Water skills for life with the Greater Auckland
Aquatic Action Plan
Young people aged 5-18 years are a target priority group under The Auckland
Approach to Community Sport. With this group top of mind, the Greater
Auckland Aquatic Action Plan (GAAAP) is a collaborative project that
coordinates the delivery of Water Skills for Life to primary school aged children
across Auckland. It targets low decile schools (1-6) and years 3-6 students.
Managed by Aktive in partnership with CLM Community
Sport, Harbour Sport, Sport Waitakere and Sport
Auckland, 2018 has seen significant GAAAP impact
and delivery:
• 11 new schools have been introduced to the
Water Skills for Life initiative
• Since January 2018, 103,274 water skills for life
lessons have been delivered to 14,538 Auckland
children. GAAAP received additional funding from
Albert Eden Local Board to support extra lessons
for year 1 and 2 and year 7 and 8 students in that
Local Board area
• 412 teachers have been provided with professional
development workshops delivered by Swimming
New Zealand.
• 118 teachers have been supported while delivering
classroom and dryland sessions to their students.
• 459 teachers have been supported poolside.
• With support from Auckland Council, Wero White
Water Park delivered the Water Survival, Safety and
Awareness GAAAP extension programme to 969
Years 7 and 8 students from 16 schools.
Aktive and our partners are looking forward to building on
this as summer approaches, and sharing more fantastic
feedback we receive from teachers and students alike.
“GAAAP is an excellent programme
for the school, as it provides a
great opportunity for the families
who cannot afford paying for their
children. . .The school and the
children appreciate the support that
enables them to learn the essential
water skills for life that helps them
to be safe around water.” - Teacher
“I could use the water skills to help
my little sister who is six years old
- when she’s in the water and at the
beach.” - Student
VALUED SUPPORT
GAAAP is funded by Foundation North and Water Safety
New Zealand. Thank you for your support – we look
forward to providing further updates on this project.
