The ´Sick Building Syndrome´ is a recognised condition that refers to instances when buildings such as homes and offices cause illnesses due to harmful toxins contained within them. There are a number of ways through which buildings can become toxic. Although most people are aware of the harmful effects of chemical toxins, what is not so well recognised are the harmful health effects of biological toxins especially those produced by moulds. Yes moulds look nasty and filthy, and their spores are generally seen as health hazards, nevertheless what makes them especially harmful are the chemicals known as mycotoxins that they release into the air. These mycotoxins are linked to many chronic health problems. Moulds are a problem in areas of the world with high humidity or where rainfall is high.
