In Memoriam
William Wallace Fox
New Trier graduate
William Wallace Fox, 93,
died Aug. 5 of dementia.
He was the beloved husband
of Nancy Brocksbank
Fox. He is predeceased
by his parents Mr.
& Mrs. W. W. Fox Sr.,
his brothers John and Edward,
his daughter Barbara
Fox McBriarty, stepson
Sgt. John A. Phillips,
Jr. USMC, as well as his
ex-wife Mary Ann Janda
Fox. He leaves his wife
Nancy, his sister Elizabeth
Fox Hall, his son William
W. Fox, Jr. (Suzanne
Lockett), his daughter Susan
Fox-Albertine (Paul),
stepchildren Victoria
Phillips, Harold T. Phillips
(Aimee), Elizabeth P.
Moy (Steven); and grandchildren
Charlie, Jake,
Liza, Catherine, Edward,
Victoria, Ella, Paul, Mary
and Justin.
Having survived climbing
the steeple of the First
Congregational Church
in Winnetka with his
precarious brothers, Fox
graduated from New Trier
High School in 1943. He
graduated from Knox College
in 1949 with a degree
in Chemistry. He served
in the US Army as a scrub
nurse during World War
II and served in the intelligence
community during
the Korean War. He
served as past commander
of the Wilmette American
Legion, was a member of
the American Legion for
66 years. Fox was an Eagle
Scout, and shared his
passion for the organization
by being a Boy Scout
leader in Wilmette for
several years. He had a
distinguished career in the
oil industry with Chevron
and Pure Oil.
His passion was sailing.
He was a member of the
Chicago Yacht Club since
1954. He raced in over
12 Chicago to Mackinac
sailboat races. This race
is the oldest annual freshwater
distance race in
the world. He was also a
member of the Old Guard.
Fox was the chairman of
the sailing school there
for more than 20 years.
When he took over as
chairman of the sailing
school, there were only 40
children enrolled. He and
his team grew the sailing
school to over 200 children,
which included two
traveling race teams: the
New Trier sailing team,
and the Opti sailing team.
Under his chairmanship,
the yacht club was given
the Joe Prosser Award for
being the best youth sailing
school in the country.
Several years ago,
the Chicago Yacht Club
named a sailing school
award after him. The William
Fox Sr. Trophy is
given at the sailing school
awards dinner at the end
of the summer to the most
improved female sailor.
Fox was a lifelong Cubs
fan. He played third base
in semi-pro baseball and
always kept score the “old
way,” even into his nineties.
He last attended a
Cubs game after his 90th
birthday. Fox danced a
nasty jitterbug. He and
Nancy were members
of the Town Club in Kenilworth
for many years.
He had a wonderful dry
wit and sweet kind way,
and was known for the
occasional skinny dip
at Wilmette beach well
into his 70’s. He will be
missed by all who knew
him.
Services will be held
at the First Presbyterian
Church in Wilmette, 600
9th Street, Wilmette, IL
60091, at 11:00 a.m., Aug.
25. Handicapped accessibility
to the church is in
doubt at this time.
In lieu of flowers the
family would prefer that
a donation be made to
the Chicago Yacht Club
Foundation. Please specify
the Barb Fox Sailing
Scholarship Fund.
Nelson Shaw
Nelson Shaw died at his
Winnetka home July 26,
holding the hand of Judy,
his beloved wife of 58
years. Born April 28, 1930
in Belleview, N.J., Shaw
was beginning a career in
insurance when he was offered
a full scholarship to
Rutgers University. After
graduating Magna Cum
Laude and earning multiple
awards, he entered
Harvard University, where
he was Social Chairman
of the Graduate Business
School and played on the
intramural basketball and
softball teams. In 1953,
immediately after earning
his MBA, Shaw became
a commissioned Naval
officer, serving on the
Destroyer U.S.S. Willard
Keith for two years in the
Pacific during the Korean
War. After honorable discharge,
he began his career
in Chicago working
for Jewel Companies, Inc.
from 1957-67, serving as
their last head of manufacturing.
During that
time, he met and married
the love of his life, settled
in Winnetka, and had
three children. When Jewel
restructured in 1967, he
reinvented himself, learning
the brokerage business
at Bacon, Whipple
& Co., where he worked
for 15 years, becoming a
partner. In 1982, the company
merged with Stifel,
Nicolaus & Co., Inc., and
Shaw was appointed senior
vice president. He
was a top performer, attending
the Chairman’s
Council meetings for 32
years. He secured the financial
futures of many
clients including the Arch
Diocese of St. Louis and
the Sisters of Perpetual
Adoration in Lacrosse,
WI. He lived to work,
and reluctantly retired at
the age of 84. Shaw was
an avid golfer and loved
spending weekends on the
Glen View Club course.
In the winter, he and Judy
curled at the Glen View
and Indian Hill Clubs.
He was an expert Curling
Skip and strategic competitor,
winning dozens of
Bonspiels. He was a gentle
giant at 6-feet-6 inches
and was a lovely, peaceful
man. He will be greatly
missed. Preceded in death
by his parents, Helen
Gertrude Shaw (nee Nelson)
and James Kennedy
Shaw, Brother Robert
Shaw, and son Nelson Edward
Shaw (Ted), Shaw is
survived by his wife Judy
(nee Kochs), children
Jim Shaw (Veronica) and
Kathy Kirrish (Greg), and
seven grandchildren: Eric
Shaw, Megan Shaw, Nicole
Shaw, Anthony Kirrish,
Eden Kirrish, Kaitlyn
Shaw and Rebecca Shaw.
The family would like to
express their deep gratitude
to Nelson’s wonderful
caregivers Francisco,
Gabriel and Anna, who
enabled him to be in the
comfort of his home for
the past three-and-a-half
years. A memorial service
will be held at 4 p.m. Aug.
18 at Christ Church, 784
Sheridan Road at Humboldt,
Winnetka, IL 60093
A reception will follow
at Glen View Club, Golf,
