Whether it’s the work perks, camaraderie with fellow co-workers, or a passion for the business’ product or service, there are many components that play into a company’s “cool” factor. Where we live, we’re lucky to have a ton of places that meet all the criteria above, plus more, which was the inspiration behind this month’s feature. Starting on page 28, you can read about 15 places headquartered here that anyone would be lucky to work at. Some have been around for over a century, others started small and are now internationally known, and a few have dog-friendly digs or do impressive amounts of community service. I’m pretty positive there’s a company, and office culture, that’ll strike a chord with you. And if you happen to be job hunting, word on the street is some are currently hiring! Wherever you’re at in your professional or personal journey, let this issue be a reminder that it’s never too late to flip the script and try something new. Cheers!

Birth Story
What’s the coolest company you’ve ever
worked for? For me, that question is
impossible to answer, as each place has had
its fair share of pros. From my first job as a
“sandwich artist” at Auburn’s
Maidu Market where I could
walk to work, consume all the
subs I craved, and was once
given free tickets to Coldplay
(courtesy of a loyal customer);
to a summer bartending gig
at The Westin San Diego
where I posted up poolside and mixed mai
tais for guests soaking up the sun, there
have been many monumental memories.
Even in my current role, I can’t complain.
Product samples aplenty, a laid-back work
environment, gratis granola bars, and the
ability to connect with our community
while getting to be creative are all reasons
why I’ve been here for over eight years now.
Whether it’s the work perks,
camaraderie with fellow co-workers, or a
passion for the business’ product or service,
there are many components that play into
a company’s “cool” factor. Where we live,
we’re lucky to have a ton of places that meet
all the criteria above, plus more, which was
the inspiration behind this month’s feature.
around for over a century, others started
small and are now internationally known,
and a few have dog-friendly digs or do
impressive amounts
of community service.
I’m pretty positive
there’s a company, and
office culture, that’ll
strike a chord with you.
And if you happen to
be job hunting, word on
the street is some are
currently hiring!
In other news this month, September
is National Yoga Month, which means
it’s a prime time to put all your fears or
assumptions about the practice aside (no,
you don’t have to be female, flexible, or
affluent) and give it a try. To help you get
inspired, we have “6 Off-the-Beaten-Mat
Yoga Classes” in Health & Wellness (page
18)—offerings that run the gamut from goat
yoga (yes, it’s a thing and yes, it’s available
locally) to a sculpt class that incorporates
weights and cardio to really push you to
your edge. There’s even a sidebar about a
nonprofit (Sacramento Free Yoga) whose
website lists complimentary classes around
the region. Once you sign up, turn to Swag on
page 48 for a roundup of omazing products
that’ll help you start your asana in style. As
someone dedicated to downward dogging,
I can honestly say that yoga has made
me a kinder, stronger, and more present
person—not to mention saved me from
having multiple meltdowns.
Wherever you’re at in your professional
or personal journey, let this issue be a
reminder that it’s never too late to flip the
script and try something new. Cheers!
Paul
Tomei
Paul Tomei never expected his life
to travel full circle the way it has.
He grew up in Pollock Pines but
left the area after high school
to pursue a college degree and
career in acting and directing. “I
had a passion for the stage,” Tomei explains. “I
loved being able to transform into someone else.”
Though he wound up working as an actor in Los
Angeles, he felt something was missing. “I wanted
[a job that was] more artistically fulfilling and
grounding,” he says. “In the back of my mind, I
thought teaching would be interesting,” so in his
spare time, Tomei got his credential. He originally
anticipated working overseas, but when an
opportunity to teach drama at El Dorado High
School arose, it proved an offer too good to refuse.
Twenty years later, Tomei has no
regrets about the decision. He’s back in his
hometown, happily married with one child,
and able to spend each day inspiring others
to pursue their dreams. His students learn
key life skills, such as communication and
collaboration, and some have even gone on to
become performers or stage technicians. For
his efforts, he became the 2018 recipient of the
Normadene Carpenter Award, granted by the
El Dorado Arts Council. “I couldn’t have done
anything without the help of the families,
parents, friends, and community members
who have been there to support me through
all these years of hard work,” Tomei humbly
asserts. “This really is a great place to live.”
