Earth and space sciences SURFACE CHANGES Lesson 5 Teacher notes Science inquiry focus: How does extreme weather change Earth’s coastlines? How can storm erosion be slowed down? Science Inquiry Skills: • Questioning and predicting QP • Planning and conducting PC • Processing and analysing data and information PA • Communicating C Science as a Human Endeavour: • Students make predictions and observations about the best way to decrease the impact of erosion on the coastline. Technology/Engineering/Mathematics links: • researching and discussing an online video • using a digital video recorder to document and play back results • creating an investigation plan using a digital application such as Book Creator Background information • Extreme weather is weather that is different from the usual pattern. This includes floods, storms, drought, a heat wave or a cold snap. These all have an impact on the Australian landscape. • Floods occur when there has been heavy rainfall, often associated with cyclones and storms, which overflows on normally dry land. The water can overflow from rivers, lakes, creeks and other natural waterways. • Erosion is the taking away of the broken-down rocks and sand. In the instance of the 2016 storms across the eastern coast of Australia, the king tide caused the waves and ocean water to be even more intense so the erosion was more severe. Major changes to the appearance of the coastline occurred. Assessment focus: • As a formative assessment use the experiment plan to check students’ understanding of how to plan, conduct and record results. • Observe the responses during the reflection to ascertain whether students understand how extreme weather such as a storm can change Earth’s surface by eroding the coastline, and what can be done to reduce the impact.
