Flash The Pearlies, Spaniard!
Says a 1990 study in the journal ‘Practica
Odontologica’, the dental practices found
by Spaniards in the new world in the
16 th century were totally different from
the ones done in Europe at that time.
They were of two types: Ornamental and
curative. The diverse types of ornamental
dental practices performed in pre-
Hispanic America had nothing to do with
the concept of Odontology, as the object
of these practices was to impart a type
of dental aesthetics different from the
classical concept of beauty. Outstanding
among such practices were inlays,
filing and polishing of teeth, and their
pigmentation.
Nicotine
Therapy
Of Native
American
Shamans
Says a 1991 study
in the ‘Journal of
Ethnopharmacology’, from
early pre-Columbian times
to the present, tobacco has
functioned as an important
psychotropic drug for magicoreligious,
medicinal and
recreational purposes among
the Native Americans who
employ six major and several
minor means of nicotine
application. It is known that,
even today, in shamanic culture,
the practitioners use Mapacho
and other forms of tobacco as
a way to smudge or to clear
energy. The shamans use it
along with ayahuasca to blow
on people during shamanic
ceremony to
connect with
the spirit
world. It is
also used
for
protection
from bad
spirits.
Medicine Among
The Mayans
According to a 1976
study in the ‘Southern
Medical Journal’,
medicine among the
ancient Mayans was a
blend of religion and
science. The priests,
who inherited their
position, received
extensive education.
The Mayans
sutured wounds
with human hair,
reduced fractures,
and used casts. They
were skillful dental
surgeons and made
prostheses from jade
and turquoise and
filled teeth with iron
pyrite. They treated
diseases like pinta,
leishmaniasis, and
yellow fever, as also
several psychiatric
disorders.