Inventive
Illustrator
by HEATHER L. BECKER
Growing up in Sonora, illustrator David Danz studied at ArtCenter
College of Design in Pasadena before working for several years in Marin
County and eventually settling in Placerville with his wife, Sandy, and
their four children. With Sandy’s help
marketing, Danz was able to become
a full-time illustrator. “I decided to
focus on the woodcut/linocut style,
which was only a small portion of my
portfolio, [since it] received the most
attention,” shares Danz. “[At the time],
there were only a handful of illustrators
in the country who worked in that style.” Danz has since provided his unique
style to big-name clients like Blue Moon, Chevron, PG&E, Cost Plus World
Market, and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Lawrence Wright.
HLB: HOW DO YOU BALANCE A CLIENT’S WISHES
WITH YOUR ARTISTIC EXPRESSION?
DD: As an illustrator, I’m hired for a certain look and
style—scratchboard, woodcut, wood engraving, etc.
Most of my clients have seen my work and know what
they’re looking for. There are times when assistance
is needed at the conceptual level, so I often generate
numerous rough sketches to help them visualize
different possibilities. I may
be partial to a certain idea or
direction, but the client is the boss and has the final word.
HLB: WHERE DO YOU GO WHEN NEEDING INSPIRATION?
DD: I’m inspired by imagery around me. Having an
iPhone with a camera and access to immediate digital
documentation is a wonderful thing. Whether traveling up
Highway 50, having dinner in Downtown Placerville, or just
looking out my front door, I’m drawn to the beauty that
surrounds me and how light affects [a scene].
HLB: WHAT DO YOU HOPE
VIEWERS TAKE AWAY FROM
YOUR WORK?
DD: [I hope people] feel a sense of curiosity as well as an emotional
connection. This doesn’t always apply to my illustration work, as I’m
often just documenting or revealing something, but I also love plein air
painting and have dabbled in creating watercolor landscapes over the
years. I have plans of eventually letting go of commercial illustration
and transitioning into the freedom of painting and producing imagery of
whatever I’m inspired by.
HLB: ARE THERE CHALLENGES YOU’VE
HAD TO OVERCOME?
DD: There are several obstacles I deal
with on a daily basis. The first is trying
to keep my work fresh and up to date.
When one has been working in the same
medium and style for 30 years, it’s easy to
just settle in and create artwork the same
way. Trying to expand, push boundaries,
and take chances are all things I struggle
with. Another obstacle is staying current
with marketing trends. Years ago, a young
illustrator starting out could call up a design
firm or advertising agency and easily obtain
a meeting with a creative person to show
them their portfolio; today, it’s all about
social media—if you’re good at using it, then
you’ll be successful
in marketing
your work.
4 Directions
Farm to Purpose
A
small farm in Latrobe
is helping disabled
students acquire
marketable skills that
could change their
futures. That’s no
small order. Disabled individuals are at
a disadvantage when it comes to finding
work. According to a 2018 Bureau of Labor
Statistics survey, fewer than 20 percent of
adults with disabilities were employed in
2017, in contrast to more than 65 percent
of non-disabled people who held jobs.
4 Directions Farm wants to help close
that gap. Cindy Keller and Starranne
Meyers, special education teachers who
founded Guiding Hands School in El
Creating Pathways
by LINDA HOLDERNESS
Dorado Hills, opened the 57-acre working
farm last year to teach skills that will help
disabled youth earn a living doing work
they enjoy and reap the fulfillment of
contributing to their communities.
At 4 Directions, students who may
become uneasy in restrictive classrooms
are able to flourish in open space with lots
of movement, fresh air, and natural light.
These youngsters, who face challenges
ranging from physical to developmental
to emotional, learn to care for the
farm’s alpacas and goats and tend to its
agriculture, including two new ventures:
a 4,000-square-foot lavender field and a
fledgling Christmas tree farm, which the
students helped plant (thanks to a recent
donation of evergreen saplings)
and will care for as they mature.
