The Great
Eastern Europe
Adventure
What started as a mere dream has come true for me, traveling through
Europe traversing several countries in one single trip to the continent.
By: Ryan Dela Cruz
I have been passionate about seeing different cities and cultures
for as long as I can remember. As soon as I started earning money, I
already had my eyes on seeing as many countries as possible. I would
save up as early as a year before, learn what I need to know about the
country I am going to and create a budget so I’d know how much I am
going to spend in the trip.
I have been to the UK and Paris last year, but this trip was different,
my Ireland based good friend and I had our mind set on going offbeat
and seeing a rather unknown route, taking on a 12-day eastern
European tour that brings us to Prague, Czech Republic; Vienna,
Austria; Bratislava, Slovakia and then to Budapest, Hungary.
The Dream That Was Prague
We started our trip in Prague, flying through Istanbul, it was a 16-hour
travel time for me, arriving in the middle of the day, after a quick
shower, we head out right away not wasting any time.
The heart of the city is in the old town square, the place is packed
with restaurants, quaint cafes and a lot of tourists, every corner is a
photo opportunity waiting to happen.
Amongst the cathedrals and castles in this city, I was most enthralled
with the roofs of the houses here, they were all orange and when it
hits the sun the roofs of these houses are just picture prefect.
Planning
Getting more and more experienced as a
traveler, I have learned to manage my way
around visas and its requirements, the
local partners of European countries have
enough information on what you need to do
to acquire a Visa. All boils down to a which
country you are staying most at or where
you are entering first.
Itinerary building is the most exciting part
for me, with the advent of social media and
travel influencers, finding beautiful places
in any country is as easy as searching it on
google. I particularly like using pinterest
in building my itinerary and tripadvisor in
getting as much local and realtime reviews
of places I am planning to visit
Back in the day, getting a hotel was also a
not only a chore but there were very few
options, either expensive or rip offs. With
Airbnb and hostels popping all over the
world, the not only do you get affordable
options, establishments are fighting over
travelers giving more value for the value of
the traveler.
My tip to anyone travelling to Europe,
research is really important, locations
and itineraries need to be really carefully
designed especially if you are DYI-ing
(doing it yourself). But, there are certain
countries when they proximities of
landmarks and stops are too far apart, the
trusty hop-on, hop-off is always a good
option.
Travel tip in getting a perfect view of the city is entering one of
the towers at the end of Charles Bridge, for a minimal fee, you can
go up a flight of narrow stairs and end up at a view deck with a
breathtaking view of the city.
Breathtaking Vienna
After a couple of days in Prague, we move to Vienna by train arriving
in 4 hours to our cool hostel full of students and tourists from all over
the world.
Old world opulence mixed with modern sensibilities, that’s how I can
describe Vienna. While Prague was as dreamy as a fairy tale, Vienna
will show you how the royals lived back in the day with their endless
gardens, magnificent palaces and gothic style cathedrals.
All over the city, you see these buildings with gargoyles guarding
them, in here the devil was indeed in the details. As I was researching
for this trip, I knew I wanted to learn and be immersed in the past
and Vienna did not disappoint. Must see places are the Schönbrunn
palace, Stephansdom Cathedral and the Belvedere Palace.
The Schönbrunn Palace, is the top tourist
attraction in the city for good reason. This
summer baroque style palace is over 300
years old, and to say it is expansive is an
understatement.
Prague among other thing is
world famous for their beer, they
actually have the highest beer
consumption per capita in the
world, while I didn’t get to try all
of their beer, I was able to enjoy
one called Staropramen, and for
us Filipinos who love our SMBs,
this was a definite contender.
For the hippies out there who love a good
photo opportunity, check out the John
Lennon Wall. The wall is full of graffiti
dedicated to the famous artist and it the art
has been changing since 1988.
If you don’t have much time in your trip, Prague is highly
recommended as all notable landmarks are within walking distance
and transportation isn’t an issue with the tram and su`bway working
till late night.
