and opinion pieces like
Thursday's articles, is insufficient to
draw that causal connection.
Android users find
Aadhaar helpline
number saved
in their phones,
Google says it is a
bug from 2014
Just days after TRAI chairman RS
Sharma took social media by storm,
sharing his Aadhaar number on
Twitter and challenging people to
harm him, the Unique Identification
Authority of India or UIDA has
found itself in fresh controversy.
The UIDAI's helpline number is
being randomly saved by default in
many Android phones, and users
have no idea how and why.
The issue seems to be specific to
Android phones and isn't limited
to one or two telecom operators or
even one or two brands of phones.
Most Android phones seem to be
affected, and it doesn't matter if
you're using Airtel, Vodafone or Jio.
Update: Google has clarified that
the issue is because of a change
it made in 2014. And it has said
sorry for it. "Our internal review
has revealed that in 2014, the then
UIDAI helpline number and the
112 distress helpline number were
inadvertently coded into the SetUp
wizard of the Android release given
to OEMs for use in India and has
remained there since. We will work
towards fixing this in an upcoming
release of SetUp wizard which will
be made available to OEMs over
the next few weeks," said a Google
spokesperson in a statement issued
late on Friday night.
German start-up trials solar car
that can charge as you drive
BERLIN (Reuters) - A Munich-based
start-up has taken advantage of the
strong Bavarian sun this summer
to test the final development of the
charging system of its Sion car, an
all-electric solar vehicle that lets you
charge as you drive.
Germany will likely miss its target
of putting 1 million electric cars on the
road by 2020 but the government said
in April it was ready to offer support
to companies that make batteries for
electric vehicles.
Sono Motors, founded in 2016, is
developing the Sion, a fully-electric
vehicle that has solar cells integrated into
its bodywork. It can be charged via solar
power or from conventional power outlets.
Production will start in the second half
of 2019 and the company has more than
6,500 orders which it aims to start selling
at 16,000 euros ($18,540) next year.
Sion will have 330 solar cells attached
to the vehicle’s roof, bonnet and sides
and its battery system will offer a
range of around 250 km (155 miles)
before it needs recharging.
“We have a seat heater, there is
air conditioning, there is a large
infotainment system where I can
also connect my phone interactively,
which means I really have a full
vehicle which is very simple, has no
frills,” Laurin Hahn, co-founder and
chief executive of the startup told
Reuters.

A R Rahman: Don’t think India’s musical heritage is dying
Music maestro A R Rahman says
India’s musical heritage may lack
exposure but it is not dying as its roots
are deep in tradition and people have
a spiritual connection with it. The
double Oscar-winner has travelled
across India to find rare instruments
and hidden musical traditions in his
maiden non-fiction series, Harmony
with A R Rahman, being launched on
Amazon Prime Video on August 15.
The quest underscored what Rahman
always thought was true about India
— every street has a musical legacy.
Rahman will interpret these traditions
in a modern context on the show. “I
don’t think India’s rich musical heritage
is dying, only the exposure is dying.
People love traditions and it is beyond
anybody’s money or power. It (music)
is the lifestyle of so many people.
“I was talking about this place in Kerala,
Kalamandalam, where they have this
guru-shishya thing and they have a place
in Chennai which has a fees of Rs 370 per
year and they teach folk music, classical
music and dance. In Rajasthan, every kid
sings amazingly well and also in Punjab,”
Rahman told PTI in an interview.
The composer, who is credited with
revolutionising Indian cinema music
in his 25-year illustrious career, says
traditional music may lack exposure
but exists in a big way. “We can’t
generalise that everybody is watching
this… They have the options to watch
so many things. They have the option
to watch the purest thing or filth.
“What we see exposed is this big splash
of Hindi movies and Tamil movies. It
does not mean that all this (traditional
music) does not exist. It is taken by
families who create this legacy. It is
their soul. It is not dictated by money.
It is a redeeming factor in their lives.”
Rahman may be anchoring the show but
jokes that people should not have high
expectations about his skills as a host.
“I’m not like a traditional anchor. Don’t
have high expectations. I am not like
‘Lovely! look at this place, look at the
food’. I am not that charming. In my own
ways, I had these beautiful interactions.”
In fact, Rahman, one of India’s most
renowned musicians, says he fears the
burden of expectation “always, everyday”.
