Norwood’s
New Fire Chief
by Donna Lane
Captain George Morrice,
a 29-year veteran of the Norwood
Fire Department, was selected
to lead the Norwood Fire
Department. He will be sworn
in on September 4.
The journey to find a new
fire chief began in early March
of this year when current Fire
Chief Anthony Greeley announced
his intent to retire.
Town Manager Tony Mazzucco
went right to work and
met with all four groups of the
fire department and their captains
to seek input on the future
of the department.
Meanwhile, Michelle Pizzi
O’Brien, the Town of Norwood’s
Human Resource Director,
began the process of
finding the perfect candidate.
She posted the notice of vacancy
on the Town’s website and
numerous other social media
and professional associations,
including the International Association
of Fire Chiefs, the
Norfolk County Association of
Fire chiefs, the Massachusetts
Association of Fire Chiefs and
the International Association of
Fire Chiefs.
To review the resumes and
letters that were to come, a preliminary
screening committee
was needed. Mazzucco wanted
the committee to consist of
people who had expertise in
both public administration and
fire service.
“There are a number of
challenges facing the fire department,”
Mazzucco said.
“Fire service is changing. There
are more and more Emergency
Medical Services calls coming
in and that needs to be managed
as well.”
The screening committee
included William Scovle, retired
former fire chief of Westwood;
Michael Liotta, retired former
Paul Flanagan, Winthrop Fire
There were 30 applicants for
the job, some out of state and several
internal candidates. The committee
conducted interviews and
narrowed the pool of candidates
to three finalists.
Mazzucco conducted interviews
of the three finalists, along
with Assistant General Manager
“There was real quality talent
that applied for this position,”
Mazzucco said. “All three were
solid, dynamic candidates. Each
gave very thoughtful, logical answers
to all questions that were
posed.”
In the end, it was Morrice’s vision
for the department and his
solid strategic plan that were the
deciding factors.
“All things considered, George
is the best candidate to take us to
the next level and build the future
of the department,” Mazzucco
said.
So, who is George Morrice
and what is his strategic plan for
the department? That’s not easy
to answer, since Morrice is not
comfortable talking about himself
or his accomplishments. He does
say he is happily married with four
children and that family is very important
to him. He describes himself
as a “family man.” Anything
else?
He grew up in Norwood, went
to Norwood schools, graduated
from the University of Massachusetts
at Amherst and is a licensed
electrician.
“I didn’t plan to go into the fire
service,” Morrice said. “I took the
civil service test at the insistence
of my mother and got my EMT
license. Sometime later I got a call
from Fire Chief Thomas Barry
offering me a job as a firefighter.”
Morrice has never looked back!
“I had really good mentors
over the years,” Morrice continued.
“They taught the practical
skills needed to be a firefighter.
For example, they would set up
situations in buildings that were
slated to be
torn down
or rehabbed,
showing the
proper way
to knock
down a door
or cut a hole
in the floor.
It was great in-house training. I
also got to take classes around the
state. At that time, there was no
Fire Academy.”
Morrice is currently the shift
commander of Group 1, where
he organizes personnel for operations.
His job requires that he assign
14 people to two fire engines,
a ladder truck, two ambulances
(one with advanced paramedics,
the other with basic EMTs) and
the command vehicle. He is currently
shadowing Chief Greeley to
learn the administrative aspects of
the chief ’s job as well. His frontline
experience, both with fighting
fires and providing emergency
medical services, will be a great
asset in moving the department
forward.
Asked about the strategic plan
mentioned by Mazzucco, Morrice
declined to answer.
“I don’t want to put anything
out to the newspaper before discussing
it with members of the
department,” Morrice said.
Fair enough. However, he was
willing to discuss some of the challenges
he sees coming.
“There are a number of senior
officers and a department
chief
who are retiring
soon. Within the
next two years,
we are going to
lose a lot of experience.
I want
to work toward
a seamless transition
so we can
continue to serve and support the
people in Norwood.”
He also sees the rapid changes
in technology as both a challenge
and a vehicle to meet future challenges.
“We have a great EMS program
here in Norwood,” Morrice
said. “We could grow that.
We need to continually improve
training, learn new skills and new
methods of doing things.”
He also talked about revamping
the dispatch center using input
from current dispatchers, and
forming a committee to design
features on the new engine that
the department will purchase, scaling
down the size of the vehicle,
and adding technology improvements.
He would like to improve access
to grant money, possibly sending
two firefighters to a course on
grant writing that the Fire Academy
now offers.
