Style Magazine, Roseville, Granite Bay, & Rocklin; September 18

Whether it’s the work perks, camaraderie with fellow co-workers, or a passion for the business’ product or service, there are many components that play into a company’s “cool” factor. Where we live, we’re lucky to have a ton of places that meet all the criteria above, plus more, which was the inspiration behind this month’s feature. Starting on page 39, you can read about 17 places headquartered here that anyone would be lucky to work at. Some have been around for over a century, others started small and are now internationally known, and a few have dog-friendly digs or do impressive amounts of community service. I’m pretty positive there’s a company, and office culture, that’ll strike a chord with you. And if you happen to be job hunting, word on the street is some are currently hiring! Wherever you’re at in your professional or personal journey, let this issue be a reminder that it’s never too late to flip the script and try something new. Cheers!

GUIDE
What’s the coolest company you’ve
ever worked for? For me, that
question is impossible to answer,
as each place has had its fair
share of pros. From my first job as
a “sandwich artist” at Auburn’s
Maidu Market where I could walk
to work, consume all the subs I craved, and was
once given free tickets to Coldplay (courtesy
of a loyal customer); to a summer bartending
gig at The Westin San Diego where I posted up
poolside and mixed mai tais for guests soaking
up the sun, there have been many monumental
memories. Even in my current role, I can’t
complain. Product samples aplenty, a laid-back
work environment, gratis granola bars and the
ability to connect with our community while
getting to be creative are all
reasons why I’ve been here
for over eight years now.
Whether it’s the work
perks, camaraderie with
fellow co-workers, or a
passion for the business’
product or service, there are
many components that play
“Inner peace begins
the moment you
choose not to allow
another person or
event to control
your emotions.”—
Unknown
into a company’s “cool” factor. Where we live,
we’re lucky to have a ton of places that meet
all the criteria above, plus more, which was
the inspiration behind this month’s feature.
Starting on page 39, you can read about 17
places headquartered here that anyone would
be lucky to work at. Some have been around
for over a century, others started small and
are now internationally known, and a few have
dog-friendly digs or do impressive amounts
of community service. I’m pretty positive
there’s a company, and office culture, that’ll
strike a chord with you. And if you happen to
be job hunting, word on the street is some are
currently hiring!
In other news this month, September is
National Yoga Month, which means it’s a prime
time to put all your fears or assumptions about
the practice aside (no, you don’t have to be
female, flexible, or affluent) and give it a try.
To help you get inspired, we have “10 Off-the-
Beaten-Mat Yoga Classes” in Health & Wellness
(page 22)—offerings that run the gamut from
goat yoga (yes, it’s a thing and yes, it’s available
locally) to a sculpt class that incorporates
weights and cardio to really push you to your
edge. There’s even a sidebar about a nonprofit
(Sacramento Free Yoga) whose website lists
complimentary classes around the region.
Once you sign up, turn to Swag on page 36 for
a roundup of omazing products that’ll help you
start your asana in style. As someone dedicated
to downward dogging, I can honestly say that
yoga has made me a kinder, stronger, and more
present person—not to mention saved me from
having multiple meltdowns.
Wherever you’re at in your professional or
personal journey, let this issue be a reminder
that it’s never too late to flip the script and try
something new. Cheers!
What are you looking
forward to most
about autumn?
“Walking through Central
Park to see the beautiful fall
colors—salted caramel mocha
in hand.”—Kourtney Jason
“Putting on a cozy sweater and
warm boots then going for
a walk to enjoy the brisk
weather and fall colors; after,
coming home to make hot
cocoa (with extra chocolate
and mini marshmallows!) in
my favorite cup.”—Sabrina
Gonzalez
“Born in October, I am a ‘fall baby’ and
definitely appreciate a time for
harvest! There’s nothing better
than jumping in my ‘86 Jeep
Wagoneer and heading to
Davis Ranch to grab seasonal
produce then cooking
something cozy at home. I also
love a few pumpkins, a hay bale,
and some cornstalks on the front
porch!”—Kerrie L. Kelly
“Hiking in the mountains right
as the leaves begin to change
colors. My family and I usually
pack a picnic and spend all
day enjoying the fall air. I also
enjoy taking country drives
to Apple Hill and stopping
at Boa Vista Orchards for
hot apple donuts and cider.”—
Margo Ezell has lived in
Roseville for over four
decades and is beloved
in the community for her
tireless volunteer efforts.
