With that, and considering we’re not always in a place to know what’s going on when it happens, it’s also important to have strong relationships with our readers that live in these areas. This was clearly the case on the evening of Monday, Letter to the Editor Over-development of Langdon not needed As a nearby neighbor and frequent user of Langdon Park and Beach, I am deeply disturbed by the Park District’s likely overdevelopment of, and accompanying drastic change in character, of the park. In addition to a needed update to the tot lot, also included is a proposal that would nearly double the amount of paved area by developing the NE and SE corners of the Park. Also, the tot lot will be blanketed in rubber or synthetic grass. This over-development would drastically change the nature of the Park, removing most of the green space and turning it into an urban Aug. 13. Wilmette resident Mark Weyermuller has always been a friend to The Beacon. He tipped me off Monday night about increased police activity in neighboring Winnetka. His son, Trent, was in the area and got some photos and video as the police SWAT teams searched for alleged murderer John Gately III (see story on Page 6). Soon after the tip, I, along with colleagues Megan Bernard, editor of The Winnetka Current, and Joe Coughlin, 22CM publisher, were looking into exactly what was going on. We sent frequent updates to the story out on social media, warning residents to be careful in the area as advised by Winnetka and Northfield police. The story continued to grow as the week went on with all involved being longtime North Shore style recreational facility. This is a massive change, of which local residents have not been adequately informed. The park already has a tot lot, and other amenities, but also a nice green belt. The Board now wants to develop that last remaining open green space? Good governance requires that this change, over-development, and urbanization be completely disclosed to nearby residents. This has not been done. I ask that the Park District shelve these plans until they have made intensive efforts to inform local residents and solicit approval. I ask residents to contact the Park Board residents. We’ll continue following future developments. The story came on the heels of a tragic event in Wilmette on Aug. 11 when an Arlington Heights man was killed at Wilmette Harbor following a boat explosion. This was another event where people reached out to me and I was able to make my way to the harbor to cover the story. Thanks so much for reading The Beacon each week. Tom Sparks Wilmette resident jacoby From Page 14 Meanwhile, the project led to a crisis for the Rufus Jordan family. In 1885, Rufus and Ellen Jordan emigrated from England and settled in Wilmette. In 1893, they lived on Henry Street (now Ninth Street) between Lake and Central avenues with their three children (two boys and an infant daughter) and a boarder, George Millbank. George was employed by one of the construction contractors as a special policeman. On March 7, Ellen and George disappeared. It quickly became apparent that their disappearances weren’t coincidental: Ellen had cashed out some family assets, packed her clothes, sent two large satchels to the train depot, and arranged for a neighborhood girl to care for the baby. George had left his police uniform on site with a note to return it to one of the Village Trustees. Villagers, scandalized by the affair, knowingly recalled observing the pair socializing together at various events. Chicago newspapers reported the “elopement” extensively but never reported the outcome. Here’s what I know: Years later, Rufus and Ellen were living in Wilmette (505 Maple Ave.) with four more kids (and a new male boarder). George was long gone.
