Wilmette Unit 46, help veterans when they return from
serving. Alexa Burnell/22nd Century Media
When it comes to providing
unwavering support
for local veterans, no one
is more invested in their
job than Women of the
American Legion Auxiliary
Huerter-Wilmette Unit
46.
This group of kind,
compassionate and patriotic
women make it their
mission to see that when
a soldier returns from the
darkness of war, there will
be light and safer ground
awaiting them.
Susan Pinkowski, Mary
Meneghello and JoAnne
Peters, sisters, born and
raised in Wilmette, have
committed themselves to
the Auxiliary for most of
their lives. Their father,
uncle, brother and spouses
have all served the country,
knowing all too well
the difficulties a Veteran
may face upon returning
home.
“When our uncle returned
from Vietnam, he
was viewed as part of the
problem, not a hero who
went to serve. As he made
his way back on to U.S.
territory, American citizens
spit at him, scolding
him for his involvement in
the war,” Peters said.
“Can you imagine what
it is like to put your life on
the line and then be dismissed,
even hated? Let
us make it clear, members
of the Auxiliary do not
support War, but we absolutely,
without a doubt,
support the men and women
harms way, so that the rest
of us may live safely and
freely.”
While the women agree
that veterans are treated
with more respect in current
times, and that the
government does assist
with medical care and access
to VA Hospitals, true
support is still lacking.
Veterans do not receive
funds for basic needs such
as clothing, personal hygiene
products like toothpaste,
soaps, razors, and
more; this is where the
Auxiliary steps in.
The Auxiliary supports
veterans at three local
VA Hospitals — Captain
James Lovell Health Care
Center of North Chicago,
Hines VA Hospital and
Jessie Brown VA Hospital
of Chicago — relying on
donations and fundraising
to help get Veterans back
on their feet.
“It’s a lot harder for a
Veteran who is returning
from the battlefield to go
get a job without toothpaste,
soap, shoes or decent
clothing,” Pinkowski
said. “They have just
witnessed tragedies that
most of us can’t fathom.
Knowing there are people
out there who will support
them and help them
get back on their feet is
the best thing we can do
to help, while preventing
alcoholism, drug abuse or
homelessness which also
plagues this population.”
Meneghello adds, “If
local families have it in
their hearts to donate new
socks, shoes, pants, shirts
or personal care items like
soaps and shampoos, we
would be so grateful. I’m
happy to go to the home of
any Wilmette resident and
pick-up the items myself
— that is how important
these donations are.“
