Pint-sized Olympics coming to Malibu City’s annual Tiny Tot Olympics slated for Sept. 23 at Malibu Bluffs Park Submitted by the City of Malibu The City of Malibu Community Services Department’s annual children’s sporting event, the Tiny Tot Olympics, returns to Bluffs Park on Sunday, Sept. 23, offering an afternoon of fun, friendly outdoor sports for children. malibusurfsidenews.com sound off Malibu surfside news | September 20, 2018 | 13 Don’t Panic, It’s Organic Controlling the Asian tiger mosquito organically Andy Lopez Contributing Columnist Invisible Gardener A new mosquito has appeared in Southern California, and its name is Aedes albopictus (Asian tiger). The insect first showed up in 2001, and showed up again in 2011. Local vector control specialists thought they had eradicated it and it has returned. To make matters worse, another species of Aedes appeared: Aedes aegyptai. This species is even more difficult to control and more deadly than its cousin(s). Before these two had arrived, most mosquitoes were the Culex species. This species is not much of a bother to humans since they instead go after birds and not humans. The Aedes species, however, loves humans and has developed a completely different approach to attacking than their cousin Culex. The Asian Tiger is called that because of its appearance of black and white stripes on its legs while the Culex species is ambercolored. The stripes make them harder to see. Since the Asian tiger prefers humans, they will attack anyone with exposed legs. They attack below the knee and will attack several times. They are very aware of our presence, which makes it hard to hit them. The Asian tiger has developed a completely different way to lay their eggs compared to the Culex. The Culex need a large body of water to lay their eggs in, like a swimming pool or a small amount of standing water in something like a pot tray or saucer. The Asian Tiger, however, will lay her eggs in various places and only needs a tiny amount of water for their eggs to survive. Their eggs are attached to these places. Even if you dump out the water, their eggs will survive and hatch when the time is right for them, even years later! The most important thing to realize is that this species spreads a variety of deadly diseases. The Culex variety has spread West Nile virus with a few hundred cases in the U.S. They do not spread any other type of disease. The Asian Tiger, on the other hand, has the potential to spread dengue fever, yellow fever, Zika and Chikungunya. These are deadly viruses known to kill humans if allowed to spread. So, what can you do about this? First, it is essential to understand that if we continue to try to control this by using confidential pesticides, the mosquito will develop immunity to it and then we would be in serious trouble! I want everyone to know that there is a very simple way to kill these and all mosquitoes without using any chemicals that also will eventually harm us. It is garlic! Yes, that’s right, garlic. Garlic will not only kill these insects on contact, but you also can use it to prevent any eggs from hatching since it will even kill the eggs if it comes in contact with them. My experience with garlic goes back to my childhood in Florida. Because it is tropical and it rains regularly, one can find many insects, but especially mosquitoes. I have a love for garlic, and one year a friend asked me why she was always getting bitten and I wasn’t. Many factors cause a mosquito to bite you. Your order is one. Meat eaters get attacked more than non-meat eaters because they give off through their skin the odor of meat. Non-meat eaters do not have this problem as much, but other factors attract mosquitoes to you. But what they all have in common is the odor humans have. They also go for the carbon dioxide we breathe out. So, using garlic is indeed a straightforward solution. You can use it in several ways. First, you can spray garlic. You can either make your own garlic spray or buy garlic ready to spray. Try Mosquito Barrier. It is concentrated, so follow the instructions. If you use too much, it could make you sick. I also would not be the one spraying the garlic if you are pregnant. Usually, 1 cup in a gallon is a very strong mixture that when sprayed will kill all soft-bodied insects and their eggs. You can spray it onto the pool, and the garlic will spread out and form a thin layer, killing any eggs. You can spray it all over the yard, and it will kill eggs on contact. You have to be careful spraying it since it will kill all soft-bodied insects but will not harm bees, etc. I Always wanted to have an extra TV wherever you are or go? Another advantage of using garlic, besides the fact that insects cannot become immune to it, is that you can eat the garlic. If you eat enough, the garlic odor will come out your skin, effectively making you invisible to them! You also can lightly spray yourself with the garlic, especially if you are going out for a walk in the woods, etc. What I do is cut a garlic glove in half and place each half of a glove into my shoes. I will smell of garlic all day long. It might not be suitable for your friends unless they do it too. Eating garlic on a regular basis also will help your health.