After retiring at 60 from Pacific Bell (now AT&T),
Ezell knew she wanted to make a difference.
Her younger days of being adrift—at 18, shortly
after her father’s death, she bought a Greyhound
ticket for as far away as her limited funds would
take her and wound up in Sacramento, surviving
on odd jobs until eventually finding steady
work—would later help Ezell empathize deeply
in her efforts to help the homeless.
Over the past 20 years, she’s volunteered with
and sits on the board of directors of What Would
Jesus Do?, providing meals and transportation
services for those in dire need, and liaised with
countless other area nonprofits, lending a hand
wherever she can. These days, you might find her
passing out meals at St. Vincent de Paul’s food bank
or driving someone less fortunate to a medical,
DMV, or court appointment. Her passion project
is making sure those with SSI (Supplemental
Security Income) are able to take advantage of
their benefits and find the resources they need to
get back on their feet. For all her efforts, Ezell was
honored with the 2017 Sylvia Besana Community
Volunteer Award. “It’s rewarding to see someone
shares. “It enriches own my life in return.”
and they’ve been grown for thousands of years in Asia and
Europe. Our cooler Sierra foothill nights create the best possible growing environment for
a wide variety of them, including Gravenstein, Gala, Jonathan, and Golden Delicious. The
aforementioned types tend to be the early harvest, followed by Red
Delicious, Granny Smith, Fuji, and Rome. As one of the most cultivated
and consumed fruits in the world, they’re continuously touted as being
a “miracle food.”
to prioritize city services. Incorporating that
input, difficult cuts were made, such as the
Fourth of July fireworks, Holiday Craft Fair,
campfires at Maidu Museum, Wednesdays
on Tap, and the Oktoberfest hosted by the
City of Roseville; event series such as the
Downtown Holiday Celebration, Friday Flicks,
Boot Camp, and Concerts on the Square have also been scaled back.
Though expenses have been reduced the past 10 years, cuts will be increasingly
noticeable to the public, including continued Friday closures for all libraries; reduced
public hours on Saturdays at the Maidu Museum and Historic Site; decreased playground
maintenance; removal of portable restrooms in parks; and less frequent mowing, custodial
services, pruning, and fertilizing in parks.
Citywide cuts include police, fire, and roadways, and a variety of other services. Community
outreach showed a preference to increase revenue over cutting services, so residents will have
the opportunity to vote in November on a half-cent sales tax increase to preserve city services.
NUTRITION // Apples are a low-calorie snack and a good source of
vitamin C, fiber, flavonoids, and important antioxidants. What’s
more, they’re energy-dense and water-rich, making you feel full, and free of fat, sodium, and
Rustic Apple
Tart with
Rosemary and
Crème Fraîche
cholesterol. Chewing an apple helps clean
your teeth and stimulates your gums (one
of the many great reasons to pack them in a
lunch). Try to avoid peeling them, as many
of the beneficial nutrients are contained in
the skin.
SELECTION AND STORAGE // Apples store
best in a cool environment, like a crisper
drawer. Discard ones that are decaying, as the
gas they produce will turn any surrounding
fruit bad as well. To prevent browning of pre-sliced apples for packed lunches,
simply dip apple slices in lemon juice. For extended storage, space slices on a
cookie sheet, freeze, and then transfer to bags.
Passport
to Student
Wellness
School faculty members know that academic
success relies on students' overall wellness,
and with kids spending much of their time
at school, it's important for educators,
administrators, and counselors to be in tune
with programs dedicated to improving the
prosperity of students and their families.
