This year’s theme is titled ‘Find Your Treasure’ with a range of activities including a Book Week costume parties. These local events are hosted by the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) which brings children, authors together illustrators and children together to celebrate a love of books. Ermington Library is celebrating with the Paint Parra Read project which includes story reading, singing and rhyming along with Redsee the Readasaurus for littlies from birth to 5 years. Epping Library is having a special Book Week Story Time session with stories, songs, and craft on Friday, August 24 , while staff at Carlingford Library have put together a treasure themed trivia challenge about characters, authors, subjects, places and more. As part of the Book Week celebrations in Epping , City of Parramatta Lord Mayor, Cr Andrew Wilson today met the winners of the local bookmark design competition where six children aged between five and 12 years received a book pack for their winning entries, which have been turned into bookmarks. “Congratulations to the winners and it’s good to see some of the fine messages that children are coming up with to promote reading,” Lord Mayor Wilson said. Wednesday 22 August, 2018 THE WEEKLY TIMES 9 Ryde to honour General John Monash TWT on-the-spot PHOTO WORLD WAR ONE Australian General Sir John Monash, GCMG, KCB, VD ill be honoured with a plaque proposed for Monash Park in Ryde. The plaque was proposed by Clr Roy Maggio and Clr Dr Peter Kim with support from local historian Steve Lucas alongside Ryde’s Returned and Services League stalwart Bernie Cox to commemorate the July, 1918 Battle of Hamel in Northern France which was planned and led by General Monash. “I hope this plaque will not only honour the legacy of General Monash but will also explain the achievements of General Monash,” Mr Cox said. Steve Lucas said the plaque would teach children and future generations about the famous General. “In Ryde we have 22 streets with World War One connections and more than 2,000 people from Ryde served in World War One, “ he said. “Yet people don’t know anything about General Monash who was a nation builder and one of the first Australian soldiers to land at Gallipoli. “He is one of Australia’s greatest men and we should erect at statue of him, not just a plaque.” For Clr Roy Maggio, the plaque is about recognition of the area’s identity. “Monash Park was once a suburb called Monash Park, with post office called Monash Park and has always been a prestigious place to live,” Clr Maggio said. “The history of a place, like Monash Park, is an important part of the identity of a place and this plaque not only honours General Monash it recognises the history of Monash Park.” Monash Park has one memorial – a stone obelisk from the Edwardian era to commemorate the first Gladesville trams – but this memorial had been moved to the park from the Gladesville shopping precinct. Mr Cox and The Weekly Times were presented with a City of Ryde Event Of The Year Award in partnership with Meadowbank Public School for the 1915-2015 commemoration of the Centenary of Gallipoli. The park will have a plaque to honour World War One General Sir John Monash. 3 BEDROOM APARTMENTS AVAILABLE NOW Local students make news at Gladesville’s Radio 2RRR FIRST YEAR media students from Macquarie University had a first hand opportunity to learn about broadcast journalism when they visited local radio station 2RRR in Gladesville on Friday. The students got to record messages for Lewis Beere’s regular program and discovered how to create the program. “It was a fantastic opportunity to teach these students every aspect of radio broadcasting from mixing, to sound levels to music presentation and the challenges of live broadcasting,” Lewis Beere said. “It was also a pleasure to work with these students from Macquarie University, where I used to be a teacher. “I hope they’ll leave with a greater appreciation of the work we do, behind the scenes, to create a radio program, as well as the diversity of the many programs presented on Radio 2RRR.” Student Marie Boulgugouris described the experience as fascinating, thought provoking and fun. “This opportunity was a real privilege for us and a gave us a tremendous insight into a working radio program, particularly the technical side of creating a program.” Sofia Dmitrieva agreed. “I didn’t know how to mix audio until Father’s Day Mass Field of Mars Cemetery REMEMBERING THOSE WE LOVE Please join us for a Father’s Day Memorial Mass Field of Mars Cemetery Saturday, 1 September 2018, 10.30am Singer/Musician: Eileen McCann Friday and what needs to be done to create a radio program,” Sofia said. “We appreciate the time and enthusiasm shown to us by Lewis Beere and the team at 2RRR and it was a lot of fun for us to record ourselves to be played on a program that will be broadcast.” Radio 2RRR broadcaster Lewis Beere demonstrates the art of broadcast journalist to Rowena McGeoch, Patricia Teano, Celine Nalbandian, Marie Boulgugouris, Sarah Saud and Sofia Dmitrieva on Friday.
