According to the Wilmette Police Department, an explosion and resulting fire on a 32-foot private boat occurred shortly after 8 a.m. at the Wilmette Harbor Association, 20 Harbor Drive. The deceased, Mitchell Z. Sroka, as identified by the Cook County medical examiner’s office, was pronounced dead at the scene after his body was extricated from the boat’s cabin by divers from the Wilmette and Evanston fire departments. His death was ruled an accident caused by multiple blunt force injuries from the boat explosion and drowning. Officials said Sroka owned the boat. A 74-year-old Arlington Heights man was injured in the accident. He was transported to Evanston Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and later released. The U.S. Coast Guard also responded to the accident. According to Wilmette Fire Chief Ben Wozney, the boat was attached to the fueling dock, but was not being fueled at the time of the accident. Crews arrived and put the fire out and the boat was completely submerged. “We’ll see boat fires from time to time, but an actual boat explosion is something I never remember happening down there,” Wozney said. Investigators, including members of the Wilmette Police Department, Wilmette Fire Department and U.S. Coast Guard, survey the scene where a 67-year-old Arlington Heights man was killed in a boat explosion at around 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at Wilmette Harbor in Wilmette. Eric DeGrechie/22nd Century Media He added that the boat wasn’t completely razed until around 8:30 p.m. Saturday night. “The explosion was so strong that the top of the boat where it meets the rail line came up far enough out of the water that it turned upside down and landed upside down on the bottom part of the boat,” Wozney said. “So, that was quite a force.” Kate Bradley Schmitt, of Wilmette, was running along the Linden Avenue side of the Baha’i Temple with her 3-yearold son when she heard a loud explosion. “There were flames and black smoke coming from the boat remnants in the water. We saw a few fire trucks and ambulances arrive on the scene almost immediately and the fire extinguished with fire extinguishers and hoses,” said Schmitt, who took one of the photos that appears on this week’s cover of The Beacon. The investigation of the incident was turned over to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, who handles watercraft incidents of this nature.