Over the years, I have come to appreciate
architecture, especially places of worship
whether catholic or not. If you are like me,
the Stephansdom Cathedral, is a place to
see when in the city.
TRAVEL• LIFESTYLE• ENTERTAINMENT
www.villagepipol.com | 5
In the middle of all the oldworld
beauty, the Museum
Quarter lies, a massive complex
dedicated to modern art and
lifestyle. The place has a lot
courtyards for you to chill and
appreciate some of the outdoor
exhibitions. Must see for any art
buffs and Instagram addicts!
Michael’s Gate
At the very entrance of the old town,
this building has been there since
the end of the 13th century and is a
definite landmark of the city!
Travel tip: Vienna is a rather big city and landmarks are far apart
from each other, to save time we decided to purchase a hop-on,
hop-off bus here and there are plenty of options for travelers to
choose from.
Bratislava: Eerie and Endearing At
The Same Time
Having told people that I am visiting this city, I have been asked why,
it’s not a typical destination and that was the very reason we are
going!
Arriving after a quick two-hour train ride, we set off to immediately
see the surroundings, right away you are brought back in what
seems to be dark and eerie times, although the country has been
independent since 1993, all around you can see the past and how the
now is currently catching up.
Much like Prague, the center of the action is centered in the old town
or Centrum Bratislava. Cafes, Restaurants, bars and souvenir shops
set-up next to each other vying for their share of tourist money.
Having seen castles and churches for a few days now, we wanted
to switch things up and instead joined a free night walking tour
– a spooky legend tour! Definitely a must-try, if you like gore and
witchcraft! Learned that the city’s roads are laden with the dead
during a plague, a famous lady who bathed in young ladies’ blood and
witches who were burned to death!
Čumil, The Watcher. All around the historic
city, one can find different statues that add a
modern touch to the center. This one is said
to grant wishes when you touch his head. Be
sure to look for him when you visit!
Budapest: Bustling City Full of Vigor
and History
Enter Budapest, as we draw closer to Istanbul, we were welcomed
with a city that had a completely different flavor altogether. In one
corner, one can see gothic and neo-gothic architecture and on the
other you see the ottoman or Turkish structures.
Budapest is a widely popular city and has tons of attractions, best
tip is to plan out your day as destinations are far apart and there is a
significant amount of traffic in the city.
Day and night, the city was alive with tourists and locals. During
the day, we visited popular spots such as the Buda Castle, Matthias
Church and the Jewish Quarter. At night, we would try out different
restaurants that lined up the city.
After all the walking around and eating we decided to end our last
day in Budapest with a visit to the spa, the Szechenyi Thermal Bath,
which is in the middle of the city. For a few euros, we got to enjoy 17
different pools with different heat levels and treatments. Definitely a
great end to our and one I will never forget!
Chain Bridge
Just magical, this bridge among the many
other bridges that connect Buda and Pest is
such a beautiful structure that we’ve come
here at least three times.
Hungarian Parliament Building
Travel Tip: Ride any of the boats the
traverse the danube river, day and night.
Szechenyi Thermal Bath
For about Php700.00 you can enjoy a day
in this public bath composed of 17 different
pools both indoor and outdoor.
Beef Goulash
Local favorite, no doubt this is where we got
our Beef Caldereta, only difference is they
don’t serve it with rice.
M Bakery
A Bite of New York City
By Eden Morales of UncoveringEden.com
Magnolia Bakery or M Bakery, my gateway to
experiencing my favorite tv series, Sex and the
City. They are world-renowned for a scene where
Miranda Hobbes and Carrie Bradshaw were eating
cupcakes from their bakery. This tv series has been
my religion for the longest time. I watch it during
my down time or whenever I experience a writer’s
block.
SATC has always been there, giving me real-life
situations simplified into monologues where Carrie
just wonders as she types on her trusty laptop. As
a blogger who writes almost 70 percent of his life, I
can definitely relate to her.
Anyhoo, M Bakery is located at the heart of
Bonifacio Global City, in the newly-built One
Bonifacio High Street. It just had opened last
August 22 and the lines had been crazy since then.
