Earns anA
Send your kids to school with a nutritious
breakfast and they might come home with
better test scores and fewer behavioral
problems. There’s no doubt about it -
breakfast is a big deal. Decades of research
have shown that kids who make this meal a
habit have better diets, healthier bodies,
higher test scores, lighter moods and more
mental stamina. No matter how hectic your
mornings are, it’s worth taking the time to
make sure your kids get good food before
school starts.
Does breakfast really make a difference?
Food fuels the body with glucose, the main
energy source for the mind and muscles. This
refueling is especially important in the
morning because the body hasn’t had any
food since the night before. Children’s daily
nutrient intake also tends to be higher when
they eat breakfast, according to the American
Dietetic Association (ADA). Whole-grain cereal
with milk and a glass of citrus juice, for
example, delivers lots of vitamin C,
calcium, thiamin, riboflavin, fiber, iron
and folate.
Children who eat breakfast are also
more likely to have lower blood
cholesterol levels and are less likely to
gain weight, miss school or visit the
school nurse than children who don’t
have a morning meal.
Make a breakfast plan
Mornings can often be the busiest
part of the day. To help make sure
breakfast stays on your family’s
schedule no matter how pressed for
time you are, try these tips from the
ADA and the American Academy of
Pediatrics (AAP).
• Set your table the night before. Save
yourself a few precious minutes in the
morning by setting out dishes, cereal,
bagels, bread, fruit or instant breakfast
mix before you go to bed.
• Use last night’s leftovers. Don’t fret if
it’s not traditional breakfast food. A
slice of pizza or macaroni and cheese
warmed up in the microwave can still
provide needed nutrients.
• Keep your cupboards and fridge stocked
with quick, healthy breakfast foods, such
as granola bars, bagels, bananas, yogurt,
cottage cheese, dried fruit, instant
oatmeal, whole-wheat toaster waffles and
fruit or vegetable juice.
• Be flexible. If your child can’t or won’t eat
first thing in the morning, offer fruit juice
at home and pack a breakfast to go.
English muffins or bagels with peanut
butter, a low-fat cheese sandwich or
whole-wheat banana nut bread will travel
well. You can also ask if your child can
have breakfast at school-many school
cafeterias offer morning meals.
The best breakfasts include foods with
carbohydrates, proteins and fats. This type
of meal can satisfy hunger and maintain
blood sugar levels for hours. Sugary foods
cause a quick rise in blood sugar and
energy that fizzles out in about one hour.
The bottom line on breakfast
A morning meal gives kids an edge on
hunger, energy and brainpower. Even if it
means setting alarm clocks 20 minutes
early, find a way to make breakfast a
regular at your house-your kids aren’t
ready for school without it.
Less than 150 mg/dL
Children, young adults and older Americans can have high cholesterol.
Learn how to prevent high cholesterol and know what your cholesterol
levels mean.
September is National Cholesterol Education Month, a good time to get your
blood cholesterol checked and take steps to lower it if it is high. National
Cholesterol Education Month is also a good time to learn about lipid profiles
and about food and lifestyle choices that help you reach personal cholesterol
goals. Below you will find some information about cholesterol and a
summary of CDC programs that address cholesterol across the country.
How many Americans have high cholesterol?
More than 102 million American Adults (20 years or older) have total
cholesterol levels at or above 200 mg/dL, which is above healthy levels.
More than 35 million of these people have levels of 240 mg/dL or higher,
which puts them at high risk for heart disease.
What is cholesterol?
Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance found in your body and many
foods. Your body needs cholesterol to function normally and makes all
that you need. Too much cholesterol can build up in your arteries. After
a while, these deposits narrow your arteries, putting you at risk for heart
disease and stroke.
How do you know if your cholesterol is high?
High cholesterol usually doesn’t have any symptoms. As a result, many
people do not know that their cholesterol levels are too high. However,
doctors can do a simple blood test to check your cholesterol. High
cholesterol can be controlled through lifestyle changes or if it is not
enough, through medications. It’s important to check your cholesterol
levels. High cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease, the leading
cause of death in the United States.
How often should you have your cholesterol checked?
The National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) recommends that
adults aged 20 years or older have their cholesterol checked every 5 years.
Preventive guidelines for cholesterol screening among young adults differ,
but experts agree on the need to screen young adults who have other risk
factors for coronary heart disease: obesity, smoking, high blood pressure,
diabetes and family history
Less than half of young adults who have these risk factors don’t get
cholesterol screening even though up to a quarter of them have elevated
cholesterol.
A simple blood test called a lipoprotein profile can measure your total
cholesterol levels, including LDL (low-density lipoprotein or “bad”
cholesterol), HDL (high-density lipoprotein or “good” cholesterol) and
triglycerides. The following chart shows optimal lipid levels for adults:
4
Can children and adolescents have high cholesterol?