Along with farming, budding
entrepreneurs and craftspeople
can work in or make products
for the nonprofit’s boutique,
Soul Filled Creations, housed
at Guiding Hands. Resembling
a charming country store, the
shop is stocked with organic
soaps, sachets, lip balms,
greeting cards, T-shirts, tote
bags, and much more, all
made or decorated by students. The
children learn to manage the store, wait
on customers, run the cash register, and
even develop products. Many of the items
contain lavender, which will come from
the farm’s lavender field once it’s ready
to be harvested. The store is open to the
public from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekdays,
and all money raised supports the farm’s
projects.
The farm also operates during the
school year and invites visitors; the
interaction allows students to feel pride
in what they’ve accomplished and
develop interpersonal skills. Volunteers
and donations are welcome too, as the
organization seeks more venues to sell
the students’ wares and plans to build a
new barn.
The name 4 Directions is intended to
evoke the four directions on a weather
vane, which can point anywhere and
represent the unlimited choices these
kids should be able to make for their lives.
“When people with disabilities have jobs
and can contribute to their community,
they show others they are so much
more than their disability,” says Program
Director Quynn Meyers-Keller. “Here
we give them tasks they actually want
to be doing.” The organization’s motto
wraps it up perfectly: Everyone deserves
the chance to find direction in life.
Band of
Brothers
Coloma Greys by JERRIE BEARD
An obscure building sits on the corner of
Highway 49 and Back Street in Coloma.
Currently it houses vintage wagons, but
at one time it served as the armory
for the Coloma Greys, an independent
military company that was organized
and mustered into service on June 17,
1857. In all, the first muster roll included
four sergeants, four corporals, and 39 privates, including A.A.
VanGuelder (captain), J.B. Vanderheyden (first lieutenant), James A.
Hale (second lieutenant), and J. Spencer (third lieutenant).
Independent military companies were common throughout
California in the mid-19th century. Organized to maintain law and
order in the fledgling state, they also protected citizens against
the perceived threat of Native Americans. The oldest volunteer
company was organized in July of 1849 and dubbed the California
Guard. An accounting in 1862 published in the Sacramento Daily
Union was compiled from the “list of uniformed companies, duly
organized, with the number of rank and file as returned to the
Adjutant General's office.” It lists 71 companies throughout the
state with a total enrollment of 4,630 volunteers. The article notes
these figures were less than in previous years, as many volunteers
were being mustered in or volunteering for service in the Civil War.
Each company chose their own name. The Independent
City Guards, Sacramento Rangers, and Sutter Rifles were out of
Sacramento; the Volcano Blues and Amador Mountaineers were
found in Amador County; and the Auburn Greys, Forest Hill Guard,
and Placer County Mountaineers were located in Placer County.
The Coloma Greys were an efficient, well-officered, and
outfitted company. In 1858, D.
Norcross of Sacramento crafted
a six-by-nine-foot flag of the
finest silk for the company
featuring gold fringe tassels, a
large gilt eagle, and the words
“Coloma Greys, organized June
17th, 1857.”
The efficiency and military
skill of the company were never
fully tested, but their “fine
appearance” at celebrations
throughout the region was
noted in newspapers. At the jubilee held in honor of the laying of the
Atlantic telegraph cable in 1858, the Greys were “cordially received”
in Sacramento. “Their uniform is a handsomely fitting gray suit,
trimmed with black, gray cap, and pompon. The members of the
Company are nearly all up to the true standard of military stature
and proportion and make a fine show on parade. Their marching
and discipline reflected credit on their officers.” Later that day, the
“fine band of the Coloma Greys” led a military procession.
In 1859, the Greys participated in a military encampment of
volunteer companies near Sacramento to receive instruction in
company and battalion drills. The proceedings provided ample
entertainment for the public and an exercise in adaptability for the
participants. Overnight, strong winds, rain, and hail downed the
canvas tents and soaked the volunteers.
The closest the company ever came to combat was probably in
May 1860 during the Paiute Wars in Utah and Nevada. Depredations
by the Native Americans at Miller's Station on the Carson River
prompted a military unit to pursue them up the Truckee River
toward Pyramid Lake. The military was outnumbered and most of
the soldiers were killed. Many local militias, including the Coloma
Greys, stood ready to march. The Greys never saw action, however.