It has definitely taken BGC by storm.
Some people wait for the new phone to come
out and some may even go in line for hours for
a newly-released shoe design, but then there’s
me, a 27-year old guy who will patiently wait for a
cupcake.
The long line can be a little tiring. Get it from me,
a person who doesn’t like unwanted chatters near
my ears, I assure you, the wait is really worth it.
I remember this guy who went almost person-to-
person to just tell us to be a little considerate when
ordering for everyone to experience their famous
Banana Pudding. That’s how you take care of
customers.
Once inside, seafoam green-colored walls will
welcome you with a little dash of whimsy. The
sections of the dessert counters are written in a
board hanged on the ceiling along with the light
fixtures. On its back, are wall shelves with various
cakes in various colors. On the opposite side, a
marble table lies quietly by the tall windows. And
adjacent to it, is a souvenir shelf filled with M
bakery’s collectibles.
The interior is so quaint and dainty, I can actually
associate it with Carrie Bradshaw’s personality.
First thing I ordered is their famous Banana
Pudding. I only bought the small one because I
honestly would love to try other desserts off their
menu. This delicious treat is so milky and creamy.
It is reminiscent of our staple dessert, graham
cake. Maybe because of the ground bread buried
below the thick whipped cream with slices of
banana mixed in it. It also tastes a little similar to a
banoffee cake but instead of cake it is more of an
ice cream. The only thing I regret about ordering
Banana Pudding
this is the size I chose. Clearly, small is not enough
for me. This sweet confection should be bought in
larger sizes.
Double Fudge Brownie is a chocolate lover’s
dream. It’s dark brown color signifies the richness
of chocolate in it. A pinch of lemon can be
tasted—or maybe I was just dreaming—in this
super decadent dessert.
This velvety Chocolate Cupcake with Chocolate
Buttercream is so tender and delicate. I decided
to scoop the icing by my index finger and tried
to retrace its swirl — too bad I couldn’t. The only
thing I do best is devouring this dessert less than
two minutes. It’s that good!
To M Bakery, I would like to thank you for letting
me experience a bite of New York City —and
Sex and the City—with treats wrapped in cute
packagings. I can already attest to the fact that I
will be a regular customer. You’ll be able to find
me here, whenever I want to have a pinch of
pure sweetness in this usually bittersweet world.
Or whenever I wanna channel my inner Carrie
Bradshaw.
Chocolate Cupcake
Double Chocolate
Fudge Brownie
But as I write this article, I wonder, “In a place so
busy like Bonifacio Global City, can desserts help
people slow down and appreciate the sweet side
of life?”
Pound For Pound Fitness
By Lara Toldanes
Getting fit is more than a vanity. Often times
than not, gym goers are connoted as conceited.
However, the importance of health and fitness
is more than what you expect. Countless
‘fitspiration’ photos are rampant on social
media sites.
Numerous individuals try to squeeze in some
time to pay a visit at a gym amidst busy
schedules. People nowadays go to gym to
strengthen their body and to burn unwanted
calories. These reasons are of course no doubt
part of their healthy lifestyle.
On the other hand, gym membership costs
a little off of the budget. Personal trainers’
charges are not inclusive of the membership.
For some people who are not comfortable
socializing, brush off the idea of going to gym
unless they know someone who also goes
body type or structure. First off the list is the
Strength Conditioning Program. This is for the
athletes who want to strengthen the condition
of their body. According to Roberto Jaina, the
manager of Pound For Pound Fitness, many
athletes choose his gym for this program.
Next is the Weight Loss Program, this one
is for the clients who aim to tone their body
and cut off unwanted body fats. The gym’s
ventilation is purposely warm to help burn the
fats through sweating. In addition to this, the
program focuses on cardio. The third program
is the Cross-training Program, this also suits
the needs of athletes but this comes with
swimming and track and field.