The series captures Rahman’s
interactions with artistes with an
impromptu jam session towards the end
of every episode. The last episode shows
Rahman put together a composition
with all artistes. On the internet, it is
all about the number of views one has
managed to garner, but Rahman says it
is “gross” to judge something like that.
“(Though) It does influence what you
are doing. We wanted this series to be
the Pradeep Sarkar film.
The trailer of Pradeep Sarkar's
Helicopter Eela, starring Kajol and
Riddhi Sen, has been much appreciated
since it was released earlier this week.
The actress’ character in the film
will have two looks – one as a young,
aspiring singer in the 1990s and the
other as a single mother in 2018.
In order to recreate the 1990s era, the
film's makers have roped in singers
that will be created over the course of 10
episodes by 20 artists. So, there you go,
40 reasons to be excited for Lockdown.
as these are instruments that are off the
radar and we are bringing them to the
fore. There is purity, honesty, there is a
legacy that we intend to bring,” he said.
“They have a pre-set legacy and we just
had to take it and make it shine. It is like
storytelling, like a movie, you go and see
their lives, each fascinating in their own
way. And there was no one telling ‘Ah,
this song did not work.’ So, you have
that artistic freedom,” he added.
The five-episode series is created
by Kavithalayaa. Harmony with A.R.
'I Once Spoke to SRK's Posters':
Rajkummar Rao's Bollywood
Journey is Truly Inspiring
It may come as a surprise but the
recipient of a National Award and
three Filmfare Awards to his name,
33-year-old Rajkummar Rao hasn't had
an easy start in Hindi film industry.
Rao recently revealed how Shah Rukh
Khan's inspirational story helped him
stay motivated and focussed to find work
while he was struggling to make a place
for himself as an actor in Bollywood.
“Growing up, I was fascinated with
Shah Rukh Sir––I used to stare at
his posters and often think that if an
outsider could make it as big as him,
then maybe there was hope for me."
In a post for Humans of Bombay -- a
page that catalogs real-life stories, Rao
goes on to narrate about his initial
days in Mumbai and how on several
occasions he had to 'share a meal' with a
friend as his pockets were often empty.
"I’d be like the 10th person standing
in some ad! I made about Rs. 10,000
a month––but still, there were days
where I didn’t have money, and I’d call
my friends asking to share their meal."
But Rao didn't give up hope. Simply
because he didn't have a 'Plan B'. He
was always on the lookout for work and
kept meeting with countless casting
directors, he said. Keeping faith in his
art, Rao added that 'smallest of roles'
did not demotivate him.
Preity Zinta
Back With A
Bang; Catch Her
Look In Bhaiaji
Superhit
Preity Zinta took to Instagram to share
her new look from her upcoming film,
Bhaiaji Superhit, as she shared the
poster of the flick
Bollywood actress Preity Zinta is
back to win hearts, this time, as
Sapna Dubey. The 43-year-old took to
Instagram to share her new look from
her upcoming film, Bhaiaji Superhit, as
she shared the poster of the flick.
"Back with a bang! Meet #SapnaDubey
in #BhaiajiSuperhit on the 19th
of October in a theatre near youu!
#PZisBack! ??" the Insta post read.
Zinta, who owns an Indian Premier
League team, Kings XI Punjab, is well
known for her roles in Kal Ho Naa Ho,
Koi... Mil Gaya and Veer Zara.
"I met with countless ADs and
casting directors. They would call
me in for the smallest of roles and I
would try to convince them to at least
let me try out the bigger parts...but I
was turned down. But I didn’t let any
of it demotivate me – I believed that
someone would see my talent."
With his hard work and talent, the
breakthrough role for Rao came with
Love Sex Aur Dhokha (2010). And,
soon, doors of Bollywood opened
for him and he went on to do Kai Po
Che!(2013), Shaitan (2011), Shahid(2013).
But it was his role in Queen (2014)
that he fondly remembers. Why?
Because Rao finally got the opportunity
to meet his idol Shah Rukh Khan.
"I was shooting in Mehboob. And
I heard that Shah Rukh sir was also
shooting there. So I thought this was my
chance––maybe I could go meet him. I
sent a message across to him––I didn’t
think he’d know me, but, he called me to
his trailer – he knew my entire bio!"