Understanding the importance of this,
Placer County Office of Education (PCOE) is
holding their annual Passport to Student
Wellness on September 13 from 8:30 a.m.
to noon at @the Grounds in Roseville where
attendees are given a passport that is to be
stamped at each table and then entered
into a raffle. This free event is open to local
school staff members (K-12 educators,
school counselors, and administrators) and
will feature over 40 local public service
organizations displaying their services and
resources. "Many students and families are
unaware of the resources that are available
in our community. Our vision is to connect
school staff to community resources so they
know where to point their students and
families for support—whether they need
food, housing, counseling, or substance abuse
recovery," explains PCOE Community Affairs
Director Kindra Britt. Guest speaker Alicia
Rozum, MSW, PPSC, will speak at 9 a.m. about
her experiences in education and how local
resources have helped the youth she’s worked
with. Student wellness is vital and with support
from educators and local resources, students
and their families can flourish.. —Emily Peter
ASK THE Expert
I RECENTLY CHANGED MY DIET AND HAVE STARTED EXPERIENCING BREAKOUTS. COULD WHAT I EAT BE THE CULPRIT?
Maybe. The relationship between diet and acne
is a popular area of research today, and we still
don’t have all the pieces to the puzzle. While diet
choices will not treat acne, they can influence
it. Our typical American diet tends to have more
refined carbohydrates and high-glycemic index
foods. For some people with acne, these food choices
can make their breakouts worse or last longer. I suggest sticking
to a low-glycemic index diet that includes a variety of fruits and
vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats. If your breakouts
continue to flare with these diet changes, it’s time to consider
additional therapies.
Northern California
Children’s Chorus
All the Right Notes by HEATHER L. BECKER
Serving Placer, Sacramento, and El Dorado Counties,
Roseville-based Northern California Children’s
Chorus (NCCC) has thrived under Artistic Director
Judy Britts for 10 years now. “We started when
a few parents asked if it was possible to have
a choir in the [area], instead of having to drive
to Sacramento,” Britts says. “We began with 30
singers in two choirs and have grown to 70 singers in four levels.” Expanding upon
music programs at local schools, NCCC provides music reading and
performing skills, as well as vocal training that most schools
simply don’t have the time or resources for. Holding auditions
three times a year, NCCC has performed internationally
at Gloucester Cathedral and Trinity Church in England,
nationally at Carnegie Hall and Grace Cathedral, and
locally at the Harris Center. Currently, they have their
sights set on the Pacific International Choral Festival in
Eugene, Oregon, and are planning to release their second
album this fall.
HLB: YOUR MISSION SPEAKS OF NURTURING THE HUMAN SPIRIT
OF ALL CHILDREN. HOW SO?
JB: [We recently traveled to] Wales and England with our touring choir and it magnified
to all of us how music—a very powerful vehicle that can move people through all
emotions—transcends all lines of nationality and musical styles. We’ve performed in
grand cathedrals and for a group of senior citizens on a bingo holiday. To the singers,
it doesn’t matter who they perform for, just that they get to share something they love
to do: sing! There are lots of children who love to sing and who want to sing well, and
we have a program for them.
who will grow to be adults.
JB: Besides conducting three of the four choirs in NCCC, I also conduct the semiprofessional
women’s ensemble, Chanteuses, in Sacramento.
From time to time, I sing in my church choir and lend a hand
directing too. As a singer, I’ve been active in choir since I was
five years old.
HLB: WHY IS MUSIC AND LIVE PERFORMANCE SO VITAL TO
YOUNG PEOPLE?
JB: Music brings people together. As a singer, it allows you to
emote the expression of the text being sung down to the core.
If done well, that text will reach to the souls of those who
are listening. I truly believe that it’s the singer who benefits
the most from performances, however. They not only gain
performing skills, self-confidence, and self-awareness but
learn how to work with one another, how to listen, how to
adjust, and how to harmonize with the other singers. And
isn’t that what we want for our children? We need them to
know how to do this—not just as singers but as young people
Ticket to Dream
Foundation
Fostering Hope by TARA MENDANHA // photos by DANTE FONTANA
Their battle cry is “It’s for the kids,” which is
exactly what Ticket to Dream Foundation
is all about. In a country where almost half
a million children are in foster care, “[Ticket
to Dream] provides hope and opportunity
for foster children across the nation, so they
can just be kids,” says Gina Davis, executive
director of the foundation.