Lastly, the Weights Program. It is created
for those who aim to develop their muscles
resulting to a more muscular body build.
old, there are programs that will help them
achieve their desired body. For the younger
clients, they offer circuit training such as ladder
naman ako nagmadaling
sumikat, na mag-artista. Hinintay ko
“Hindi
lang talaga yung time na mag-shine
ako,” he shared.
He is radiantly inspiring and relatively fetching.
The 14-year-old star was discovered through
his video that went viral last 2016. He then
joined the longest-running TV series FPJ’s
Ang Probinsyano, and since then, his
star continuously shines among the wide
constellation of success and endurance.
“Siyempre sobrang saya ko kasi sino ba naman
ako para mapili ng isang Kuya Coco Martin
at ng Ang Probinsyano para pumasok doon.
Sobrang thankful ako sa lahat ng binigay ni
Kuya Coco from the start at happy ako na
kinuha niya ako,” he stated.
Recently, Awra was awarded as the Most
Innovated Child Star of the Year in the 3rd
Illumine Innovation Awards for Television.
Truly a remarkable experience for him, he
shared that he is very thankful to everyone who
appreciates his hard work.
“Hindi mawala yung pagka-thankful. Thankful
ako kasi lahat ng pagod ko nasuklian and
then ‘yung talent ko na ipinakita sa maraming
tao maraming naka-appreciate kaya
proudly pronounced.
Awra genuinely expresses his gratitude
towards people who supported him since the
beginning. He stressed out that he was not
really expecting all of the sudden glitz and
glam of the show business.
“Ang masasabi ko lang, salamat. Kasi hindi
ko naman din talaga akalain na magiging
star ako ng henerasyon ko ngayon, na sisikat
ako ng ganito kaya nagpapasalamat ako sa
lahat lahat kasi sobrang dami na ng blessings
na binibigay nila sa akin. Simpleng bata lang
naman talaga ako, mahilig sumayaw, mahilig
umarte kaya yung binibigay ni Lord na blessing
sobrang dami na, hindi ko na siya mabilang
kaya thankful talaga ako and bilang pagiging
star sa generation ko, masasabi ko lang na
sana na mag-patuloy lang yung pagiging star
ko para kahit sa ibang generation, ‘yung star ko
kumikinang pa din.”
Online bashing is not new to Awra and he
has his own ways of dealing with people who
try to bring him down.
galit nila sa akin, like may nagawa ba akong
akin,” he remarked
VP fashion
Mark Ranque
Dominating the Local Fashion Industry
by Badet Macaraig
Mark Ranque’s fondness of Filipino celebrities led to his dream
of pursuing a career in the local show business. When he
was just fifteen years old, he traveled to Manila to pursue his
dreams despite his parents’ disapproval. He ended up working
as a Road Manager of young celebrities, where he met fashion
stylist Odelon Simpao. Ranque was initially offered a position as
Simpao’s assistant stylist but he was doubtful. “[I was] hesitant
to accept the offer because I do not have any idea about fashion
and styling,” Ranque recalled, “but [Simpao] offered to teach me
[about it],” he added.
Ranque expressed that his experience as Simpao’s assistant over
the past few years was one of the major factors that helped him
improve in the field. He shared that Simpao’s guidance and trust
gave him the opportunity to explore and learn more about styling.
“He always left me on set and doing the job alone [widened
my] knowledge in fashion,” Ranque stated.
He worked on other styling gigs with a known local TV Network
until he eventually decided to pursue a career as a personal
stylist.
Breaking Through
When asked about his biggest break as a fashion stylist, Ranque
recalled how social media played a vital role in his career
development. “I was the assistant stylist of the [boy group]
Hashtags when I saw an article about Donny Pangilinan,” Ranque
remembered. “I stalked his social media accounts and messaged
him. I didn’t expect him to reply to my messages but I started to
become his fan,” Ranque recalled.
26 | VILLAGE PIPOL MNP @villagepipol
“[One time], I visited his ASAP taping [because I wanted
to] see him. I went to his dressing room [and saw] that
he was not dressed yet, despite the fact that the show
was about to start. I introduced myself as the stylist of
the Hashtags even though I was just an assistant. I also
informed him that I was the one who messaged him
on his Instagram account. I volunteered to [style him],
and he said yes. I ran so fast to get the clothes at home.