Yes. High cholesterol can develop in early childhood and adolescence and
your risk increases as your weight increases. In the United States, more
than one-fifth (20%) of youth aged 12-19 years have at least one abnormal
lipid level. It is important for children over 2 years of age to have their
cholesterol checked, if they are overweight/obese, have a family history
of high cholesterol, a family history of heart disease, diabetes, high blood
pressure or certain chronic condition (chronic kidney disease, chronic
inflammatory diseases, congenital heart disease and childhood cancer
survivorship.
The National Cholesterol Education Program has developed specific
recommendations about cholesterol treatment for people at increased
risk, such as those with a family history of high cholesterol or heart disease.
If you have high cholesterol, what can you do to lower it?
Your doctor may prescribe medications to treat your high cholesterol. In
addition, you can lower your cholesterol levels through lifestyle changes:
• Low-fat and high-fiber food (Eat more fresh fruits, fresh vegetables and
whole grains).
• For adults, getting at least 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate or 1 hour
and 15 minutes of vigorous physical activity a week. For those aged 6-17,
getting 1 hour or more of physical activity each day.
• Maintain a healthy weight.
• Don’t smoke or quit if you smoke.
CDC Programs That Address Cholesterol
National Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Program
Since 1998, CDC has funded state health departments’ efforts to reduce
the number of people with heart disease or stroke. Health departments in
41 states and the District of Columbia currently receive funding for these
activities. These programs promote policy and system level changes at the
state and community level to support heart-healthy and stroke-free living
and working conditions.
WISEWOMAN
The WISEWOMAN program helps women with little or no health insurance
reduce their risk for heart disease, stroke and other chronic diseases. The
program helps women aged 40 to 64 years quit smoking, improve their
diet and increase physical activity. WISEWOMAN also offers tests for high
blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. CDC funds 21 WISEWOMAN
projects in 19 states and two tribal organizations.
Lipid Standardization Program
CDC’s Environmental Health Laboratory serves as the world reference
laboratory for measuring cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density
lipoproteins and low-density lipoproteins. Doctors require accurate
measurements to diagnose and properly treat people with high
cholesterol levels. The laboratory helps ensure the quality of about 35
million cholesterol measurements made annually in the United States.
CFISD BRINGS SAFETY AND SECURITY TO
FOREFRONT WITH 2018-2019 ACTION PLAN
Following a summer of planning, the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD safety and
security committee unveiled its 2018-2019 Safety and Security Action
Plan at the Board of Trustees committee-of-the-whole meeting on Aug. 9 th .
Comprised of representatives of the CFISD leadership team, the committee
hosted a series of meetings throughout June and July to review current
security initiatives that are already in place as well as explore what
additional layers could be implemented for the district this year. Featuring
roundtable discussions with experts as well as input from all campus
principals and the Community Leadership Committee, the meetings
resulted in an action plan focused on prevention of, identification and
intervention of and response to potential security threats during a time
when the nationwide focus is on school safety.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s School and Firearm Safety Action Plan, released
on May 30 th , was used by the committee as a baseline to review school
safety and implement recommended strategies.
The following summary of the safety and security committee’s action plan
can be found in more detail on the district website under the “Safety for
All” block:
PREVENTION
The CFISD police department has increased its number of
commissioned police officers from 86 in 2017 to 108 for 2018-2019.
The department will also implement three K-9 units trained in
narcotics and nitrate detection. Two police officers will transition
into mental health officer positions to assist the guidance and
counseling and psychological services departments in addressing
mental health concerns on campuses.
Safety and security upgrades funded by the 2014 Bond Program
continue to roll out at campuses, including secured entry
vestibules, bullet-resistant glass, additional security cameras
and emergency call stations. Panic buttons will be installed in all
portable buildings in 2018-2019.
All students in grades 6-12 will be required to wear a student
ID badge during the instructional day and will join elementary
students in wearing the badges on board school buses. All school
visitors will be distinguished by a visitor badge issued at check-in.
Backpacks worn by secondary students on school property are
required to be clear backpacks. Belongings carried inside or outside
of the backpack are limited to no more than two non-transparent 6-
by 9-inch purse(s) or similar bag(s). Approved extracurricular bags
including instrument cases are permitted in the building but must
be stored in respective areas during the instructional day. Visitors
to Cy-Fair FCU and Pridgeon stadiums in 2018-2019 will be required
to limit bags to clear bags or a non-transparent 6-by-9-inch purse
or similar bag.
All campuses will implement procedures for limiting entry points
for faculty, students and visitors. The district will also continue to
explore the possibility of identifying exit-only doors and removing
door handles on certain doors. Food deliveries for students will be
prohibited by fast food delivery drivers.
IDENTIFICATION AND INTERVENTION
Campuses will continue to advertise the Cy-Fair Tipline for students, an
internal and anonymous reporting system. A visible button will be added
to each campus website for easy sharing with the CFPD and campus
administration. The CFPD will continue to work with the Houston Regional
Intelligence Service Center to identify potential threats on social media.