The Roseville-based charity collaborates with
companies, individuals, and foundations to effectively and
efficiently pool resources and distribute items that are in high demand (school supplies,
properly fitting clothes, and shoes) and memorable experiences (trips to the zoo, music
lessons, team sports, etc.) and fund vital support programs reaching 170,000 foster
kids in over 43 states. They also fund “aging out” programs that increase graduation
rates, provide housing, access to laptops, and teach employment/life skills aimed at
preparing foster youth for adulthood, ultimately reducing the rate of homelessness as
they leave foster care.
Juan Garcia, Collin Orn, Morgan Kestrloot, and Mauri Knowles
Given that over 400,000 children are in foster care, the overwhelming demand for
supplies and nurturing across the country can be staggering. To that end, the foundation
uses their network to identify common needs through flash polls and surveys that enable
them to see what programs their partners have, what resources they already have enough
of, what their unmet needs are, and what new needs are emerging—allowing for a quick
tailoring of programs and allocation of resources. By utilizing marketing, corporate
outreach, accounting, and
strategic planning, the
leadership team strives to find
solutions, ease burdens, and
create deserving childhoods.
Through careful and generous
planning, they’ve distributed
over 3.7 million essential items
and 34,000 tickets to events,
funded extracurricular activities
for 16,000 youth, helped increase
support for 2,000 youth aging out
of care, and provided over 1,500
laptops. There are many kids
that sleep in their new shoes
from sheer excitement and
countless stories of how foster
youth have blossomed after
joining a soccer team or taking
dance lessons. “We’ve received
tiny scrawled notes saying
they’ve had ‘the best day of my
life’ after a trip to the fair or sports game,”
recalls Davis.
With partners like Bonneville
Sacramento—whose radio stations Mix
96, KNCI 105.1, NOW 100.5, and KHTK
Sports along with four on-air ambassadors
raise awareness and funds for
foster youth in the region—and
generous companies like
BEARPAW, who host foster
youth events and provide
hundreds of shoes for kids,
they’re on the right track to
bringing some semblance of
a normal childhood into these
children’s lives.
The foundation also hosts
essential item drives with corporate
partner Mattress Firm collecting back-toschool
supplies, holiday gifts, clothing,
and shoes, along with co-hosting the
annual Ticket to Dream Golf Classic
(September 26 at Catta Verdera Country
Club) and various other events. Their
Holiday Toy Drive enables local residents
to drop toys off at any Mattress Firm
store, donate online, or host a drive at
churches or companies. “Whether it’s $10
or $10,0000, we know that when we all
work together we can create big change,”
asserts Davis.
Beauty Rest
6 Dreamy Bedding Motifs by KERRIE L. KELLY, FASID
Of all the rooms in a house, your bedroom is one of the
most important when it comes to getting it right. It’s
where we rejuvenate the soul and rest the body;
plus, it’s personal. Thankfully, it’s also one of the
easiest and least expensive areas to overhaul, revamp, or renew.
Cool & Composed
This tailored menswearinspired
style features
everything from subtle
geometric plaids and checks to
striking chevrons, all in a cool,
calm color palette. To avoid
any sense of “I’m too cool to
be cool,” this look lends itself
beautifully to a bit of added glamour and softness, such as a
luxuriously crafted pillow or two in complementary tones.
3
The bed itself is the single most important element,
as everything else is arranged around it. While lighting,
nightstands, and window treatments certainly contribute,
the style of the bed and its accessories—bedsheets, blankets,
pillows, and headboard—are what truly reflect your unique
statement. See below to discover which style speaks to you.
1
Hollywood Glam
A bedroom that exudes
“Hollywood glam” is elegant,
theatrical, and ready for a
close-up. As its namesake
suggests, this style is not known
for subtlety; oftentimes it’s a
showpiece of luxury, style, and
personality—think lavish fabrics,
tassels, embellishments, and mirrored surfaces. With this star
aesthetic, there’s no such thing as too much shine, so go ahead
and toss a faux fur throw across the bed for the perfect touch
of Hollywood bravado.
Wild & Free
Free-spirited and relaxed, the boho chic style
draws inspiration from the seasoned world
traveler. It combines East and West, vintage
and modern, and showcases an eclectic
blend of patterns, textures, and colors.