Luckily, I live near [the studio] so I got the clothes just
in time,” the stylist shared. “After the show, [Donny]
cannot stop thanking me,” he added.
His unconventional meeting with young superstar
Donny Pangilinan eventually changed his life, especially
after Pangilinan hired him as a personal stylist. “He
gave me the biggest break that I never ever imagined,”
Ranque gushed. “Now I style him in all his gigs. I’m
thankful that Donnie came into my life [the way he
did],” he stated.
Establishing a Name In The Industry
Although Ranque did not have a formal education on
fashion, his success in the field makes him a stylist to
look out for. “Fashion is not just about the brand, it’s
about how [a person] wears [their clothes],” he conveyed.
“Stylists need to study [their client’s] looks and
personal styles but I [try not to] buy expensive clothes; I
just mix and match,” Ranque shared.
When asked about his struggles, the Filipino stylist
shared how tough the competition is. “There are a lot
of stylists in the Philippines. [Some] already have their
own names and are already famous. One of my major
challenges now is the competition,” he expressed.
His major gig as Donny’s stylist has its difficulties too.
“[Some stylists] are offering Donny free services -
something I cannot offer. But I trust [Donny’s decisions],
we’ve been working for a couple of months already and
we treat each other like brothers,” Ranque gratefully
expressed.
Mark Ranque as a Stylist
Each event, appearance or show requires Ranque to explore
his styling options. His signature style is the High
Clean Street Style, which he uses majority of the time.
“Usually, I choose my clients’ style based on the look
they want or the theme. Since styling is a collaborative
work, I also ask inputs from them,” Ranque stated.
When asked for fashion advice, Ranque reiterated that
confidence is the key. “What you wear speaks a lot of
your personality. Always remember that fashion is not
always about wearing expensive stuff. [Regardless of
what brand you’re wearing], wear it well with confidence,”
he advised.
Crazy Rich Asians
Dazzling with attitude and heart, Hollywood's first Asian-centric
rom-com in years clinches a win for #representASIAN
By Emilson Gole Cruz
I cannot think of any Hollywood rom-com movie that
carries this much pressure. It’s the first Hollywood
movie with an almost all-Asian cast in 25 years (the
last movie was The Joy Luck Club in 1993). Although
there are a lot of side-eyes, the expectations are high
that the movie will suit the general public and not only
for Asians and Asian-American movie goers.
Well, all that pressure has turned this film into a gem.
Directed by Jon M. Chu, Crazy Rich Asians is fun,
funny, jaw-dropping and swoon-worthy. The movie is
not just eye-popping but also a feast for the ears with
tracks that showcases the diversity of cultures that the
film celebrates. (That Chinese version of Coldplay’s
Yellow is thrilling!)
Crazy Rich Asians tells a story of a Chinese-American
woman seeking everlasting love and discovering
cultural identity. Rachel Chu (Constance Wu), a
Chinese-American professor, decides to spend spring
break with her boyfriend Nick Young (Henry Golding),
who’s going home to Singapore and she finds out that
he is crazy rich. Beneath its glitz and glamour, the
movie is saturated with a modern sense of money, the
craziness and fun of family, and personal reinvention.
The two leads, Wu and Golding, are charming and
explicitly talented, and the supporting performers
around them keep the story crazier. Michelle Yeoh,
as Eleanor, is suitably regal, and indeed, a force to
be reckoned with. It wouldn’t be a proper rom-com
without the magic of #bestfriendgoals brought
by co-stars Nico Santos (another Filipino pride),
and Awkwafina (who is making a grandiose year
after her recent casting on Ocean’s 8). There are
lot of wonderful scenes in this movie: the wedding,
dumpling-making, and a key scene that unfolds over a
game of Mahjong to name few.
