About the Cover Design 

As part of the Graphic Design course this year, the students were given an assignment 

to create the cover art for the CER brochure. A variety of designs ranging 

from photos taken by the students to original artwork was completed and graded. 

The top five projects were chosen and given to the CER department to choose 

the cover art. Alex Okerman a student at Fairmont Junior/Senior High School submitted 

an original design and was chosen for the CER Fall/Winter Catalog.

morning workshop children will create their very own version of “Peter Pan.” No

You Can Fly – Introduction to Flight 

This seminar will be facilitated by Jerry Brooks, current aviation 

teacher at Fairmont High School. Mr. Brooks started studying 

flying in November of 2013 and took and passed his 

check-ride in 2015 at the age of 51 

Ever dream of flying? This will be an introductory 3-session seminar that will conclude 

with a tour of the Fairmont Municipal Airport and a flight over the lakes of 

Fairmont. Topics that will be covered: 

Day #1 – What is general aviation and what does it take to become a member of the 

general aviation community 

Day #2 – The basics of general aviation flight under visual flight rules (VFR) 

Day #3 – Tour of KFRM (Fairmont Municipal Airport) and flight over the lakes. 

You are invited to learn how you could make this dream a reality. This seminar is 

for ages 13 & up. Class limit is 6 students/seminar. Fee: $99

Intermediate Woodworking 

This class is designed for people some woodworking skills. You will review shop 

safety as well as how to read blueprints, create and apply a pattern, learn and practice 

machinery skills and develop detail and finishing skills. Participants will make a 

storage chest while learning these skills. Fee: $49 plus $25 materials fee. Instructor: 

Brad Johnson.

stages of life the chance to try their hand at what may become a hobby, a cottage business, 

or a new career with classes that teach not only the ‘hard’ skills associated with 

the curriculum, but also the ‘soft’ skills needed to be successful in that trade.

and Learn Real-World Trade Skills 

Welding for the Hobbyist 

Clay Emler has lived in Fairmont all of his life working in Manufacturing 

for over 22 years. Over those years holding different positions 

as a metal fabricator, machinist and welder to name a few. I 

coached high school football for Granada and Fairmont for 9 years. 

I like spending my free time with family, making projects, fishing 

and playing cards. I really like to see people succeed and I want to watch my community 

grow. 

Always wanted to learn to weld? Here’s your chance! This introductory level class 

will get you started with the most popular type of welding for the hobbyist – MIG 

welding. Also known as wire feed welding, this process is commonly used in general 

hobby and repair welding applications. In this 4 session class you will learn 

welding safety, shop tool safety, wire types and sizes, proper equipment set-up and 

the right way to perform a weld bead. This is a make and take class with all participants 

building a project piece to take home. You will also be able to bring in our 

own materials to create a project. You will have access to a full shop of tools to help 

design and make your projects. For safety, please wear leather boots, long sleeve 

(darker color) 100% cotton shirt and long pants or jeans without holes in them. 

Class limited: 15, so register now and join the fun! Fee: $91 plus $25 materials fee.

with Alice Barnes 

Upholstery - Do it yourself and learn the basics of upholstery: types of fabrics, 

measuring, cutting, frame repair, spring tying, re-padding, and total recovering of 

your project. Bring your project to the 1 st session. Please wear suitable clothes for 

working. Project should be a small occasional chair. This class is for new and former 

students. Fabrics and supplies will be available at class. 

Caned Chair Restoration - Do you have a chair with broken caning in the back 

or seat? You can learn to replace it with either natural Pre-Woven cane or Natural 

Ratan strand by strand weaving of the cane depending on how the item is constructed 

and the original cane was installed. Bring your item to be caned to the first class 

so we can determine the size and type of cane needed. All supplies will be ordered 

then. You will need to pay for supplies used at the end of the class. 

The class will meet for 6 Sessions. Fee: $78. The average caned seat can take 21+ 

hours to complete. Please specify type of project when registering. Space is limited 

to 6 participants.

