Clowning With All Our Heart
Aurora “Bebop” Krause
Once we decide that we’re
interested in the Art of Clowning
we should certainly explore all the
educational opportunities available to
us at the local, state and international
levels. However, let’s try to remember,
was it our heart that first drew us to
this adventure of clowning?
We all know that ongoing
education is important, but we
must combine our sincere desire to
bring joy to others, along with our
striving to learn more. This concept
reminds me of a quote I’ve always
remembered by James Hinds; “People
don’t care how much you know until
they know how much you care.” I
mention this in some of my classes
because I know how eager we are
when it comes to learning new and
wonderful routines. However, let’s
allow our hearts to be our driving
force as we keep in sight our purpose
for clowning and all our efforts to
learn the art.
We all hear a familiar question
from time to time, either from
“regular” people (non-clowns) or
from our fellow clown buddies; ‘Why
did you become a clown?’ For me,
this is an easy question to answer. I
discovered early on that when I’m
in costume I create fun for others
and for myself, and the great feeling
of joy appears right on schedule. I
consider my ability to clown and to
teach clowning a blessing and a great
adventure to enjoy and share. My
approach to every clowning event is
one of gratitude and generosity: I’m
grateful for the opportunity to be here,
and ask myself how can my clowning
efforts create a joyful environment?
There are
certainly a lot
of things we
have to do in
life; some we
do for fun,
obligation,
responsibility
or tradition.
Now, think
back. Isn’t it true that it’s those things
that we do with all our heart that
matter most and bring us the most
joy? The point here is, before we
dive into that next routine or impress
everyone with our latest magic trick,
let’s make sure we have the right
perspective - Why did you become a
clown, if not to clown with all your
heart?
