What’s the best part about being a New Trier athlete? Playing in front of my peers and my friends. Do you have any superstitions before, during or after a game? Before every game for football and lacrosse, I usually listen to music and right before I go onto the field, I pray. If you could play any other sport, what would it be and why? Hockey because I like the hitting. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why? Japan so I could ski there. Japan apparently has really good powder for skiing. What’s been your favorite moment at New Trier? Playing football for three years and having a fourth year to play it. It’s my favorite sport. What’s the biggest difference between playing football and lacrosse? With football ... there’s 11 guys on the field; you have to work with everyone on the field. Everybody is working with everyone at the same time, but with lacrosse it’s separate because there’s defense, middies and attack. You only work with two other people in lacrosse but with football you work with 10 other guys. What’s one item on your bucket list? I would like to say Michael Vick, but I’ve noticed it’s more of a Baker Mayfield, Johnny Manziel situation. What’s one thing people don’t know about you? I really like to draw. I find that it relaxes me. I started drawing because my twin brother was really good at it and I’ve loved it ever since. What’s the best part about playing football? The friends you make. Automatically I’ve got 90 friends because I’m on the New Trier football team. Everyone is so friendly and wants to win games. Nobody is really negative. Interview by Sports Editor Michael Wojtychiw
winnetkacurrent.com Football Preview Guide 2018 the winnetka current | August 23, 2018 | 29 Giants move step-bystep into 2018 season Brittany Kapa Contributing Sports Editor David Lindquist expects his Giants to get better every day. That’s the mantra Highland Park High School’s first-year head coach repeats to his team on and off the field. The Giants saw both success and loss in the 2017 season. They finished 5-5 and overcame a three-game losing streak early in the season to tie for the conference championship. After making it to playoffs, the Giants lost their first game against St. Charles North in the IHSA Class 7A playoffs. Lindquist spent the summer preparing his team the best way he knew how for the upcoming nine-week regular season. Hard work mixed with positivity was the name of the game and those traits will be keys for the Giants to navigate and attack the ups and downs of the 2018 season. Lindquist, who was an assistant coach for years prior to his promotion, intentionally incorporated chaos into practices this summer but for a good cause. “We try and put them through moments of chaos where they feel like physically, and mentally, everything might be shutting down or going wrong and they have to learn how to fix it,” he said. The goal is to create a team that can overcome the bad plays and celebrate and move on to the next task. Offense The offense will showcase a team within a team and a new go-to starting quarterback. Former quarterback John Sakos was the Giants main arm last season. Michael Rooney did see some playing time in 2017, but that will dramatically increase this season. However, the Giants coaching staff is making sure that Rooney and the offense are preparing for every situation. The main focus with Rooney will be his reads, and those will be based heavily on that week’s opponent. Lindquist has confidence in his starting quarterback and knows Rooney’s confidence will increase as the season progresses. Defense Defensively, Lindquist is happy with where his team is at. His core has seasoned veterans that can effectively focus on the little things, which makes Lindquist happy. That core includes a few utility players and an NCAA Division-I commit. The combination of players should yield good results in containing opposing team’s offense. Defensive ends Jacob Bradford and Noa Morganstern are two athletic players that Lindquist sees making a big impact against tough teams. Coached right, Lindquist sees Morganstern fitting in seamlessly on the defense. Defensive tackles Kevin Kaufman and Matt Cortes are two important keys to the Giants defense as well. Lindquist will favor a six-man rotation, mainly so his players can get enough rest during the game. The goal is to have his core fly to the ball. Special Teams The Giants do have two kickers who will be vying for playing time this season. The team returns Mauer, as well as Maya Taiez, the lone female kicker in the CSL North. Chemistry key component for Scouts’ success this fall David Jaffe Freelance Reporter Having good team chemistry has made Lake Forest a consistent playoff team the last several years. That key quality is also what Scouts coach Chuck Spagnoli feels will be the difference in whether they’re once again successful. “The biggest thing is to try to create chemistry among the team, that promotes positive play,” he said. “It’s easy to say and harder to accomplish.” The Scouts hope to continue an eight-season run in the IHSA state playoffs this season. Last year, a 6-5 Scouts squad reached the second round of the Class 6A playoffs. Lake Forest returns a number of experienced players from that team but will also see new faces including one at quarterback. The Scouts lost several key players to graduation, and will expect the new senior class, and even some underclassmen, to fill holes. Offense The Scouts have veteran depth at certain offensive positions and some new faces at others. Coming into the 2018 season, the offense will have balance and the ability to tweak things based on its personnel. “We will be multiple with our formations and be able to utilize our running game and passing game pretty evenly,” Spagnoli said. Since Jack Mislinski graduated, it’s an open competition at quarterback among seniors Ryan Key losses and returns Key Losses DB Alex Moss LB, RB Bryan Ooms – 3 sacks, 23 total tackles, 94 carries for 490 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns QB Jack Mislinski – 1,459 yards, 11 touchdowns DB Chris Cavalaris - 4 interceptions, 48 total tackles LB John Deering - 69 total tackles, 3 sacks DL Spencer Yauch - 8 sacks, 30 total tackles Key Returns DL Rylie Mills – 34 total tackles, 4 sacks RB Jacob Thomas - 142 carries, 700 yards WR/QB Ryan Cekay – 747 receiving yards, 6 touchdowns, 42 catches WR Luke Nolan – 14 catches, 195 yards OL Chase Bahr – University of Pennsylvania commit Cekay, Tommy Hanson and James Swartout. Each have different strengths they’re bring to the field. Jacob Thomas, who became the starting running back midway through last season, returns at the position this year. He helped the Scouts win their final three games to make playoffs last season, including running for 153 yards to beat Zion-Benton in a must-win game. The Scouts have the most depth at receiver and on the line. If Cekay isn’t quarterback, he’ll be one of the Scouts’ top targets. Luke Nolan and Clay Burton have plenty of playing time as has tight end Crawford Bolton. Chase Bahr leads a deep offensive line that will play seven or eight consistently. Defense The Scouts graduated some great defensive players including linebackers John Deering and Bryan Ooms and defensive back Chris Cavalaris. Still, Spagnoli has experienced guys left on the line, in the secondary and at linebacker. Will Wisniewski started every game at linebacker last year and Luca Passinato and Ethan Hunt complete the linebacker corps. Ed Scheidler and Will Freeman lead the secondary. Junior defensive end Mills is the big name, though. He has already received offers from 22 schools, including the University of Georgia, Clemson University, Penn State University and the University of Alabama. Special Teams Special teams is as important to LF as any other phase of the game. There’s talent among the potential punt and kick returners with Nolan, Cekay, Thomas and junior Breck Nowik while Kai Kroeger will punt and compete for kicker along with Carter Hiam and Nolan Petzer.
