doorstep. I’m so encouraged to always 

look locally, as I hope you do as well.

BRINGING HISTORY HOME 

Since launching the Milford-on-Sea Historical 

Record Society’s website 

www.milfordhistory.org.uk, we have found that 

the House Histories page has been particularly 

popular. It contains short accounts of properties 

in the village and many of them can be seen by 

the QR signs where they are displayed. The 

Village Voice has invited us to provide some 

more detailed histories of houses in Milford, 

both large and small. We shall start with a 

smaller house at No.46 High Street. 

Polly’s Pantry 

On March 1 st 1676 P. Rudsby of Winchester 

received £16 from William Thorn, blacksmith, of 

Milford for a 1000 year lease on the property 

known as Yatemans. It was described as a 

tenement or dwelling house, with the barn and 

garden plot which was bounded by John Gritt’s 

land on the west, by John Hutchins land on the 

east, by the Kings Highway on the north and by 

the river on the south. 

By 1875, Edmund Cole who now owned the 

property had died intestate and his wife, Louisa, 

was granted letters of administration. At her 

death in 1907, Letters of Administration were 

granted to her son, Frank Cole, who sold the 

residue of the lease to Edward Knight for £295. 

This effectively became a freehold property by 

virtue of ‘the Conveyance & Law of Property’ 

Act 1881. 

The property had a frontage of about 35 feet 

bounded on the west by another property 

agreed to be purchased by Edward Knight and 

on the south by the Danestream. 

It would appear that in 1912, Edward took out a 

mortgage to pay for this and another property. 

The mortgage was with the Trustees of the 

Southampton & West Hants District No. 121 of 

the Independent Order of Rechabites [Salford 

Unity] Friendly Society.* 

In 1919, Cecil Lewis Knight bought the property 

from his brother, Edward, for his grocery and 

confectionery business which is today Polly’s 

Pantry at No. 46 Milford High Street. 

When the Cole family sold the property to 

Edward in 1907, the agreement was needed 

from all the members of the family who were 

alive and were 21 or over. Edmund and Louisa 

had thirteen children and by the date of this 

sale, five of them had died and one, Louisa’s son 

George, was not available, nor was it known if 

he was still alive. In 1859 he had emigrated to 

Queensland, Australia, but he kept in contact 

with his mother, Louisa, until 6 January 1883. In 

his last letter to her, he said that he had been 

wounded in a fight with natives. As he had not 

been heard of for 22 years he was presumed to 

be dead, and it was agreed that as long as he 

had some protection, Edward could go ahead. 

The Cole family agreed to give a covenant 

indemnifying him if any claim should be made 

by George Cole or any of his heirs or successors. 

It would be interesting to see what would 

happen if somebody did turn up!

Heritage Lottery Fund and Milford-on-Sea Parish

DOGS COME TOO! 

Record numbers of British holidaymakers are 

choosing to go off on vacation with their dogs 

instead of leaving them behind. It's not just UK 

holidays either; some intrepid dog owners are 

even calling on their vets, and paying to have 

them issue special pet passports to enable their 

four-legged friends to travel abroad with them! 

an infusion of elderflower, linden blossom, 

ginseng and water or 'Pawsecco Rose'; (same 

again but with carrot added). For the more 

butch-type dogs there's good old 'Bottom 

Sniffer Beer' containing dandelion and burdock. 

And to round off the meal, Fido can choose 'old 

sock ice cream' too. Strange but true! 

In recent years, our dogs have become much 

more important members of our families and 

now there's a growing demand for dogfriendly 

self-catering cottages, hotels and even 

luxury villas that don't just tolerate dogs, but 

actively encourage them to come too. 

Here are some examples: 

Even the upper echelons of polite society are 

getting in on the 'dogs come too' act: In 

London's fancy Knightsbridge at the five-star 

Egerton House Hotel, while well-heeled guests 

tuck into their scones and finger sandwiches in 

the drawing room, their dogs can enjoy their 

own special 'Dog Afternoon Tea'. 

