FROM THE PASTOR
Dear Church Family,
This past weekend, we learned that long-time Republican Senator, John McCain, passed away. McCain has
been a major figure in American politics for many years. He became well-known for his military service
and POW experience in Vietnam. He gained a reputation as a maverick in the Senate, sometimes running
against the grain of convention or against the wishes of his own party.
John McCain, who knew a thing or two about courage, once said that he believed that “Courage is like a
muscle. The more you use it, the more you build it up; but the less you use it, the weaker it becomes.”
The Bible has a thing or two to say about courage. "Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid," said the
Lord to Joshua as the Israelites prepared to enter the Promised Land (Joshua 1). "Do not be afraid," said the
Angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary when he announced to her that she would give birth to the Savior of the
world (Luke 1). "Let us approach the throne of grace with boldness," says the New Testament Letter to the
Hebrews (Hebrews 4).
Again and again the people of God are encouraged in Scripture not to let fear drive us, but to practice
courage in the face of fear.
Sometimes it takes courage to faithfully follow Christ. From introducing a prayer time into our own
families for the very first time, to inviting friends to church with us, to telling co-workers how our faith in
Jesus has changed our lives: any new step of obedience can be a bit scary. We wonder how people will
react. Offering forgiveness and letting go of past hurts can be scary. How will life be different if I finally
let go of that pain I've been clutching for so long? Taking seriously the Bible's teaching about financial
generosity can be scary: we wonder if God will really provide for our needs. Reaching out to a stranger
who is quite different from you; making a commitment to Christ in his church – all these things can be
scary.
Again and again, Scripture instructs us to be courageous, which means we keep going even when it gets
scary. The assurance that is given is this: God will be with us whenever we call on him, and our Lord will
give us the grace we need to see us through. He will help strengthen us when we start putting our "courage
muscle" to work in the service of Christ, and he will never leave us or forsake us. Where might God be
calling you to take a step of courageous faithfulness in your life?
May the Lord Jesus Christ bless and keep you+
-Rev. Daniel

to all.
Thank you to all of the parents of children and youth who have shared their time and ideas
for our Church Visioning Process. We all want the kids of the church to know the love of
Jesus and the love of their church family.
Look for announcements
coming in the next week
on our Youth Ministry
program. We are excited
to be making some
changes and getting our middle school and high
school youth involved. If you would like to help
out with youth or get your child involved, contact
the church office.
SFUMC is a prayer partner for The Upper Room Prayer. Prayer calls are taken
once a month on a Wednesday evening from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm in the
teachers will continue teaching this fall, and
lessons will be structured to teach children the
scripture lessons that they will also hear in
Worship/Children’s Church. There will also be
a time designated each Sunday for our “Bible
with the Bible and how it can serve as a tool
for their everyday lives.
relief when I do not have a cure, and that I may radiate Your healing peace when the limits of science, time,