“With grant money, we would
ultimately be able to improve
equipment and systems,” Morrice
said.
Throughout our interview,
Morrice repeatedly stated that
“We’re here to help people and
serve this community.”
When asked what he would
like to achieve during his tenure as
fire chief, Morrice answered confidently.
“Every chief brings something
that makes the department better.
I’d like to leave the department
better than I found it,” Morrice
said.
A Guide for Going Back to School
Kara Shea
With Summer coming to a
close and the school year fast approaching,
a common struggle
that many families face, is getting
children back into a routine.
In order to ease the transition
from fun in the sun to studying
in school, look no further but this
article. Below, are a few tips and
tricks for making going back to
school a better experience for the
whole family.
Writing down a set schedule for
morning and night time activities
could aide in the transition. According
to The Child Mind Institute,
“having an easy-to-reference
schedule, maybe with pictures, can
engage your child and provide a
wonderful visual guide for what
they need to do next.” Checking
off the steps mentally could ultimately
mean less of a hassle for
parents. Instead of repeating different
actions over-and-over, the
child will already be equipped
with the information needed to
get ready.
Speaking of being equipped,
back to school shopping is usually
a must for families. Organizing
school supplies is a fun and
exciting part of the experience
for kids too, because picking out
different colors and patterns to
express themselves can be extremely
rewarding. So, take them
along next time you decide to go.
It could make them more eager to
go back to school, which means
less of a fight when that first day
rolls around. If you’re looking
for a good list of supplies, check
your school’s website. Here you
can usually find all the requirements
for each grade. Norwood.
k12.ma.us is the Norwood Public
Schools website, and it is filled with
a vast amount of information for
each grade; and it can all be found
at the click of a button. However,
one can never go wrong with a
backpack, pencils/pens, binders/
folders, white lined paper/notebook,
and a highlighter or two, as
these are the bare necessities when
it comes to heading back to school.
If you don’t want to spend a lot on
supplies, search in Dollar Stores,
Westwood Insurance
Home Auto Business
or even bundle sales at places like
Target or Walmart.
One item middle and high
schoolers will not have to purchase/update
are computers.
Beginning this year, Norwood
Public schools is deploying the
1:1 Chromebook Initiative. Every
student in grades six through
twelve will receive a Chromebook
computer to compliment their
educational experience. More
information will be given to students/parents
at the beginning of
the school year, including the loan
agreement, which will be needed
to receive a device. For more information,
visit npschromebooksupport@norwood.k12.ma.us
Ultimately, going back to
school can be a fun experience
for all. All one has to do is be a
little organized. School is a place
to play with friends, learn, build
new relationships, and have endless
experiences. It is where children
learn who they want to be
when they get older, and who they
are now- and that is something
to look forward to. Thus, instead
of dreading going back to school,
embrace all that it can offer to
each and every family, and get
prepared for a great year ahead.
How A Financial Plan Can Help You Achieve Your Bucket List
We spend a lot of time daydreaming
about and planning how
to achieve our goals. Charting a
new career, creating a bucket list,
helping a loved one reach success
and other goals all have financial
implications that deserve consideration.
This is where a financial
plan comes in. The goal of a plan
is to lay out what success looks like
to you, and how you can position
your finances to help you get there.
A well-crafted financial plan is:
1. Personalized. Your plan
should contain the details of
your current financial situation
and outline your life
goals, both near-term and
extending into retirement.
Using actual data can ground
your plan in reality and help
you see what you need to do to
stay on track. Generally, there
are four areas you should address:
• Covering your essentials.
Essentials are the monthly
expenses that keep your life
running, such as mortgage
payments, utility bills and
insurance premiums. Your
financial plan should provide
advice and solutions
to cover your day-to-day
needs while also providing
for your necessary living
expenses in retirement.
• Maintaining your lifestyle.
Lifestyle refers to
the things you want to do
and how you want to live,
today and in the future. If
you dream of purchasing
a second home or retiring
in a warmer climate, your
financial plan should quantify
the costs of these goals
and outline action steps to
help you achieve them.
Stop in and see our full line of Home Appliances
WE SERVICE WHAT WE SELL
• Preparing for the unexpected.
Life is not without
its surprises. Your financial
roadmap should include
contingency plans to help
you stay on track financially
when something unexpected
happens to you
or a loved one. This may
include establishing an
emergency fund and insurance
coverage to help offset
damaged property or lost
wages.