The four-star, 15th century Swan at Lavenham 

Hotel and Spa has a renowned restaurant, and 

has now created a special in-the-room dinner 

menu especially for its canine guests. 

In the 12th century Tuscan Castello Del Nero, 

Michelin-starred chefs fuss around 

preparing bespoke meals for dogs who come in 

hungry after a day sniffing around the 740 

acres of olive groves and vineyards and cooling 

off in a couple of lakes. 

Channels Bar and Brasserie in Essex supply an 

extensive range of luxury treats for dogs from 

their 'DoggyDining' menu. There are old 

favourites that are sure to please, like 

sausages and rashers of bacon alongside 

choices such as 'cheese and crackers', which 

are actually chunks of cheddar with chicken 

rawhide crackers served with an apple 

garnish. It doesn't end there either; a range of 

side orders like doggy crisps (crunchy 

vegetable crisps made for dogs), doggy 

popcorn (made in Britain especially for dogs 

too and 'with 100% natural ingredients') is 

available. And If some of that sounds a bit dry 

for the canine palate, then pampered pooches 

can wash it all down with 'Pawsecco White'; 

It's a growing trend, but if your holiday simply

What’s in Your Wine? 

Keeping up with trends and changes in tastes is 

one of the many enjoyable things about 

running an independent shop. We are able to 

react quickly, adding or changing lines, and 

there are several areas of our buying that has 

evolved this way. We have increased our range 

of organic and biodynamic wines, low or no 

sulphur and vegan wines. 

Which brings me to this interesting topic, what 

is in your wine? 

Wine has been produced for thousands of 

years and was previously the way of preserving 

what would go unused or rotten. People also 

drank wine with it being cleaner than drinking 

water at the time and it was seen as bringing 

many health benefits. 

Modern advances in technology and the 

demand for more affordable wine has led to 

the industrialisation of winemaking 

techniques, very much in the way that 

modern/supermarket bread has mostly 

replaced home baking. Home baking where 

just three ingredients were used, nowadays 

look on the back of your packet of bread and 

there are many more than that! 

So, what is likely 

to be in the 

average bottle of 

plonk? The list is 

long and can 

include things like 

sulphur to 

preserve the 

wine, as well as 

added tannin, 

acidifiers, sugar, 

clarifying agents, 

cultured yeasts 

and stabilisers. 

Healthy organic vineyard in the

Organic Wine - This is where the grapes are 

grown organically, without the use of harmful 

pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and chemical 

fertilisers, therefore better for you and the 

environment. 

Sulphur in Wine - This is used as a 

preservative, keeping the wine from oxidising 

and isn’t necessarily a bad thing in small 

quantities. However, some people find they 

react to it, especially at high levels and so it is 

nice to be able to offer a selection of low or no 

added sulphur wines. Sulphur levels in organic 

wines tend to be much lower. 

Vegan/Vegetarian Wine - More often than not 

fining agents are used in large scale wine 

production- wineries can use animal byproducts 

such as milk and egg white to filter 

any sediment. We offer a great selection of 

wines from smaller producers who don’t fine 

or filter their wines at all, as well as those that 

use non-animal products for this process and 

therefore are vegan and vegetarian friendly.

WILDLIFE MATTERS ……... to all of us 

‘LANDSCAPE SCALE CONSERVATION’ 

Ecologists, conservationists and our larger 

wildlife bodies are regularly talking about how 

best we can look after British wildlife. The term 

‘landscape-scale conservation’ has been coined 

and seems to be on everyone’s lips. 

Comparatively small, often isolated, nature 

reserves dotted around Britain’s coast or inland 

are no longer suitable alone for the future 

needs of our diminishing wildlife. Or, so we are 

told and with many animals rapidly declining, 

larger steps need to be taken. 

So, how real is the threat of losing species in our 

countryside and cities? On the face of what I 

see locally, not much. That is however, until you 

look at the wider picture. Species that have 

been here for hundreds of years are in decline. 

Farmland is under intense pressure to produce 

more food, often it appears, for unrealistic 

returns. 

