May 2018 Getting on the Board & New Smiles compiled by Jackie Wyant, Managing Editor Kristy Miranda Community Action Committee I was born and raised on a small farm in central Iowa. After college, I lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota where I worked as an Accountant and met my husband, Paulo. We later moved to Atlanta, Georgia with our two kids before moving to São Paulo in 2012. My favorite thing about São Paulo is: the traffic is crazy, cars and motorcycles are going every direction, and somehow it all works out. Drivers are more courteous. My favorite AmSoc memory is: the Angel Party is definitely my favorite AmSoc memory. It's the happiest day of the year! One embarrassing thing that has happened to me in São Paulo is: before I learned Portuguese, I bought what I thought were ham and cheese rolls to serve as an appetizer at dinner with friends, only to find out after serving and tasting it, that it was actually raw pasta with ham. § Stephen Prestes Penney Business Networking Committee I was born in São Paulo, Brazil, and grew up here, in the east coast of the US, and in Europe. I moved back to São Paulo, from New York City, a few years ago for new opportunities. My favorite thing about São Paulo is: the diversity of people, cultures, experiences. My favorite AmSoc memory is: the 2017 Holiday Party, and all of its positive energy. Mateus Sampaio Bookkeeping I am currently in my third year of Accounting at University of São Paulo (USP). My last job was in Santander Bank as a communication analyst, where I learned about various bank products. After this, I flew to Wisconsin as an exchange student and worked in customer service at an indoor waterpark/ resort. After realizing how cold Wisconsin can get, I came back to Brazil to continue my studies. Currently, I am responsible for mapping and broadcasting (through social media) all the projects that every USP campus has. This is part of Núcleo dos Direitos da USP, a human rights project in the university community. I want to work for AmSoc because: aside from believing in the charitable causes that AmSoc is involved with, I want more experience in and knowledge of accounting. Previously, I've only worked in communication, so this is a good chance for me to focus on my career. In my spare time, I like to: study languages (especially French), play volleyball, listen to music, and travel.