• Leaving a legacy. Your
legacy is the impact you
make on people, charities
and causes that are important
to you – now, in retirement
and after your death.
Key components are naming
beneficiaries on key accounts,
building charitable
giving into your financial
life and estate planning to
determine how you want
your assets to be distributed
to your heirs.
2. Comprehensive. All the bases
of your financial life should
be covered within your plan,
from insurance to investments,
cash flow, retirement, estate
planning and everything in
between. Include your financial
obligations and goals, no
matter how big or small they
are. Seeing your full financial
picture in one place makes it
easier to adjust course or test
scenarios as your priorities
change down the road.
3. Dynamic. A financial plan
is not a static document you
create once and never revisit.
Rather, it puts a stake in the
ground that can inform future
decisions. Your financial plan
should be updated as your
life goals and circumstances
change.
4. Trackable. Without a plan,
it is difficult to determine if
you will be prepared to meet
your anticipated retirement
date, whether you have sufficient
sums saved to put a child
through college, or if you’ve
taken proper steps to protect
your family. In this way, your
financial plan can help you
stay accountable to your financial
future.
Roger Cummings
5. Useful, no matter your net
worth. Turning your goals
into reality without a financial
plan is a lot like driving in
an unfamiliar place without a
GPS. Regardless of how much
you make or have saved, a financial
plan can help you be
strategic with your dollars.
If you have not yet had a comprehensive
financial plan prepared
for you and your family, consider
working with an advisor who can
help you get started. Together, you
can identify doable steps to help
you work toward your financial
dreams.
Young Men - Young Marines
New Norwood
recruits receive a
moving sendoff.
By R. Christopher Cook
Late in July, the Norfolk County
Marine Corps League held a Bon
Voyage party at the VFW, at 193
Dean St. in Norwood. Not your
typical Bon Voyage party, this
celebration was honoring seven
young high school graduates who
are joining the US Marine Corps.
Young men who could not walk
into a local bar and order a beer
or in this state could not even walk
into a convenience store and buy
a pack of cigarettes. Yet at their
young age, they have signed a legal
document committing the next
four years of their lives to protecting
their neighbors and their
country. How inspiring!
The Master of Ceremonies
for the event was former Marine
Bill Maguire, and there were a
number of other former Marines
attending the celebration. As you
know, there is no such thing as an
X Marine. They were there to
welcome and honor these new recruits
and offer some wisdom and
advice. Their memories and stories
of past experiences and times
gone by held everyone in awe. For
only they knew these new recruits
in a few short weeks will be off to
Paris Island where their lives will
change forever. They will go there
as boys and leave there as US Marines
with a code like no others.
“Oorah!”
I had the chance to talk with
each one of these young fellows
and they amazed me. Most
teens I meet today are clueless.
They don’t know where they are
or where they are going. If you
meet them as a clerk in a store,
they couldn’t make change for a
five dollar bill if the computer or
register didn’t tell them what to
return to you. If you took their
cell phones away, they would not
only be lost but probably start into
withdrawal. These kids were different
and mature already. Each
one knew who they were and what
they were after. One of them said
he wanted to eventually go on the
police force and having military
experience would be a giant leap
in that direction. Another said
something very similar, only he
wanted to become a firefighter.
One of them had the most astute
understanding of his own self and
completely floored me with his answer
to my question, ‘why do you
want to become a Marine.’ His
answer was, ‘I was just an average
high school student, my grades
were OK but not great, and since
I’m not the college type I knew I
needed a head start in life and I
could use the discipline.’ They will
Pictures left to right: Aiden Fitzgerald, Walpole, Colin Plasco, Norwood, Mathew Spellman, Norwood, Joe
Derba, Foxboro, Aiden Kelly, Foxboro, Adam Colella, Franklin and Kyle Hume, Bellingham
probably make this kid a General
some day, because at the tender
age of 18, he already has a battle
plan for life.
They brought in a real Marine
Drill Instructor and he put on
quite a show. He lined the boys
up in the front of the room and
gave them and everyone else a
taste of what they were in for. He
got up close to each and every one
of them, shouting in their face
‘your momma’s not going to help
you now.’
‘And that hair has got to go…
your head is going to look like a
baby’s bottom.’ A few of them he
made do push ups because they
did not answer him ‘Yes Drill Sergeant.’
That brought back memories
for the older veterans. Near
the end of the evening, Staff Sergeant
Derek Edrington, one of the
men who recruited some of these
young men, gave a rousing speech
and confirmed the patriotism of
everyone in the room.
