10 | August 16, 2018 | The winnetka Current NEWS winnetkacurrent.com THE Wilmette beacon 1 dead, 1 injured following Wilmette Harbor boat explosion A 67-year-old Arlington Heights man was killed around 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at Wilmette Harbor in Wilmette. According to the Wilmette Police Department, an explosion and resulting fire on a 32-foot private boat occurred shortly after 8 a.m. at the Wilmette Harbor Association, 20 Harbor Drive. The deceased, Mitchell Z. Sroka, as idenitfied by the Cook County medical examiner’s office, was pronounced dead at the scene after his body was extricated by divers from the Wilmette and Evanstion fire departments. According to police, Sroka appeared to have died from injuries received in the explosion, however, cause of death is pending examination by the Cook County Medical Examiner. As of press time, the exam was not complete. A 74-year-old Arlington Heights man was injured in the accident. He was transported to Evanston Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The U.S. Coast Guard also responded. According to officials, the boat was attached to the fueling dock, but was not being fueled at the time of the accident. Crews arrived and put the fire out and the boat was completely submerged. “It was not like a firework sound, but like a descending weight fell somewhere,” said Celine Drwiega, who lives nearby. “It wasn’t too long and drawn out. THE GLENCOE ANCHOR Major parking, traffic changes coming to Takiff Center After a successful project last summer added dozens of much-needed parking spots at the Takiff Center in Glencoe, construction crews returned on Monday, Aug. 13, the start the second phase of the project. Phase I added 64 parking spaces in the lot, as well as new bike racks a traffic roundabout, said Erin Maassen, Glencoe Park District spokeswoman. “We were very short of parking, so adding 64 more spaces has helped tremendously” over the past year, Maassen said. Each day, nearly 1,000 people visit the Takiff Center on Green Bay Road to use its gym, fitness and daycare facilities and to participate in dance programs, karate, art classes, and summer camps. The goal of Phase II is to redirect how traffic flows through the lot and improve accessibility for pedestrians and people with disabilities. Crews will be flattening out the slope of the lot to make it easier to use for people with disabilities, part of a Glencoe-wide initiative to make its buildings and resources more accessible, Maassen said. “We have a lot of users of all abilities, and we want everyone to have access to the community center,” Maassen said. THE NORTHBROOK TOWER Youth sports facility a step closer to Northbrook Court opening In an era of online shopping and digital entertainment, Northbrook entrepreneur Dan Tuchman believes he can help save struggling brick-andmortar retail malls in the North Shore and across the country. Tuchman is seeking permission from the village to open a Hi-Five Sports Zone inside Northbrook Court shopping mall. His rezoning request was unanimously approved by the Northbrook Plan Commission at its Tuesday, Aug. 7 meeting, and now awaits final approval from the village’s board of trustees. Founded in 1990 by Tuchman’s father, Marv, Hi-Five Sports is a do-it-all youth recreation franchise that runs sports classes, camps and leagues, afterschool programs and special events for children ages 3 to 10, with some programs also on offer for preteens. Hi-Five Sports has proven wildly popular in the past three decades, growing from the North Shore to locations in 20 cities. But Tuchman will launch the company’s next evolution — and a potentially revolutionary idea for retail centers — in his hometown this winter if the Northbrook Board of Trustees grants his request for zoning changes at its next meeting Tuesday, Aug. 14. Risk of West Nile reaches highest level since 2012 Submitted by North Shore Mosquito Abatement District North Shore Mosquito Abatement District surveillance indicates the risk from West Nile virus at this time is at the highest levels since the 2012 outbreak, when 290 Illinoisans, 174 in Cook County, became ill. The WNV infection rate in mosquitoes collected in district traps during the past week has increased significantly. “We are seeing amplified levels of West Nile virus in mosquitoes,” said Mark Clifton, director of the NSMAD. “The amount of virus we are detecting in mosquitoes is well above the historical average for this time of year and is also occurring earlier in the season than the average. These factors indicate that the risk for human West Nile virus infections is elevated and will likely remain elevated through the remainder of August. In response to the increase in WNV activity, the NSMAD is increasing adult mosquito control operations throughout the District to augment continued larval mosquito control. West Nile virus is transmitted to humans via the bite of an infected Culex pipiens mosquito. Most people infected with the virus show no symptoms. Mild cases may cause a slight fever or headache. More severe infections are marked by a rapid onset of a high fever with head and body aches, disorientation, tremors, convulsions and, in the most severe cases, paralysis or death. Symptoms typically occur within three to 14 days after the bite from an infected mosquito. Persons 50 years of age or older are at the highest risk for serious illness. The NSMAD recommends that residents take personal protection measures to minimize mosquito bites including: using insect repellent, wearing loose fitting clothing and avoiding peak mosquito feeding times during the hours around dawn and dusk. Residents are urged to examine their property and eliminate any items that can hold water, particularly smaller items that may be easily overlooked. If it can hold water, it can breed mosquitoes. The success of Winnetka’s Geno Benvenuti’s business, Benvenuti and Stein Inc., vouches for his 41 years of quality workmanship. His firm has a long history of designing and building custom cabinetry, new homes, creating custom cabinetry and remodeling houses, many of which are on the North Shore. “I could not think of doing anything else,” Benvenuti said. “I have been in business continuously.” That urge to create and build something began shortly after Benvenuti graduated from college. “I grew up in Wilmette, started working in construction, learned carpentry skills and worked with a designer,” he said. “That set me in motion to do more.” Jeff Stein and Benvenuti opened their own design and building business in 1977. He bought out Stein in 1981 and has had his own firm ever since. “I went to night school at Chicago’s Harrington School of Design to learn more about design and then took classes at Oakton Community College to further my knowledge of architecture,” Benvenuti said. He learned the subtle, yet quality ways of building new and making improvements in older structures. All of his cabinets have miter-fold corners. He uses only the best grades of materials. Benvenuti’s eagerness to be creative, while adhering to quality workmanship has paid off. His reputation grew as the remodeling bubble of the 1980s became more robust.` “Remodeling took off in the 1980s,” he said. “The inventory of homes was from a different era. Houses were much smaller and not adequate for growing families. Owners wanted family rooms and bigger kitchens.” Benvenuti obliged by doing what has since set him apart from most other designers and builders and contributed to his business success. “We do the complete job for our customers from start to finish,” Benvenuti said. “We are there for the entire project, no handing it off to someone else. He added sometimes, a customer will go away for the summer or an extended period of time. “We take over, send photos of the project throughout the process, get the customer’s approval,” Benvenuti said. “We do it all from concept to completion including maid service at the end of a job. They come home to a sparkling, clean environment.” His most favorite projects focus on interior work and remodeling kitchens.