Scene stealing is no easy feat in a movie like this
and Kris Aquino does just that. Literally, I held my
breath for a minute when Kris came into the scene
in her yellow Michael Cinco gown. That few-minute
cameo is indeed worth the wait and seems to be the
highlight of the movie for us, Filipinos. It is short but
a showstopper. Well, it is not every day you will see
a Filipino cast in a Hollywood movie, more over it is
THE Queen of All Media who is playing the role of the
untouchable Malay Princess Intan.
Seeing this kind of on-screen representation,
loaded with Asian diversity, is incredibly satisfying.
In a deeper way, Crazy Rich Asians is truly
groundbreaking. As a number of critics have written,
just seeing an all-Asian cast in multifaceted roles is a
game changer: brings unheard voices before a huge
audience and breaking walls of racial expectations.
No surprise if this is out for a sequel. SHIOK!
Fil-Am fencer
Brennan Louie
on losses and success By Badet Macaraig
In an exclusive interview, Filipino-American fencer Brennan
Louie candidly talks about what he’s been up to, three
years after moving to the Philippines to pursue a career as
a Filipino athlete.
Leap of faith
In 2015, Louie took a huge leap and moved to the
Philippines to be a national athlete, despite the fact
that he has never lived so far from his family at such a
long period of time. When asked what inspired him to
do so, Louie shared that his journey “has always been a
homage to [his] family who made sacrifices in order to
provide for the younger generations,” referring to his
grandfather who did not pursue a basketball career and
his mother who stopped law school to focus on the needs
of their respective families. “Living out my dreams as a
professional athlete in the Philippines has always been
heavily motivated by them,” Louie added.
Inspired by his father who was a collegiate-level fencer,
Louie first started playing when he was around eight
years old and he has not stopped playing since. His love
for the sport heightened after moving to the Philippines
and joining the national team, stating that “wearing [his]
country’s flag has instilled an immense amount of pride
and cultivated a new love for the Philippines.”
Coping with challenges
Growing up in a tight-knit family, one of Louie’s biggest
challenges was living alone in Manila. “I came to the
Philippines with a dollar and a dream. It was the first time
I was on my own,” the athlete shared. However, Louie’s
teammates and Filipino friends helped him feel more at
home. “The relationships I’ve built with my teammates and
[Filipino] friends made feeling homesick very negligible,”
Louie recalled.
Louie also expressed his struggles as a person diagnosed
with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD),
sharing that he is “often labeled as crazy by Filipino
standards.” He shared that his disorder eventually helped
him. “It is something that over time, I’ve learned to deal
with and actually find empowering,” he stated. Louie
also wanted to use his influence as a national athlete in
inspiring people with mental health issues “to pursue
unorthodox and bigger life goals,” adding that “[he wants]
people to say, ‘if Brennan can become a professional
athlete with ADHD, I can achieve my dream!’”
Winning the gold
Louie made the headlines last August 2017 after bagging
the gold medal at the 29th Southeast Asian (SEA)
Games. “Winning gold at SEA Games has led to many
opportunities that would’ve otherwise been impossible,”
he gratefully recalled. The Fil-Am fencer was the first SEA
Games gold medalist in ten years, and was one of the
athletes given a presidential citation. During a ceremony
at the Malacañang Palace last September 2017, President
Rodrigo Duterte conferred said presidential citation on
Louie for his achievements during the SEA Gaames. .
More than his big win, Louie expressed that the more
important thing is his contribution in “elevating fencing
to the forefront of athletics.” Since the Philippine Fencing
Team’s success at SEA Games, the sport became more
prominent in quad-media, with them being invited to
various appearances left and right. “Just being able to
have contributed to that movement speaks volumes of
the impact of this generation of fencing. I’m heading
the movement of fencing excellence and creating a new
culture for fencing,” Louie proudly shared.
His big win at SEA Games was only the beginning; Louie
ended up partnering with a fencing organization called
Republic Fencing where he designs a high performance
program “so that younger fencers are equipped with the
knowledge and experience it takes to be a world class
fencer.”
