Be Careful With These Drugs
Prescription drugs are absolutely necessary in health care, and many of them save countless lives
every day. But prescription drugs are best when used for short term. Sadly, doctors prescribe these
medications for long term use and in many cases for a lifetime. This ultimately leads to other health
problems. It is important that you find out all you can about the medications you take, and do all you can
to counteract any harmful side effects associated with the medication. Take only the medications you need.
Corticosteroids: Corticosteroids or steroids were heralded as a healing wonder when they were first
discovered and used to treat nearly all chronic diseases because of their powerful anti-inflammatory properties.
A few years later however, it became obvious that steroids also had many life threatening effects.
Common side effects of steroids include: diabetes, depressed immune system, poor wound healing, thinning
of the skin, and weight gain.
Statins: Statins are prescribed for lowering cholesterol and they produce this effect by stopping the liver
from making cholesterol. By doing so however, statins also block the production of Co-enzyme Q10, a
valuable nutrient needed by every cell in the body to generate energy. Many studies have associated statins
with many illnesses including liver and kidney damage, muscle and joint pains, memory loss, dementia,
extreme hostility and violent behaviour. High cholesterol can easily be controlled with plant extracts such
as policosanol.
Bisphosphonates: This class of pharmaceuticals are commonly prescribed to manage osteoporosis and
low bone density and include drugs such as ibandronic acid or alendronic acid. Such drugs are claimed to
be helpful because they slow down the breakdown of bone tissue. However in order to remain healthy and
strong, our bones are continually broken down and regenerated. When the ´breakdown´ phase is stopped,
the resulting bones are thick and brittle and easily prone to fractures. Bisphosphonates also cause serious
damage to the liver and kidneys. MSM (Methyl sulphonyl methane) supplement is an effective way to
maintain strong bones and prevent osteoporosis.
SSRI antidepressants: Drugs that belong to this class such as Prozac, work by preventing the reabsorption
of serotonin and by doing so, tricks the brain into believing that it has more serotonin than it actually
does. Serotonin is called the feel good hormone, and low levels are associated with depression. The problem
with SSRI is that they stop working after the body´s serotonin stores are completely exhausted, but by
then the user may have developed some form of drug dependence. SSRI´s cause severe dependence, depression,
suicidal ideation, weight gain, and a loss of emotionally feeling.
Methotrexate: Commonly used to treat severe forms of arthritis, as well as cancers of the skin, lungs and
breast. Methotrexate works by targeting fast growing cells like cancer cell. Unfortunately some of our normal
cells like the blood cells, are also fast growing and these are equally destroyed by methotrexate giving
rise to side effects such as depressed immune system, anaemia, blood clots, infections and liver diseases.
Codeine: Codeine is a highly addictive pain killer. A growing number of people are developing an addiction
to a variant of codeine which is combined with caffeine and available in small sachets. Codeine is derived
from heroine, and causes a similar type of addiction as heroine. Codeine also causes severe damage to the
liver and kidneys.