Awestruck and nervous, the Fanney
Khan actor said, "He made me feel so
special. I was already a fan, but that
day I was probably his biggest. I was
nervous and in awe throughout. I once
spoke to his posters...and now there
he was, in front of me. How can I even
explain what that felt like?"
In her first-ever international film
role in the Canadian film 'Heaven on
Earth' she won the Silver Hugo Award
for 'Best Actress' at the 2008 Chicago
International Film Festival. Zinta was
last seen in her self-produced comeback
film, Ishkq in Paris (2013).
Ekta Kapoor:
I don’t do
nepotism
Ekta Kapoor is one of the most successful
entrepreneurs and has produced a lot of
successful shows and movies. Along with
her shows, the characters and the actors
who act in it remain etched in people's
minds. Every actor she has launched is
loved by the audience and enjoys a good
fan following.
At the launch of Laila Majnu trailer,
Ekta Kapoor talked about Nepotism.
She said that she gets calls from
politicians and other big people to cast
their children in her shows or films.
As reported by Indian Express, at the
event, Ekta said, "Trust me I get calls
from politicians, actors, friends and
bureaucrats, who call for casting. My
mom says ‘You don’t answer these calls
and we have to bear the brunt.’ And I
tell her that I can’t help, it’s my job." She
said that there is financial stress when
she has to cast an outside but the stress
is lesser than not being honest to her job.
She had a message for the aspiring
actors. Ekta said, "I would like to tell them
that don’t stalk me. Don’t follow me, or
At 68, Hollywood star
"Don’t ask you politician and
bureaucrat uncles to get you cast.
That’s a dampener. Tape your work
and if that reaches me then be rest
assured that if you fit the role, you will
be cast. Your legacy or background will
not matter," said the producer.
Spanish daily ABC, which broke the
“Successful leader takes right decision
at right time. He recognizes friends and
selects faithful team members. Now it
is ten years long governance and I want
to join your team on very first day,” the
message read.
Well, this is not the first time when the
actor has been confused for the former
Pakistani cricketer. A month ago, the
actor had posted another screenshot of a
message which had a complaint against
a local police station in Pakistan.
Meanwhile, Imran's uncle Aamir was
reportedly invited to the politician's
swearing-in ceremony.
However, the Dangal star rubbished
reports, saying, "No, I am not going
to Pakistan and I haven't got an
invitation for Imran Khan's swearing-in
ceremony."
Imran was last seen in a romanticcomedy
drama Katti Batti alongside
Kangana Ranaut.

Meet The Telangana Farmers Whose
Kiki Challenge With Bullocks In
Field Is Winning the Internet
People around the world have attempted
the kiki challenge which involves
dancing alongside it to Drake’s hit “In
My Feelings” but it’s two Telangana
farmers who’ve won over the internet.
The video showing Geela Anil Kumar
(24) and Pilli Thirupathi (28) dancing
with gay abandon as they plough a rice
field with bullocks has attracted more
than 16 million views.
Not only that, comedian and Daily
Show host Trevor Noah has posted the
video on his Instagram page, declaring
them winners of the keke (or ‘kiki’
depending on who you ask) challenge.
It has also been posted by Bollywood
celebrities like Vivek Oberoi.
Geela Anil’s old parents, Nirmala
and Malleshan, who work as farm
labourers, are quite surprised by how
their son’s stardom has gone beyond
Lambadipally village.
“They’ve never used the internet and
have no clue about social media. It took
some time explaining to them how we were
suddenly so popular and why they were
getting that many calls from friends and
relatives,” says Anil, who farms, teaches
and acts in videos about village life.
The video, shot on August 1, was
Park The Car
A blonde walks into a bank in New York
City and requests a $5,000 dollar loan for
an upcoming trip out of the country.
The bank agrees but tells her she must give
them some collateral before they give her
the money. 'No problem. Here's the title to
my Rolls Royce, it's parked out front.'
The bank gladly excepts and gives her the
loan. As the blonde is leaving they all joke
about how she left such an expensive car
as collateral for such a small bank loan.