Naturalist and broadcaster Stephen Moss says 

in his book ,‘Wild Kingdom’ about the farmed 

countryside, ‘Apart from the gently waving 

heads of corn in the summer’s breeze, there is 

an eerie silence. Nothing moves. The flutter of 

butterflies, their colours catching the eye as they 

reflect the sunshine; the buzz of bumblebees as 

they flit from flower to flower; even the 

wildflowers themselves – are all absent’. 

Stephen continues, ‘We only need to find out 

what we have lost since the end of the Second 

World War to realise just how much has 

vanished during the last 70 years – the span of a 

human lifetime – we have lost 99 per cent of our 

hay meadows, 96 per cent of our chalk and 

limestone grasslands, half a million farm ponds 

and 300,000 miles of hedgerows – enough to 

stretch from the earth to way beyond the 

moon’. 

The Wildlife Trusts have put in place a ‘Nature 

Recovery Network’, which includes trying to 

bring nature into the places where we work and 

live and to encourage farmers to make room for 

colourful wildflower strips running alongside 

hedgerows. They contend that children seem to 

understand that the natural world is the 

foundation of our wellbeing. The Trust’s 4 stage 

plan is to: 1) Protect the wildest places, 2) Make 

connections through (‘stepping-stones’ and 

‘wildlife corridors’) between these larger places, 

3) Provide a bigger overall area for wildlife and 

4) Find space for wildlife in the wider landscape. 

Wildlife Potential: 

• 250,000 miles of roadside verges for 

wildlife. 

• c.430,000 hectares of gardens to help 

important pollinators such as 

bumblebees. 

• Public open spaces of which two-thirds 

is short mown grass, whereas, 

wildflower meadows support eight 

times more wildlife . 

• 70% of UK land is farmland where 

creating habitat for wildlife is vital. 

So, what can we do to help? There is no real 

opportunity to help in this new ‘landscape scale’ 

vision, but what every one of us can do is 

manage our gardens a little better for ‘wildlife’, 

or maybe, help your local conservation 

volunteers undertake work in nearby public 

open spaces and nature reserves. 

The rewards for health and well-being and 

just doing your bit for nature, is 

immeasurable. ‘Every one of us can do a 

little, but together we can do a lot’.

DRIVING SAFELY FOR LONGER 

There are currently just over 5.1 million people 

in the UK aged 70 and over driving on our 

roads, and the expectation is that this will 

double if not treble in the next 20 years as we 

all live longer. The oldest person who holds a 

driving licence is a male aged 107 years. 

Hampshire is shown as having the highest 

number of older drivers outside London. 

We know that older motorists have a wealth of 

experience, confidence and tolerance. 

However, sight, hearing, reaction time and 

judgement of speed and distance may not be as 

sharp as it once was. 

Fragility increases with age, so injuries tend to 

be more serious and recovery takes much 

longer. Casualty rates do increase for car 

drivers aged over about 65, and the fatality rate 

increases significantly. 

That’s where we come in. The Older Drivers 

Forum is about keeping mature motorists on 

the road safely for longer. Whether that’s 

helping giving you practical and informative 

help and support to continue driving or 

pointing you in the right direction for an 

assessment to identify your driving needs – 

from wing mirror adapters to an elevated 

driving seat – we’re here to help. 

We’re a not-for-profit group made up of 

experts in road safety from across Hampshire 

and the Isle of Wight – from representatives 

from the emergency services, to charities, local 

authorities and businesses specialising in 

keeping older people on the road. 

If you know an older driver, have contact with 

them regularly in your job or are perhaps just 

concerned for a friend or relative who is still 

driving then the Older Driver Forum may be 

able to help. 

The forum is holding an Older Driver 

Awareness Week, offering advice and tips that 

will help older drivers continue to drive safely 

or help them to decide when to stop. The 

event is free to attend and open between 

9.30am to 3pm, no appointment is required 

and people can pop in anytime during these 

hours. The events are aimed at anyone with an 

interest, from older drivers themselves, to 

friends and relatives. 