The company was ordered by Governor Downey to send their arms
and munitions to Carson Valley to equip the army. It wasn’t until
August 1861 that the state replaced those weapons.
On September 13, 1862, Coloma Greys’ Captain Vanderheyden
submitted a letter to General W. C. Kibbe making known his plans
to disband the company. There were not enough fresh recruits in
Coloma to fill the ranks, as many of the soldiers had joined the Civil
War effort.
began weekly
meetings to address
the pressures of rising
pressures. PIIB was formed from those meetings as a means to
enable their individual agencies to be more successful. Since
then, PIIB has also helped more than 250 independent insurance
agencies achieve success. “Independent by choice and united for
companies in a total of nine states, from Washington to Texas
This exceptional variety is evident in the specially selected books,
ClearBags is the number one provider
of crystal clear bags for packaging
various retail items—think food,
photographs, and everything in
between. Their first priority is to
promote, protect, and preserve
their customers’ products. The
company started by selling posters,
but after numerous customers began
purchasing the clear bags the posters
came in, instead of the posters themselves,
ClearBags was born. In the 26 years since, the company has
evolved to function around its customers, including an expansion
to Tennessee for those on the East Coast, and a custom team that
constantly comes up with new and improved packaging ideas.
Did you know? ClearBags also sells boxes, stationery, and
accessories to complete the packaging of any product, all available
at wholesale pricing. With over 6,000 products in their inventory
and ready to be shipped within one business day, it’s easy to find
packaging fit for any occasion.—AM
Innovation meets style with these sleek belt
enthusiasts, all of whom share one belief: Holes in
belts are unnecessary. In 2004, founder Brig Taylor
was teaching abroad in Moldova when a student
presented him with a simple yet ingenious gift: a belt featuring a
buckle that ratcheted into teeth-like ridges instead of a prong and
worn-out holes. Taylor sought to stylize the belt and turn it into a
mainstream marvel, but there was one caveat: ratcheting buckles
were already public domain and a patent wouldn’t be possible until
nine years later, when he improved and redesigned the buckle into
a dual-ratchet lever. (He also added a bottle opener to the belt for
good measure.) Today, the belts are shipped worldwide and offered
in utility and fashion styles, kids’ sizes, and even vegan leather.
Job perks: Full-time employees enjoy 35-hour work weeks (paid hourlong
lunches), subsidized gym memberships, chances to win money
and prizes, an open vacation policy, and a game room with ping
pong and VR. (Yes, they’re hiring—put in a good word for us?)—LA
What’s to Urgent for Urgent Care?
Healing Garden Coming Soon
SPECIAL AD SECTION

DID YOU KNOW
SPECIAL AD SECTION
What’s Too Urgent
for Urgent Care?
It’s happened to us all -- and inevitably
in the evening or middle of the night.
Your child is sick. Do you know
what to do? Should you wait it out
until morning when you can call the
pediatrician or do you rush them to
the closest Emergency Room? Here
are some guidelines from emergency physician
Michael Mirhadi, MD, of Marshall Medical Center.
Emergency Room
It’s hard to know what an emergency is and what
can wait. Here are a few indications that a trip to the
ER is necessary:
• Fainting, loss of consciousness, seizure
• Fever in a newborn
• Rapid or difficulty breathing
• Sudden dizziness, weakness or change in vision
• Change in behavior, such as confusion or
difficulty walking
• Severe or persistent vomiting or vomiting blood
• Severe or persistent diarrhea or blood in stools
• Vomiting and/or diarrhea with dry lips or mouth
and/or decreased urination
• Profuse bleeding or bleeding that won’t stop with
direct pressure after 15 minutes
• A gaping wound with edges that don’t
come together
• Problems with movement or sensation after
an injury
• A stiff neck associated with
fever or headache
• Accidents involving
pedestrians or bicycles and cars
• A red/purple rash that doesn’t
disappear when brief fingertip
pressure is applied to the skin
• A bulging or sunken fontanel
(soft spot) in infants
• Sudden severe pain anywhere
in the body
• Falls from any significant height
• Mental health concerns
Urgent Care
Urgent care is a great alternative to the ER if
your pediatrician is unavailable. If you can’t
make an appointment within a day or two for the
following symptoms, head to a nearby urgent
care center:
• Fever accompanied by cold symptoms and you
suspect it may be the flu.