Two of the recruits had their
grandfathers there. Former Marines
themselves, Norwood Town
Selectman Bill Plasco welcomed
his grandson Colin Plasco, and
Russ Walton, Past Commander of
the Norwood Post #2452, wanted
to welcome his grandson Mathew
Spellman. And of course there
were many other parents and
grandparents there proud as could
be, because the old saying is true,
“The apple doesn’t fall far from
the tree.”
MONDAY, September
10, 6:30 p.m., in the Simoni
Room, of the Norwood Morrill
Memorial Library. This
artist will be Rob Franco. Mr.
Franco lives in Natick and
his passion for art began at
visit a neighborhood artist in
Newport, RI, which led to his
US Air Force and continued
in his life as a graphic artist in
the Boston Area.
Mr. Franco’s fascination
with the ocean and other
bodies of water continues to
inspire his work as he searches
for subjects to paint in New
The First Time
By R. Christopher Cook
Do you remember last fall, when a certain few NFL players were aggravating
and upsetting us all? They were refusing to stand for our National Anthem.
Some of them actually taking a knee to demonstrate their distaste for our country.
Some kind of a demonstration to say black lives matter. These prima
donnas, with their multimillion dollar contracts to play a professional sport,
thought they were teaching us a lesson: when they couldn’t play a game without
a playbook and plenty of practice. Well, usually I refrain from writing any kind
of political commentary; however this makes me want to speak up. I know as
well as most Americans do that black lives matter, so do white lives and red lives
and brown and yellow ones too; if you believe in Martians and Leprechauns,
then green lives matter too. They all matter. This is a very small planet and we
all have to learn to get along. If these men actually had any point at all they sure
chose the wrong forum to put it forward. What were they thinking?
Did you ever wonder about the first time? The first time they played our
National Anthem before a sporting event. I wondered how this tradition began.
After doing a little research, here is what I learned. It started one hundred years
ago in a place called Fenway Park in Boston. The event was the fourth game
of the 1918 World Series, between the Boston Red Sox and the Chicago Cubs.
Now it is true a few days earlier, when the first three games of the series were
played in Chicago, they played the National Anthem during the seventh inning
stretch, but Boston one upped them by moving the song to the pre game activities,
and it’s been like that ever since. The Red Sox won the series 4-2 but it was
the last time they would in that century.
Some other interesting facts about the 1918 fall classic were that Woodrow
Wilson was president at the time and World War I was raging. The government
had started drafting major leaguers to go to war and had ordered baseball owners
to end the regular season by Labor Day, so it was the only time in history
that the entire World Series was played in September.
Fred Thomas, who played third base for the Red Sox, was already in the US
Navy, but since his commanding officer was not only a baseball fan but a true
fanatic, he allowed Fred to go on furlough so he could play in the games. Perhaps
it was Fred’s reaction to hearing the first few notes of the “Star-Spangled
Banner” that really excited the crowd. Upon hearing the tune he immediately
turned to face the flag, stood at attention and snapped a military salute. His
example brought the roaring crowds to their feet and thunderous applause.
It was the last time Babe Ruth wore a Red Sox uniform in a post season
game. And of course, his performance was not only outstanding and memorable,
but another one for the record books. He pitched sixteen consecutive
scoreless innings, another remarkable feat from a remarkable man.
Perhaps the most interesting and funny part of the story is that baseball
and the American public knew years before the Government that the “Star-
Spangled Banner” was our National Anthem. It was thirteen years later in
1931 that Congress finally declared it so. Maybe that is why we call Baseball
America’s Game.
Pet Corner
Meet Snowbelle!
Snowbelle was
abandoned at a feral
feeding station behind
a school. One of Snowbelles pictures
shows how she appears to be waiting
on top of the feral shelter for her
person to come back and bring her
back to her cozy home and indoor
meals. After a short time at the feral
area, she was rescued and brought
to a vet where she was spayed, vaccinated
and tested for FIV and feline
leukemia. She is negative for those 2
conditions and the vet's assessment
was that she is between 3 and 4 years
old, an indoor kitty and in overall
good health. Note her large double
front paws. She is quite pretty.
Snowbelle is in foster at this time
and is available for adoption and eagerly
awaiting a cozy, FOREVER
home. The foster says she is a lovesweet
and affectionate.
Meet Pretty Pretty
Pretty pretty is
back in Baystate
foster. She has had
quite the adventure
over her young life. The first home
that adopted Pretty decided to have
this lovely, healthy cat euthanized
because of issues with another cat
in the home. The vet would not do
that and got in touch with us for rehoming.
