Students to collect school
supplies for homeless youth
Submitted by Student
Alliance for Homeless
Youth
New Trier, Maine South
and Loyola Academy high
school students, who are
members of the Student
Alliance for Homeless
Youth, will collect school
supplies for children living
in Chicago-area shelters
from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
Sunday, Aug. 26, at Office
Depot, 2722 Green Bay
Road, Evanston.
The purpose of the supply
drive is to help reduce
barriers to education for
homeless and impoverished
youth. The group collects
school supplies from
the public to benefit Chicago
Hopes for Kids, a tutoring
program that serves
children living in nine shelters
located in the Chicago
area. This is the seventh
year the student group has
provided school supplies
for students in need.
Chicago Public Schools
served 17,894 homeless
students in the 2017-18
school year. In addition
to the school-supply project,
the Student Alliance
for Homeless Youth raises
money each year for college
scholarships provided
through the Chicago Coalition
for the Homeless,
as well as summer enrichment
tutoring programs.
Members of the Student
Alliance for Homeless
Youth are students at local
high schools, including
Maine South High School,
New Trier High School
and Loyola Academy. The
students work together to
serve homeless youth in
the greater Chicago Metropolitan
area.
The group is a 501 (c)
(3) not-for-profit corporation
founded in 2010 and
was inspired by the belief
that all children have a
right to shelter, food, education
and freedom from
abuse and exploitation.