Advice will be available on: 

• Brushing up your skills. 

• Booking a driving assessment. 

• Arranging a regular eyesight test. 

• Getting advice on health and wellbeing 

issues that could affect driving ability. 

• Renewing your licence at 70. 

• Learning about road safety and 

consequences of not being fit to drive. 

• Discover alternatives to being 

independent without a car. 

Safety is the top priority; it should be the most 

important thing older drivers consider when 

there is concern over driving ability. The best 

advice is don’t become complacent and wait for 

an accident or a near miss to convince a driver 

to stop, instead seek advice, support and help.

WHY WE NEED A ‘MEN’S SHED’ 

At the County Council, I am a member of the 

select committee that looks at Public Health 

and we recently received a presentation 

about ‘Men’s Sheds'. I have to say that at 

first I was rather puzzled about the general 

idea, but the more I learned about it the 

more it occurred to me that a Men’s Shed 

would be incredibly valuable in the area. 

Hence the beginning of a local project which 

I hope will be a success. So, what does a 

messy old shed full of workshop tools have 

to do with men’s health? 

The health of men, particularly that of single 

men, or those who may have lost loved ones 

and find themselves alone in later life, has 

been identified as a huge concern in 

communities all over the country. Not only 

the physical health of men but also their 

mental health. Isolation and lack of contact 

with the outside world is one of the biggest 

causes of depression, and particularly so in 

men of all ages. That is not to say that 

women do not suffer from loneliness. But 

women often find it easier to initiate going 

out for a coffee with friends or to join clubs 

such as the WI, Zumba or even Weight 

Watchers, where they can chat and have fun 

together. It has been found that many men 

find socialising much harder. 

A Men’s Shed is one way that men can find 

friendship and camaraderie amongst other 

like-minded people. Men working together 

on projects, learning new skills, sharing 

ideas and successes, helps general wellbeing 

and encourages a more active and fulfilling 

lifestyle. Sheds also offer a place to put the 

world to rights, to laugh and relax with 

other people. 

There is a national Men’s Shed Association 

(menssheds.org.uk) and there are now close 

to 40 Men’s Sheds in Hampshire alone, all 

run by the Shedders who use them. If you 

would like to become part of the ‘Men’s 

Shed brigade’ in this area, and help to get a 

new Shed started, please get in touch with 

me (contact details below). 

If, however, you are reading this before 

Thursday 20 th September, there is a public 

meeting about the project at New Milton 

Memorial Centre, Whitefield Road, on that 

evening (20 th ) at 7pm where we will have 

speakers from existing Men’s Sheds. Do

TRAVEL guide 

THAILAND: A live travel piece for this edition as 

Christina is currently in situ! This is part one of her adventure. 

Having flown into Bangkok via Dubai (splitting 

the flight into two digestible 6 and a half hour 

sections), we arrived to warm and dry 

conditions despite it being rainy season. 

Bangkok is a crazy, busy, fascinating city and a 

great place to start a visit to Thailand as long as 

you have a relaxing end planned! We visited the 

obligatory night markets and wandered around 

the streets with vendors selling everything from 

fresh fish to fake handbags. 

The following day we had an adventure 

planned. We got up early and were driven 2 

hours out of the city into the lush green 

countryside to a place called , The Flight of the 

Gibbons to do a few hours of zip lining! It was 

less terrifying than I had anticipated, and really 

very beautiful being above the treetops and 

zipping down 30 individual wires. The day was 

finished off with a trip around an open zoo 

where the animals were in (sometimes 

worrying) touching distance. 

The next day we were picked up at the crack of 

dawn to go to the floating market, which is an 

amazing 

experience. 

We travelled 

along the river 

on a long tail 

boat and then 

got dropped 

off and left to 

our own 

devices for a 

few hours. We 

chose to see 

the markets by 

boat and so 

paid 100 baht for a lady to row us through the 

canal network. We could stop at whichever 

boat we wanted to buy from. They have a full 

array of fruits and vegetables for sale, as well as 

beautifully fresh food being cooked on the river 

boats. You can also buy souvenirs and clothes 

here. It was a lovely morning and got us back 

into Bangkok in time to visit the Grand Palace 

and Wat Pho, both of which are serene and 

quiet oasis in the middle of the bustling city. 

