~ HANDMADE FOR CHRISTMAS 2018 ~
A glorious mix of unique and beautiful gifts
from local designers, artists and makers
Is it a gallery? Is it a gift shop? Is it a craft fair?
No! It’s two months of Christmas shopping heaven.
????? DO YOU VALUE ?????
* Superb craftsmanship and design *
* The beautiful, quirky and unique *
* Local enterprise *
* Sitting by a roaring fire with a cup of something warming *
* A chat and a laugh *
* Good company *
Then this is most definitely the place (and time) for you.
For just two months each year this unassuming little Victorian Chapel
metamorphoses into a glowing beacon of hope for all those who quail at the
thought of the dreaded Christmas shopping trip. Dozens of very talented local
elves and elfesses have been toiling all year in their workshops to make the most
perfect hand-crafted gifts for those on your list (and I’m absolutely certain you
deserve a little something for yourself as well).
If you would like to know more about what goes on in the WC (yes! I know) for the
rest of the year, please visit the website and sign up to the monthly(ish) newsletter.
Welcome to the seventh HANDMADE FOR CHRISTMAS!
As ever, we have a veritable Aladdin’s Cave of wonder for you to enjoy.
Over 60 makers/artists, most of them local, have worked their nimble
little fingers to the bone to make certain we are able to offer the most
wonderful array of handmade goodies to be found anywhere. The warmest
of welcomes is assured. Spread the word – tell all your friends – better still,
bring them along! See you in Chapel!
Going Green
Why not give a
Handmade for Christmas
Gift Token?
Or leave a wish list with us,
so your family can buy
you something you
REALLY want
;-)))
After using up last year’s
supplies of bubble wrap and
sellotape we will be moving to
biodegradable bubble wrap and latexgummed
paper tape. We already use
lovely recycled brown paper carriers,
but will have a stock of pre-used bags
and boxes if you would prefer. We
also encourage exhibitors to use
compostable cellulose wrappers
for their greetings cards
wherever possible.
Okey dokey! Let’s get on with the introductions!!
I’m Rose… the one with the colourful glasses. I’m supposed
to be in charge, but I’ll leave you to make your own mind up
about that one……
Then there’s my long-suffering husband Bob – he makes sure
there’s enough wood to keep the fire in the manner to which
it has become accustomed. You may not see much of him, as
he tends to get banned for bad behaviour!!! ;-)
And let’s not forget the team of lovely, willing, helpful elves
– they’ll be oh-so-happy to help you with your shopping,
get you a cup of tea/coffee and generally be cheerily
useful.
And now… prepare to MEET YOUR MAKERS!
How to sort and categorise this rather odd bunch? A gently meandering path
through the various disciplines seems to work just fine, starting with textiles,
then jewellery, metal and wood, ceramics and glass, leather, paint and print.
13 exhibitors are brand-sparkly * NEW * to Handmade this year – a huge
welcome to them – some are (but not in a Levi’s jeans kind of way)
and deserve a medal. Most are from within a 40 mile radius of the
Chapel; a few are exotic ‘outsiders’ who add diversity to the mix. Many offer
workshops - these are listed in ‘Workshops and Courses’ on page 38.
All have been carefully selected and invited to take part, so ensuring that
Handmade brings you the very best in fantastic quality and value.
w
Together they make Handmade for Christmas a truly unique event.
~THE 2018 EXHIBITOR SURVEY RESULTS~
Over the past couple of years I’ve delved into the potato preferences and holiday
habits of our exhibitors – if you’ve missed the results (or wonder where all the
exhibitors are) I can confidently tell you that they’re all by the sea… in a tent…
eating roasties. This year I thought I’d do a bit of in-depth research into superpowers,
tea-drinking and tree-dressing, best biscuits and worst presents. And this
is what I’ve discovered!!!!
Good old builder’s tea is the order of the day, made with a teabag. Most
exhibitors aspire to the sophistication of loose leaves in a pot, but few of us have
the patience to do anything about it. Not many take sugar in their tea, but those
who do are inordinately proud of it and happily accept the censure and disdain
of the non-sugarers. Milk in last – as some said “How on earth would you
get the colour right otherwise!” – that’s artists for you… Oh – and if you
haven’t got builder’s, Earl Grey will do nicely thanks.
Some prefer a fine bone china cup – what kind of charmed
lives do they lead!??? – but you’ll be safe as long as you serve
it in a handmade mug.
To dunk or not to dunk? An overwhelming “Yes” here! But there
were just a few dissenting voices who view dunking as a vile perversion (they’re
wrong, of course, but in the interests of serious research, I had to mention it).
What to dunk? It seems Dark Chocolate Digestives top the leaderboard, although
Hobnobs and Gingernuts are pretty close. But then they’re fave for non-dunking too.
20
So on to the thorny (or is it needly?) issue of what to put on
the tree…
Plain white lights (definitely not flashing) and absolutely no
tinsel for most of us – BUT the few who do go for coloured
lights also adore tinsel with everything. Hardly anyone wants
their baubles to be co-ordinating, opting for a glorious unruly
mix of mess and memories.
Best Christmas presents included trips to Iceland, bicycles,
ponies and expensive laptops (because we’re worth it!). The
Worst Christmas present list is top heavy with socks, tights, pants (of all types)
and itchy jumpers, so maybe we can all learn a lesson from this... but then again,
Christmas simply wouldn’t be Christmas without them.
Superpowers and Superhero names – Flight topped the list (Eaglegirl, Kes,
WhizzyLizzy, Basketman, Flyfasterfran, SuperGirl, Falco Milvus), second were the
Time Travellers and History Changers – woah! that’s a dangerous one! (Woman
from the Future, Time Temptress, Timestar, Dr Who (sorry, that name’s taken), the
Fixer). Then in third place Ocean Cleaners and Ozone Fixers (Ocean Girl, Captain
Mermazing & Princess Lolitanotabaglady, Ultimate Eco Warrior).
Runners up included Invisibility (NoJoJo and Mirage),
Teleportation (Boo and HeywheredidshegoGirl),
Fabric Fusion (WonderwebWoman), Folding fitted
sheets (Supercrease), Telekinesis (Becca!put-thatdown!)
and Alan, who wants to save the world’s
trees (Trunkyman).
But as far as I’m concerned every last man (or
woman)-Jack of you is a superhero already xxxx
connects/ flows to become one.