Dental Network 

The Martin County Early Childhood Dental Network (MCECDN) is a collaborative 

project of the Early Childhood Initiative sponsored through Southern Minnesota 

Initiative Foundation. MCECDN is designed to increase awareness and education 

to all children and their caregivers about the importance of oral health, and to promote 

accessing dental care, specifically to the 0-5 population. 

Did you know that childhood tooth decay is the most chronic, yet preventable, 

infectious disease in children? 50 percent of tooth decay in low income children 

goes untreated. MCECDN partners are working to make a difference to the 

children in this area through education and improving access to early dental care. 

MCECDN partners include local dentists, public health, community education 

programs, ECFE, school nurses, preschools, Head Starts, family services, 

health care and other interested partners & individuals. Materials, tooth care products, 

presentations and displays are available. For more information on how you

Cold weather makes humans turn up the heat and pull on a sweater. Wild animals 

have to make different choices in the winter. Some head south to escape the cold, 

others stay in the ice and snow, and some even just die! Discover the survival strategies 

of Minnesota animals in winter with activities and games!

It’s a snow day!!!! We play in it, shovel it, celebrate it, and hate it. But what really 

is going on with snow? Can there be two identical flakes? Examine the microscopic 

details of a snowflake and delve into the extreme powers of ice. Create your own 

snow storm and enjoy a snow day.

It is hard to get more extreme than the depths of space! Venture into the deep unknowns 

of space, explore the extreme climates of other planets, and see how far we 

can go. We might even encounter alien life!

How do people and animals survive the harsh climates around the globe? Architects 

are working to create home and neighborhoods that can withstand the extreme 

weather events that are becoming more common around the globe. Can you construct 

a shelter to survive arctic temperatures or extreme desert heat?!

Tornados, earthquakes, hurricanes, and volcanoes, all extreme forces of nature. All 

cause terrific destruction and chaos. How do they happen and how do you survive? 

Swirl up a tornado and make an earthquake move mountains. 

Family Event – Snowshoe at Cedar Park 

Winter is an awesome time to explore the outdoors and see who our wild 

neighbors are! With the help of a Prairie Ecology Bus Center naturalist, you’ll 

learn about which animals stay busy in Minnesota all winter long and how to 

find them! We’ll learn how to track animals using our senses and go on a 

snowshoe trek to see who is living nearby. Don’t miss your chance to try 

walking on snowshoes and test your animal tracking skills! Dress for the 

weather and be prepared for fun! FREE but registration is appreciated to 

ensure adequate snowshoe supply and refreshments. Sponsored by Martin

For youth in grades 3-6. 

Just mention the worlds “Home Alone,” 

and children think of the excitement 

depicted in the movies of the same 

name. The reality of being home alone 

can evoke fear and anxiety in many 

children. Whether left alone for an hour 

after school or several hours a day during 

the summer, children should feel 

comfortable being alone. This workshop 

for children will address several 

topics relating to being “Home Alone” 

including personal safety tips, tricky 

people, basic first aid, fire safety, handling 

and unexpected, internet safety, 

un safety, dealing with loneliness and 

boredom, storm safety, dealing with 

siblings as well as trust and honesty. 

Students attend this class independently.

Five different Safe Routes to School (SRTS) will be offered to the public and parochial 

elementary schools in Fairmont this Fall. Current Crosswalk Guards and adult 

volunteers will walk with the children to their respective schools. Bikers are also 

welcome to join. SRTS will operate on Tuesday mornings beginning September 

11. Can you give a half-hour one morning a week to promote safe walking for 

our youth? Adult volunteers are needed to walk with youth on 5 different routes.

the following locations: Salvation Army, Grace Lutheran Church, Intersection of 

Day and Orient Street, Aquatic Park and Bird Park. Parents may drop their kids off

Lend Me A Tenor

Lend Me a Tenor is set in September 1934. Saunders, the general manager of the 

Cleveland Grand Opera Company, is primed to welcome world-famous Tito Morelli, 

known as Il Stupendo, the greatest tenor of his generation, to appear for one night 

only as Otello. The star arrives late and, through a hilarious series of mishaps, is given 

a double dose of tranquilizers and passes out. His pulse is so low that Saunders 

and his assistant, Max, believe he’s dead. In a frantic attempt to salvage the evening, 