• Possible ear infection; symptoms include
drainage from the ear, ear ache and pulling on
the ears.
• Sore throat with or without white patches on the
tonsils, a possible sign of strep infection.
• Possible pink eye, (red, inflamed eyes with or
without discharge).
• A few episodes of vomiting or diarrhea (without
blood in the stool) but has no belly pain or signs
of dehydration.
“Generally speaking,” says Mirhadi, “if your
child is able to walk, talk, interact and play,
chances are whatever she or he has is not
an emergency and you should make an
appointment with your pediatrician.” But trust
your gut, if you feel something can’t wait until
the next available appointment, visit urgent care
or the emergency room.
BETTER CARE FOR YOU
Hernia 101
bladder pushes through the lower abdominal wall into
the groin. There are a few other kinds, including ventral
hernias (in the abdomen) and umbilical, more common in
newborns.
How do you prevent a hernia?
There are a few things you can do to prevent a hernia:
strengthen your abdominal muscles, warm up and rest
properly before and after exercise, quit smoking, eat more fiber
and maintain a healthy weight.
How do you know you have a hernia?
The most obvious symptom of a hernia is a bulge or lump in
the affected area. If it’s an inguinal hernia, you may notice a
lump on either side of the pubic bone where the groin and
thigh meet. Hernias are most easily felt when you’re standing,
bending down or coughing.
Hernias -- Chances are you know someone who’s
had one. But what are they? How do you know
when you have one? And how are they treated?
Marshall General Surgeon Ryan Lussenden, MD,
has the answers.
What is a hernia?
The simple answer: a hernia occurs when an organ pushes through
a weak spot in the muscle or tissue that holds it in place. The most
common type is called an inguinal hernia, where the intestine or
You may also experience:
• pain or discomfort, particularly when bending over,
coughing or lifting heavy items
• weakness, pressure or a feeling of heaviness in the abdomen
• burning, gurgling or aching near the bulge
How do you treat a hernia?
While some hernias can be treated with lifestyle changes and/
or medication, if it’s causing pain or growing larger, you’ll likely
need surgery. Make an appointment with your doctor for an
evaluation and referral. Dr. Lussenden at Marshall Medical
Center offers minimally invasive, robotic hernia repair. Contact
his office to make an appointment at 530-626-3682.
Exceeding Patients’ Expectations
Let’s face it. No one wants
to be a patient in a hospital.
While grateful for the care
they receive, most people
would rather recuperate
in the quiet of their own home, in their
own comfortable bed and eating familiar
food. During a hospital stay, patients are
awoken in regular intervals by nurses and
doctors who examine them and take their
vital statistics. They eat healthy food and
have limited TV selection -- all while not
feeling well.
But when asked, Marshall patients
overwhelmingly say they had an
outstanding experience at Marshall
Hospital. How do we know? Every patient is sent a
standardized patient care survey administered by the
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
The results show that Marshall’s patients highly rate
their care experience at Marshall.
The questions range from caregiver
communication to pain management, cleanliness
and more. Based on survey results, and in
comparison with other hospitals in the nation,
Medical Center is the recipient of the Healthgrades
2018 Outstanding Patient Experience Award.
Marshall Medical Center ranked among the top 10
percent of hospitals nationwide for patient experience.
This success is based on the patients’ perception of the
care they receive, and that’s why Marshall is very proud of
this honor. Find out more at www.healthgrades.com.
COVER STORY
A Marshall Birth Story:
Birth Center Delivers
a Joyous Ending
Brooke and Justin enjoy making their daughter, Blair, laugh.
Two weeks before Brooke Simmons and
her husband, Justin, had their beautiful
baby girl Blair, they were living in
Oklahoma, carefully preparing a detailed
birth plan. But the perfect job opportunity
opened up here in California, so they
packed up and moved back to Brooke’s
home town of Placerville. “While I was excited to move
back to California, I knew I had to move quickly to switch
obstetricians and find a new hospital and pediatrician.”
