5th Annual Wood Duck Derby Slated for October 6<br />
Mass Audubon’s Stony Brook Wildlife<br />
Sanctuary and the Norfolk Community<br />
League (NCL) are gearing up for the 5th<br />
Annual Wood Duck Derby taking place<br />
on Saturday, October 6. During the fall<br />
tradition, wood ducks (aka rubber ducks),<br />
which have been adopted by supporters of<br />
the fundraiser, will splash into the Stony<br />
Brook Pond and race downstream towards<br />
the finish line to win great prizes for participants.<br />
The first duck to cross the finish<br />
line wins the grand prize of $750!<br />
“It is amazing to see so many people<br />
come to cheer on their ducks! It really<br />
has become an exciting and much anticipated<br />
community event for the children<br />
and adults who show up every year,”said<br />
Melissa Dugas, Committee Chair. It takes<br />
approximately 5 minutes for the ducks to<br />
race down the waterway and cross the finish<br />
line, with the crowd cheering loudly for<br />
their ducks.<br />
This annual fundraiser benefits Mass<br />
Audubon’s Stony Brook Wildlife Sanctuary<br />
and the Norfolk community. In past<br />
years, the money has gone to supporting<br />
Stony Brook’s youth and adult programs<br />
to help continue its educational mission as<br />
well as other community organizations like<br />
the Norfolk Police and Fire department,<br />
Norfolk schools and the Recreation Department.<br />
The Wood Duck Derby takes place during<br />
the Stony Brook Fall Fair, which is an<br />
annual family event held at Stony Brook.<br />
The event could not be a success without<br />
the support of generous community partners<br />
