New Lenox tuba player to perform at White Sox game
Mary Compton
Freelance Reporter
For the second year in a
row, Marian Catholic band
member Kyle Lavin, of New
Lenox, will perform with
others at Guaranteed Rate
Field on Saturday, Aug. 18,
during a Chicago White Sox
game.
This incoming junior who
plays the tuba will march
around the field and play
the National Anthem. New
this year is that anyone can
march behind the band if
you purchase a ticket online
at www.mlb.com/whitesox/tickets/specials#mariancatholic
“I enjoy being part of Marian
Catholic, it’s a second
home to me,” Lavin said.
Last year, Lavin and the
band performed during Star
Wars Night. The Aug. 18
performance will be during
a game against the Kansas
City Royals. The first 20,000
fans will receive a Tim Anderson
bobblehead.
“My favorite experience in
the band was waiting in the
tunnels and then we got to go
on the field for Grand Nationals
in Lucas Oil Stadium,” he
said. “I’ve been in the band
program since I was a freshman.
The work ethic you
have to perform in the band is
going to help me in the future
when I get a job.”
Following a pre-game
tailgate, Marian Catholic’s
marching band, a seven-time
Bands of America Grand
National Champion and
38-consecutive Class 3A
State Champion, will march
into the White Sox’s stadium
with a parade of Marian
Catholic supporters marching
behind them. Any fan
that purchases a ticket from
Marian Catholic will be able
to march in the warning track
parade around the field. The
marching band will then get
the evening started by playing
the Star-Spangled Banner
from center field.
“I can’t wait to walk
around the field at Sox park,”
Lavin said. “Last year, I saw
my family waving to me
from the stands while I was
performing.”
As a gesture of community
support, a portion of each
ticket sold will be donated
back to Marian Catholic for
scholarships and financial
aid.
An added bonus, the first
1,500 fans to purchase tickets
from Marian Catholic
will receive a Marian Catholic
branded White Sox hat.
Win or lose, the night will
conclude with fireworks after
the game.
Catholic, where he goes to school. Lavin will join the band on Guaranteed Rate Field on
Saturday, Aug. 18. Mary Compton/22nd Century Media
