Butternut
PAWS Chicago North Shore
Butternut is a 4-year-old
beauty who turns heads of
everyone who passes him
at the PAWS Chicago North
Shore Adoption Center.
Butternut was originally adopted as a kitten but
was recently returned due to no fault of his own.
This recent change has been hard on Butternut,
so he will need a home that will be patient as he
comes out of his shell. However his true personality
is very sweet and friendly, and his future family will
be very lucky to have him in their home.
Butternut, along with many dogs and cats, is
available for adoption at the PAWS Chicago North
Shore Adoption Center located inside the Petco
at 1616 Deerfield Road in Highland Park. To
“It’s truly magical and
whimsical.”
The same can be said
for the life story of Miriam
Hoover.
The former Marian
Fanny Ulvinen was from
a farm family of Finnish
extraction in Upper Michigan.
There were three boys
and she was the youngest
of nine girls, two of whom
died as babies. Her father
died when she was 4 years
old.
In the mid-1930s at age
20, she came to Hoover’s
mansion to work as the upstairs
maid, one of about a
dozen servants. She was
brought there by a sister
who also worked as a servant.
J. Earl, who persuaded
Marian Fanny to change
her name to Miriam, was
divorced from his first
wife, Dorothy, and shortly
after he was divorced
from his second wife, also
named Dorothy. He married
the former upstairs
The great room, which was referred to as the studio by the Hoovers at their Glencoe
estate now up for sale for $15.9 million. Photo Submitted
maid on Oct. 2, 1950
while on a business trip to
Denver.
At the time of their
marriage, he was 60 years
old and she was 38. The
loving couple traveled
the world and she immersed
herself in Episcopal
Church undertakings
and made philanthropic
contributions to dozens of
cultural organizations.
Among her beneficiaries
were the Chicago Botanical
Society, the Art Institute
of Chicago, the Lyric
Opera of Chicago and the
Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
She also was a
major contributor to LGBT
causes. Miriam is survived
by four stepsons and their
families.
Although Rue said the
longtime family home
“would be perfect for a
residential family looking
for a larger piece of land,”
the real estate broker left
open the possibility that
the property “could be developed”
to include other
residences.