Saunders persuades Max to get into Morelli’s Otello costume and fool the audience 

into thinking he’s Il Stupendo. Max succeeds admirably, but Morelli comes to and 

gets into his other costume, ready to perform. Now two Otellos are running around 

in costume and two women are running around in lingerie, each thinking she is with 

Il Stupendo. A sensation on Broadway and in London’s West End, this madcap,

Intermediate to Advanced Pitchers developing movement pitches 

(note: this is not a beginners clinic) (Limited to first 25 registered) 

Coach Pauly will focus on safe techniques required for throwing elite level movement 

pitches like the rise-ball, curve-ball, drop-ball and change-up. You will learn 

the best drills for developing the spin axis & spin rates that create elite movement & 

the four key fundamentals of basic pitching mechanics that enable you to perform 

elite level pitches. He will teach the drills to perfect pitching mechanics that will 

increase your speed & improve location accuracy & demo how to throw a basic 

drop-ball and change-up. Fee: $125 (Pre-registration & payment required through 

Fairmont CER) Deadline to register is December 14. $25 discount for advanced 

pitchers doing both Saturday clinics.

For youth ages 3-5 years old 

(with parent/grandparent) 

Tiny Tots Sports Camp prepares children ages 3-5 for organized sports in a fun, 

non-threatening environment. Parents will interact with their child as they learn 

aspects of hand & eye coordination, balance, throwing, catching, locomotor skills, 

juggling, rhythms, muscle memory, kicking, jumping, and basic movement skills. 

This camp offers a variety of sports including Soccer, T-ball, Basketball, Volleyball, 

Softball, and Rhythms. Children will have the opportunity to play with others, 

making friendships along the way. Instructor: Deb Heinrich. 4 sessions. Fee:

These programs are instructed by Fairmont Hockey coaches and players. 

If your child has never skated or has skated few times, we recommend signing up 

for Learn to Skate. Once they are on the ice, they show confidence and are comfortable, 

we can switch them to Learn to Play Hockey if the parent prefers.

Ages 10 & up Join this 20 hour open water scuba diving class. You will meet for 

approximately 10 hours of pool time and 10 hours in the classroom. Text and materials 

are included in the course tuition. We can provide the use of equipment. 

Successful completion of this course allows student to enroll in open water certification. 

This course is eligible for college credit. Open water certification is an 

additional charge and may be arranged at later date. The instructor schedules two 

-day dive opportunities (four divers total) throughout the summer. For more details

REGISTER ON TIME TO SAVE MONEY 

Persons interested in enrolling in a Community Education class may register 

by these four easy methods. Most programs have limited enrollment 

and are filled on a first-paid, first served basis. Payment Policy: Payment 

must accompany registration to ensure enrollment in a class. Registrations 

without payment will be put on hold until payment is received. Registrations/payments 

received the date the class begins will be charged an 

additional $5 processing fee. All walk-ins and late registrations will be 

charged the $5 processing fee. Participants are strongly encouraged to 

register early. These changes are made in an effort to provide quality 

service through an enrollment process more efficient and fair to all participants. 

If you have questions regarding this change, please feel free to 

contact the Community Education office at (507) 235-3141. Each class 

has a minimum required enrollment. If this minimum is not met one week 

prior to a class starting, the class will be canceled and enrollment fees returned. 

CONFIRMATION 

No News is Good News! Once your fee is paid, you are officially registered. 

Plan to attend the first session as scheduled. You will be notified 

only if the class is cancelled. 

FOR EMERGENCY CANCELLATIONS 

When bad weather or other emergencies cause cancellation of the regular 

day school program, community education activities during the day or immediately 

after school are also cancelled. Evening activities may be held if 

there is significant improvement in the emergency situation. When an 

emergency develops during the day, we will attempt to broadcast evening 

cancellation notices over Lakes 106.5 FM/ KSUM 1370AM radio or on our 

Facebook page.

for students in the Fairmont Area School District. Please contact your