After a week had passed the blonde
returns to the bank to repay the loan and
the interest. The interest came out to be
$17.53. The loan officer asks her 'Miss,
why did you need the $5,000? We checked
into your account and saw that you are a
very wealthy lady.'
uploaded by movie director Sriram
Srikanth on his local YouTube
channel “My Village Show”. He says
got interested in the challenge when
he saw a message from police not to
indulge in it since it involved dancing
alongside a moving vehicle.
“So I went online and was amazed at
the number of people dancing to Drake’s
song. I’d never heard that song or that
artist before. But we loved it,” he says.
He discussed the idea with Anil
and Thirupathi. “We wanted to do
something safe and yet fun,” says
The blonde replied, 'Where else in New
York City can I park my car for a week
for only $17 and know that it will be there
when I get back?'
I have to pee
A mother took her
little boy to church.
While in church the
little boy said, 'Mommy, I have to pee.'
The mother said to the little boy, 'It's
not appropriate to say the word 'pee' in
church. So, from now on whenever you
have to 'pee' just tell me that you have to
'whisper'.'
The following Sunday, the little boy went
to church with his father and during the
service said to his father, 'Daddy, I have to
whisper.'
The father looked at him and said, 'Okay,
just whisper in my ear.'
Srikanth. Despite the duo practising
some of the steps prior to the video
shooting, some of the best moments in
the video occur unscripted.
“We were shooting, and the guys
were dancing, when suddenly the
bullocks stopped. Anil, without
missing a beat, went on to prod them to
continue and danced like never before.
We got lucky I guess,” says Srikanth.
How did they decide on bullocks as props
for the video? “Well, ours is a small village
where farming is the main occupation.
Seemed ideal,” chuckles Srikanth.
American tourist
takes unexploded
WWII munition
to Vienna Airport
A 24-year-old American tourist caused
panic at Vienna Airport when she put an
unexploded World War II artillery shell
in front of Austrian customs officials and
asked whether the "souvenir" could be
taken onboard her flight home.
Officials quickly called the bomb
disposal unit to remove and dispose of
the 7.5 caliber dud tank artillery shell.
The incident shut down the arrival and
luggage hall for 15 minutes.
Police said at no time were
passengers under threat. She was then
reported to prosecutors for negligent
endangerment and fined $4,694.
The woman had found the World War
II relic while hiking.
According to the Kronenzeitung
newspaper, the woman reportedly cleaned
the artillery shell in her hotel room so
as not to get her clothes dirty when she
packed it up to take to the airport.
Sky is no limit: Japan firm to
fly wedding plaques into space
SUDOKU
TOKYO: The sky is no longer the limit
for lovers looking for unusual ways
to commemorate their nuptials, with
a Japanese company now offering to
blast commemorative wedding plaques
into space.
Warpspace, a start-up based in Tsukuba
City outside Tokyo, is introducing the
new service in partnership with a local
hotel popular for wedding banquets.
For about 30,000 yen ($270), newlyweds
marrying at the hotel will be
able to emboss their names and design
elements on 16-by-eight-millimetre (onefifth
of a square inch) titanium plates
that will be loaded onto a tiny satellite.
The satellite will be taken up to the
International Space Station on a supply
ship, and then released by astronauts.
Customers will receive photos of the
craft carrying their plaques as it swirls
among the stars, Warpspace chief
executive Toshihiro Kameda told AFP.
"Space trips are not common yet but
couples can send up plaques that carry
their affections," Kameda said.
"I want them to spread their
happiness across the sky."
The company aims to make space more
accessible to ordinary people, he said.
"We want to make space enjoyable
and usable."
The satellite launch is not expected
until next year, but the company will
soon start taking orders from couples
tying the knot.
And while love may last forever, the
commemorative plaques won't.
The satellite is expected to stay in
space for one to two years, and will
eventually burn up in the earth's
atmosphere when it comes down.

Goa lifts ban on fish import,
keeps strict vigil on border
The Goa government has lifted the ban on
the import of fish from other states, and
is keeping a strict vigil on border check
posts to ensure consignments entering its
territory are free of toxic chemicals.
The fish import ban was imposed in
Goa last month in the wake of formalin
scare and it was lifted last night.
Food and Drugs Administration
Minister Vishwajit Rane told PTI today
that teams of experts from his department
thoroughly checked fish-laden trucks that
arrived on the Goa border since last night.
