Watatic located on the MA/NH
border. Our trip starts and ends
with a moderate hike through
a beautiful northern hardwood
and hemlock forest. Mt. Watatic
is one of the prime locations
where hawk watchers monitor
the passage of migrating hawks
annually. Migrants may include
broad-winged, cooper’s, bald
eagle, American kestrel and peregrine
falcon. We will meet at the
look for and identify the ferns and
flowers that abound during the
a morning stroll through shaded
forest to look at the great variety
September 8, An Evening with Chris Smither,
8 p.m., $35
Bluesman Chris Smither will be back at the Circle
of Friends Coffeehouse to open our 29th season
on Saturday, September 8th at 8 p.m. He sports the
unmistakable sound that he has made his trademark:
fingerpicked acoustic guitar and evocative
sonic textures meshed with spare, brilliant songs,
delivered in a bone-wise, hard-won voice. Honing
a synthesis of folk and blues for more than 40
years, Chris Smither is truly an American original.
As Acoustic Guitar magazine wrote, Smither sings
about “the big things – life, love, loss – in a penetrating
and poetic yet unpretentious way.”
September 22, John Gorka with Amilia K
Spicer, 8 p.m., $30
Called “the pre-eminent male singer-songwriter
of the New Folk movement” by Rolling Stone,
John Gorka possesses a commandingly beautiful
baritone voice. His articulate guitar playing compliments
his superb lyrics on songs that are romantic,
cosmic, poetic, haunting in their imagery or hilarious.
Many well-known artists have recorded and/
or performed his songs, including Mary Chapin
Carpenter, Nanci Griffith, Mary Black and Maura
O’Connell. John has graced the stage of Austin
City Limits, Mountain Stage, etown and has appeared
on CNN. http://johngorka.com/.
The Circle of Friends Coffeehouse is a nonprofit
organization affiliated with Franklin’s First
