The Governmental Affairs Committee of the Fairmont Area Chamber of Commerce will be doing our best to make your decision more informed by assisting in Election Candidate Forums for our local election cycle. The 2018 election will cover a wide range of offices representing the citizens of Martin County, including both of our U.S. Senators, U.S. Representative for District 1, and State Representative for District 23A, as well as three Fairmont Area School Board seats and the County Commissioner positions for the Second and Fourth Districts. The City of Fairmont will be selecting a Mayor, and City Council persons will be chosen to fill the Ward 1 and Ward 3 seats. The Election Candidate Forums will be broadcast live, helping you get to know your local and regional candidates before Election Day arrives. Box 826 Fairmont, MN 56031 Phone: (507) 235-5547 www.FairmontChamber.org Preparing our future workforce The Fairmont Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to coordinate the Junior Achievement (JA) program in our schools each year through the generous support of our area businesses, local grants and individuals in our community. The mission of Junior Achievement is “To inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy.” Junior Achievement teaches principles of market-based economics and entrepreneurship in age appropriate increments, creating a stronger understanding of how the world around them works and how they fit into the greater economic picture. Our local Junior Achievement program relies on over 40 volunteer teachers and reaches an average of 57 classrooms totaling 1154 students in grades K- 6th and 8th grade. Our annual cost is $12,840 for the classroom kits alone. Our ability to continue offering the Junior Achievement program and to build toward a brighter future for students in area public and private schools depends largely on the generosity of the people in our community. Blue Ribbon Pork Cook Off award winners 3 1st Place Award - Cup N’ Saucer 2nd Place Award - Jessie's Smokehouse 3rd Place Award - The Blazer Bar & Grill The 21st Annual Martin County Blue Ribbon Pork Cook Off was held Wednesday, August 15th from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at the Martin County Fairgrounds with approximately 400 people in attendance. Proceeds from this event help support two annual $4,200 Agri-Business Scholarships for local students. The judges and the public agreed on the top entries for just the second time in Blue Ribbon Pork history with the winning contestants taking home their respective ribbons in both the Connoisseur's Choice and People's Choice categories. Each of our eight contestants gave a valiant effort, producing creative, mouth-watering porkinspired dishes, and presenting a formidable challenge for our judges and participants in selecting this year’s winning entries. We want to thank the Martin County Blue Ribbon Pork Cook Off Committee, all of our volunteers and the many sponsors who continue to make this annual event a success. Our 2018 sponsors were the Agri-Business Committee of the Fairmont Area Chamber, Bank Midwest, Cargill Inc., CFS, Compeer Financial, Dutch Creek Farms, Fairmont Veterinary Clinic, Kahler Automation, Martin Co.