SPECIAL AD SECTION
Marshall Medical Center was able to provide everything
Brooke needed for the delivery and care of her baby.
Obstetrician Ken Nelson, MD, who delivered Brooke many
years ago, was a caring and reassuring presence, giving
Brooke respect, warmth and expert advice while reviewing
her birth plan.
Brooke and Blair with Birth Center staff members:
Mary Ann Gulutz, RN, Director; Katie Olivier, RN and Kenneth Nelson, MD
4 | FOR YOUR HEALTH | www.marshallmedical.org

well as doctors and nurses from various
specialties throughout the hospital.
Marshall has an operating room
located right in the birth center, so
Brooke was able to get into surgery
quickly. During her surgery, the
nursing staff was able to give Justin
regular updates on her progress
and assure him that he was doing
everything caring for their brand
new baby.
Brooke, Justin, and Blair are joined by Brooke’s sister, Brie Mattson and their mom, Wendy Thomas.
During Brooke’s second appointment
with Dr. Nelson, she was sent directly
to Marshall Hospital with what was
thought to be preeclampsia. As it
turned out, Brooke had gone into
labor. “I was warmly welcomed at the
Birth Center and received amazing
care. Each nurse
played a unique and
critical role in my
birth experience and
was very respectful of
my birth plan.”
Weeks after her
delivery, Brooke was
still able to recall her
nurses’ contributions.
“Katie helped me feel
comfortable, bringing
humor to lighten
the mood. Danielle’s extensive
background provided helpful insights
into questions and concerns, while
advocating for my needs throughout
my time at Marshall. Deanna’s kind
and gentle nature was a welcomed
presence in the night routine, and
Lindsey’s creativity and intuition
helped turn the tide in the middle of a
difficult birth by offering suggestions
and techniques that made a vaginal
birth possible, something that I
desired. Lindsey’s knowledgeable
Everyone
at the Birth
Center was
committed
to my birth
plan
assistance with breast feeding also
made that process successful and
unintimidating.”
“Everyone at the Birth Center was
committed to my birth plan and, while
we had to make some compromises,
they all helped
make it a reality. My
goal was to have a
natural birth and
that’s exactly what
happened.”
Unfortunately,
Brooke’s experience
didn’t end there. Her
labor was difficult
and prolonged. After
32 hours in labor
and roughly four and
half hours of active
pushing, their beautiful daughter
was born.
But then the situation took a turn
for the worse. Brooke began to
hemorrhage, and Michele Cherry, MD,
quickly and skillfully reacted to the
critical condition. Brooke was rushed
to the operating room and all hands
were on deck.
The team that assembled included
Craig Thayer, MD, Chief of Surgery, as
“I’m convinced that had it been
another time or in another hospital,
the results may very well have
been quite different,” said Brooke.
“However, due to the expert care
from Dr. Cherry and from all the
departments of Marshall Medical
Center that day, I got the care I
needed and today we have our
healthy, beautiful daughter.”
Cancer Center
Healing Garden
SPECIAL AD SECTION
It will be a place to heal, to breathe, to lose
all thought and to just be in the moment. The
proposed new healing garden at the Marshall
Cancer Center will provide patients, family, staff
and community an opportunity to utilize nature’s
health giving and therapeutic power.
The proposed garden will provide a safe and comforting
place with covered areas to sit in the shade and open
areas to take in the sun and wide walking paths allow for
easy navigation on a garden stroll.
The healing garden will be located in Cameron Park,
adjacent to the Cancer Center and dedicated to the
memory of Janet Nachtman, the wife of former Marshall
Medical Center CEO, Frank Nachtman. Years ago, Janet
fought valiantly against cancer. “It is because of her vision
and passion to find a better pathway that the Cancer
Center exists today,” says Judie Stewart, Janet’s close
friend and chair of the healing garden campaign. Janet
was an exceptional artist and brilliant gardener; she was
compassionate and concerned about improving the
journey of all cancer patients.