Though this look can be either minimal and
calm or colorful and demanding, beautiful
textiles, unique color combinations, and
tribal patterned pillows and bedding are all
a must for transforming your bedroom into
this bohemian, carefree style.
Canyon Road
If you’ve chosen to create a modern
desert oasis in your room, pick
4
bedding that reflects the warm, muted
colors and intricate design elements
that are part of Southwestern style.
Fans of this look want to create
rooms that feel spacious, tranquil,
and in harmony with nature. The
color palette itself shows a great
Ski Chalet Chic
As winter approaches,
the cozy ski chalet look is
perhaps the most inviting
of all, especially in a
bedroom. But you don’t
need snow falling outside
to achieve this look. Start
with natural materials, lots
of texture, and a neutral
palette of winter whites, ivories, and creams; then sprinkle in
some taupe-y browns and greys in varying shades to add interest
and depth of color. Though tartan plaids and blanket stripes
have a long history in ski homes and lodge styling, introducing
them in these softer colors instantly updates the look.
5
appreciation for the subtle, natural tones found in stones,
sand, soil, local plants, and the sky (i.e., creamy whites and
tans paired with burnt orange and rust tones). There’s also a
definite element of texture involved in this aesthetic, which is
key to honoring the importance it places on natural materials
and handiwork and can easily be achieved with a coarsely
woven bedcover or the dense softness of blankets and throws.
6
Fashion Forward
Encompassing a vibe that combines
high-end fashion runways, street
chic, and the hottest new trends,
this style’s décor might include
an eclectic mix of animal prints,
richly colored velvets, and quirky
their approximately 5,600 employees have a disability.
Humble beginnings: PRIDE was founded in 1966 in the basement of a church in
and the surrounding region—in various grocers and restaurants,
including Raley’s, Carpe Vino, farmers’ markets, and more.—AM
Otow Orchard sells in-season tree fruits throughout the year,
including delicious apples, pears, quince, pomegranates, and
mandarins, but they are best known for growing and preserving
persimmons. Fresh persimmons are tasty, but Otow Orchard takes
the flavor to a whole new level with a traditional Japanese drying
technique called hoshigaki. During the 3-6-week process (per
persimmon!), the peeled fruits are dried in the sun and massaged
every 3-5 days while the weather is carefully monitored, resulting
in a sweet, moist persimmon with a highly concentrated flavor.
History is sweet: The orchard was purchased in 1911 by
Kichitaro Kawano, who left it to his widow and daughter, Helen
Otow, in 1939. After the war, Helen and her husband Seiichi
slowly brought the farm back to life. It is now taken care of by
Brickyard
Elevated Pub Grub by LORN RANDALL // photos by DANTE FONTANA
Brian O’Neill wanted a place where
friends could get together and hang
out, watch sports, listen to music,
enjoy good food, and partake in some of
our region’s remarkable craft beers. When
I want to do the same, I put the hose in
the plastic pool, break out the burgers
and dogs, throw a sixer on ice, and let the
good times roll. Well, O’Neill had a grander
scheme: opening the nearly 6,000-squarefoot
combination restaurant, taphouse,
sports bar, and live music venue he named
Brickyard Kitchen and Bar.
I stopped by on a busy Friday evening
(just missing the 3-6 p.m. Happy Hour)
and sat at the bar, ready to wage war
on all things protein and carbohydrate.
After sampling a few craft beers, I moved
on to another necessary carb: the Brick
“COMBINED WITH PICKLED JALAPEÑOS, SHARP WHITE
CHEDDAR, AND...WAIT FOR IT...BACON, THE PEANUT
BUTTER BURGER WAS A MUST-TRY MENU ITEM.”
to make sure you’re
drinking one of the 16 rotating beers on
tap.
Peanut Butter Burger
After quizzing my bartender on his
favorite menu item (chicken street tacos),
I manned up and ordered the trio—
pork, steak, and chicken (they also offer
vegetarian but, as stated, this was war and
no one goes to battle on salad). Admittedly,
the shredded chicken with pico de gallo,
sliced avocado, and serrano-citrus aioli
was my favorite also, but who can argue
with steak or pork? The balloting was
close.