The second adoption was
to a family and Pretty pretty was
given away to a friend after only a
short stay. Most recently she was
relinquished to an open admission
shelter that determined she was a
Baystate cat and that shelter contacted
us. Now Pretty pretty, is in a
Baystate foster home and the foster
mom has not seen a single reason
why this pretty girl has been shuttled
from place to place.
Foster mom says this cat enjoys
her active family household. Pretty
pretty loves to be in the room where
people are-"she loves to sit and hang
with us". Sometimes Pretty just likes
to sit in a room and watch the activity
around her or enjoy a sunny spot.
There have been no negative interactions
with the family pets (cats and
dogs). The foster thinks the best situation
would be an active family with
older children. Please consider this
lovely girl for your family and finally
her FOREVER home.
Meet Finbar!
Finbar is a neutered
male, 4 to 6
years old. He's a bit
shy and prefers to be
an "only" cat. Finbar would do best
in a home with an experienced cat
owner. He is feisty, the kind of cat
who will purr in ecstasy for 3 pats
but then let you know he's all done
with patting. . He uses a litter box
and scratching post faithfully. Kind
of a sedentary guy, he loves sleeping
beside someone and watching cats
on You Tube clips. He hasn't had
any exposure to young children, and
he tends to hide whenever there's any
type of commotion. He is currently
in foster but needs a forever home of
his own!
This important volunteer base if
so important to move our cats into
new homes…..and, it can be done
from ANYWHERE. Everything
needed is done on the computer
phone calls, following up, and can
be busy one week and no action the
next. We try to work in pairs to help
each other as everyone has varying
Dear Walter,
I’m glad you are able to
enjoy the local trails and fields
and even, mucky waters but I
always suggest limiting your
ingestion if these waters. Outdoor
water sources are loaded
with bacteria and parasites
and can do a number on your
GI tract. Additionally, be sure
your humans keep you up to
date on your vaccines to keep
you safe from diseases you can
get from puddles and shallow
waters frequented by wildlife.
Just an FYI.
As for ticks, make sure
you are current with a veterinarian
grade flea and tick
product. Though all products
work differently, please know
that tick-Bourne diseases, like
Lyme disease, are transmitted
when ticks attached for 36 to
48 hours or more before the
Lyme disease bacterium can
be transmitted. So the presence
of ticks on your pet does
not always mean the diseases
have been transmitted.
Take Care,
Sheryl Ardunio’s 1st PMC
Norwood Sports
By Christopher Tremblay
Over a decade ago Norwood’s
Sheryl Ardunio stumbled upon
the Pan Mass Challenge while
enjoying the summer at the family
cottage in Onset. For the
past 12 years, Ardunio and
her mother
cheered on
the riders that
went through
the Cape Cod
town. This year
was a very different
story. Ardunio
was not going to be
able to stand along
the downtown
streets of Onset
and cheer the bikers
along as she had
done in the past; this
year she was one of those bikers.
When her father passed away
from bone marrow leukemia as
well as enduring kidney cancer,
the Norwood resident knew that
she had to support Dana Farber,
which had been so good to her father;
she joined her friends from
Team Wow. This past August,
Ardunio took part in her very first
Pan Mass Challenge,
opting for the two-day
ride starting at Wellesley
and finishing in
Provincetown (a total
of 168 miles).
Although donations
can still be
collected through
October 1, the
first-time rider has
already surpassed
the mandatory
$4,900 requirement
pulling
in $14,000 so far. Originally,
Ardunio thought it would be cool
to be a heavy hitter and bring in
$8000, but this is above her wildest
imagination.
“I was hoping that I could
reach that $8,000 plateau so I
just kept pushing,” Ardunio said.
“The donations just kept coming
in. There are a lot of generous
people that supported me and I
was so very excited.”
The night before the race, the
Norwood resident began to feel
the anxiousness of the event. And
they continued right up until the
morning of the race.
“The nerves were more logistics;
I could have only one bag, no
more than 20 pounds (sheets, pillows,
etc.) and did I have the right
things,” Ardunio said. “When I
pulled into Babson College Saturday
morning, the butterflies really
started, but as soon as I got on my
bike and began the first leg (87
miles), everything went away and
it was a calm ride.”
Calm until the midway point.
