Need Help Learning About Hemp Products?
By Stewart Lytle, Reporter
REGIONAL – In the confusing
and evolving world of cannabis
products, there is an oasis here of
information that is open to all.
To visit the Cape Ann Botanicals
shop at 8 Central Street, you don’t
have to spend $250 for a medical
marijuana card. You can bring
friends or family members of all
ages to the shop. You can ask as
many questions as you want of very
knowledgeable people, including
doctors and nurses.
And none of the products sold at
Cape Ann Botanicals will get you
addicted or high. Its products have
less than .03 percent per deciliter
of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC),
the psychoactive ingredient in
marijuana.
The shop on a major downtown
intersection looks a lot like a highend
beauty spa. And even the name
of the shop is non-threatening.
“We want to be here as a source
of information,” said Carla Villa,
IPSWICH – For almost 20 years, it has
been the dream of teenagers and millennials
here to have a skateboard park, a place they
could meet.
On Monday night, the Ipswich Board
of Selectmen will be asked to end those
years of frustration by accepting a $30,000
grant from the Essex County Community
Foundation to build a skateboard park in
Bialek Park.
But it is not just any skateboard park.
It will be The Switch Rideable Sculpture
Park.
Typical of Ipswich, the park, as the name
suggests, “is much more than a skateboard
park,” said Kerrie Bates, director of the town’s
Recreation and Culture Department.
to change the culture. There is 100
years of stigma to overcome.”
electrical device.
Yesair credits success in the Navy with lessons learned growing up in
Byfield.
“My father has always taught me that hard work will get you far in life and
helps you, as an individual,” said Yesair.
These four destroyers are forward-deployed in Rota to fulfill the United
States’ phased commitment to NATO BMD while also carrying out a wide
range of missions to support the security of Europe.
According to the NATO website, many countries have, or are trying to
develop ballistic missiles. The ability to acquire these capabilities does not
necessarily mean there is an immediate intent to attack NATO, but that the
alliance has a responsibility to take any possible threat into account as part
of its core task of collective defense.
U.S. Navy Aegis ballistic missile defense provides scalability, flexibility
and mobility. These systems are equally beneficial to U.S. assets, allies and
regional partners in all areas of the world. Positioning four ballistic missile
defense ships in Spain provides an umbrella of protection to forwarddeployed
forces, friends and allies while contributing to a broader defense
of the United States.
Guided-missile destroyers are 510 feet long warships that provide multimission
offensive and defensive capabilities. The ships are armed with
tomahawk cruise missiles, advanced gun systems, close-in gun systems and
long-range missiles to counter the threat to friendly forces posed by manned
aircraft, anti-ship, cruise and tactical ballistic missiles.
Destroyers are deployed globally and can operate independently or as
part of carrier strike groups, surface action groups or amphibious readiness
groups. Their presence helps the Navy control the sea. Sea control is the
necessity for everything the Navy does. The Navy cannot project power,
secure the commons, deter aggression, or assure allies without the ability to
control the seas when and where desired.
The ship is named after Medal of Honor recipient and Vietnam prisoner
of war, U.S. Marine Corps Col. Donald G. Cook.
“Donald Cook’s crew is second to none in competency, resiliency and
enthusiasm,” said Cmdr. Matthew J. Powel, commanding officer of USS
Donald Cook. “This team comes in to work every day ready to accomplish
the mission in one of the most demanding sea duty schedules the Navy has
to offer and I couldn’t be more proud to be their captain.”
Serving in the Navy is a continuing tradition of military service for Yesair,
who has military ties with family members who have previously served.
Yesair is honored to carry on that family tradition.
“My uncle served in the Army for a little over 40 years. My great uncle
served in WWII on D-Day,” said Yesair. “They both influenced me to join
the military through various stroies of everyday life in the military.”
While serving in the Navy may present many challenges, Yesair has found
many great rewards.
Yesair is proud of advancing to petty officer third class. In addition, he is
greatful to have been given the opportunity to serve in the U.S. Navy and
intends to complete 20 years of service.
The hard work and professionalism of more than 300 women and men
aboard Donald Cook are a testament to the namesake’s dedication and the
ship’s motto, “Faith Without Fear.”
Unique experiences build strong fellowship among the crew of more
than 300 women and men aboard USS Donald Cook. Their hard work
and professionalism are a testament to the namesake’s dedication and the
ship’s motto, “Faith Without Fear.” The crew is motivated, and can quickly
adapt to changing conditions, according to Navy officials. It is a busy life
of specialized work, watches and drills. Serving aboard a guided-missile
destroyer instills accountability and toughness and fosters initiative and
integrity.