Street Tacos
Fish & Chips
Brick Fries
Sticking with a brew-themed
adventure, I ordered the beer-battered
fish and chips with fries and a refreshing
coleslaw dressed in serranocitrus
aioli. The fish was exactly
what I like in my F&C: large
pieces of flaky, white cod with
a crispy, crunchy, crave-worthy
exterior that’s too much work
(and mess) to duplicate at home.
OK, here’s where things
got a little dicey. Maybe it was
the beer catching up, but the
peanut butter burger somehow
seemed intriguing.
I’m a curious sort,
but peanut butter
on a hamburger?
Here are the facts,
ma’am: It’s Thai
peanut sauce, not
your everyday American-style Jiffy in a
jar and complemented—as opposed to
overpowered—the other ingredients.
Combined with pickled jalapeños,
sharp white cheddar, and…wait for it…
bacon, it was a must-try menu item.
With a lengthy lineup of weekly
FOODIE
FIND
by JULIE RYAN
Back: Mocha Granita and Avocado Toast; front: Dragon Bowl and Brazilian Cielo Bowl
Cielo Açaí Café // Isn’t it the best when you discover delicious food and find out it’s also good for you? I recently visited Cielo
Açai Café and that’s exactly what happened. The family-owned establishment specializes in the açai berry, (pronounced ahh-sigh-eee), which
is grown in Brazil and has numerous health benefits including improved immunity and digestion, increased energy, and anti-aging effects for
skin. Customers can choose from several açaí bowls—including the popular Paradise or Macaco offerings—or create their own concoctions with
add-ons like fresh fruit, Nutella, maca powder, coconut shavings, and chia seeds. I decided to order the traditional Brazilian Cielo Bowl—an
all-organic, dairy-free offering with açaí, granola, strawberries, and bananas, plus an optional drizzle of locally grown honey. Each bite tasted,
and made me feel, so good…so very good. My daughter chose the Dragon Bowl, and though the electric pink color of the pitaya (dragon
fruit) alone was amazing, the taste was equally appealing. She loved the addition of granola, strawberries, and bananas and would be content
consuming this morning, noon, or night. Cielo also offers secret menu items via their Instagram account (@cielo_acai), smoothies, coffee
drinks like a mouthwatering Mocha Granita, and teas, as well as Avocado Toast; what’s more, the ambiance is light, bright, and über inviting.
It’s a healthy hotspot that’s quickly becoming “the spot” in Roseville. 1611 Lead Hill Boulevard, Roseville, 916-297-7951, cieloacai.com.
THE HOT LIST
Keeping It Real
6 Favorite Farm-to-Fork Restaurants compiled by STYLE STAFFERS // photos by DANTE FONTANA
Nowadays, it seems like every eatery touts having farm-to-table fare, but some places deliver on their
promise in a big way (think onsite gardens and menus that change based on farmers’ market finds). Read
on for our favorites—handpicked just for you. In no particular order...
High Hand Café
Farmhaus
Bacchus House Wine, Bar & Bistro
The Chef’s Table
The Farm Table
Flower Farm Café
“High Hand Café has an
unforgettable menu (I’ve been
for both breakfast and lunch)
and a light, bright dining room
that’s actually a glass-enclosed
greenhouse. The lemon artichoke dip
is always a winner (hello, homemade
potato chips!), in addition to the
seasonal salads, wood-fired pizzas,
and desserts. It’s a prime place to
take out-of-town guests or celebrate
a special occasion. Be sure to make
reservations, though—apparently
I’m not the only one who enjoys
their food and idyllic setting.”
highhandnursery.com/
taste-the-cafe
“Farmhaus in Granite Bay
is where I go to feed my
soul. Their menu promises
high-quality produce on your
plate and everything is made
from scratch—including their
pasta. Try the mouthwatering
French toast, farm bowl
with watermelon radish, or
truffled mushroom crostini
and you’ll see what all the
fuss is about. Their Northern
California wines, colorful
plates, and rustic farmhouse
interiors have me hooked.”
farmhausfresh.com
“The Chef’s Table prides
itself on using local ingredients
that are handled with care and
brought lovingly to the table.
