Artistry in Marketing - continued
What I'd give to walk around
Exeter before WWII. It must
have been absolutely glorious.
Apologies, Cornwall's mentioned here,
in fact direct comparisons between Italy
and Cornwall. The marketing man was
working hard. A strong message, although
you have to ask how people reached Italy
in those days. There were coach holidays
to Italy, but it must have been gruelling
without air conditioning.
Almost unreadable, it
says 'In the English Bay
of Naples' - that's the
Exmouth town council
marketing message!
Plymouth was an historic
jem, although the German
bombing destroyed most of
the historic buildings - is this
poster pre-WWII? See right
page. Here the poster refers to
the Mayflower departure in
1620, the 400th anniversary is
coming up in 2020.
Before the internet , town councils
were big players in their local
tourist trade
The Space Age is here, well
hardly, but what a great idea,
I suppose in the 60s and 70s
'picture' windows incorporated
in housing design were all the
thing, why not in the train also?
I can well remember when it
came (the internet), the stir it
created nothing like what I'd
imagine the appearance of the
first trains would have created.
Many people dismissed the
internet as a gimmick, much
scoffing and dismissive talk
issued forth. Website - why
do I need a website, don't be
silly! And here we are now,
everyone has a website.
But before the internet, how
would you book your holiday
accommodation? Well there
was the phone, although
letters were exchanged to
formalise the booking.
Let us not forget the Town
Guides which were created
by the tourist departments
of local town councils and
sent out across the UK. These
would contain advertisements
for hotels, B&Bs, tea shops,
restaurants and attractions to
visit. Being included within
if, say, you were a B&B, was
probably one of the very
few means by which you
could market your business
effectively. Back in those days
booking a hotel or B&B was
usually for a week (or even
two), in many cases including
breakfast and dinner. Today's
accommodation trend is for
much shorter stays and selfcatering.
The spirit of Drake (in the sky),
and why not, he's a significant
figure in our history - bravo!
64
Dad, think of the kids! - Paignton Town
Council launching in here to grab some
of the business (what you probably can't
read above is mention of the illustrated
guide to Paignton, available from the
entertainments manager at Paignton).
Incidentally, there's talk of bringing
back a Paignton Town Council after
some 50 years of abscence.
Paignton's most definitely
being marketed as a
family destination.
This is 'proper' creative
marketing.
Paignton, here looking
very 70s. Again for
a railway poster it
unusually has reference
to the Guide available
from the Old Town Hall.
Countryside, History, Walks, the Arts, Events & all things Devon at: DEVONSHIRE magazine.co.uk
A stylish, clever rendition
of Paignton beach
incorporating both beach
and bathing beauty -
probably not allowed
today, more's the pity!
