Nathan’s advice to his son, “Keep your eyes and ears open. That’s what you need to have going out into the world now. Also, there are a million choices available, [I] hope you make a million right choices on a day to day basis I give Noah the opportunity to ask his father a question. Noah: I always wanted to know what has made you been able to stay in the music industry for so long? Some people, they fall off and work can seem slow. What allows you to keep surviving this industry that has changed so much? Nathan: That’s an excellent question and it kind of reflects what my original goal was when I started almost 40 years ago in this town where I didn’t want to be just the flavor of the month, come in and go out of style. I’ve really concentrated on longevity as being key to what I do. And longevity means not only that you’re playing but relationships that get established that continue on and on. So it’s almost about every part of life again. It gets back to the balance of playing and then being in the service. At the same time, I feel like I’ve been very blessed – whatever is happening in my life, I realize is a great blessing for me and my family. If we stay in service, and grateful, it serves us well. I also feel like, whether it’s 250,000 people or 65,000 that I played for just a few weeks ago at Hyde Park with Eric Clapton or 60 people, it’s all the same. It’s all
important. Whether it’s at the White House which I’ve played in many times or Royal Albert Hall, Carnegie Hall, or Mr. Musichead Gallery, it’s all the same to me and Reverence is the key. “ Noah has learned many lessons from his father that he will take with him. Noah identifies his biggest lessons have been, “To be a giver, not a taker… [to] have great relationships with people because you never know what those connections might bring you.” He adds that having great relationships is just as important as great musicianship. Noah echoes his father words, “Be open-minded. Make the right decisions.” It is clear he will carry this legacy forward. What’s next for the East family? You can catch Nathan on tour with Eric Clapton and also pushing forward with his solo career. He has been asked to score a few films, so we can look forward to hearing his music on the big screen in the near future. Although Noah is headed to college, he’s also contemplating recording an album of his own.