After a few busy hot days in Bangkok we were 

ready for the relaxing part of our trip, and made 

our way to the airport for our flight to Koh 

Samui. It was a seamless journey and within 3 

hours of leaving our hotel in the city ,we were

here. The plan is an island tour to see the 

waterfalls and rock formations, but then also to 

take a boat to Koh Phanang to do some 

snorkelling in the crystal-clear waters. 

I am heading back to Thailand in October to see 

Elephant Hills and visit Phuket, so my next 

travel piece will be an insight into another side 

of Thailand. 

The best time to visit is usually December to 

May but the weather is glorious here in Koh 

Samui at the moment. Prices are at their lowest 

during our summer. There are many direct and 

indirect flight options with various airlines, so 

we are spoilt for choice. The time change is 7 

hours and the local currency is the Thai Baht.

New Forest Hospital Radio celebrates its 

40 th anniversary of this year. Broadcasting 

24 hours a day from the studio in the

bedside of patients as well as public area

to hear; musical memories are a 

wonderful therapy. During the day a wide 

variety of music and local interest 

programmes are broadcast, designed to 

appeal to our listeners. As well as a music 

mix, there are programmes dedicated to 

Classical Music, Jazz, Sixties, short plays 

from the Lymington Players and of course 

there are no advertisements.

WHEN IS CHEAP TOO CHEAP? 

It quite often happens that in the space of a 

short while, the same issue rears its head 

from a number of sources. In this case it was 

whether buying a cheap computer because 

of anticipated light usage is a good idea. As 

so often in the tech arena, the first answer is 

a resounding, ‘it depends’. However, when it 

comes to cheap computers, there is a 

baseline under which it is simply not wise to 

go. 

There are laptop computers currently being 

sold with 20-30Gb SSD hard drives. Now I 

can’t remember when I last used a computer 

with a hard drive that size, but I suspect it 

may have been around the turn of the 

century, and it seemed a very large hard 

drive at the time. 

It gets worse. Windows 10 regularly updates 

to add new features or fix security holes that 

have been discovered. To do that, it 

downloads the updates to your computer 

before it installs the new files. If you don’t 

have enough space to fit the update files 

onto your computer hard drive, the update 

will fail, and short of having someone put a 

larger hard drive in the computer, there’s 

little you can do. 

I would suggest that 128Gb is the smallest 

hard drive you should contemplate, coupled 

with 8Gb main memory if possible. It may be 

way more than you need, but experience 

tells me that’s really the best place to start if 

you want to keep using the computer for any 

length of time. 

Today a large hard drive is measured in 

Terabytes. Just putting that in perspective, 

you would need around fifty-one 20Gb hard 

drives to store one terabyte of data. 20Gb is 

a very small hard drive by today’s standards. 

‘Ah’, you may say, ‘I only do a bit of Internet 

searching and emails, I don’t need a very high 

specification computer’. That’s true, if you 

don’t make a habit of storing digital photos 

or video, you don’t need a very large hard 

drive. 

When I tell you that according to Microsoft 

themselves, 64-bit Windows 10 requires 

20Gb of free space on its own, that’s all or 

most of your hard drive gone right there. The 

trouble then comes that if you want to use 

an alternative browser such as Chrome, or 

use Microsoft Office, or any other program, 

there’s no space left.

Mervyn Couzens 

October/November 2018 

Land Management Award 

The Parish Council would like to pay tribute 

to River Warden Mervyn Couzens, who 

recently passed away. Mervyn was a 

stalwart of village life and tirelessly 

contributed many year of service to the 

upkeep of the Pleasure Grounds and 

Danestream in particular. Recently he 

played a key role in investigating and 

resolving effluent discharge into the 

Danestream: An active member of the 

Milford Conservation Volunteers he was 

also involved with wildlife and 

conservation measures in many other 

areas of the parish. He will be greatly 

missed by everyone who knew him. 