Around 10:30 a.m. that morning,
Ardunio was meeting up with the
rest of Team Wow in Dighton-Rehoboth
to have lunch, and as they
were parking their bikes, it began
to sprinkle. The slight rain didn’t
bother them at first, but once they
were out of the elements and
under the tents, Mother Nature
decided to have some fun and
the skies opened up. The excessive
amount of water never let
up the rest of the day. Following
their lunch, riders were hoping to
wait out the rain, but it just wasn’t
going to be, so they took to the
roads once again.
“With it raining, now I had to
be much more tentative with my
riding and be careful when hitting
Pictured: Ardunio with her mom, Cheryl
my brakes, as I could hydroplane
on the water at any second,” Ardunio
said. “I had trained in a
little rain, nut nothing like this. I
was absolutely drenched and covered
in mud from the bikes in front
of me. I also had to make sure my
mouth was closed whenever there
was a bike in front of me so that I
wouldn’t be eating whatever their
bike kicked up.”
As Ardunio continued to ride
in the rain, she had two thoughts
going through her mind. First,
her father had always had subpar
luck and now that he had left
the earth he passed it along to
her, and second, that the rain that
was pouring down on her was her
PMC baptism.
Eventually, Team Wow made
it to Bourne to stop for the night.
Two miles prior to the stop, Ardunio
stopped at Onset, the same
place she used to cheer all the riders,
for a quick visit with her family.
“When I pulled into Onse,t
half of the neighborhood was
standing in the pouring rain to
cheer me on.,” Ardunio said. “It
was a very emotional experience
and I just wanted to jump off my
bike and give my mom a hug.”
After a 20 minute visit, she was
back on her bike heading over to
Bourne to take a shower and enjoy
the night’s meal before getting
some sleep for the second half of
her journey.
Although sleep was a priority
for her to be able to continue
on her second leg of the ride into
Provincetown, it was not going to
be easy to come by. Ardunio figures
she got about four hours of
sleep before she was awakened for
the morning.
“I was sleeping on the top bunk
in a room with no air conditioning
and my roommates, who I did not
know at all, got up at 3 a.m. to get
ready for the day,” Ardunio said.
“At that point, I couldn’t fall back
to sleep so I was up for the day.
I slowly packed everything and
brushed my teeth numerous times
before we took off at 5:30.”
Although very foggy that second
morning, Ardunio said it was
pretty cool to ride into the canal
and over the Bourne Bridge.
Eventually the fog burned off
and the rest of the ride was a perfectly
sunny day. With the warm
sun bearing down on their bodies,
Team Wow rolled into the
Wellfleet rest stop and was able to
thoroughly enjoy the ice couches.
Despite riding most of the first
day in torrential downpours, it was
a weekend that Ardunio will never
forget.
“I had a blast and cannot wait
until next year,” Ardunio said with
excitement. “It was so amazing to
be on the other side after cheering
the riders on for the past 12 years.
There are no words to describe
the feeling.”

Norwood Enters It's First Year in the Tri-Valley League
By Christopher Tremblay
As the first bell rings this September
to welcome the students
the 2018-19 school year at Norwood
High School, it will bring
about a change of scenery for the
Mustang athletes. After spending
many a year in the Bay State Conference,
Norwood will be begin
playing sports this fall in the Tri
Valley League.
“Obviously not everyone
thought that it was a good idea
to change leagues, but the general
consensus found that it would
be beneficial to make the move,”
Norwood Athletic Director John
Longley said. “I think it’s going
to be an exciting year for all of
our programs. People are excited
about the changes and the new rivalries
we’re going to make.”
One of the biggest reasons
Norwood looked into leaving the
BSC was its lack of success and inability
to compete with the much
larger schools in the league. Over
the three years prior to looking
into moving, the Mustangs have
only won 33 % of all the games
they played over the three sporting
seasons during the school years. In
addition, Norwood has only been
able to capture 6 Herget Championships
in the BSC (softball had
grabbed three, while the baseball
team had two and boys basketball
had the final title).
During the fall seasons, Norwood
found themselves with an
overall record of 106-305-15 (28.8
winning percentage) with field
hockey being the only winning
team at 42-13-6. Winter teams
saw a small increase with a 118-
244-14 record winning at a 32%
rate and spring teams finished at
146 – 261 (35.87%). Teams with
winning records included girls
basketball at 34-30; baseball (38-
26) and softball (51-13) during the
spring
Longley believes the lack of
success came from the increasing
enrollment numbers at the majority
of the other schools in the
BSC, while Norwood was one of
a handful that remained flat.
“When competing against
teams like Natick and Wellesley,
who have 600 more kids than we
have, twice a year,” it makes it
difficult, the Norwood AD said.