As a member of one of the U.S. Navy’s most relied upon assets, Yesair and
other USS Donald Cook sailors know they are a part of a legacy that will last
beyond their lifetimes providing the Navy the nation needs.
“Discipline, hard work, time management, along with many other traits
have aided me professionally in the Navy,” said Yesair. “All these traits have
set myself up for a successful future in the Navy and outside of the Navy.”
The goal of the skateboard park
is to create a center for creative
expression, while engaging and
empowering young entrepreneurs
into civic contributors, the
application for the grant read. “We
expect The Switch will appeal across
cultural divides, drawing residents,
visitors, artists, athletes, performers
and spectators from across Essex
County.”
The park will allow “Boarders
perfecting balance, grace and style,
while musicians play and painters
paint,” the application states.
The grant is one of 11 creative
projects that were funded by a
partnership of the Essex County
Community Foundation and the
Barr Foundation. The grants, which
total $300,000, will fund arts and
ailments from pain and sleeplessness
to epilepsy and anxiety. Some of the
creams it sells are even designed to
help your skin.
Kalker, working with his brother,
Kurt, a 25-year licensed pediatric
nurse, and Villa, a daughter-in-law,
opened the shop six weeks ago.
The successful businessman is also
building two medical marijuana
dispensaries, one in Ipswich and the
other in Rowley
Besides seeing a business
opportunity, Spencer and Kirk have
personal reasons for wanting to
offer people hemp products. They
lost their mother and oldest brother
to cancer, and Spencer watched
three friends suffer and die from
cancer and diabetes-related illnesses.
Spencer injured a nerve in his right
arm, which causes numbness. And
Kurt had two motorcycle accidents
and 13 orthopedic surgeries, which
left him in pain that synthetic pain
killers do not relieve.
Hemp-derived products help
reduce their pain and they believe
could have helped their brother,
mother and friends. But since 1937,
until recently, such products were
illegal.
“The thing that frustrates me is
that so many people have suffered
all these years,” Spencer said. When
the laws in Massachusetts began to
change, he told his brother, then
living in California, “We can do
something about this.”
Cannabis has been around for at
least 5,000 years. It fell out of favor
in the U.S. because hemp competed
organization, was established
31 years ago by Amos and
Barbara Hostetter, who founded
Continental Cablevision.
The Ipswich Selectmen reviewed
the grant award last week, but
postponed accepting it while
it considers the impact of the
proposed skateboard park. It meets
at 7 p.m. Monday at Town Hall.
The skateboard park, which
would be developed in three phases,
derived its name from a combination
of terms. The Switch, as the park
may be nicknamed, denotes change.
It is also a nickname for Ipswich.
And in skateboard slang, switch is a
term that means riding backwards
and thus creatively and with greater
skill.
Each phase of the construction
would built about a third of the
8,000 square-foot hardscape.
The grant would be used to buy
materials. Most of the design and
construction would be donated by
local residents who have grown up
wanting a skate park.
with paper made from trees. The
U.S. Constitution, Spencer said,
is printed on paper, derived from
hemp.
Hemp in ropes also competed with
a new synthetic product, polyester.
When the federal government
began to tax and ban hemp products,
doctors complained that it helped
patients with pain. But then aspirin
was invented, Spencer said.
Today, it competes with some
pharmaceuticals, particularly
opoids.
While the Kalker brothers readily
concede that much more research
needs to be done on hemp, Kurt said,
“What I don’t see is why any doctor
would prescribe opoids, which are
killing people, instead of cannabis,
which has never killed anyone.”
Spencer said, “This product is a
miracle worker.”
When they opened the shop in
June, Villa expected most of her
customers would be older, pain
sufferers. Others would need help
sleeping, she said.
To her surprise, a large number of
old and young have come looking for
a non-addictive product to reduce
anxieties.
There was the grandfather looking
for something to calm his nerves
before he went out on a boat trip
with his six grandchildren. And there
was the father of an 18 year old who
came to see if Cape Ann Botanicals
had a product that could reduce his
anxiety attacks. He was prescribed
Prozac for his anxieties of going to
school or work, but the drug had not
worked.
The 18 year old came back into
Among those who are
volunteering their time and skills
are Tom DuPere, a sculptor and
painter with Artisan SkateParks,
Daniel Bates, an architect with
The Bates Design Collaboration,
Barbara Monahan, an organic
landscape designer and member of
the Town’s Public Art and Shade
and Beautification committees,
Thaddeus Sadowski, president of
the Sculpture In Open Spaces,
Alex Pechillis and Luke Butler, coowners
of Full Circle Independent
Builders and Phil Todisco Glass.
The Switch, which would be owned
by the town, has a governing board
that includes Steph Lavita of New
England’s Female Skateboarding,
Nate Newton: strategist, fundraiser,
music promoter and member of the
Bialek Park Planning Committee
and Emily Getchell, arts educator,
muralist and project muse.