Their rotating menu keeps me
eager to go back and consists
of organic grass-fed beef from
SunFed Ranch, sustainably
sourced Fra’mani ham, and
house-smoked salmon. What’s
more, they recently opened
a full-service bar that offers
24 rotating beers on tap,
wine, and craft cocktails…
in case you needed
another reason to visit.”
thechefstablerocklin.
com
“Loomis’ Flower Farm
Café has a mouthwatering
selection of rustic eats (think
salads, flatbreads, omelets,
and grilled sandwiches) that
change based on what can
be picked from the property’s
farm. There’s also an orange
grove on site, which provides
the café with its fresh-squeezed
orange juice and blood orange
garnishes. To top it off, you
can select a homemade pastry
from their coffee bar or sip on
local craft beers while sitting
outside amongst the garden.”
flowerfarminn.com/
services3
“I often frequent Folsom’s Bacchus
House Wine, Bar & Bistro that’s
named after the Roman God of wine,
bountiful harvest, and eternal festivity.
They celebrate California through
fresh, organic produce and proudly list
the farms they feature on their menu
(Capay Organic, California Olive Ranch,
and Niman Ranch, to name a few).
Lunch consists of seasonal salads and
soups (including organic carrot and
ginger) and dinner offers scrumptious
entrées like fresh halibut and panseared
scallops. It’s locavore feasting at
its finest.” bacchushousebistro.
com
“At The Farm Table in
Placerville, I get to enjoy Earth’s
bounty on a plate and at their
market. They turn local ingredients
into memorable meals, including a
bevy of gluten-free and vegetarian
options. The ciabatta bread,
salads, and soups are made from
scratch and their Sunday brunch
is not to be missed. The housemade
sausages, house-cured
bacon, and farm-fresh organic
eggs are always tempting. Sign up
for their gourmet clubs to receive
farm-to-your-very-own-table
goodies throughout the year.”
Seasonal Recipe
DEATH BY
CHOCOLATE
ZUCCHINI BREAD
To be totally fair, zucchini bread is
one of those halfway-healthy recipes
Delish: Eat Like Every
Day’s the Weekend
that barely makes the cut. But it’s got
by Joanna Saltz and green in it—and that’s good enough
the Editors of Delish for us. This recipe is deeply chocolatey
(Houghton Mifflin but also delightfully light—so you
Harcourt, 2018, $30)
can eat an entire loaf while watching
‘Game of Thrones’ and not totally lose
your self-respect.
• 1/2 cup (1 stick)
melted butter, plus
more for greasing
pan
• 1/2 cup
unsweetened cocoa
powder, plus more
for dusting pan
• 1-1/4 cups allpurpose
flour
• 1 tsp. baking soda
• 1 tsp. ground
cinnamon
• 1/4 tsp. kosher salt
• 1 cup sugar
• 1 large egg
• 1 large egg yolk
• 1 teaspoon pure
vanilla extract
• 2 cups grated
zucchini (from 1 large
or 2 or 3 small)
• 2/3 cup semisweet
chocolate chips
• Flaky sea salt, for
garnish
1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter a 9x5-inch loaf
pan and dust with cocoa powder, tapping out
any excess.
2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa
powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt.
3. In another large bowl, stir together sugar,
egg, and egg yolk until smooth, 1 minute.
Add melted butter and vanilla and mix until
smooth, then fold in zucchini. Gradually add
flour mixture, then fold in chocolate chips.
TASTING NOTES: Rich, golden-hued color;
crisp, light, and flavorful; toasty aromas
KNEE DEEP BREWING COMPANY’S TANILLA PORTER
ABV: 6.3%
While you’re dying by chocolate, why not be revived by vanilla? Auburn’s beloved Knee
Deep Brewery makes a Tanilla Porter that delivers amazing aromas of coffee, followed
by a smooth chocolate flavor, and delicate intensity of grade A Tahitian vanilla beans.