The Parish Council and Milford 

Conservation Volunteers (MCV) were 

jointly presented with an award for Land 

Management by the CLA and National 

Park Authority. The award was presented 

by Lord Gardiner of Kimble to Tony Locke 

from the MCV on behalf of both parties. 

Plastic-free Milford-on-Sea 

The Parish Council has recently agreed to 

achieve plastic –free community status. 

The national scheme is organised by 

Surfers Against Sewage and currently has 

over 200 towns and villages on the list, 

which have all 

worked to reduce the 

amount of single-use 

plastic in their 

communities. For 

those who take part in the regular beach 

cleans you will appreciate the vast amount 

of plastic that washes up on our beach and 

the detrimental effect this has on wildlife 

and our food chain.

Parish Council comment on MOS1 – land 

north of School Lane 

Milford-on-Sea Parish Council strongly 

opposes the release of Green Belt for the 

development of 110 homes on Strategic 

site 7. Building on the Green Belt should 

be considered only in exceptional 

circumstances and always in response to 

local need. NFDC planning officers are 

reported as stating that Green Belt 

development is inappropriate. Milford’s 

local need is not for more private sector 

homes but for family affordable 

accommodation, which would likely form 

a small part of this proposed development 

if this land was removed from the Green 

Belt. 

The Parish Council has grave concerns that 

should this land be released, developers 

would not comply with the stated 

requirements for affordable homes to be 

built. There is strong evidence to support 

this as recent press coverage on the 

release of Green Belt has highlighted. This 

is proved by Milford’s recent experience at 

the school lane site (MoS1), where a 

recent planning application took little or 

no regard for the conditions already set 

down by central government as well as 

the inspectorate and unbelievably was 

supported by NFDC Planning officers. 

How can residents and the Parish Council 

have any faith in the new Local Plan 

bearing in mind these events? 

The existing area is on a road leading to 

the school, which is walked by residents of 

all ages. The proposed development 

would therefore adversely impact on a 

great many residents and should not be 

removed from the current Green Belt 

village boundary. 

Soundness: The Local plan is not sound 

for the following reasons: 

The overall assessment of need is 

exaggerated. Two very different 

assessments have been presented by 

NFDC both contain conjecture as to 

demand. 

The assessment of need in Milford-on-Sea 

is also exaggerated. There is no economic 

or social housing need that must be 

accommodated by building on the Green 

Belt as there are significant vacant sites 

within the village envelope that stand 

ready for development. There is an 

additional Green Belt exception site in the 

existing Plan for 30 units of varying types 

which has not been developed. 

If these existing sites were developed the 

real need for affordable housing in the 

village would benefit local residents and 

not those migrating into the village who 

often seek to buy second homes, would be 

met. 

Other sources of additional housing 

include the steady intensification of land 

use within the village and the recent 

conversion of a holiday park to permanent 

accommodation. 

Infrastructure: Milford-on-Sea’s 

infrastructure is already under 

considerable strain, including: 

The Road System: this suffers from a T 

junction bottleneck leaving the village and 

added congestion at the school adjacent 

to the proposed site rendering Manor 

Road, The Lymington Road and other 

surrounding roads crowded and 

dangerous at all times, not just during 

school terms. 


The proposed development would also add 

additional pollution to the area where the 

Junior School is situated. Because the 

proposed site is some distance from the 

village centre this would add to the flow of 

traffic into an already busy the village 

centre with increasingly little parking 

available. 

Public services: the school is already oversubscribed 

and the medical services are 

also at full stretch serving a particularly 

high proportion of older residents. 

Effect on wildlife population: the proposed 

site hosts diverse and thriving wild life 

including Roaming Deer, Badgers, Foxes, 

Buzzards, Nesting Birds, Voles and Owls 

and thus the proposed development would 

have an extreme detrimental effect on the 

village’s wild life population. 