“Over the last 15 years, their numbers
have continued to increase
while our numbers have basically
stayed the same, which was a huge
contribution in looking to move.”
In 1989, the BSC had 12
teams, with five of them in excessive
of a 1000 students; Brookline
(1806) and Newton North (1610)
led the way. As of 2017, every
team in the league increased considerably
while only two teams,
Norwood and Dedham, experiences
declining numbers. During
the time span, the average increase
in enrollment for the teams in the
league was 48.5 %, with Newton
North increasing 32% and Needham
66 %.
The average school enrollment
in Tri Valley League in 2017 was
779.2 students, with 7 of the 11
schools having between 700 and
1000 students. Hopkinton is the
largest school in the league with a
total of 1109 students. Millis holds
the distinction of being the smallest
TVL venue with a mere 390
students, but despite being small,
has been able to secure State
Championships in multiple sports.
Not only is Norwood entering
a league in which they find
themselves compatible in terms
of numbers, the Mustangs will
not find themselves in as many
long bus rides. The average distance
from Norwood to its new
TVL foes is 13 miles with Norton
Norwood Sports
and Hopkinton being the furthest
away at 22 miles.
As Norwood enters the TVL
following fellow former BSC foe
Dedham, who jumped to the
league last fall, the league will
break into two divisions: Medfield,
Norton, Hopkinton, Holliston,
Westwood and Norwood will be
in the large division, while Ashland,
Bellingham, Dedham, Millis,
Medway and Dover-Sherborn will
make up the small division.
During the football season, the
Mustangs will still hook up with
Dedham on Thanksgiving Day
as a non-league contest being that
they are both in different divisions
within the league. Longley noted
that Norwood has been able to
secure games against neighboring
Walpole in just about every sport.
Norwood is hoping that the
change of scenery will allow its
athletes to exercise their abilities
on the fields and courts while bring
success back to the high school. As
the fall season gets underway, we
soon find out if it was the proper
move.
“Over the last year, people have
come to except the move and are
looking forward to the new opportunities
and challenges. They
are also interested to see how we
do” Longley said. “The TVL is
a great league, but in order to be
competitive you need to have great
teams with hard working athletes;
nothing changes just by changing
leagues.”
Highlights July '18 Norfolk
County Real Estate Numbers
While residential and commercial
real estate transactions
crept slowly higher for the month
of July, 2018, the average sales
price of Norfolk County property
remains as hot as the summer's
weather.
"During the month of July,
a total of 1,796 residential and
commercial properties were sold
in Norfolk County, representing
a modest 2% increase year over
year,’ Register O'Donnell noted.
“This small growth in sales activity,
contrasting with the significant
increases seen in total dollar sales
volume and average sales price for
both residential and commercial
properties, clearly demonstrates
the extremes of the market."
For the month of July, total real
estate sales volume was $1.06 billion,
a 33% increase compared to
July, 2017. Also, the average sales
price, again for both residential
and commercial properties, was
$835,316, a 29% increase compared
to the previous year.
"Industry observers are seeing
sellers getting their asking price
and in some cases, even more,”
Register O’Donnell said. “This
data strongly points to the continuing
competition amongst prospective
buyers for a very limited
pool of real estate inventory."
Lending activity for July decreased
by 4% countywide. A total
of 2,309 mortgages were recorded
during the month compared to
2,407 recorded in July 2017.
"It would appear rising interest
rates are causing consumers
to pause when borrowing money
for big ticket expenditure items,"
Register O'Donnell said.
An aberration in the July data
was the steep decrease in total
residential and commercial borrowing
which fell by 79% to $992
million. However, this major dropoff
can be largely attributed to a
$1.6 billion mortgage taken out
against a commercial property on
the Weymouth and Quincy line in
July 2017.
On the consumer front, July
also saw a slight 3% increase in the
number of Homesteads recorded
from the same time last year.
"A Homestead is an important
consumer protection tool that provides
limited protection against
the forced sale of a homeowner's
primary residence to satisfy unsecured
debt up to $500,000," Register
O'Donnell noted.
During July, 2018, there were
small increases seen in foreclosure
activity. A total of 20 foreclosure
deeds were recorded during the
month compared to 18 in July,
2017. In addition, 38 Notice to
Foreclose Mortgage recordings,
the first step in the foreclosure
process, were filed versus 34 year
over year.
"We continue to watch closely
the foreclosure numbers here
in Norfolk County," Register
O’Donnell said.