While the beer looks dark and
Spanish for “mountain vines,” Plymouth-based Terra d’Oro Winery—home of Montevina—
has been crafting deeply flavored, robust wines that capture the unique character of
Amador County for over 50 years. For more info, visit montevina.com.
flavors of black cherry, blackberry,
OVERALL RATING is the average score (out of 5) given by Style staff tasters. Ratings should be taken with a grain
of salt, as we are by no means “experts”—just hard-working employees who enjoy imbibing.
bitter, don’t be fooled; with an
IBU (international bitterness
low on the scale. Much like this
heavy and pairs particularly
well with sweet treats, thanks
to a subtle carbonation
that allows it to go down
easy. While Knee Deep is
mostly known for their IPAs
and other hoppy beers, this
offering demonstrates the
brewery’s ability to produce
other styles with great
success.
Q&A WITH LOCAL COMPANIES
DNA Dance Collective
AMBER RODRIGUEZ, DEREK TROY, AND DANIELLE
BORDEAUX
106 North Sunrise Avenue, Suite C6, Roseville, dnadance.co
Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?
We’re a boutique dance collective focused on providing a
competitive edge for students who wish to grow their fundamental
technique or for those pursuing the next step in the dance industry.
After working in various large recreational dance studios across
California and the East Coast, we all had a similar desire to be a
change agent in the local dance studio/company scene and build
something where current industry education and families were
at the cornerstone. We wanted to build closer relationships to our
dancers, families, and the community by creating a small, safe, and
innovative environment for dancers.
How are you involved with both the community and your
customer?
We plan to have students perform at community events (parades,
festivals, recitals, competitions, etc.). We also volunteer our time
teaching dance programs via master classes and arts-focused
enrichment programs at local elementary schools.
What life accomplishments are you most proud of?
Amber: Having my daughter Penelope. She has been my biggest
triumph and tested my strength in every facet of my life: personal,
emotional, and professional.
Derek: Winning Hip Hop International with Chapkis Dance and
competing in the world hip hop category; it was a once-in-a-lifetime
experience.
Danielle: Traveling overseas to India and China and spreading the love
of dance with the Sacramento Kings dance team. It was a humbling
and incredible experience that I’ll forever cherish and be proud of.
What’s your biggest job perk?
The relationships! We love our DNA family, and the golden rule is
constantly in play in every decision. We treat our dancers with respect,
love, and dignity but also push them to limits they didn't know they had.
The feedback loop is crucial, especially in dance, and while we certainly
give it to our dancers, we expect the same in return from our families.
JESSICA TILLERY
8048 Auburn Boulevard, Suite A, Citrus Heights, 916-735-8225,
allqualitygraphics.com
Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?
All Quality Graphics (AQG) is a custom screen printing and embroidery
company serving businesses, schools, clubs, teams, churches, and
organizations of all sizes. AQG definitely found me and roped me in!
Never in a million years did I think I would be in the apparel decorating
business.
How are you involved with both the community and your
customer?
We’re members of the local Kiwanis club and chambers of commerce
and are huge supporters of our region’s Little League teams, schools, and
nonprofits. Not only do we decorate uniforms and spirit wear for these
organizations, but we sponsor and volunteer at their events.
Why is your staff the best in the business?
My entire team is educated, extremely passionate, creative, has an
eye for detail, and always has the client’s best interest in mind. We’re
perfectionists and accept nothing less than being the best of the best
and providing unparalleled customer service and the absolute highest
quality products. What’s more, we understand the importance and
impact of a logo or image; a message or slogan printed on a T-shirt or
garment can become a brand, catchphrase, or the talk of the town and
be a powerful marketing tool or inspiration in motion.
What life accomplishments are you most proud of?
Studying abroad during college in Brazil, earning my master's degree,
leaving the corporate world, and taking the plunge to become selfemployed;
most importantly, having and raising a beautiful baby girl.
Where do you go when the going gets tough?
I spend more time in church and in prayer, focusing on Psalm 28:7:
The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and
he helps me.
And finally, customer service is…?
Key! We pride ourselves on stellar customer service and relationships.
DO YOU KNOW THAT OUR EDITORIAL IS NOT PAID FOR, NOR CAN IT BE PURCHASED?
In fact, our Introducing and Eat & Drink section reviews are not paid advertisements. If you’d like your business profiled, please email Megan Wiskus at megan@stylemg.com. Once we
determine when your business will be featured, we will contact you to schedule a time to come out and take a photograph. Thank you!