The sewage system: this frequently causes 

sewerage to flow into people’s homes; 

despite considerable expenditure by the 

water authorities. The current system is 

not fit for purpose. Any addition to the 

current system would be short sighted and 

possibly dangerous to property and life. 

The Consultation Process 

NFDC have arranged two consultation 

processes – both include the holiday 

months of July and August. The suggested 

format for responses is, for the responders, 

in an unfriendly format that is 

cumbersome, repetitive and timeconsuming. 

This has inevitably has a chilling effect on 

the willingness and patience of responders.

Newcomers’ Supper 

This year’s annual Newcomers’ Supper is 

being held on Saturday 13th October at All 

Saints’ Church Hall. If you have moved into 

the village in the past year, this is a 

wonderful opportunity to find out about 

the groups, clubs and societies that are 

available in the village (over 60 at the last 

count!) and to meet some of your new 

neighbours. If you would like to come

SID to arrive in village 

The Parish Council recently agreed to 

purchase a SID (Speed Indicator Device) 

which will highlight to drivers their speed.

installation of the 

device is governed by 

strict rules from the

Department of Transport and the 

Highways Authority (Hampshire Cunty 

Council), but the Parish Council is 

investigating options for the device to log 

all the speed of traffic in order to develop 

a record of areas, that can then be flagged 

up to the Highway Authority for attention. 

It is hoped the device will be in place in the 

coming months. In addition, the County 

Council have agreed to replace the flashing 

lights near the school with larger more 

impactful ones and it is hoped these will 

be in situ over the winter. We will keep 

you informed of progress in future 

editions. 

Sea Road toilet refurbishment brought 

forward 

will see the amount of work that they are 

doing on behalf of the Parish Council on 

Old Milford Meadow. You may recall the 

land was bequeathed to the Parish by the 

late Mrs Diana Gillespie, whose wish it was 

that the meadow be preserved for the 

whole community. Having lain relatively 

untouched for several years, the brambles 

have made a huge impact and it is this vital 

clearance work that the MCV volunteers 

have kindly agreed to help with. 

The planned improvements to the Sea 

Road toilets by New Forest District Council 

have been brought forward to this 

financial year. The plan is for the toilet 

block to use the same footprint as the 

current building but would house four 

unisex cubicles, two family cubicles and 

one Changing Places disabled unit, 

featuring a hoist and changing bed. The 

toilets would be a similar design to other 

block in the district (the nearest being at 

Keyhaven) and the contract is currently 

out to tender, with worked hoped to start 

in the New year and be completed by 

Easter. A section of the car park will be 

cordoned off during the construction 

period but as this is a “quiet” time of year, 

it is hoped this will not have too 

detrimental an impact. We will keep you 

informed of progress.

Gardening Tips 

• Rake up fallen leaves regularly. If they have appeared diseased during the summer, do not 

compost them. 

• Sow sweet peas in pots in a cold frame. Remove the covers when the seedlings appear. 

• A newly sown lawn can have the grass height reduced by about a half when it is 2-3 inches 

high. Repeat cutting the lawn in 3-4 weeks’ time. 

• Apples and pears which are ripe should be picked and handled carefully prior to storage a in 

a cool, airy position. 

• Plant daffodils in the garden. Good dwarf varieties include ‘Tete a Tete’, ‘February Gold’, 

‘Jack Snipe’ and ‘Hawera’. 

• A number of shrubs such as Buddleja, Forsythia and Philadelphus can be propagated by 

taking hardwood cuttings. 

• In the vegetable garden, dig over ground as it becomes vacant. 

• Remove dead leaves from ornamental pools and thin oxygenating plants. 

• Plant out new roses. You can improve the soil with plenty of humus and by adding some 

blood, fish and bone fertilizer to the planting hole. 

• If you are buying biennials such as wallflowers and sweet Williams, make sure that they are 

bushy, as they will not grow much now before flowering. 

• Harvest leeks and cauliflowers. Also lift and store root crops such as carrots, turnips and 

swedes. 

• Ventilate the greenhouse on sunny days. Give the glass a good wash to let in the maximum 

amount of light. 