If the grant is accepted by the
selectmen, estimates are that the
park would be completed in the fall
of 2019.
the shop a few days later with a big
smile. He told Kurt the morning
after he put a drop of hemp-derived
oil under his tongue was the first time
he had awakened without anxieties.
The shop offers 15 or 16 oils, which
range in price from $30 to $145. A
bottle will last between a month
and two months, depending on the
dosage. The oils vary in strength and
taste. Some even taste like chocolate
or mint.
Every product in the shop is vetted
by a third party lab and the staff. “We
have done our research,” Kurt said.
The other big difference between
Cape Ann Botanicals and most
medical marijuana dispensaries is
that it is staffed by Kurt, a full-time
nurse with certifications in hempderived
products. He also speaks at
medical organizations and attends
prestigious symposiums, including
one last year at Harvard Medical
School.
Questions about products are free.
But if more consultation is needed,
Kurt offers a 20-minute session for
$29.99, an hour for $99 and a threemonth
therapy course for $299.
On Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4
p.m. a doctor from Canna Docs is on
hand to prescribe medical marijuana
cards.
And on Sunday mornings, the
shop, which now occupies the space
Marty Donut Land was in for more
than 50 years, offers coffee and
donuts to customers.
“We wanted to pay homage to
Marty,” Spencer said.
MAGIC: THE GATHERING DAY
the first trading card game created and
it continues to thrive to this very day
came into existence. Michael and
SUNDAY, AUGUST 19th
FREE outdoor theater
festival
Maudslay State Park the weekend
of August 18-19 putting on four
full productions in two days. The
Theater in the Open Festival rounds
out TITO’s 39th summer season
with performances of each spring
and summer show produced so far
this year. On Saturday, Family Hour
in the Open is at 11am and A Jack
and the Beanstalk Panto! is at 2pm.
Sunday Much Ado About Nothing
is performed at 1pm and Medea at
5pm. The productions will feature
over twenty local actors, and five local
directors, including Artistic Director
of Theater in the Open, Edward
Speck. “After last year’s success —
bringing over 600 people into the Park
— we couldn’t be more excited to put
on the Festival again this year,” says
Speck, “having so many people enjoy
both our art and the beautiful state
park all at once is so gratifying. But
what really stood out to us last year
was the range of audience interest.
We had children who came out and
enjoyed watching Shakespeare, or
who saw Antigone for the first time,
and adults who howled with laughter
watching Family Hour in the Open.
We also had a lot of visitors from
outside of our immediate area who
came to see a TITO production for
the first time.” Family Hour is Theater
in the Open’s monthly performance
of singing, storytelling, and bubbles
aimed at children and families. Put on
by TITO’s Company, Family Hour
is a perfect introduction to Theater
in the Open for young audiences. A
Jack and the Beanstalk Panto! builds
on the themes and storyline from
the popular folk tale, Jack and the
Beanstalk. Directors Edward Speck
and Josh Shack have created a comedic
adventure for Jack and Jill that will
delight and entertain audiences of
all ages. William Shakespeare’s classic
comedy, Much Ado About Nothing
is a remount of TITO’s 1997
version, also directed by Bonniejean
Wilbur. Much Ado is the story of
love, mistaken identity, and family
honor. Much Ado About Nothing is
appropriate for audiences of all ages.
Finally, Euripides’ tragedy Medea is a
chilling account of a mother pushed
beyond the limit of suffering, exacting
revenge in the only way she can.
Medea is directed by Stephen Haley,
and features Newburyport actors
Sierra Gitlin and Edward Speck as
Medea and Jason. Medea may not be
appropriate for young audiences, for
more information call Theater in the
Open’s office at 978-465-2572. The
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) There might still be some
uncertainty about the decision you made. But a quick check of
the facts should reassure you that you’re doing the right thing.
TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The tidy Taurean needs to
be a little more flexible about accepting some changes to those
carefully made plans. You might be pleasantly surprised by what
follows.
GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Consider stepping away from
(c) 2017 King Features Syndicate, Inc. your concentrated focus on your new project for a bit so you can
get some perspective on what you’ve done and where you plan
to take it.
CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The understandably angry Crab might not want to accept the reason
why someone SeLLinG might have tried to hurt you. YOU But at least you’ll have an
insight into why it happened.
lEO (July 23 to August 22) There might be some facts you still need
to know before leaping onto LAUGhin
center stage. Best to move carefully at this
time so that you can observe what’s happening around you.
VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) It’s a good time to expand your
outlook by getting out and around, whether you do some long-range
traveling or just explore the great things to see closer to home.
lIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your wise counsel continues
to be needed as that family situation works itself out. Meanwhile, the
decisions you made on your job begin to pay off quite nicely.
SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your job situation brightens
thanks to all your hard work. Now, spend some time repairing a
personal relationship you might have neglected for too long.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Aspects favor
action in the workplace. Line up your facts and show your superiors
why you’re the one they’re looking for.
CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your hard work pays
off on the job. Personal relationships also can benefit from more of
your time and attention. Spend the weekend with loved ones.
AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Early feedback on your
project might be disappointing. But don’t be discouraged. Use it to
make needed adjustments, then submit it to your superiors again.
PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Flattery could lure the otherwise
sensible Fish into making an unwise decision. Be careful. All that praise
might be an attempt to reel you in before you can learn the facts.
BORN THIS WEEK: You have a wonderful sense of who you are.
You are a shining example to others, helping them believe in themselves
and what they can do.
in their mouths. However, once
bacteria colonize in the mouth,
children are more prone to cavities
in their baby teeth and permanent
teeth. How do they get the bacteria?
Caregivers.
Most parents don’t know that
they can pass harmful bacteria from
their mouth to their baby’s mouth.
The most critical time is during
the child’s first 2 ½ years of life.
Most children are born without a
single tooth. Can bacteria passed to
children without teeth affect their
decay potential for their whole life?
According to research the answer is
yes.
Here’s a shocker…..If you have
a history of poor oral health,
including many fillings in your
mouth, you are much more likely
to transfer these harmful bacteria to
children. How? Typically, this takes
place through common parental or
caregiver behaviors such as sharing
utensils or cleaning a baby’s pacifier
with your own saliva.
Prevention starts as early as 6
months into a pregnancy. Research
shows that expectant mothers
Whether you’re living on just
Social Security or have additional
income, it never hurts to save
every dollar you can. There are
many ways to do that.
-- If you have pets, look into
buying their food from online
pet stores. Often you’ll get free
shipping above a certain purchase
amount or a considerable discount
the first time you buy. Order
enough to make it worthwhile.
-- If you’re a member of AARP,
keep an eye on its discounts.
Whether it’s restaurants, ordering
Starting at Birth - Step 1
who chewed gum containing the
sweetener xylitol are much less
likely to have decay-causing bacteria
in their saliva. So, take-home point
number one, it is essential for
expectant parents and caregivers to
keep their own mouths healthy. If
you reduce the bacterial levels in
your own mouth, you are not only
benefiting yourself but also that
of your unborn child. Visiting a
dentist regularly, even more often
when you are pregnant, improving
your homecare, and using products
that specifically reduce bacteria are
all essential.
Your baby is born; now what?
First, eliminate potential ways of
transferring saliva to your baby. Do
not share utensils or let grandma
or grandpa lick a cloth to clean
around a baby’s mouth. Wiping
your baby’s gums with a clean cloth
after meals is also good practice to
help reduce bacterial levels.
Once a child starts getting teeth,
diet plays a significantly greater
role. Minimizing snacks and
drinks with fermentable sugars
is key. This starts with the bottle.
Bottle syndrome, also known as
baby bottle tooth decay, occurs
when teeth become exposed, at
length and frequently, to liquids
containing a form of sugar. All
liquids that contain sugar can cause
bottle syndrome, including breast
and cow’s milk (which contain the
sugar lactose), formula, fruit juice
(which contains the sugar fructose),
Senior Scene
Pinching Pennies
pizza, traveling or buying new
reading glasses, AARP might
have a discount. Be sure to carry
your card.
-- If you have a tablet or
computer, look into getting your
newspaper online. You could save
as much as two-thirds the cost of
your subscription.
-- Keep up with the
maintenance on your vehicle. Put
oil changes on your calendar and
get them done, as well as having
tires checked and rotated. You’ll
save money in the long run.
-- Check your local paper for
free community events such
as concerts in the park, library
events with free movies or author
readings, museum free days and
street art shows.
soda and other sweetened drinks. It
is caused by the constant presence
of milk, formula, or fruit juice in
a child’s mouth during the night,
during breastfeeding, during naps,
or for extended periods during the
day. The liquid pools around the
teeth and gums, providing food for
the bacteria in plaque. The bacteria
produce acid as a byproduct when
they consume the sugar. This acid
attacks your child’s teeth and causes
decay.
When your child feels
comfortable with a toothbrush,
brush their teeth and gums twice a
day with an extra-soft toothbrush.
Use a pea-sized amount of
toothpaste without fluoride until
your child is old enough to spit. If
your child doesn’t like toothpaste,
it’s fine to brush without it.
Prevention starts before babies
are born. It starts with taking care
of your own mouth.