Research has shown that introducing nature into
healthcare has a profound impact on those who
experience it. Pain and stress decrease, and the overall
emotional state improves. Healthcare is not confined to
the walls of a building. Healing also occurs outside in
nature. “This serene environment will allow patients time
and space to heal spiritually, mentally and physically in
a way that cannot be quantified,” adds Wendy Goossen,
Director of the Cancer Resource Center.
Planned to open in 2019, fundraising for the Janet
Nachtman Healing Garden is ongoing. For more
information on how you may positively impact lives
through the Cancer Healing Garden, please contact Mr.
Jamie Johnson, Executive Director, Marshall Foundation
for Community Health, at 530-642-9984 or jjohnson1@
Last May, the Marshall Foundation
for Community Health said
goodbye to long-time CEO/
Executive Director Karen Good.
We wish her well on her new
her successor, Jamie Johnson.
Jamie is relocating to California
DINING SPOTLIGHT
Bricks Eats and Drinks
A Main Street Mainstay
by SHARON PENNY // photos by DANTE FONTANA
If you’re looking for a friendly, unpretentious dining destination with
local brews and good eats, look no further than the aptly named Bricks.
Inside, you’ll find a brightly lit, welcoming bar and dining room
that’s decorated with huge, vibrant photos of Placerville’s Main
Street (shot by local photographers Scott and Sharon Benton) and
walls constructed almost entirely of, you guessed it, bricks. The
staff is smiley and attentive, and with big picture windows looking onto
historic downtown, it’s the primo place for drinks, a casual meet and
greet, or a substantial meal.
I stopped by on a Saturday for a late lunch and found the place
positively jumping. To my palate’s pleasant surprise, five out of the day’s
10 taps were dedicated to local El Dorado County and Sacramento-area
breweries like Mraz, Knee Deep, Crooked Lane, and Track 7.
For starters, I ordered the fried green tomatoes—slices of pankocrusted,
garden-fresh tomatoes that were deep-fried until golden and
served on a bed of creamy grits. Topped with tomatillo salsa and crème
fraîche, it was a taste-bud explosion and set the bar high for the food
that followed.
An order of fish and chips came next; much to my delight, Bricks’
version featured a hearty helping of four, perfectly beer-battered fillets
atop a pile of crispy, still-hot fries, plus the obligatory accompaniments:
tartar sauce, malt vinegar, and paprika-sprinkled lemon (an ingenious
touch that I’m definitely stealing for my home cooking). Providing the
plate with a pop of color was a kale, red cabbage, carrot, and red onion
slaw dressed in an addicting Asian-style citrus vinaigrette.
The Bo Peep burger sounded too good to pass up…and almost looked
to good to eat. Served with a generous helping of fries, the medium-rare
lamb patty was seasoned and cooked to my asking, with tasty toppings to
boot, like grilled onions, pickled cucumbers, feta, lettuce, tomatoes, and
paprika-studded yogurt sauce (similar to tzatziki) on buttery brioche. If
you’re a lamb lover, you’ll love this burger…I guarantee it.
Bricks is casual eating done right. The carpeted flooring means that
even when it’s crowded you can still carry on a conversation, and the fare
has just enough flair to keep you coming back for more.
tionery: Shorty’s Doughnuts. A vintage ’70s step van, the namesake “Shorty” is a fun food truck
that can bring pastry chef Morgan Hunter’s decadent doughnuts straight to you. These are not
your average pink box creations, as Hunter produces unique flavor combinations such as Butter &
Salt (a glazed buttermilk doughnut with a perfect salty-sweet balance) and The Peachy (a brioche
doughnut with a bourbon peach glaze and peach dust). Flavors change monthly and according
to season, but on a recent visit to their storefront (currently open on Fridays from 7 a.m. till sold
out), I indulged in a Vanilla Cake Doughnut that was anything but basic. With either buttermilk or
brioche as a base, Shorty’s manages to be both light in consistency and dense, without the overly
fried taste of traditional doughnuts. The vanilla cake offering was sweet, satisfying, and topped with a heap of rainbow sprinkles that had my inner
kid smiling gleefully. Shorty’s menu also offers coffee and mochi ice cream, and you can follow them on Instagram (@shortysdoughnuts) to find
their next pop-up location. Alternatively, hire them directly for your next special event, as Shorty’s will be a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. Shingle