The teams were stationed at Pollem is
South Goa, which borders Karnataka,
and Patradevi in North Goa along the
Maharashtra border. They took fish
samples from these trucks and did
on-the-spot analysis for presence of any
harmful chemical. No chemical was
found in the fish samples, he said.
The government had banned import of
fish on July 18 after the Food and Drugs
Administration’s (FDA) initial report
confirmed presence of formalin, a toxic
chemical, in them. Formalin was applied
on fish imported from outside the state as
a preservative, according to the FDA. The
chemical, harmful for human health, is
used to preserve bodies and prevent their
decay in mortuaries. The department had
later withdrawn its report.
“Testing of imported fish samples
started at Pollem and Patradevi check
posts from midnight onwards. Fourteen
trucks carrying fish from Karnataka
had arrived at the Pollem check post till
7.30 am today,” Rane said.
At Patradevi, three vehicles entered
the state and fish samples collected from
them tested negative for chemicals, the
minister said. The FDA will keep a vigil
at the border even during the day time,
he said. The Congress had stalled the
Assembly during the recently-concluded
Monsoon Session for three days over the
issue of formalin-laced fish, demanding
a thorough probe into the entire episode.
From January 2019, only tourists
to be allowed in Goa casinos
Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar
on Friday said that only tourists would
be allowed entry into casinos starting
next year, as the state government
seeks to restrict the entry of locals after
it was accused of despoiling the social
fabric of Goa by encouraging gambling.
“As a policy Goans will not be permitted
to enter the casino’s playing areas and
only visiting tourists shall be permitted.
A mechanism in this regard will be put
in place once the gaming commissioner
is appointed and appropriate rules for
regulation shall be formulated,” Parrikar
told the Goa legislative assembly.
The announcement came in response to
persistent demands by opposition parties
as well as civil society organisations.
Parrikar also promised that Goa’s
offshore casinos, all of which are floating
in the Mandovi river off the state’s
Goa Dairy to
launch basundi
next month
PONDA: The Goa state milk producers'
cooperative union, better known
among milk consumers as Goa Dairy,
will launch it’s packaged ‘basundi’ next
month. Basundi is a sweet prepared by
thickening milk.
The dairy’s managing director N C
Sawant said excess milk will be used
to produce basundi during the flush
seasons. “It will be launched before
Ganesh Chaturthi, only the costing has
to be finalised,” he said.
The flush period of milk production
in Goa is from October to March.
capital Panaji, would be moved out to a
designated gaming zone after which no
fresh offshore casinos would be allowed.
“The government shall identify
notified designated zones where
present offshore casinos can be shifted.
That means the government will notify
zones... Licences for offshore casinos
will be issued provided they grant their
willingness to shift within a year’s
time,” Parrikar said.
During this period, milk production
increases leading to a problem of
marketing and the dairy board has
decided to use this milk to produce
basundi. In the lean period, the dairy
would procure milk from other dairies
to make the product.
Sawant said the dairy isn’t investing
in any huge machinery to start the
basundi production line. Basundi will
be sold in packets of 200ml and 500ml.
The dairy may consider packaging
basundi in cups of the same size, in
that case it will need to invest in a cup
packaging machine, priced around Rs3-
4 lakh, from the funds sanctioned by
the National dairy development board
(NDDB), the MD said.
The board recently received an
instalment of Rs 7.91 crore of the
Rs 16.41 crore sanctioned for its
development and upgradation. A
Maharashtra-based consultant is
working on minimising the cost of
the product. At present, a kilogram of
basundi costs around Rs 350, but the
dairy is trying to lower the cost, a dairy
manager Sanjay Shahane said.
Parrikar seeks
Modi’s help to resume
mining in Goa
... Continued from Pg. 1
- depends directly or indirectly on mining
activities and a crisis in the mining
sector has spread to the logistics industry
in the state, an industry executive said on
condition of anonymity.
The latest mining ban is the result of
a Supreme Court decision in February
cancelling about 88 iron ore mining
leases in the state and banning mining
operations from March 15.
The Supreme Court had held the state
government’s process of renewing mining
leases of companies to be “in violation of
law” and directed the state government
to grant fresh licences through an
auction, Mint had reported on February
7. The order came on a public interest
litigation filed by the Goa Foundation, an
environmental pressure group.
