2nd - 3rd GROSVENOR PHILATELIC AUCTIONS LTD.
(London, England)
Two specialized auctions of merit, each presented in a separate catalog:
--- The Richard Tompkins Collection, Part 1: Malaysia and Borneo
--- The Richard Tompkins Collection, Part 2: British Empire
The Tompkins collections’ scope, diversity and quality are impressive, offering many
opportunities, especially in the areas of British Africa, the British West Indies, and Malaya.
British Africa highlights include desirable items from Northern Rhodesia (incl. mint and used
examples of the KGVI 1d. ‘Tick Bird’ flaw, the former with a British Philatelic Association
[B.P.A.] Certificate), and Nyasaland, which incls several rarities.
From Sierra Leone there is an exceptional group of the 1897 Fiscal stamps overprinted
“POSTAGE AND REVENUE”; other items include the 1893 ‘HALF PENNY’ on 1d. surcharge
in a mint Block-of-4 with the SURCHARGE INVERTED, one showing the “PFNNY” variety (this
item has a Royal Philatelic Society, London, [R.P.S.L.] Certificate. Southern Rhodesia incls the
1937 1/- with a double print, one being ‘albino’, of the frame (with a R.P.S.L. Certificate).
The stamps of Transvaal overprinted in 1889 for use in Swaziland are included with inverted
and double overprints, and the ‘Swazielan’ for ‘Swazieland’ error. There are many of the
errors, such as misplaced and double surcharges, on the Swaziland decimal currency
overprints of 1961. Equally well covered are the stamps of Tanganyika, with German East
Africa overprinted for use in Mafia Island.
The collection is strong in Malaya, especially the Japanese Occupation period. Examples
include, from Negri Sembilan, a complete sheet of the 1c. black with overprint inverted (SG
J266a) with a R.P.S.L. Certificate, and the 1922-1941 Trengganu handstamp Type 1 (Chop ‘F’)
$50, as an unused horizontal pair (SG J117) with a B.P.A. Certificate.
From Kelantan there is an unused Block-of-4 of the 2¢ / 40¢ orange and blue-green Type 9
surcharge (SG J42/a) with ‘Handa Seal’ showing the error ‘Cente’ for ‘Cents’ with a B.P.A.
Certificate. For the Straits Settlements issues, the collection includes very nice copies of both
watermarks of the KGV $500 (SG 215 and 240d, with R.P.S.L. and David Brandon Certificates,
respectively).
The British West Indies is well represented with strong sections of Bahamas, (incl the 1876-
1878 1/- pale green as a horizontal Strip-of-3 imperforate between including the 1949-1950
4¢ grey perf 14-1/2x14, fine used (with R.P.S.L. certificate), and British Guiana (incl the
1850-1851 12¢ pale blue very fine used as a cut square on a small piece, with a R.P.S.L.
Certificate).

Further items of interest incl. the British Solomon Islands imperforate between pairs of the
1907 2d., 2-1/2d., and 6d. values, (all with certificates), and a very fine unmounted mint
example of the 1939-1951 2-1/2d as a vertical pair, imperforate horizontally; from the
Seychelles is the 1957 5¢/45¢ surcharge mint, with the surcharge double.