Two mental health intervention teams, each consisting of two licensed
professional counselors, a licensed specialist in school psychology and
a mental health school resource officer, have been developed to assist
students, administration and parents in developing a positive and
proactive plan for mental health. All teachers, counselors, district and
campus administrators, transportation and community programs staff
will undergo mental health assessment training prior to the start of the
school year. All elementary and secondary counselors will be trained on
completing threat assessment interviews.
RESPONSE
CFISD’s school safety and security committee will meet three times per
year and provide updates and reports to the Board of Trustees twice a
year. All campuses will continue to implement and practice emergency
operations plans, based on a template provided by the Texas School
Safety Center. All campus and district administrators will be trained in the
Standard Response Protocol and Standard Reunification Method prior to
the start of the school year.
All staff members will receive active shooter training prior to the start of the
school year, while all CFPD officers are required to complete active shooter
trainings such as ALERRT and ERASE as well as crisis intervention training.
A mental health crisis response team consisting of licensed behavior health
professionals has been formed to respond during critical incidents.
SPECIAL CHEERS NEEDS VOLUNTEERS
Special CHEERS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to
providing Occupational Therapy to children with special needs of all ages
living in and around the greater Houston area. Our facility is unique in that
we utilize animals, including horses, dogs, goats, pigs, lambs and rabbits
as an integral part of each child’s therapy treatment plan. Being a nonprofit
organization, we are constantly looking for extra help around the
farm. Therefore, Special CHEERS would like to welcome all high school
and college-aged students interested in working with both children and
animals to volunteer after school, on the weekends or seasonally (i.e.,
summer camp). Please call our director, Ms. Fritzi, at 713-983-0075, for
more information. A background check will be required of all individuals
applying for a volunteer position at our facility.
FOSTER CHILDREN:
PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent.
That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities
arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out
how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month.
Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help
prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long
course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council
for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s
BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses.
Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives
with hands-on community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see
www.ncjwhouston.org.
START THE NEW YEAR WITH A
NEW BEST FRIEND AND FAMILY MEMBER!
Loving Arms Pet Placement has an assortment of wonderful dogs and cats
hoping for their forever homes. We have all different types of small to large
dogs, mixed breeds and many wonderful cats to choose from. We are a
foster-based rescue for dogs and cats. If you are not ready to commit to
adopting a dog or cat permanently, the animals also need foster families.
Besides providing food, water and a safe place to sleep, foster families
socialize the animals so they are people friendly. Include the animal in
your daily home life inside your home. Get to know them as individuals so
you can share personality traits, likes/dislikes, anecdotes. Treat the animal
like your own and train him/her, if possible. Although you may feel sadness
when your foster animal is adopted, please know that your efforts helped
to prepare the cat or dog for his/her forever home. Visit Loving Arms Pet
Placement website at www.lovingarmspetplacement.com or visit us at
Cypress North | September 2018 21

Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects.
• Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead
wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis).
Correct with iron cheleates.
• Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal
around the roots.
• Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth.
Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September.
• Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect
populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures.
Diseases that have been dormant wake up.
- Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider
mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from
a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves.
- Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to
scale and mealybug.
• Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted.
• Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies.
• Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to
lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring.
• St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September.
Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot
of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter.
• Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass
that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for
biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4
inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a
bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and
makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The
larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt.
• When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring
brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for
yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in
the 80’s.
• Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want
the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of
October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the
trees are dormant.
• Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass
and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to
be put out starting in mid-August.
APPLE DUMPLING
You could make this on National Apple Dumpling Day September 17 th !
INGREDIENTS:
1 pastry for double-crust pie
6 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and cored
1/2 cup butter
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
3 cups water
2 cups white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Butter a 9x13 inch pan.
On a lightly floured surface, roll pastry into a large rectangle, about 24 by 16 inches. Cut
into 6 square pieces. Place an apple on each pastry square with the cored opening facing
upward. Cut butter into 8 pieces. Place 1 piece of butter in the opening of each apple; reserve
remaining butter for sauce. Divide brown sugar between apples, poking some inside each
cored opening and the rest around the base of each apple. Sprinkle cinnamon and nutmeg
over the apples.
With slightly wet fingertips, bring one corner of pastry square up to the top of the apple, then
bring the opposite corner to the top and press together. Bring up the two remaining corners
and seal. Slightly pinch the dough at the sides to completely seal in the apple. Repeat with
the remaining apples. Place in prepared baking dish.
In a saucepan, combine water, white sugar, vanilla extract and reserved butter. Place over
medium heat and bring to a boil in a large saucepan. Boil for 5 minutes or until sugar is
dissolved. Carefully pour over dumplings.
Bake in preheated oven for 50 to 60 minutes. Place each apple dumpling in a dessert bowl
and spoon some sauce over the top.
