SURFACE CHANGES
STEM project
Investigate
Revise weathering and erosion
and the difference between them.
Watch a video
which shows them in
action by scanning this
QR code or typing
into
a web browser.
Revise how different landforms are
formed over time, and the kind of
shapes you will need to recreate.
Explore iMovie ® or a similar
application, and look at sound
effect features and how to add
voice overs.
Design, plan and manage
Draw a plan of how your scene will
look and the four landforms you
will include.
Write a plan for the information
you will include in your voice
over for the video, being sure to
include the keywords erosion,
weathering and landforms.
Write a list of materials and
equipment you will need and
gather them together.
Create
Make the gelatine/soil mixture,
following the recipe.
Make or find the molds you want
to use.
Project steps
Pour the gelatine/soil mixture into
the molds and leave in the fridge
to set.
Create your scene, by placing your
landforms and other features into
a large tray or container that has
sides on it.
Measure the height and width
of each landform and record the
information in a table.
Pour warm water on your
landforms, as if it were raining,
and film the video showing what
happens.
Evaluate and refine
Do your landforms look like the
right shape and size?
Do you need to add anything else
to make the scene look better?
Did the water weather/erode the
landforms enough or do you need
to use warmer water or a different
tray?
Communicate
Add your voice over to the video,
explaining how you demonstrated
weathering and erosion, and add
sound effects or music.
Remeasure the height and width
of each landform and add a
digital version of the table of
measurements, from before and
after, to the end of your video.
Explain what the results represent.