The Norfolk County Registry
of Deeds continues to partner
with Quincy Community Action
Programs at (617) 479-8181 x-376
and Neighbor Works Southern
Mass at (508) 598-0950 to help
anyone who has received a Notice
to Foreclose Mortgage from
a lending institution. Another
option is to contact the Massachusetts
Attorney General's Consumer
Advocacy and Response
Division (CARD) at (617) 727-
"Norfolk County continues
to mirror eastern Massachusetts
when it comes to limited real estate
inventory, resulting in higher housing
costs,” Register O'Donnell
concluded. “The reduced lending
numbers also tell us that consumers
are looking at the impact of
higher interest rates before making
major purchases, especially in the
area of real estate."
Norwood Inventory Rises Slightly
By Bella Caggiano
For the town of Norwood, lack of inventory has
been an ongoing problem mirroring Norfolk County
and actually the state of Massachusetts. If you talked
with potential homebuyers or local Realtors, you
would likely hear, there is just not a lot of properties
to consider and compare. That statistic, however,
could be experiencing a slight change.
The number of available listings in Norwood actually
increased in year over year statistics, with 19 for
sale on August 18, 2017, compared to 22 on August
18, 2018.

It depends. The right answer in
your case will depend on a number
of key factors. These include,
among others, your income and
assets, your attitude toward risk,
whether you have access to an
employer-sponsored plan at work,
the age at which you plan to retire,
and your projected expenses
during retirement. But it's possible
to lay down some guidelines that
may be of help to you.
The conventional wisdom has
traditionally been that you should
invest aggressively when you're
young and then move gradually
toward a more conservative approach.
By the time you retired,
you would probably end up with a
portfolio made up mostly of highgrade
bonds and other low-risk
investments. However, the retirement
landscape has changed dramatically
in the past 20 years or so.
As a result, many of our basic assumptions
about retirement planning
have been overturned.
The dwindling number of
traditional pension plans and
concerns about Social Security
have led people to take greater
responsibility for their own retirement.
Investing more aggressively
over the long term has become
common as they need to build the
largest retirement nest egg they
possibly can. In fact, many people
these days primarily use growth
vehicles (e.g., certain stocks and
mutual funds) for their investment
portfolios and tax-deferred
retirement plans (e.g., 401(k)s and
IRAs), though the proportion of
stocks may still be reduced as they
near retirement.
Other factors have changed the
way we think about and invest for
retirement as well. People tend to
retire younger, live longer, and do
more during retirement than they
used to. With the likelihood that
you will have well over 20 years of
activity to fund, it may be a good
idea to invest more aggressively
for retirement than previous generations
did. And there's no reason
to switch over to fixed-income securities
completely upon reaching
retirement, especially with interest
rates at historic lows. Many of us
in the financial planning business
suggest that you keep a suitably
balanced portfolio, including some
of your assets in growth-oriented
investments, even after you retire.
Don't forget to carefully consider
a mutual fund's investment
objectives, risks, fees, and expenses,
which can be found in
the prospectus available from the
fund. Read it carefully before investing.
All investing involves risk,
including the possible loss of principal,
and there can be no assurance
that any investment strategy
will be successful.
Four Points Sheraton Norwood Holds 12th Annual
Halloween Costume Drive for Boston Children’s Hospital
Accepting New Costumes &
Accessories until Oct.16, 2018
Four Points by Sheraton Norwood,
the area’s premier hospitality,
dining and events venue, today
announced it will host its 12th Annual
Halloween Costume Drive
for Boston Children’s Hospital.
Between now and October 16th,
the community is invited to drop
off new (non-scary, non-violent)
costumes and accessories, which
will be grouped and sorted by
type and size and delivered to the
hospital in time for all children receiving
treatment at Children’s to
dress for and enjoy the holiday.
“Charity is a core component
of the Four Points by Sheraton’s
values,” said Shoumala Ghosh,
Director of Sales & Marketing
at the hotel. “Halloween is very
much a children’s holiday, and it
is coming up sooner than people
realize. Our hope is that our community
will rally again this year
and drop off new costumes to help
lift the spirits of children fighting
so hard to get well.”
The community is welcome to
join the hotel in making Halloween
a special day for the children
at Boston Children’s Hospital by
donating even the smallest outfit
that can help them find cheer during
what can be a frightful time.
To keep the donation process
simple, there is a drop-off area
in the lobby of the Four Points
by Sheraton Norwood Hotel and
Conference Center, which is located
at 1125 Boston Providence