• Tomato crops should be cleared from the greenhouse and not left to stand suffering from 

Botrytis (Grey Mould) as the fungus spores will flourish in greenhouse conditions. 

• Feed the birds regularly. It is important to ensure that they have a constant supply of water.

Christingle has been helping to 

change the lives of children for 

almost half a century. Now in its 50th 

year, Christingle, a celebratory event 

named after the Christingles that are 

lit during the service, continues to 

bring hope and raise vital funds to 

help transform the lives of vulnerable 

children and young people. By taking 

part in Christingle at: 

All Saints’ Church, Milford on Sea on 

Sunday 9 December, 5pm 

you can change the lives of even 

more children in need of help as well 

as enjoy the warmth of a vibrant 

celebration created specifically with 

children in mind. Right now, more 

than 118,000 children and young 

people are facing issues of hardship, 

abuse and neglect which are ruining 

their childhoods and futures. The 

Children’s Society make it their 

mission to bring hope to children and 

young people during life’s most 

desperate moments, helping them to 

build a better future. The funds raised 

at Christingle celebrations across the 

country are vital in helping them to 

continue working to tackle issues 

such as poverty and neglect, sexual 

exploitation, substance misuse and 

mental health. 

By providing direct support The 

Children's’ Society has been able to 

help thousands of children and young 

people move on from the effects of 

suffering harm and abuse, to taking 

positive steps in their lives. As well as 

providing one-to-one support 

services, their research, policy and 

campaigns work focuses on lobbying 

government and influencing decision 

makers to ensure that all children are 

kept safe from harm and provided 

with the support they need to build 

their futures. 


SAMARITAN’S PURSE – OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD – SHOEBOX 

APPEAL 

We will be holding workshops again in All Saints’ Church Hall on Wednesdays 

October 17 th , 31 st and November 14 th from 2. to 3.30pm. At the workshops we 

fill shoeboxes with gifts to send out to needy children around the world. We 

need donations of the following items: 

Face cloths, bars of soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste, hairbrushes, hair bobbles, stationery 

items including pencil cases and sharpeners, colouring books for younger children and writing 

pads for older children. We do like to include a cuddly toy for every child, and other toys such as 

a skipping rope, tennis ball, a yo-yo and anything else which is small and will fit into la box. 

Please DO NOT include any war related items, such as toy guns or military figures, any liquids or 

lotions hand-made knitted stuffed toys or sharp items, chocolate or food. Leaflets giving details 

of what we need will be available from All Saints’ Church, the Church Office, the Newsagents in 

the village and the Community Centre. 

If you have never been before, please come along with an empty shoebox, some Christmas 

wrapping paper and items to be included. Be creative but everything has to fit into a shoebox. 

If you like knitting, we give each child a beanie hat and sometimes mittens. There are patterns 

available on the website (samaritans-purse.org.uk/cc). We do also need a contribution of £5 per 

box for transportation costs. 

If you would prefer to make up your own box, please bring it to the church office on or before 

November 14 th .Last year 373 boxes were sent to Latvia. I would like to be able to send that 

many boxes this year. At the time of writing I do not know to which country they will be sent, but

If you live near or walk through All Saints’ 

Churchyard, you cannot have helped noticing 

activity in the nearby overgrown meadow 

behind the yew hedge.

part of the land to the Milford community. The 

Parish Council is the new owner of this part, 

whilst the larger northern part, off Knowland 

Drive/Dacres Walk, is now in the hands of 

Christchurch Priory.

In early September, both MCV and the New 

Forest Area Conservation Volunteers, 

commenced the restoration of the meadow, 

community orchard and garden. The first job 

was to clear the gateway to allow a tractor flail 

machine to get 

in to clear dense 

stands of 

bramble 

throughout the 

site and to take 

its first proper 

hay cut for 

many years.

and surrounding the existing Hinoki Cypress, 

Medlar, Hawthorn, Weeping White Mulberry, 

Roses and Fruit trees was all cleared away, 

leaving work that can now be undertaken by
