Hira Naveed collected
her first college victory and
the Pepperdine women’s
golf team jumped to a second-place
finish at the season-opening
Branch Law
Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational
on Sept. 11.
Thanks to a closing 4-under
68, Naveed went from a
tie for sixth place to a oneshot
win with a 7-under 209
(71-70-68). Naveed led all
players with 15 birdies over
the three rounds, two more
than anyone else.
Naveed’s previous best
was a pair of second-place
finishes at the 2016 Ron
Moore Intercollegiate and
the 2018 West Coast Conference
Championships.
The 7-under was a career
best for her at Pepperdine.
It was the first time she had
played all three rounds of a
tournament below-par.
Only one team went
under-par Tuesday at the
par-72 UNM Championship
Course, and that was
the Waves to the tune of
7-under. After starting the
round in eighth place, they
climbed all the way to second.
Pepperdine was one
of two teams to finish below
par for the event with
a 1-under 863 (295-287-
281).
Junior Momoka Kobori
tied for 10th place with a
1-under 215 (69-72-74)
and finished below-par for
the first time in her Pepperdine
career. Her final round
included two birdies.
Senior Hannah Haythorne
fired her second
straight 3-under 69, moving
her up to a tie for 13th
place with an even-par 216
(78-69-69). She had four
birdies Tuesday. The evenpar
was the best tournament
score of her Pepperdine
career and the 3-under
69s tied her career best.
Playing as an individual,
senior Patricia Wong tied
for 23rd at 219 (73-75-71).
Her 1-under 71 to close the
tournament included five
birdies.
10 Questions
with Daniel Rafeedie
Daniel Rafeedie, 16, is a
junior who plays halfback
and linebacker for Malibu
Sharks football.
Have you tried to take
on more of a leadership
role this year,
especially on defense?
Yes, I have. I’ve been
here for three years now so
I do the best I can to motivate
the team and keep the
morale up.
Your dad is on the
coaching staff. What’s
that experience like,
playing for him?
He’s been coaching me
since I have been in youth
football so it definitely feels
a lot more comfortable. We
think alike and it’s nice to
have another person out
there with a similar train of
thought as you.
What do you attribute
most to the 3-0 start
this season?
The players who don’t
start have been especially
helpful to the strong start.
They work hard in practice
on scout team to make the
starters better, which has
really contributed to the
team.
What mindset do you
need to have as a
linebacker?
My mindset is to just
play as hard and as fast as
I can, reading the offense to
key where the ball is or will
be. Once I know, I flow to
the ball and make a play.
What are you most
looking forward to this
year?
To continue playing, winning
and having fun with
my teammates, especially
the seniors. I’m going to
miss all of them when they
leave. They’ve been a big
part of Malibu High football
for the last four years.
What are your plans
after high school?
I’d like to go to college
somewhere preferably
where I could play football
and be able to study I subject
I like.
Where in the world
would you most like to
travel?
I would go to Europe.
There are a lot of places to
suzy demeter/22nd century media
visit there. It has a lot of
history and it’s naturally
beautiful there.
What is the best
advice you’ve received
recently?
“Good.” That’s the advice.
Something bad happens,
“good,” make it better,
you mess up, “good,” use
that to improve so you don’t
make the same mistake.
What would your
dream job be?
My dream job would be
to explore new civilizations
on different worlds when
we discover new life on a
different planet.
Who were your role
models growing up?
My role models have
been my parents, my
coaches and my brothers.
